Electron micrographs of scarbroite show thin platy crystals of about 1 μ size, having rhombic outlines with angles 66° ± 1° and 113° ± 1°. Single-crystal electron-diffraction patterns show rectangular net patterns, with d100 = 9·90 Å., d010 = 14·67 Å., γ* = 90° ± 0·05°. Strong hk0 reflections show a pseudohexagonal arrangement, but true symmetry is probably orthorhombic or monoclinic. Faces outlining rhombic forms are of type {11l}, .

Dr. Herbert Basedow of Adelaide generously presented in November 1931 for the British Museum collection of meteorites a pallasite which he had collected in Central Australia in 1924 while leading the Vice-Regal Expedition. During his extensive explorations in Central and Northern Australia it had remained unpacked for some years. He gives the locality as on the Burr Plains, NNE. of Bond Springs in the Alice Springs district ; lat. 23° 33′ S., long. 133° 52′ E. This is immediately north of the MacDonnell Ranges and about ten miles north of Alice Springs. The fragment was found lying on the surface and only partly buried in loose ferruginous sand. No doubt other pieces of this material remain to be found in the district.

In 1869 the late Dr. Sadebeek gave a brief description of a collection of rocks, accompanied by a map and profiles, made by Dr. W. Sehimper in the neighbourhood of Adowa and Axum, Abyssinia.

In the British Museum is a very similar collection, which was purchased from Dr. Schimper about the same time. As some of these rocks showed points of resemblance to the riebeckite-trachytes of Senafé, recently described by the author, a somewhat more detaBed petrographical examination of the specimens than Dr. Sadebeck was able to afford them appeared to promise something of interest.

The albitisation of pelitic metasediments to form adinoles adjacent to minor mafic intrusions has in the past been attributed to Na-bearing metasomatizing fluids emanating from the intrusions themselves. The chemistry and mineralogy of adinoles associated with dykes forming a high-intensity swarm in the Tallaght area, County Dublin, Ireland, confirms a metasomatic origin for the adinoles described, with Na and to a lesser extent Ca introduced into the country rocks at the expense of K. We suggest, however, that the source of the metasomatizing fluids was external to the dykes — possibly involving a hydrothermal system driven by an underlying magma reservoir that was parental to the dykes and also contributed volatiles to the hydrothermal system by degassing. Heat flow from the dykes was instrumental in promoting the reaction between muscovite in the country rock pelites and the Na(Ca)-bearing fluids to form albite, temperatures of ∼350°C in the country rocks within a metre of the contact being indicated. The mechanism of adinolization proposed is shown to be compatible with recent experimental work on the hydrothermal alteration of greywackes and basalts and also with the likely temperature gradients adjacent to dykes.

Curves relating spacing, Or content, and structural state of alkali feldspars are reviewed. Discrepancies between the compositions of heated natural perthitic alkali feldspars determined by this method and by chemical analysis are discussed and shown to be largely consistent with incomplete homogenization.

Bolivian minerals have been sent tbr examination and preservation in the British Museum oolleetiml at various times since 1894 by my old school-fellow Mr. Malcolm Robmts, A.R.S.M., now General ganager of the Compagnie Aramayo de Mines en Bolivie. Several of these have been described in the pages of this magazine (see vol. 14, p. 309). Although he has industriously collected Bolivian minerals for over thirty years he is only now rewarded by the discovery of a species new to science. The material which he has been good enough to entrust to me for description was recognized by him as being probably something new, and this was confirmed by a chemical analysis made by Mr. T. Burns MeGhie in the assay office at Quechisla in Bolivia.

Endoskarns formed where a swarm of diorite dykes have intruded calcite marble at Redcap Creek include an inner melilite-dominated, a wollastonite-dominated, and an outer massive tilleyite zone in contact with marble. The massive tilleyite is unusual in that it is coarse-grained (prisms 2–15 cm in length) and its deep grey colour contrasts with the lighter coloured varieties described elsewhere. A chemical analysis gives a formula close to ideal, with only minor substitution of Al, Ti, and Mg. Refined unit cell parameters are in close agreement with those quoted in the literature. The skarns have clearly formed by transport of Si, Mg, Fe, Al, and Ti from the igneous rocks, and Ca in the reverse direction from the marble. Activity diagrams derived from experimental data are most useful in interpreting the zonal sequence of endoskarns, and preliminary results suggest mass transfer at low Xco2 and temperature of the order of 800°C or higher for the formation of the massive tilleyite.

The Visoke complex is one of the main Quaternary volcanic centres of the Virunga Range, located north of lake Kivu. Mineralogical (microprobe) data are given for two representative leucitite lavas; one sample contains a complex coarse-grained xenolith (phlogopite, diopside, leucite, titanomagnetite, perovskite and apatite) and megacrysts of pyroxene, phlogopite and olivine scattered in fine-grained leucite-rich host lava. Compared with the typical leucite-dominated, low-pressure phenocryst assemblage of the two samples studied, the chemical trends of ferromagnesian crystals suggest an earlier igneous event (high-pressure phenomenon) strongly related to the leucite-bearing magma suite.

Coiraite, ideally (Pb,Sn2+)12.5As3Fe2+Sn4+S28, occurs as an economically important tin ore in the large Ag-Sn-Zn polymetallic Pirquitas deposit, Jujuy Province, NW-Argentina. The new mineral species is the As derivative of franckeite and belongs to the cylindrite group of complex Pb sulphosalts with incommensurate composite-layered structures. It is a primary mineral, frequently found in colloform textures, and formed from hydrothermal solutions at low temperature. Associated minerals are franckeite, cylindrite, pyrite-marcasite, as well as minor amounts of hocartite, Ag-rich rhodostannite. arsenopyrite and galena. Laminae of coiraite consist of extremely thin bent platy crystals up to 50 urn long. Electron microprobe analysis (n = 31) gave an empirical formula Pb11.21As2.99Ag0.13Fe1.10Sn6.13S28.0 close to the ideal formula (Pb11.3Sn2+1.2)Σ=12.5As3Fe2+Sn4+S28. Coiraite has two monoclinic sub-cells, Q (pseudotetragonal) and H (pseudohexagonal). Q: a 5.84(1) Å, b 5.86(1) Å, c 17.32(1) Å, β 94.14(1)°, F 590.05(3) Å3, Z = 4, a:b:c = 0.997:1:2.955; H (orthogonal setting): a 6.28(1) Å, b 3.66(1) Å, c 17.33(1) Å, β 91.46(1)°, V398.01(6) Å3, Z = 2, a∶b∶c = 1.716∶1∶4.735. The strongest Debye-Scherrer camera X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å, (I), (hkl)] are: 5.78, (20), (Q and H 003); 4.34, (40), (Q 004); 3.46, (30), (Q and H 005); 3.339, (20), (Q 104); 2.876, (100), (Q and H 006); 2.068, (60), (Q 220).

The new mineral campostriniite, (Bi3+,Na)3(NH4,K)2Na2(SO4)6·H2O, was found in an active fumarole (fumarole FA, temperature ∼350°C) at La Fossa Crater, Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy. It occurs on a pyroclastic breccia as white prismatic crystals up to 0.2 mm long, in association with adranosite, demicheleite-(Br), demicheleite-(I), argesite and sassolite. The mineral is monoclinic, space group: C2/c (no. 15) with a = 17.748(3), b = 6.982(1) c = 18.221(3) Å, β = 113.97(1)°, V = 2063(1) Å3 and Z = 4. The six strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are: [dobs in Å (I)(hkl)] 6.396(100)(110), 7.507(75)(202), 2.766(60)(316), 3.380(57)(312), 5.677(55)(111), 3.166(50)(4 0 2). The empirical formula (based on 25 anions p.f.u.) is Bi2.41N1.52Na2.41K0.48 S6.07H8.08O25. The calculated density is 3.87 g cm–3. Using single-crystal diffraction data, the structure was refined to a final R(F) = 0.051 for 3025 independent observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. Campostriniite is isostructural with görgeyite and belongs to the 7.CD group of the Strunz classification system. The structure contains two independent nine-fold coordinated sites, one of them located on a two-fold axis (M1) and the other one in general position (M2) essentially occupied by Bi3+ atoms and minor amounts of Na+ ions, an eight-fold coordinated site fully occupied by Na +ions and another eight-fold coordinated site occupied by NH+4 and K+ ions; three independent sulfate anions in a general position and a water molecule coordinated to M1 and located on a two-fold axis are also present.

The chemistry of opaque spinel, delafossite (Cu2O·Fe2O3), cuprite (Cu2O), cassiterite, nickel-olivine (Ni2SiO4), and bunsenite (NiO) from some copper converter slags has been investigated by electron microprobe analysis. The spinel has a complex composition containing up to 33.89% NiO and 47.69% SnO2, ranging from essentially Ni2SnO4 to (Ni,Fe2+)O4. The associated delafossite contains up to 19.18% NiO and 38.15% SnO2. The chemical variation of the mineral phases is evaluated, and it appears that Ni2+ enters the spinel and delafossite to charge-balance the octahedrally coordinated Sn4+.

Rhombohedral cleavage faces of quartz have been etched hydrothermally and with fused KOH. Stratigraphical etch patterns were observed on isolated cleavages, matched cleavage faces, and opposite sides of a thin flake. The angle between the () cleavage plane and the planes responsible for the stratigraphical patterns was almost equal to the interfacial angle, 46° 16′ between adjacent rhombohedral faces. It is concluded that the stratigraphical patterns formed by preferential etching reveal the edges of weak planes deposited during growth. The implications are discussed.
