The new minerals klaprothite (IMA2015-087), Na6(UO2)(SO4)4(H2O)4, péligotite (IMA2015-088), Na6(UO2)(SO4)4(H2O)4 and ottohahnite (IMA2015-098),Na6(UO2)2(SO4)5(H2O)7·1.5H2O, were found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where they occur together as secondary phases. All three minerals occur as yellowish-green to greenish-yellow crystals, are brittle with irregular fracture, have Mohs hardness of ∼2½ and exhibit bright bluish-green fluorescence, and all are easily soluble in room temperature H2O. Only klaprothite exhibits cleavage; perfect on {100} and {001}. Quantitative energydispersive spectroscopy analyses yielded the empirical formulas Na6.01(U1.03O2)(S0.993O4)4(H2O)4, Na5.82(U1.02O2)(S1.003O4)4(H2O)4 and Na5.88(U0.99O2)2(S1.008O4)5(H2O)8.5 for klaprothite, péligotite and ottohahnite, respectively. Their Raman spectra exhibit similar features. Klaprothite is monoclinic, P21/c, a = 9.8271(4), b = 9.7452(3), c = 20.8725(15) Å, β = 98.743(7)°, V = 1975.66(17)Å3 and Z = 4. Péligotite is triclinic, P1̄, a = 9.81511(18), b = 9.9575(2), c = 10.6289(8) Å, α = 88.680(6)°, β = 73.990(5)°, γ = 89.205(6)°, V = 998.22(8) Å3 and Z =2. Ottohahnite is triclinic, P1̄, a = 9.97562(19), b = 11.6741(2), c = 14.2903(10) Å, α = 113.518(8)°, β = 104.282(7)°, γ = 91.400(6)°, V = 1464.59(14) Å3 and Z = 2. The structures of klaprothite(R1 = 2.22%) and péligotite (R1 = 2.28%) both contain [(UO2)(SO4)4]6– clusters in which one SO4 group has a bidentate linkage with the UO7 polyhedron; Na–O polyhedra linkclusters into thick heteropolyhedral layers and link layers into frameworks; the structures differ in the configuration of Na–O polyhedra that link the layers. The structure of ottohahnite (R1 = 2.65%) contains [(UO2)4(SO4)10]12–clusters in which each UO7 polyhedron has a bidentate linkage with one SO4 group; Na–O polyhedra link clusters into a thin heteropolyhedral slice and also link the slices into a framework. The minerals are named for Martin Heinrich Klaproth (1743–1817), Eugène-MelchiorPéligot (1811–1890) and Otto Hahn (1879–1968).

The crystal structure of allanite from granitic pegmatite, the Daibosatsu Pass, Yamanashi, Japan, has been refined under the constraint of chemical composition determined by electron microprobe analysis of rare earth elements. Back-scattered-electron images and X-ray element maps of the allanites show that each of their crystal grains has chemically homogeneous distribution of major elements. A typical formula for the chemistry is: (Ca0.920☐0.080)Σ1.000(La0.238Ce0.443Pr0.048Nd0.100Sm0.019Th0.042Mn0.008☐0.102)Σ1.000(Al0.607Fe0.3173+Ti0.076)Σ1.000(Al1.000)(Fe0.5432+Fe0.3653+Mn0.055Mg0.037)Σ1.000(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH).

The crystal structure of allanite, monoclinic, a 8.905 (1), b 5.7606 (5), c 10.123 (1) Å, β 114.78°(1), space group P21/m, Z = 2, has been refined to an unweighted R factor of 3.46% for 1459 observed reflections. Although the H atom position was not determined on the Difference-Fourier map, inspection of the bond valence sums demonstrates that the H atom is uniquely located at the O10 atom and involved in a hydrogen bond to O4. A systematic examination as to crystal chemistry of allanites suggests that the isolated SiO4 tetrahedron has the largest distortion of three kinds of the tetrahedron containing Si2O7 groups in the allanite structure. This observation is common to the epidote group minerals, while the larger distortion of A2 sites caused by occupancy by REE in allanites contrasts with the smaller one of A sites in other epidote group minerals. In the allanite groups the bond angles between the O10–H bond and hydrogen bond H···O4 are found to range from 170 to 180°.

Compilation of the chemical compositions of the title allanite and the others from granitic rocks, Japan, which reveals Th-incorporation as the coupled substitution of 3Th4+ + ☐ (vacancy) ⇌ 4REE3+, provides an explanation for the observation that higher Th concentrations characterize allanites from the island arcs. The ternary Al2O3-Fe2O3-ΣREE diagram illustrates that allanites are grouped, according to their origins, into three classes suggestive of tectonic backgrounds for the crystallization localities; (1) intracontinental, (2) island arc and (3) continental margin.

The profile of the supergene zone of the Zapadno-Ozernoe massive sulphide Cu-Zn deposit differs from the classic model (Emmons, 1917) in that it includes a prominent dark sooty subzone rich in secondary sulphides. This subzone is situated above residual pyrite sands, which overlie the massive sulphide body and below quartz-baryte leached sands. It contains a diverse mineral assemblage which consists of secondary sulphides such as galena, sphalerite, metacinnabar, Se-bearing pyrite—dhzarkenite series, tiemannite, native Au, native S and native Se, and unidentified sulphosalts of Ag and Hg. The very light S isotope composition of the secondary sulphides (lowest values δ34S = —17.2‰ (VCDt) in comparison with primary pyrite ∼0‰ and baryte +18.4‰ is indicative of bacterial sulphate reduction. The overlying oxidized part of the supergene column contains minerals of the jarosite-beudantite- segnitite series. The maximum concentrations of Au, up to 150 ppm, occur in the lower part of the profile. The atypical structure, mineral assemblage and S isotope composition of the secondary sulphides in the dark layer of the supergene profile are indicative of particular geochemical conditions due to the existence of a stagnant water body that gave rise to intense bacterial activity, in turn controlled by fluctuations in the redox boundary.

New analyses of a garnet-clinopyroxene rock (‘eclogite’) and its constituent minerals from the Sittampundi complex of India are presented. The rock has a composition comparable with an alkali-poor tholeiite and this composition, as well as the garnet (Py 51·5 %; Alm 32·7 %) and pyroxene (Jd 7·4 %; Ts 10·8 %) are very similar to those from South Harris.

The apparent distribution coefficient (K′Fe/Mg) for the garnet-clinopyroxene pair suggests a temperature of equilibration near 850 °C. Projection of the experimental data of Green and Ringwood (1967) down to this temperature suggests a pressure of about 7–8 kb. This is well below the pressure of the granulite-eclogite transition.

The new mineral tooeleite occurs with pyrite, arsenopyrite, scorodite, and jarosite at the U.S. Mine, Tooele Country, Utah. Analysis by electron microprobe gave Fe2O3 43.56%, As2O5 38.61%, SO3 7.24%, and H2O by the Penfield method 9.80%. For this analysis, the suggested formula is Fe8-2x3+[(AS1-xSx)O4]6(OH)6.5H20; x is about 0.2.

Crystals are orthorhombic, perhaps Pbcm or Pbc21, with a = 6.416, b 19.45, c = 8.941 Å. The strongest diffraction lines are [d in Å, (hkl), (I)] 9.75 (020) (10); 3.208 (200,132) (9); 3.047 (061,220) (5); 4.476 ({002) (4) and 2.680 (240,113) (4). The mineral is optically negative with a small 2V; α = 1.94, β = 2.05, γ = 2.06. Hardness = 3, Dmeas = 4.23, Dcalc = 4.15 g/cm3 for Z = 2.

Microwave dielectric heating methods for the preparation of a number of arsenate, phosphate, vanadate, molybdate and carbonate minerals and their deuterated analogues are reported; rapid and efficient syntheses of these have been achieved. The application of this to the study of vibrational spectroscopy of minerals is discussed, with particular reference to scorodite.

Talc was identified as an equilibrium associate of omphacite, kyanite, zoisite, and garnet in some coesitebearing eclogites and as a retrograde phase in associated garnet peridotite from the Bixiling mafic-ultramafic complex in the Dabie ultrahigh-P metamorphic terrane, central China. Observed talc- and tremolite-bearing assemblages within the coexisting mafic and ultramafic rocks together with established phase relations for the simple system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O constrain the P-T path for retrograde metamorphism. This, together with reported talc occurrences from the Dora Maira massif, leads to the conclusion that UHP talc assemblages are confined to mafic and pelitic rocks of unusual chemistry, and are not stable at ultrahigh pressures in ultramafic rocks. Thus, talc cannot be an important H2O-bearing phase in deep mantle ultramafic rocks.

The first-principles plane-wave pseudopotential method is used to study the electronic and chemical structures of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). The results indicate that an antibonding interaction occurs between Fe and As atoms in arsenopyrite. This interaction results in the Fe atom being repelled towards the S atom to stabilize antibonding orbitals, causing a larger S–Fe–S angle in arsenopyrite than in pyrite and a distortion in the arsenopyrite structure. In arsenopyrite, Fe–Fe distances are alternately long and short. The low spin density of the Fe d electrons supports this configuration in arsenopyrite. However, electron density calculations indicate that there is negligible electron density present between Fe atoms. This result indicates that cation-anion interactions are dominant in arsenopyrite. The pyrite Fe 3d orbital is split below the Fermi level, whereas the arsenopyrite Fe 3d orbital is not split, which can be attributed to the stronger interatomic bonding effects between Fe and S atoms in pyrite compared to arsenopyrite. It is found that the d-p orbital interactions between Fe and S atoms lead to bonding-antibonding splitting in both pyrite and arsenopyrite. However, the bonding effects between pyrite Fe and S atoms are stronger than in arsenopyrite. In arsenopyrite, the bonding interaction between the As 4p and Fe 3d orbitals is very weak, while the antibonding effect is very strong. The p-p orbital interaction is the dominant effect in As–S bonding. Frontier orbital calculations indicate that the Fermi levels of pyrite and arsenopyrite are notably close to each other, resulting in similar electrochemical activities. Orbital coefficient results show that the pyrite Fe 3d and S 3p orbitals are the active orbitals in the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), respectively. In the case of arsenopyrite, Fe 3d orbitals are very active in both the HOMO and LUMO. Moreover, the activity of the As 4p in the HOMO is greater than S 3p, whereas the opposite situation occurs in the LUMO. Based on these results, As atoms could be one of the active sites for the oxidation of arsenopyrite. In addition, separation of arsenopyrite and pyrite could be achieved by utilizing the difference in chemical reactivities of iron in the two minerals.

Fluid inclusions in quartz from internally zoned barren and spodumene-bearing pegmatites associated with the Leinster granite of SE Ireland represent a variety of early and late hydrothermal fluids responsible for the development of pegmatites. Microthermometry and optical examination reveal two main populations of inclusions. The first (Type 1) comprises low-moderate salinity brines which homogenized at temperatures up to about 400 °C. The second (Type 2) appear to postdate the first population and are characteristically more saline and homogenized at temperatures mostly below 250 °C. Isochores for model type 1 inclusion fluids indicate that a late-magmatic/early-hydrothermal fluid developed from the Leinster granite at 675 °C. and 2.5 kbar and cooled isobarically into the spodumene stability field where complete crystallization of the pegmatites took place. Later, more saline, type 2 fluids of unknown origin may have contributed to the alteration of spodumene to muscovite and albite with the accompanying release of lithium from the lattice of spodumene.

The Hatapang granite was discovered during geological mapping and mineral exploration in northern Sumatra by the British Geological Survey in conjunction with the Indonesian Directorate of Mineral Resources. The pluton comprises a two-mica granite which shows significant greisenization and veining around its margins associated with Sn and W mineralization. An Rb-Sr isochron derived for the pluton indicates an age of 80 Ma and an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7151. This together with major and trace element data show the Hatapang to be of clear S-type affinity.

The greisens are quartz-mica-topaz rocks and are almost totally deficient in Na. Trioctahedral mica compositions progress from biotite through siderophyllite to zinnwaldite during final differentiation and greisenization of the granite. Accompanying dioctahedral micas are phengitic. Associated with late-stage differentiation of the granite is the precipitation of tourmaline and various Nb-Ta oxides. Sn and W mineralization is manifested as cassiterite in the greisens, while wolframite tends to be related to quartz veining. A later and lower temperature sulphide event produced a suite of base metal sulphides and Ag-Bi-Pb sulphosalts. The identification of a Sn-W granite of Cretaceous age in northern Sumatra provides a link with occurrences of economically important Late Cretaceous Sn-W granites in Thailand and Burma and increases the potential of an area which until recently was thought to lie outside the SE Asian tin belt.

Copiapite is a mineral of iron- and sulphate-rich acidic environments and has a general formula AFe3+4 (SO4)6(OH)2(H2O)20, where A = Fe2+, 2/3Fe3+, 2/3Al3+, Mg, Zn. The structure is built by infinite tetrahedral-octahedral chains and isolated octahedrally coordinated A sites. Our synthetic and natural copiapite samples can be divided into two large groups based on the orientation of the structural fragments. One group comprises copiapite phases where A = Al3+, Fe2+ or Fe3+ and we designate it as the structural type AL. The other group consists of copiapite with A = Mg2+, Zn2+ or Ni2+ and this is the structural type MG. The solid-solution series between Fe3+ and Al3+ copiapite is continuous. The series between Mg2+-Al3+, Mg2+-Fe3+ and Mg2+-Al3+-Fe3+ copiapite are not continuous; the samples with intermediate compositions contain two copiapite phases, one of the type AL and one of the type MG. The series between Mg2+ and Zn2+ copiapite is continuous only at 25°C. At 75°C, the Zn-rich portion of this systemcrystallizes a copiapite-like phase whose structure may be a superstructure of copiapite. The series between Al-Fe2+ and Mg-Fe2+ copiapite are not continuous and show complex behaviour of the intermediate compositions.

Natural hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O) dissolution and precipitation experiments were performed in closed-system reactors as a function of temperature from 22.5 to 75ºC and at 8.6 < pH < 10.7. The equilibrium constants for the reaction Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O + 6H+ = 5Mg2+ + 4HCO3– + 6H2O were determined by bracketing the final fluid compositions obtained from the dissolution and precipitation experiments. The resulting constants were found to be 1033.7±0.9, 1030.5±0.5 and 1026.5±0.5 at 22.5, 50 and 75ºC, respectively. Whereas dissolution rates were too fast to be determined from the experiments, precipitation rates were slower and quantified. The resulting BET surface areanormalized hydromagnesite precipitation rates increase by a factor of ~2 with pH decreasing from 10.7 to 8.6. Measured rates are approximately two orders of magnitude faster than corresponding forsterite dissolution rates, suggesting that the overall rates of the low-temperature carbonation of olivine are controlled by the relatively sluggish dissolution of the magnesium silicate mineral.

The reactivity of primary Pb metallurgical slags in high-molecular-weight (HMW) organic solutions has been studied in order to determine the processes of release and attenuation of metal and metalloid contaminants (Pb, Zn, Cu, As) in 'soil-like' environments. Slag was submitted to a 112-day batch leaching experiment in Suwannee River fulvic acid solution and peat water (∼50 mg DOC l–1). The leaching was coupled with investigation of the secondary phases (SEM/EDS, Raman microspectrometry) and thermodynamic speciation-solubility modelling using MINTEQA2. Metals and As are released in large amounts during the early stage of the experiment, followed by a decrease in the concentrations in the leachate as a result of adsorption on secondary (hydrous) ferric oxides (HFO/FO), predicted by MINTEQA2 calculations and confirmed on the leached slag surface by SEM and Raman spectrometry. Compared to other contaminants, Zn exhibits more pronounced mobility and is adsorbed on HFO/FO only at pH >7. Such a scavenging process may be predominant during the long-term interaction of slag with an HMW organic solution of real soil. As a result, the soil cover and subsequent re-vegetation of slag dumps may be considered as a possible scenario for slag management.

The structure of hibonite from Myanmar (space group P63/mmc, Z = 2, at room temperature a = 5.5909(1), c = 21.9893(4) Å), with simplified formula CaAl12O19 and composition (Ca0.99Na0.01)Σ1.00 was investigated between temperatures of 100 K and 923 K by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Structure refinements have been performed at 100, 296, 473 and 923 K. In hibonite from Myanmar, Ti substitutes for Al mainly at the octahedral Al4 site and, to a lesser degree, at the trigonal bipyramidal site, Al2. The Al4 octahedra build face-sharing dimers. If Ti4+ substitutes at Al4, adjacent cations repulse each other for electrostatic reasons, leading to off-centre cation displacement associated with significant bond-length distortion compared to synthetic (Ti-free) CaAl12O19. Most Mg and smaller proportions of Zn and Si are assigned to the tetrahedral Al3 site. 12-coordinated Ca in hibonite replaces oxygen in a closest-packed layer. However, Ca is actually too small for this site and engages in a ‘rattling-type’ motion with increasing temperature. For this reason, Ca does not significantly increase thermal expansion coefficients of hibonite. The expansion of natural Ti,Mg-rich hibonite between 296 and 923 K along the x and the z axes is αa = 7.64×10–6 K–1 and αc = 11.19×10–6 K–1, respectively, and is thus very similar to isotypic, synthetic CaAl12O19 and LaMgAl11O19 (LMA).

Bonazziite is a new mineral from Khaidarkan deposit, Kyrgyzstan and represents the natural analogue of the β-form of the well known As4S4 compound. It occurs as rare crystals up to 100 μm across associated with realgar, sulfur, wakabayashilite, alacránite, non-stoichiometric As4S4+x sulfides and stibnite in a calcite matrix. In thick section, bonazziite is opaque with a resinous lustre and a dark-orange streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN15) is 70 kg/mm2 (range: 60–76) (Mohs hardness of ∼2½). In plane-polarized incident light, bonazziite is strongly bireflectant and pleochroic from orange to light red. The mineral shows orange to red internal reflections. Between crossed polars, the mineral is strongly anisotropic with greyish to light-blue rotation tints. Reflectance percentages in air for Rmin and Rmax are 19.9, 22.2 (471.1 nm), 19.1, 21.3 (548.3 nm), 18.8, 19.7 (586.6 nm) and 17.8, 18.9 (652.3 nm), respectively. Bonazziite is monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 9.956(1), b = 9.308(1), c = 8.869(1) Å, β = 102.55(2)° and V = 802.3(2) Å3, Z = 4. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0263 for 735 reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo)] is based on the As4S4 cage-like molecule, in which each As atom links one As and two S atoms. The As4S4 molecule is identical to that found in the structure of realgar. The six strongest powder diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 5.74 (100) (1̄11); 4.10 (60) (021); 3.92 (50) (1̄12); 3.12 (60) (022, 310); 2.95 (50) (221, 202); 2.86 (80) (2̄22, 1̄31). a mean of six electron microprobe analyses gave the formula As3.95S4.05, on the basis of eight atoms. The new mineral has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA No. 2013-141) and named for Paola Bonazzi, in recognition of her seminal contributions to the study of arsenic sulfides and their alteration induced by exposure to light.

The new mineral species barlowite, ideally Cu4FBr(OH)6, has been found at the Great Australia mine, Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. It is the Br and F analogue of claringbullite. Barlowite forms thin blue, platy, hexagonal crystals up to 0.5 mm wide in a cuprite-quartz-goethite matrix associated with gerhardtite and brochantite. Crystals are transparent to translucent with a vitreous lustre. The streak is sky blue. The Mohs hardness is 2–2.5. The tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular and there is one perfect cleavage on {001}. Density could not be measured; the mineral sinks in the heaviest liquid available, diluted Clerici solution (D &3.8 g/cm3). The density calculated from the empirical formula is 4.21 g/cm3. Crystals are readily soluble in cold dilute HCl. The mineral is optically non-pleochroic and uniaxial (–). The following optical constants measured in white light vary slightly suggesting a small variation in the proportions of F, Cl and Br: ω 1.840(4)–1.845(4) and ε 1.833(4)–1.840(4). The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of 18 oxygen atoms and H2O calculated to achieve 8 anions and charge balance, is Cu4.00F1.11Br0.95Cl0.09(OH)5.85. Barlowite is hexagonal, space group P63/mmc, a = 6.6786(2), c = 9.2744(3) Å , V = 358.251(19) Å3, Z = 2. The five strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d(Å )(I)(hkl)]: 5.790(100)(010); 2.889(40)(020); 2.707(55)(112); 2.452(40)(022); 1.668(30)(220).

Ten rather uniform tholeiitic basalt flows totalling a thickness of 190 m from Sagar, India, contain two stratigraphical breaks. Major element variation allows the flows to be grouped into two eruption cycles. Due to intraflow variation, however, chemical composition is unlikely to be useful in widespread correlation of flow sequence. The initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios vary from 0·7039 to 0·7084 with Rb and Sr averaging 6·5 and 184 ppm respectively and Rb/Sr ratios ranging from 0·002 to 0·224, with no systematic relationship between the initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and other chemical parameters. Bulk crustal contamination is considered unlikely; selective introduction of 87Sr from the granitic basement is postulated.

Uraniferous particles from contaminated environmental samples were analysed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDXA) and microfocus extended X-ray absorption fine structure (mEXAFS) spectroscopy. The particles of interest are uranium oxides, which were released into the environment by the combustion of scrap depleted uranium (DU) metal at a factory in Colonie, New York, USA. Most of the identified particles appear to have primary, ‘as emitted’ morphologies; some have evidence of minor dissolution, including corrosion pitting. Polycrystalline and often hollow microscopic spheres were identified, which are similar to particles produced by DU munitions impacting armoured targets. They are attributed to the autothermic oxidation of melt droplets. The compositions of the analysed spheres are dominated by UO2+x with variable amounts of U3O8, two of the least soluble and least bioaccessible phases of U. These particles, collected from dusts and soils, have survived more than 25 y in the terrestrial environment. This study further supports the case for using Colonie as an analogue for battlefield DU contamination.

The following ages determined by the complete lead method have been accepted for minerals from a number of localities: uraninite, Nkana, Northern Rhodesia, 522±15 m.y. ; brannerite, Kansanshi, Northern Rhodesia, 503±15 m.y. ; uraninite, Shinkolobwe, Katanga, 642±20 m.y. ; davidite, Mavuzi, Mozambique, 578±15 m.y.; monazite, Monkey Bay, Nyasaland, 597±25 m.y.; samarskite, north-west Kenya, 635±25 m.y. The significance of the results is briefly considered.
