New quenched-in face-centred cubic fluorite-type materials were synthesised in the Bi2O3–Yb2O3–PbO system. After annealing in air at 500 °C for up to 200 h, each material underwent a conductivity-lowering structural transformation, thus making them unsuitable for use as solid electrolytes in solid-oxide fuel cells. For example, (BiO1.5)0.80(YbO1.5)0.17(PbO)0.03 underwent a fluorite- to Bi17Yb7O36-type orthorhombic transformation, indicative of long-range cation ordering, and (BiO1.5)0.80(YbO1.5)0.11(PbO)0.09 underwent a fluorite- to β-Bi2O3-type tetragonal transformation, indicative of long-range 〈001〉 oxide-ion vacancy ordering.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for tectoridin, C22H22O11, are reported [a = 13.577 (2) Å, b = 10.466 (8) Å, c = 9.454 (7) Å, α = 85.709 (4)°, β = 94.855 (3)°, γ = 101.485 (3)°, unit-cell volume V = 1309.50 Å3, Z = 2, ρ = 1.179 × 103 kg m−3, and space group P1]. No detectable impurity was observed.

Ag3O was synthesized by jet-milling magnetron-sputtered Ag–Ag2O thin films. Heating the jet-milled powders in air and N2 from 40 to 148 °C at ambient pressure produced Ag3O-rich powders. The phase composition and unit-cell parameters of the jet-milled powders were measured as a function of temperature with in situ X-ray powder diffraction experiments from −186 to 293 °C. Ag3O was also produced by ball milling and sonicating jet-milled films at ambient conditions. The phase composition, unit-cell parameters, and thermal-reaction rates indicate nonstoichiometric Ag3O was produced from the reaction of metastable, nonstoichiometric Ag2O (cuprite structure) and ccp Ag. The thermal expansion of Ag3O is anisotropic; below 25 °C, the a-axis expansion is about twice the c-axis expansion resulting in a negative slope of c/a(T). The reversal of the sign of c/a(T) near 25 °C is dramatic. The thermal reaction is arrested when the temperature is rapidly increased from ambient to 130 °C. Ag3O is metastable and decreases its unit-cell volume during kinetic decomposition to Ag when heated above ambient temperature in air and nitrogen. The relative volume expansion of Ag3O is about 80% less than Ag at room temperature and below. The suite of nonstoichiometric Ag3O produced by heating displays a linear relation between c/a and unit-cell volume at room temperature. The c/a and unit-cell volume of a hydrothermally grown Ag3O single crystal reported in a published structure determination was the Ag-rich, low-volume end member of the linear series. The c/a and unit-cell volume are sensitive indicators of the oxygen content and state of disorder.

Pb0.88 Ln 0.08TiO3 ferroelectric system, where Ln = La, Sm, Eu, and Dy, has been characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction experiments. Softening of the lowest transverse optical phonon mode E (1TO) was evaluated as a function of the rare earths’ ionic radius suggesting partial occupation of lanthanide ions at the A and B sites of the perovskite structure. Using Rietveld refinements, it has been established a higher incorporation of Ln3+ ions into the A sites of the perovskite structure than that of the B sites for the studied ceramics. The occupation at B sites increases slightly with the decreases of the ionic radii of the lanthanides.

The new ternary compound of Al2Cu3Gd was prepared by melting with stoichiometric composition in an electric arc furnace. The X-ray powder diffraction data of Al2Cu3Gd have been collected by the Rigaku Smart Lab X-ray powder diffractometer. The Rietveld refinement method had been used to study the crystal structure of Al2Cu3Gd. The results showed that the Al2Cu3Gd, new compound have the hexagonal structure, space group P6/mmm (No. 191) with a = 5.1822 (1) Å, c = 4.1566 (1) Å, V = 96.67 Å3, Z = 1, and the density is 6.62 g cm−3, and the intensity ratio reference intensity ratio is 1.29.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for calcium(II)–naproxen complex, C28H26CaO6·2H2O, are reported [a = 36.918(2) Å, b = 5.655(6) Å, c = 12.505(6) Å, β = 91.263(2)°, cell volume V = 2610.47 Å3, Z = 4, and space group C2]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the C2 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

Powder diffraction from protein powders using in-house diffractometers is an effective tool for identification and monitoring of protein crystal forms and artifacts. As an alternative to conventional powder diffractometers a single crystal diffractometer equipped with an X-ray micro-source can be used to collect powder patterns from 1 µl samples. Using a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) camera it is possible to collect data within minutes. A streamlined program has been developed for the calculation of powder patterns from pdb-coordinates, and includes correction for bulk-solvent. A number of such calculated powder patterns from insulin and lysozyme have been included in the powder diffraction database and successfully used for search-match identification. However, the fit could be much improved if peak asymmetry and multiple bulk-solvent corrections were included. When including a large number of protein data sets in the database some problems can be foreseen due to the large number of overlapping peaks in the low-angle region, and small differences in unit cell parameters between pdb-data and powder data. It is suggested that protein entries are supplied with more searchable keywords as protein name, protein type, molecular weight, source organism etc. in order to limit possible hits.

1-N-(4-pyridylmethyl)amino naphtalene was synthesized by means of a reaction of alpha-naphthylamine, 4-pyridylcarboxyaldehyde, in anhydrous ethanol to obtainN-(4-pyridylen)-alpha-naphthylamine and that was reduced with NaBH4 to produce the wanted compound. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for the new compound 1-N-(4-pyrydylmethyl)amino naphtalene was obtained. This compound crystallizes in a monoclinic system with refined unit cell parameters a=10.375(5) Å, b=17.665(6) Å, c=5.566(2) Å, β=100.11(3), and V=1004.3(5) Å3, with space group P2/m (No. 10).

Ca3−xSrxCo4O9 with different compositions (x=0, 0.15, 0.3, and 0.45) were synthesized from stoichiometric mixtures of Co3O4, CaCO3, and SrCO3, and their unit-cell parameters were determined. The powders were mixed with silicon standard powder, and XRD patterns were collected and analyzed using TOPAS. The compounds were determined to be monoclinic with space group of P2. Unit-cell parameters changed from a=4.8329(3) Å, b=4.5727(1) Å, c=10.8360(4) Å, and β=98.093(7)° when x=0, to a=4.8432(1) Å, b=4.6100(3) Å, c=10.8668(3) Å, and β=98.110(5)° when x=0.3. An unidentified second phase was observed when x=0.45.

The crystal structure of tamsulosin hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Tamsulosin hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 7.62988(2), b = 9.27652(2), c = 31.84996(12) Å, β = 93.2221(2)°, V = 2250.734(7) Å3, and Z = 4. In the crystal structure, two arene rings are connected by a carbon chain oriented roughly parallel to the c-axis. The crystal structure is characterized by two slabs of tamsulosin hydrochloride molecules perpendicular to the c-axis. As expected, each of the hydrogens on the protonated nitrogen atoms makes a strong hydrogen bond to one of the chloride anions. The result is to link the cations and anions into columns along the b-axis. One hydrogen atom of each sulfonamide group also makes a hydrogen bond to a chloride anion. The other hydrogen atom of each sulfonamide group forms bifurcated hydrogen bonds to two ether oxygen atoms. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-065-1415.

Two carbonates Cs2Sr2(CO3)3 and Rb2Sr2(CO3)3 were synthesized by solid-state reaction at high temperatures, and their crystal structures were determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Because of the presence of heavy atoms and heavy peak overlapping, proper restrains on light-atom groups were found essential to obtain satisfactory results. The title compounds are isostructural to an early reported compound Cs2Ba2(CO3)3 and crystallize in cubic space group I213, with unit-cell dimensions a=10.072 64(2) Å for the cesium phase and a=9.855 56(7) Å for the rubidium phase. Unlike most carbonates, the title compounds feature in mutually perpendicular CO3 atomic groups. Our results also indicate that the global instability index is a more sensitive parameter in evaluating the structure rationality over the agreement factors. Moreover, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis measurements reveal that Cs2Sr2(CO3)3 and Rb2Sr2(CO3)3 are stable in air up to 796 and 880 °C, respectively.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for a novel platinum-based anticancer complex cis-[dibromo(1R,2R)-1, 2-diaminocyclohexane-κN, κN′]platinum(II), cis-Pt(C6H14N2)Br2, are presented [a = 11.862(4) Å, b = 7.222(3) Å, c = 13.353(2) Å, β = 97.813(7)°, cell volume V = 1133,36 Å3, Z = 4, space group P21]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The crystal structure of edoxaban tosylate monohydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Edoxaban tosylate monohydrate crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 7.55097(2), b = 7.09010(2), c = 32.80420(21) Å, β = 96.6720(3)°, V = 1744.348(6) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structure consists of alternating layers of edoxaban cations and tosylate anions along the c-axis. The water molecules lie near the sulfonate end of the tosylate anions. The solid-state conformation of the edoxaban cation is determined by intermolecular interactions. The protonated nitrogen atom forms a strong N–H⋯O hydrogen bond to one of the tosylate oxygens. Only one of the water molecule hydrogens acts as a donor in an O–H⋯O hydrogen bond. The tosylate oxygens act as acceptors in a number of C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

The structure of [Al2(pydc)2(μ2-OH)2(H2O)2]n(pydc = 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate) was successfully determined from powder X-ray diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic system (space group P -1) with a = 6.7813(1) Å, b = 7.4944(1) Å, c = 8.5013(1) Å, α = 95.256(1)°, β = 102.478(1)°, γ = 108.979(1)°. The structure consists of aluminum ions coordinating N and O in distorted octahedra, sharing an edge through two hydroxide ions. These dinuclear complexes are connected by pydc ions, which at one end coordinate by nitrogen and oxygen and only by oxygen at the other end. The pydc orientation is reversed in the neighboring pydc, forming double stranded chains interconnected by the aluminum dinuclear complexes in a ladder-like arrangement along [001].

The crystal structure of eltrombopag olamine Form I has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Eltrombopag olamine crystallizes in the space group P21/n (#14) with a = 17.65884(13), b = 7.55980(2), c = 22.02908(16) Å, β = 105.8749(4)°, V = 2828.665(11) Å3, and Z = 4. The crystal structure is dominated by columns of hydrogen-bonded cations and anions along the short b-axis. van der Waals interactions bind the columns together. Two H atoms of each ammonium group in the ethanolammonium cations participate in strong hydrogen bonds, and the third H forms weaker bifurcated H-bonds. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

CdTe nanorods and various branched nanostructures with different crystal structures were have successfully prepared via the catalyst-assisted vacuum thermal evaporation (CVTE) technique using various experimental parameters. SEM and XRD studies were carried out on the as-prepared CdTe nanostructures. The results show that the morphologies and crystal structures of the products were strongly influenced by the growth conditions and the mole ratios of Bi and CdTe. In the high mole ratio (0.08:1) of Bi and CdTe, CdTe branched nanostructures of CdTe were obtained, while nanorods of CdTe were formed at a lower mole ratio of 0.05:1. The crystal structure of products is either Zinc blende or a two-phase mixture of zinc blende and wurtzite. The content of the wurtzite phase were found to increase with increasing growth temperature. Our results also reveal that high growth temperature tends to form the wurtzite phase, and stacking faults may exist in materials grown in higher temperatures. These nanostructures grow following the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism.

The crystal structure of bisoprolol fumarate Form I has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Bisoprolol fumarate Form I crystallizes in space group P-1 (#2) with a = 8.165 70(5) Å, b = 8.516 39(12) Å, c = 16.751 79(18) Å, α = 89.142(1)°, β = 78.155(1)°, γ = 81.763(1)°, V = 1128.265(10) Å3, and Z = 2. The neutral side chain of the bisoprolol cation is probably disordered. The cation and anion are linked by N–H⋯O and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The cations are also linked by N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The result is alternating layers of hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers parallel to the ab-plane. The density of the structure is relatively low at 1.130 g cm−3, but there are no obvious voids in the structure. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-066-1625.

Single crystals of Sm0.55Sr0.45Mn0.4Fe0.6O3 were grown by an optical floating zone technique in an oxygen atmosphere. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern for the grown crystal revealed single-crystalline nature. The lattice parameters and atomic structure were refined and indexed using a General Structure Analysis System (GSAS) to an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a = 5.4415 (32) Å, b = 7.6994 (27) Å, c = 5.43868 (28) Å, and space group Pnma.
