Bandy (1938) described as metavoltine? a mineral coming from Chuquicamata (Chile) with chemical composition K2Na6Fe3+(SO4)12(OH)2·20H2O. Owing to some differences between this mineral and that first described by Blaas (1883), doubts persist on the identity of these two compounds. X-ray analyses were performed to clarify the relation between them. An artificial product, closely related to metavoltine as regards lattice and chemical composition, was also studied, and affords a better understanding of the Na and K diadochy already observed in metavoltine.

Data for U, Th, and K, determined by epithermal neutron activation methods, are reported for Lower and Middle Dalradian lithologies from Co. Donegal, Ireland. Abundances are identical to rocks with stratigraphical correlation in the Scottish Dalradian and appear not to have been affected by regional metamorphism to biotite and possibly even garnet grade during the Grampian orogenic phase, or later contact metamorphism in the aureole of the Main Donegal pluton. Uraniferous Dalradian lithologies have not been encountered in Donegal. Incorporation of Dalradian rocks, either by assimilation or as extensive raft trains within the Main Donegal granite, is therefore unlikely to have contributed to the development of known pegmatite-hosted U mineralization associated with this late Caledonian pluton.

A new occurrence of barysilite, Pb8Mn(Si2O7)3, at the polymetallic Garpenberg Norra Zn-Pb deposit, Hedemora, Dalarna, Sweden, is described. The mineral, which forms colourless, transparent grains, is characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron-microprobe analyses. The assemblage includes tephroite, zincian jacobsite, manganoan diopside and others. The crystal structure of a barysilite crystal from Garpenberg Norra was redetermined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (Mo-Kα, CCD area detector) and has been refined in space group Rc with a = 9.804(1), c = 38.416(8)Å, V = 3197.8(8)Å3, to R1 = 2.32% for 1025 ‘observed’ reflections with Fo >4σ(Fo). A previous, low-precision structure determination (Lajzérowicz, 1965; R = 20%) is confirmed but improved considerably. The structure contains one distorted MnO6 polyhedron with six equivalent Mn–O bonds (2.224 Å), one Si2O7 disilicate unit with an Si–O–Si angle of 120.9°, and two non-equivalent Pb sites. The Pb1 site has a highly irregular, one-sided coordination with six O ligands, indicating a stereoactive 6s2 lone-electron pair on the Pb2+ ion, whereas the [6+3]-coordinated Pb2 site is fairly regular, with Pb–O distances of 2.540 (3×), 2.674 (3×) and 3.098 (3×) Å. The Pb2 site contains ~10% of Ca (+Ba) replacing Pb, corresponding to the structural formula Pb16(Pb,Ca)22Mn(Si2O7)3. This is the first direct proof that not only the M site in barysilite-type Pb8M(Si2O7)3 compounds can be replaced by divalent cations.

A thermodynamic prediction of the Gibbs free energy of formation (ΔGfo) of nukundamite (empirical composition Cu5.5FeS6.5) was made in order to specify whether the nukundamite + chalcopyrite or the bornite + pyrite assemblage is stable in the Cu-Fe-S system. The results of calculations using previously reported data of ΔGfo values of some Cu-Fe-sulphide minerals in equilibrium with nukundamite indicate that the total free energy of the nukundamite + chalcopyrite assemblage is appreciably higher than that of the bornite + pyrite assemblage in the temperature range 250–400°C. This means that nukundamite + chalcopyrite is a metastable assemblage under common ore-forming conditions.

The occurrence of nukundamite is not uncommon in the Fijian kuroko deposits in contrast to the Japanese kuroko deposits. A thermochemical treatment for this phenomenon leads to the interpretation that the black ore containing nukundamite in the Fijian deposit was formed under relatively highsulphidation and low-pH conditions. This suggestion is in good agreement with the present experimental result that the bornite + pyrite assemblage was produced in the temperature range 350–250°C by using near-neutral hydrothermal solutions.

A zeolite found in a soil profile developed in Danian chalk was studied. The results showed that it is a heulandite, temperature-stable to above 600°C with a Si/Al ratio of 2.88 and almost completely K-exchanged. The mineral probably formed under burial diagenetic conditions in the chalk formation.

Milarite was found in a cavity of a small pegmatitic segregation in association with albite, stilpnomelane and chabazite. Hexagonal, well-shaped crystals of milarite up to 4 mm in length are transparent, pale green in colour, and show bright green cathodoluminescence. The refractive indices are: ω = 1.535, ε = 1.534(Na). D = 2.55 g cm−3. The unit cell dimensions are: a 10.418(4), c 13.817(7) Å, V 1298.7 Å3. Anomalous biaxial sectors and birefringent optical patterns are visible in basal section. 2V varies from 34° in the {0001} sector to 64° in {101} sector. OAP azimuths are related to the external hexagonal symmetry of the crystals. Microprobe analyses of sections perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis revealed a uniform distribution of alkalis, mainly K2O, whereas CaO and Al2O3 contents are slightly higher in prismatic and pyramidal sectors than in the basal sector, but no systematic chemical zoning can be distinguished. The Al2O3 content decreases in the outer zone of the crystal studied due to Be-Al substitution. The average ‘anhydrous’ chemical formula of the Strzegom milarite is: (K0.98Na0.01)Ca1.93Mn0.02(Be2.16Al0.93)(Si12O30). Infra-red data indicate the presence of H2O molecules in the milarite. Internal growth structures of the crystals indicate rhythmic fluctuations of the growth rate resulting in an internal strain, inducing anomalous optical patterns. HRTEM study did not reveal any significant distortion of the milarite lattice.

Debattistiite, ideally Ag9Hg0.5As6S12Te2, is a new mineral (IMA-CNMNC 2011-098) from the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs as very rare tabular euhedral crystals up to 150 μm across in cavities in dolomitic marble, associated with realgar, rutile, trechmannite and hutchinsonite. Debattistiite is opaque with a metallic lustre and a grey streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 80 kg mm–2 (range: 65–94), corresponding to a Mohs hardness of 2–2½. In reflected light debattistiite is dark grey, highly bireflectant and weakly pleochroic from dark grey to a slightly greenish grey. Between crossed polars it is highly anisotropic with brownish to blue rotation tints. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths (Rmin and Rmax) are 27.2, 34.5 (471.1 nm), 25.5, 31.0 (548.3 nm), 22.9, 28.4 (586.6 nm), and 20.1, 25.2 (652.3 nm), respectively.

Debattistiite is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 7.832(5), b = 8.606(4), c = 10.755(5) Å, α = 95.563(9), β = 95.880(5), γ = 116.79(4)°, V = 635.3(6) Å3 and Z = 1. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0826 for 795 reflections with I > 2σ(I)] consists of corner-sharing AsS3 pyramids forming three-membered distorted rings linked by Ag atoms in triangular or tetrahedral coordination.

The five strongest powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are as follows: 10.56 (6) (001); 3.301 (5) (12); 2.991 (4) (22); 2.742 (1) and 2.733 (10) (30). A mean of nine electron microprobe analyses gave: Ag 44.88, Hg 4.49, As 20.77, S 17.72, Te 11.82; total 99.68 wt.%, which corresponds to Ag9.02Hg0.49As6.012S11.98Te2.01, on the basis of 29.5 atoms. The new mineral is named for Luca De Battisti, a systematic mineralogist and expert on the minerals of Lengenbach quarry.

Pink-orange crystals of a composition within the ferri-obertiite compositional space were found in vesicles in a pale beige silicate vein found from a basalt quarry at Mount Rothenberg, Eifel district, Germany. Associated minerals are potassic feldspar, alpha quartz paramorphic afterbeta quartz, eifelite (the second occurrence after the Caspar quarry at Bellerberg volcano, Eifel region), tridymite, rutile, roedderite and other amphiboles. The ideal formula of ferri-obertiite is ANaBNa2C(Mg3Fe3+Ti)TSi8O22WO2; the empirical formula derived for the holotype specimen from Mount Rothenberg from the results of electron-microprobe analysis and single-crystal structure refinement is A(Na0.76K0.22)∑0.98B(Na1.61Ca0.35Mn0.042+)∑2.00C(Mg3.58Mn0.112+Fe0.623+Ti0.664+Cr0.013+Zn0.01Ni0.01)∑5.00T(Si7.82Ti0.124+Al0.06)∑8.00O22W[O1.26F0.55(OH)0.19]∑2.00. The unit-cell dimensions are a = 9.7901(7), b = 17.9354(13), c = 5.2892(4)Å, β= 104.142(2)°, V = 900.58 (11) Å3. The space group is C2/m, Z = 2. Ferri-obertiite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.664, β = 1.680, γ = 1.722, all ±0.002 and 2V (meas.) = 66.4(3)o, 2V (calc.) = 64.7o.The strongest eight reflections in the powder X-ray pattern [d values (in Å), I, (hkl)] are: 2.704, 100, (151); 3.116, 76, (310); 3.388, 72, (131); 8.931, 72, (110); 2.529, 67, (202); 2.583, 39, (061); 2.160, 38, (261); 3.260, 37, (240). Both the mineral and thename have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA 2015-079); the rock specimen has been deposited at the Museo di Mineralogia, Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e dell'Ambiente, Universitàdegli Studi di Pavia, under the code 2015-02.

Philipsburgite has been redefined as the intermediate member of the goldhillite–philipsburgite–kipushite isomorphous series with the ideal formula Cu5Zn[(AsO4)(PO4)](OH)6⋅H2O due to the site-selective As–P substitution. The new mineral goldhillite, ideally Cu5Zn(AsO4)2(OH)6⋅H2O [or Cu5Zn(AsO4)(AsO4)(OH)6⋅H2O], is the arsenate end-member of this series. Goldhillite occurs on fracture surfaces in a rock comprised mostly of quartz with iron hydroxides in association with mixite, cornwallite and conichalcite. Goldhillite forms transparent, bright emerald-green, tabular crystals with vitreous lustre, flattened on {100}, up to 1 mm across and in rosettes up to 1.5 mm. The mineral is brittle with uneven fracture and perfect cleavage on {100}; the Mohs hardness is 3.5. The calculated density for the holotype is 4.199 g cm–3. The Raman spectrum is consistent with the presence of H2O-molecules, OH-groups, AsO4 tetrahedra and traces of PO4. Electron microprobe analyses of goldhillite (H2O content based on the crystal structure) provided: CuO 48.91, ZnO 13.18, As2O5 26.06, P2O5 3.25, H2O 8.97, total 100.37 wt.%. The empirical formula for goldhillite based on O = 15 apfu is (Cu4.69Zn1.23)Σ5.92(As0.86P0.18O4)2(OH)5.61⋅H2O. The crystal structures of goldhillite and philipsburgite were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R1 = 0.054 (for 2365 I > 2σI reflections) and 0.052 (for 2308 I > 2σI reflections), respectively. Goldhillite is monoclinic, P21/c, a = 12.3573(5), b = 9.2325(3), c = 10.7163(4) Å, β = 97.346(4)°, V = 1212.59(8) Å3 and Z = 4. Philipsburgite is monoclinic, P21/c, a = 12.3095(9), b = 9.2276(3), c = 10.7195(3) Å, β = 97.137(7)°, V = 1208.16(10) Å3 and Z = 4. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern of goldhillite [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 4.09 (28)(300), 3.41 (23)(12$\bar{2}$, 221, 311), 2.57 (100)(132, 11$\bar{4}$, 20$\bar{4}$), 2.17 (18)(42$\bar{3}$, 332), 1.95 (22)(432) and 1.54 (20)(13$\bar{6}$, 060). Goldhillite is named after its type locality, the Gold Hill mine, Tooele County, Utah, USA.

Four new chemical analyses are reported for riebeckites of the hypersolvus granites of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Riebeckites of southern New England are enriched in Li+, which appears to substitute for Fe2+, with additional Na+ coming in to compensate for the charge imbalance.

Backscattered electron imaging of cordierite-muscovite intergrowths near the margin of a schist xenolith in trachytic tephra of the Wehr Volcano, East Eifel area, Germany, show that they have undergone disequilibrium melting to form spinel + biotite + sillimanite/?mullite + peraluminous melt. Textures indicate that in the initial stage of reaction, spinel, biotite and sillimanite/?mullite formed with melt produced in cordierite and spinel + ?mullite with melt after muscovite, providing evidence of two different reaction pathways. Fe-Mg distributions between biotite/spinel, cordierite/spinel, cordierite/ biotite suggest a melting temperature of ∼770°C, implying overstepping of various calculated and experimentally determined mineral breakdown curves of between 30 and 170°C during short-term heating before the xenolith was quenched on eruption.

Phosphatic limestones and a related soil were described from collections made by the first Royal Society coral-reef-boring expedition to Funafuti in 1896 (Cooksey, 1896; David and Sweet, 1904, Judd, 1904; Sollas, 1904; cf. Cullis, 1904). Although there is some geographic uncertainty about the source of some of Judd's samples, the specimens came from three localities on Funafuti, the largest being on Amatuku.

Lead and lead minerals have been used for medical purposes throughout human history. For example, galena was used as an eye salve in pre-Dynastic Egypt and by the ancient Indian civilisations of Mohendro-Daro and Harappa some 3200 to 2800 B.C. (Nriagu, 1983). The use of lead and other heavy metals and their compounds in Ayurveda, the Hindu system of medicine, can be traced back to the first century A.D. when Jain and Buddhist healers began to encourage the use of these substances instead of animal products (Mukherjee, 1992).

Late-stage acid pegmatites veining the predominantly ultrabasic Currywongaun-Doughruagh intrusion are frequently associated with amphibole-rich reaction borders in the adjacent wall-rocks. The chemical and mineralogical changes resulting from reaction between an acid pegmatite vein and the orthopyroxenite wall-rock are assessed from chemical analyses of rocks and microprobe analyses of the amphiboles forming the zoned reaction border. The main chemical change was the addition of H2O to the wall-rock; otherwise the formation of the anthophyllite and hornblende of the reaction border from pyroxene was virtually isochemical. Enrichment in other chemical species, notably Ca and AI, was restricted to the region close to the interface between the reactants. This inhibited style of reaction is attributed to the initial marginal crystallization of the acid pegmatite melt acting as a barrier to subsequent metasomatic interchange.
