The crystal structure of the purpureo salt, [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2, first reported in 1963 and later revised in 1968 (in both cases from single-crystal diffraction) in the space group Pnma (No. 62), has been recently re-examined from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction using direct methods and the software EXPO2013. The comparison of the Rietveld analysis results using the two published models and the atomic coordinates obtained from powders leads to an improved crystal structure description in the lower symmetry space group Pn21a (No. 33). As a result, the overall atom connectivity and crystal packing remain similar; however, the symmetry and internal geometry of the coordination complex are changed. The distortions from an idealized geometry in Pnma (No. 62) are likely because of energetically favorable hydrogen-bonding motifs in the crystal. The three models are compared, and their validity and limitations are discussed.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for a new memantine analogue of a Platinum (Pt) (II) complex labelled LA-13, C12H24Cl2N2Pt, are reported [a = 8.324(1) Å, b = 27.838(2) Å, c = 7.113(1), β = 111.25(1), unit-cell volume V = 1536.26 Å3, Z = 4, and space group P21/n]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21/n space group. No detectable impurity was observed.

Seven isotopic molybdates MIIUMo4O16 have been synthesized by solid state reaction with MII = Mg, Mn, Cd, Ca, Hg, Sr, Pb. Single crystals of CaUMo4O16 were obtained. Previously reported as triclinic, this compound is monoclinic, space group P2/n. Unit-cell parameters for the seven compounds are:

MgUMo4O16: a = 11.393(2), b = 6.505(1), c = 7.918(2) Å, β = 89.81(3)°, V = 586.8(5) Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.12 Mg m−3;

MnUMo4O16: a = 11.413(2), b = 6.555(1), c = 8.023(1) Å, β = 89.86(2)°, V = 600.2(4)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.18 Mg m−3;

CdUMo4O16: a = 11.427(2), b = 6.607(1), c = 8.144(2) Å3, β = 90.40(2)°, V = 614.8(5)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.37 Mg m−3;

CaUMo4O16: a = 11.443(3), b = 6.653(2), c = 8.239(2)Å, β = 90.51(3)°, V = 627.2(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dm = 4.83(5), Dx = 4.88 Mg m−3;

HgUMo4O16: a = 11.439(3), b = 6.643(1), c = 8.257(2)Å, β = 90.53(3)°, V = 627.4(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.73 Mg m−3;

SrUMo4O16: 11.465(3), b = 6.768(2), c = 8.492(2) Å, β = 90.86(3)°, V = 658.8(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 4.88 Mg m−3;

PbUMo4O16: a = 11.470(4), b = 6.813(2), c = 8.557(2)Å, β = 90.88(4)°, V = 668.7(8)Å3, Dx = 5.41 Mg m−3;

Powder diffraction data for each phase are reported.

Calculated patterns for the BaR2PdO5 series, in which X is Pd and R=Nd, Sm, Eu, or Gd, have been prepared for materials characterization until experimental patterns can be determined. These compounds are isostructural to the superconductor related “brown phases” BaLa2CuO5 and BaNd2CuO5, which are tetragonal with space group P4/mbm, Z=4. The cell parameters of the Eu and Gd compounds were derived from the La and Nd analogs. The calculated patterns of these four compounds compared well to an experimental pattern of BaNd2CuO5.

The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for a sample of the high-temperature superconducting phase Tl0.5Pb0.5Sr2CaCu2O6.5+δ has been determined. The sample was prepared by a molten salt technique and had a Tc of 96 K.

A commercially available photoconductor material, p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde diphenylamine hydrazone, C23H25N3, has been purified and recrystallized from an absolute alcohol solution. The triclinic compound has been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Experimental 2θ values corrected for systematic errors, relative peak intensities, values of d, and the Miller indices of 74 observed reflections with 2θ up to 30.5° are reported. The powder diffraction data have been evaluated, and figures of merit are reported. Unit-cell parameters least-squares refined from the 74 observed reflections of the triclinic compound are in good agreement with those obtained from the single-crystal structure analysis.

Powder X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the solid solution range of the Bi14SrxCa12−xO33 series in the Bi–Sr–Ca–O system. Solid solution forms over the range 1≤x≤7 in Bi14SrxCa12−xO33. Experimental X-ray reference patterns of selected members with x=1, 3, 5, and 7 have been prepared for the powder diffraction file (PDF). These phases are monoclinic, C2/m, with cell parameter a ranging from 21.473(4) to 21.868(4) Å, b from 4.3564(9) to 4.3898(9) Å, c from 12.753(2) to 12.962(2) Å, β from 102.91(2)° to 102.79(1)°, and V from 1162.9(3) to 1213.5(3) Å3, respectively. These parameters increase monotonically as Ca is continuously replaced by the larger Sr.

The compound DyNiSn has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction. The X-ray diffraction patterns for this compound at room temperature are reported. DyNiSn is orthorhombic with lattice parameters a=7.1018(1) Å, b=7.6599(2) Å, c=4.4461(2) Å, space group Pna21 and 4 formula units of DyNiSn in unit cell. The Smith and Snyder Figure-of-Merit F30 for this powder pattern is 26.7(0.0178,63).

Wolfeite (Fe0.59Mn0.40Mg0.01)2PO4(OH) from the Hagendorf-Sud pegmatite, Bavaria, Federal Republic of Germany, yields unit-cell parameters of: a = 12.319(1), b = 13.280(2), c = 9.840(1) Å and β = 108° 24(1). Dmeas. = 3.82(2); Dcalc. = 3.88. An indexed powder diffraction pattern is given.

Indexed powder diffraction data for Lu(OH)3 are reported. The compound is cubic, Im3(No. 204), with a = 8.2221(3)Å, V = 555.84Å3, Z = 8, Dm = 5.36(4)Mg m−3 (Dx = 5.40Mg m−3). The refined cell parameter was determined by employing a Siemens Debye-Scherrer camera (Cu radiation, Ni filter). The indexed data were evaluated according to the quantitative figures of merit FN and M20 (F29 = 20(0.028,51) and M20 = 43.5). A thermal gravimetric analysis is presented. The JCPD S Diffraction File No. for Lu(OH)3 is 38–1500.

The quantitative analysis of carbonate rich materials is tested with conventional and Rietveld methods. In the case of artificial mixtures of aragonite, calcite, Mg-calcite and quartz the Rietveld method provides reliable results with a maximum deviation of ±5 wt %. In the natural samples, however, the conventional methods give more reliable results in comparison to chemical and sedimentological measurements. This is caused by the peak overlap of calcite/Mg-calcite, peak roadening of the Mg-calcite, and the difficulties in the refinement of minor amounts of feldspar phases.

Powder X-ray and optical data have been recorded for a sample of exceptionally rare earth-poor eudialyte (Na12(Ca, REE)6(Fe2+,Mn,Mg)3Zr3(Zr,Nb)x[Si9O27−y(OH)y]2[Si3O9]2(C1,F)z, with x = 0. 1–0.9, y = 1–3 and z = 0.7–1.4) from a pegmatitic vein associated with the peralkaline Windy Fork granite in the north–central Alaska range. The eudialyte is uniaxial positive with ω= 1.6062(2), ε= 1.6138 (3) and microprobe analyses indicate that the sum of REE + Yis less than 0.1 weight percent. Refined unit cell dimensions are: a = 14.2572(4), c = 30.1338(27), Dx= 2.67, F30= 128 (0.006, 42), M20= 76. An indexed powder diffraction pattern is given.

Local layer structures and their formation process in a half-V-shaped switching ferroelectric liquid crystal (HV-FLC) were investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction. The HV-FLC is a FLC that has a cholesteric–chiral smectic C (Ch–SmC*) phase transition sequences. X-ray microdiffraction measurements revealed that the SmC* phase in the HV-FLC was composed of asymmetric chevron and inclined-bookshelf structures. In addition, temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the transient layer structures appeared during the Ch to SmC* phase transition.

We present a review of the application of diffraction stress∕strain analysis to small volumes. For cases in which the material properties and∕or the stress state are not homogeneous, traditional approaches may yield erroneous stress results. On the other hand, with proper care, relevant mechanical information about the system can be obtained. Through the use of conventional and synchrotron-based X-ray methods, we can determine the amount of strain transfer between thin film features that possess heterogeneous stress distributions and the underlying substrate. Two examples of such studies are presented. The resulting data are used to assess the validity of several models often used to predict the mechanical behavior in thin film∕substrate composites.

Single crystals of Cs3A[B2(SCN)7] with A = Sr, Ba and B = Ag, Cu have been synthesized from aqueous solutions by the evaporation method. The complex thiocyanates are isostructural and crystallize in the tetragonal system with space group .

Complete crystal data and optical data for the four compounds are reported. An X-ray powder diffraction pattern for Cs3Sr[Cu2(SCN)7] is given.
