We explore the problem of finding the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points that recur to shrinking targets on a self-affine fractal. To be exact, we study the dimension of a certain related symbolic recurrence set. In many cases, this set is equivalent to the recurring set on the fractal.

We are concerned with the following Kirchhoff-type equation

We use a spectral sequence developed by Graeme Segal in order to understand the twisted G-equivariant K-theory for proper and discrete actions. We show that the second page of this spectral sequence is isomorphic to a version of Bredon cohomology with local coefficients in twisted representations. We furthermore explain some phenomena concerning the third differential of the spectral sequence, and recover known results when the twisting comes from finite order elements in discrete torsion.

We are concerned with the existence of positive weak solutions, as well as the existence of bound states (i.e. solutions in W1, p (ℝN)), for quasilinear scalar field equations of the form

We define fractal interpolation on unbounded domains for a certain class of topological spaces and construct local fractal functions. In addition, we derive some properties of these local fractal functions, consider their tensor products, and give conditions for local fractal functions on unbounded domains to be elements of Bochner–Lebesgue spaces.

We rewrite in modern language a classical construction by W. E. Edge showing a pencil of sextic nodal curves admitting A5 as its group of automorphism. Next, we discuss some other aspects of this pencil, such as the associated fibration and its connection to the singularities of the moduli of six-dimensional abelian varieties.

We consider abstract Sobolev spaces of Bessel-type associated with an operator. In this work, we pursue the study of algebra properties of such functional spaces through the corresponding semigroup. As a follow-up to our previous work, we show that by making use of the property of a ‘carré du champ’ identity, this algebra property holds in a wider range than previously shown.

We prove two results on the tube algebras of rigid C*-tensor categories. The first is that the tube algebra of the representation category of a compact quantum group G is a full corner of the Drinfeld double of G. As an application, we obtain some information on the structure of the tube algebras of the Temperley–Lieb categories 𝒯ℒ(d) for d > 2. The second result is that the tube algebras of weakly Morita equivalent C*-tensor categories are strongly Morita equivalent. The corresponding linking algebra is described as the tube algebra of the 2-category defining the Morita context.

In this paper, some weighted vector-valued inequalities with multiple weights $A_{\vec P}$ (ℝmn)are established for a class of multilinear singular integral operators. The weighted estimates for the multi(sub)linear maximal operators which control the multilinear singular integral operators are also considered.

In the following note, we focus on the problem of existence of continuous solutions vanishing at infinity to the equation div v = f for f ∈ Ln(ℝn) and satisfying an estimate of the type ||v||∞ ⩽ C||f||n for any f ∈ Ln(ℝn), where C > 0 is related to the constant appearing in the Sobolev–Gagliardo–Nirenberg inequality for functions with bounded variation (BV functions).

Let L be a one-to-one operator of type ω in L2(ℝn), with ω∈[0, π/2), which has a bounded holomorphic functional calculus and satisfies the Davies–Gaffney estimates. Let p(·): ℝn→(0, 1] be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition. In this article, the authors introduce the variable Hardy space $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ associated with L. By means of variable tent spaces, the authors establish the molecular characterization of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$. Then the authors show that the dual space of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ is the bounded mean oscillation (BMO)-type space ${\rm BM}{\rm O}_{p(\cdot ),{\kern 1pt} L^ * }({\open R}^n)$, where L* denotes the adjoint operator of L. In particular, when L is the second-order divergence form elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients, the authors obtain the non-tangential maximal function characterization of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ and show that the fractional integral L−α for α∈(0, (1/2)] is bounded from $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ to $H_L^{q(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ with (1/p(·))−(1/q(·))=2α/n, and the Riesz transform ∇ L−1/2 is bounded from $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ to the variable Hardy space Hp(·)(ℝn).

Let X be a complex Banach space and denote by ${\cal L}(X)$ the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on X. We prove that if φ: ${\cal L}(X) \to {\cal L}(X)$ is a linear surjective map such that for each $T \in {\cal L}(X)$ and x ∈ X the local spectrum of φ(T) at x and the local spectrum of T at x are either both empty or have at least one common value, then φ(T) = T for all $T \in {\cal L}(X)$. If we suppose that φ always preserves the modulus of at least one element from the local spectrum, then there exists a unimodular complex constant c such that φ(T) = cT for all $T \in {\cal L}(X)$.

In this paper we define B-Fredholm elements in a Banach algebra A modulo an ideal J of A. When a trace function is given on the ideal J, it generates an index for B-Fredholm elements. In the case of a B-Fredholm operator T acting on a Banach space, we prove that its usual index ind(T) is equal to the trace of the commutator [T, T0], where T0 is a Drazin inverse of T modulo the ideal of finite rank operators, extending Fedosov's trace formula for Fredholm operators (see Böttcher and Silbermann [Analysis of Toeplitz operators, 2nd edn (Springer, 2006)]. In the case of a primitive Banach algebra, we prove a punctured neighbourhood theorem for the index.

We prove that every endomorphism of an infinite-dimensional vector space over a field splits into the sum of four idempotents and into the sum of four square-zero endomorphisms, a result that is optimal in general.

We prove model completeness for the expansion of the real field by the Weierstrass ℘ function as a function of the variable z and the parameter (or period) τ. We need to existentially define the partial derivatives of the ℘ function with respect to the variable z and the parameter τ. To obtain this result, it is necessary to include in the structure function symbols for the unrestricted exponential function and restricted sine function, the Weierstrass ζ function and the quasi-modular form E2 (we conjecture that these functions are not existentially definable from the functions ℘ alone or even if we use the exponential and restricted sine functions). We prove some auxiliary model-completeness results with the same functions composed with appropriate change of variables. In the conclusion, we make some remarks about the non-effectiveness of our proof and the difficulties to be overcome to obtain an effective model-completeness result, and how to extend these results to appropriate expansion of the real field by automorphic forms.

The century-old extremal problem, solved by Carathéodory and Fejér, concerns a non-negative trigonometric polynomial $T(t) = a_0 + \sum\nolimits_{k = 1}^n {a_k} \cos (2\pi kt) + b_k\sin (2\pi kt){\ge}0$, normalized by a0=1, where the quantity to be maximized is the coefficient a1 of cos (2π t). Carathéodory and Fejér found that for any given degree n, the maximum is 2 cos(π/n+2). In the complex exponential form, the coefficient sequence (ck) ⊂ ℂ will be supported in [−n, n] and normalized by c0=1. Reformulating, non-negativity of T translates to positive definiteness of the sequence (ck), and the extremal problem becomes a maximization problem for the value at 1 of a normalized positive definite function c: ℤ → ℂ, supported in [−n, n]. Boas and Kac, Arestov, Berdysheva and Berens, Kolountzakis and Révész and, recently, Krenedits and Révész investigated the problem in increasing generality, reaching analogous results for all locally compact abelian groups. We prove an extension to all the known results in not necessarily commutative locally compact groups.

We discuss the cobordism type of spin manifolds with non-negative sectional curvature. We show that in each dimension 4k ⩾ 12, there are infinitely many cobordism types of simply connected and non-negatively curved spin manifolds. Moreover, we raise and analyse a question about possible cobordism obstructions to non-negative curvature.

An A1−A∞ estimate, improving on a previous result for [b, TΩ] with $\Omega \in L^{infty}({\open S}^{n - 1})$ and b∈BMO is obtained. A new result in terms of the A∞ constant and the one supremum Aq−A∞exp constant is also proved, providing a counterpart for commutators of the result obtained by Li. Both of the preceding results rely upon a sparse domination result in terms of bilinear forms, which is established using techniques from Lerner.
