To understand the rates of turnover of soil carbon, and hence interactions between soil carbon pools and atmospheric CO2 levels, it is essential to be able to quantify and characterize soil organic matter and mineral hosts for C. Thermal analysis is uniquely suited to this task, as different C compounds decompose during a heating cycle at different temperatures. In ‘air’ (80% He or N2, 20% O2), relatively labile cellulosic material decomposes between 300 and 350°C and more refractory lignin and related materials decompose between 400 and 650°C. Calcite and other common soil carbonate minerals decompose at 750–900°C. Using thermal analysis connected to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer, it is possible to simultaneously determine mass loss during combustion, evolved gas molecular compositions, and carbon isotope ratios for evolved CO2. As an example of the potential of the technique, the evolution of a fungally-degraded wheat straw shows initial isotopic heterogeneity consistent with its plant origins (–23.8% v-PDB for cellulosic material; –26.1% v-PDB for ligninic material), which homogenizes at heavier δ13C values (–21.0% v-PDB) as lignin is preferentially degraded by fungal growth. Simultaneously, it is shown that the evolution of nitrogen compounds is initially dominated by decomposition of aliphatic N within the cellulosic component, but that with increasing fungal degradation it is the ligninic component that contributes N to evolved gases, derived presumably from pyrrolic and related N groups produced during soil degradation through condensation reactions. Overall, the use of thermal analysis coupled to quadrupole and stable isotope mass spectrometry appears to have considerable potential for the characterization of discrete carbon pools that are amenable to the modelling of carbon turnover within soil systems.

The crystal structure of botallackite, Cu2(OH)3Cl, monoclinic, a = 5.717(1), b = 6.126(1), c = 5.636(1)Å, β = 93.07(1)°, V = 197.06(5)Å3, space group P21/m, Z = 1, has been refined to an R index of 3.8% for 350 observed (4σ) reflections, measured with Mo-Kα X-radiation on an automatic four-circle diffractometer. The structure consists of sheets of edge-sharing Cuϕ6 (ϕ = unspecified anion) octahedra of composition Cu2(OH)3Cl; these sheets are // {100}, and are joined by hydrogen bonding between oxygen and chlorine anions, thus accounting for the perfect {100} cleavage and the platy habit of botallackite.

The copper-bearing stratabound pyritic massive sulphide bodies contained in metamorphosed basic eruptives of Ordovician age at Sulitjelma in Nordland County, Norway, form one of the important fields of sulphide mineralisation within the Köli Nappe Complex. The sulphide bodies and their enclosing rocks were subject to successive stages of penetrative deformation and recrystallisation during the cycle of metamorphism and tectonic transport caused by the Scandian Orogeny. Textures within the ores and the immediate envelope of schists show that strain was focused along the mineralised horizons. The marked contrast in competence between the massive pyritic sulphides and their envelopes of alteration composed dominantly of phyllosilicates, and the metasediments of the overlying Furulund Group, led to the formation of macroscale fold and shear structures. On the mesoto microscale, a variety of textures have been formed within the pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite sulphide rocks as a result of strain and recrystallisation. Variations in pyrite:pyrrhotite ratios and in the texture and proportions of associated gangue minerals evidently governed the strength and ductility of the sulphide rocks so that the same sulphide mineral can behave differently, displaying different textures in different matrices. In massive pyritic samples there is evidence of evolution towards textural equilibrium by recrystallisation, grain growth and annealment during the prograde part of the metamorphic cycle. Later, brittle deformation was superimposed on these early fabrics and the textural evidence is clearly preserved. By comparing published data on the brittle-ductile transformation boundaries of sulphide minerals with the conditions governing metamorphism at Sulitjelma, it is concluded that most of the brittle deformation in the sulphides took place during or after D3 under retrograde greenschist conditions. Grain growth of pyrite in matrices of more ductile sulphides during the prograde and early retrograde stages of metamorphism produced the coarse metablastic textures for which Sulitjelma is well-known. In some zones of high resolved shear stress, pyrite shows ductile behaviour which could be explained by a dislocation flow mechanism operating at conditions close to the metamorphic peak. In those horizons in which pyrrhotite is the dominant iron sulphide, the contrast in ductility between silicates, pyrite and pyrrhotite has led to the development of spectacular tectonoclastic textures in which fragments of wall rock have been broken, deformed, rolled and rotated within the ductile pyrrhotite matrix.

After careful consideration of the semantics of status categories for mineral species names, minor corrections and disambiguations are presented for a recent report on the nomenclature of the pyrochlore supergroup. The names betafite, elsmoreite, microlite, pyrochlore and roméite are allocated as group names within the pyrochlore supergroup. The status of the names bindheimite, bismutostibiconite, jixianite, monimolite, partzite, stetefeldtite and stibiconite is changed from 'discredited' to 'questionable' pending further research.

The UG1 Footwall unit is a layered pyroxenite-norite-leuconorite-anorthosite sequence between the Middle Group 4 and Upper Group 1 chromitites of the Upper Critical Zone, and is c. 300 m thick at Rustenburg Platinum Mines, Union Section, where it shows an oscillatory fluctuation in whole-rock Mg/(Mg + Fe), Cr/Co, Ni/V and Fe/Ti ratios with stratigraphic height. This permits subdivision into 8 sub-cycles which match a subdivision based on cyclical variations in orthopyroxene and feldspar compositions. Constituent pyroxene grains of pyroxenites, norites and leuconorites alike contain rounded and embayed plagioclase inclusions in abundance. Sr-isotope disequilibrium prevails in some samples between the orthopyroxene and feldspar populations. Chemical and isotopic data support a model of pulsatory injection of limited volumes of a more primitive, mafic liquid into a resident column of depleted residua, from which sodic labradorite and Mg-poor bronzite were crystallizing. The depleted liquid is equated with the supernatant liquid residuum of buried cumulates (Sric. 0.7054) and the primitive liquid with magma parental to the UG1-UG2 lineage (Sri ⩾ 0.7068). The increase in leucocratic character of the 300 m column, with height, is attributed to the rising of low-density liquids enriched in the components of feldspar during separation of the pyroxenites. Deposition of the UG1 chromitite layers is attributed to mixing of a major influx of primitive liquid with a feldspathic residuum at the top of the UG1 Footwall unit. There is no evidence to indicate the participation of a discrete A-type liquid (Irvine and Sharpe, 1982) in this process.

Hydrocarbons (bitumens sensu lato) in sandstones have been recorded in several instances to have partially replaced their host rock, including quartz grains. Many replacive hydrocarbons are uranium-rich: associated non-uraniferous hydrocarbons are not replacive. Uranium is transported as carbonate complexes, which may be decomposed by organic acids to yield UO22+ ions and CO2. The UO22+ will be absorbed onto hydrocarbons before reduction to a mineral phase, generally uraninite; and the CO2 may be aggressive towards the silicate grains of the host sandstone. Accretionary nodules of replacive uraniferous hydrocarbon in red beds (e.g. at the cores of reduction spots) can provide valuable information about petroleum migration. They occur particularly in the vicinity of faults, and may record the interactions between metal-rich groundwaters and hydrocarbons leaking along a fault from an underlying reservoir. A trial study in Devonian sandstones of Easter Ross successfully traced a hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone reservoir from an occurrence of uraniferous hydrocarbon nodules.

Diamonds from George Creek, Colorado, preserve complex intergrowth textures between two major growth generations: homogeneous diamond with yellow-buff cathodoluminescence (CL); and diamond with blue-green CL and local growth zonation. Secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has revealed large variations in N concentration and C isotope composition within these diamonds. Even within single stones, N contents and δ13C values can vary from 0 to 750 ppm and 0 to −20‰ respectively. These variations are similar to those recorded elsewhere for entire diamond suites. The CL characteristics correlate directly with N: diamond with yellow-buff CL has uniform N contents, whereas the zoned diamond has bright blue CL bands with high N (50–750 ppm) and dark blue or green CL bands with low N (0–20 ppm). These bands are too narrow (10–5 µm) for analysis by IR spectroscopy. δ13C also varies between the two growth generations in any one diamond plate, and to a lesser extent within these generations, but shows no consistent correlations with either CL or N. The George Creek stones preserve evidence of extreme temporal and/or spatial variations in both δ13C and N concentrations during the period of diamond growth, but the factors controlling N content during diamond growth did not control δ13C.

Cordierite is a characteristic mineral of many peraluminous felsic igneous rocks. A combination of T-P-X parameters, which overlap the stability conditions for felsic magmas, control its formation. Critical among these parameters are relatively low T, low P, and typically high (Mg+Fe2+), Mg/Fe2+, A/CNK, aAl2O3, and fO2. Spatial and textural information indicate that cordierite may originate in one of three principal ways in felsic igneous rocks: Type 1 Metamorphic: (a) xenocrystic (generally anhedral, many inclusions, spatial proximity to country rocks and pelitic xenoliths); (b) restitic (generally anhedral, high-grade metamorphic inclusions); Type 2 Magmatic: (a,b) peritectic (subhedral to euhedral, associated with leucosomes in migmatites or as reaction rims on garnet); (c) cotectic (euhedral, grain size compatibility with host rock, few inclusions); (d) pegmatitic (large subhedral to euhedral grains, associated with aplite-pegmatite contacts or pegmatitic portion alone); and Type 3 Metasomatic (spatially related to structural discontinuities in host, replacement of feldspar and/or biotite, intergrowths with quartz). Of these, Type 2a (peritectic) and Type 2c (cotectic) predominate in granitic and rhyolitic rocks derived from fluid-undersaturated peraluminous magmas, and Type 2d (pegmatitic) may be the most common type in fluid-saturated systems.

Phosphate minerals are widespread minor constituents of the pallasites. Both anhydrous primary and hydrous decomposition/alteration phosphates occur. The primary minerals, in decreasing order of abundance, are whitlockite, stanfieldite, and farringtonite, as well as a possibly new phosphate. The decomposition phosphates are compositionally heterogeneous and thus complex. Some may be new minerals. The phosphate minerals serve as the major repository for the alkali elements in pallasites, with individual crystals containing up to several percent of Na+K. Equilibrium established between coexisting phosphide and phosphate defines a relatively narrow range of ƒO2 values.

A method of preparing compositions suitable for phase equilibrium studies in systems containing CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Fe-O2-Na2O employing a gelling technique is described. The subsolidus assemblages obtained from the recrystallization of some of these gels and from the recrystallization of devitrified glasses of the same composition are compared. It is not yet clear whether either starting material has any advantage as the gels may retain early formed metastable phases and the glasses may fail to nucleate stable phases.

Relics of HP-MT eclogitic assemblages related to the first metamorphic stage of the Hercynian orogeny in the Sierra de Guadarrama (Spanish Central System, SCS) are preserved as boudins of pre-Ordovician metabasites enclosed by felsic gneisses. Textures indicate a multi-stage metamorphic history starting in the MT eclogite facies (as deduced from the presence of omphacite and rutile included in garnet) and continuing through medium to low pressure granulite and retrograde amphibolite-greenschist facies. Thermobarometric calculations in the eclogitic paragenesis yield pressures of ∼14 kbar for temperatures in the range 725-775°C. Thermobarometry for the subsequent granulitic stage indicates a significant drop in pressure (P < 10 kbar) for similar temperatures of ∼750°C. Metabasites vary from gabbro to leucotonalites showing the typical Fe enrichment of the tholeiitic series. Chemical characteristics indicate a derivation from low-pressure crystallization of tholeiitic melts more enriched than typical MORB compositions. Their original location far from continental margins as evidenced by the absence of ophiolitic material in the area and their association with platform sediments suggests that eclogitization was related to intracontinental crustal subduction and thickening. The P-T conditions estimated in the metabasites for the first metamorphic stage are similar to ones deduced for the surrounding metasediments and suggest that the Hercynian crust could have reached a thickness of ∼70–80 km, which is more than the double the present thickness.

Nyböite occurs as porphyroblasts in the Jianchang eclogite in the Donghai area, northeastern Jiangsu Province, eastern China. The Jianchang eclogite contains some inclusions of quartz after coesite in clinopyroxene, garnet and epidote. It has colourless to pale-violet pleochroism. A thin rim with violet pleochroism often develops around nyb6ite and is taramitic. It is further retrogressed by the symplectite which is mainly composed of hornblende, aegirine-augite and albite. Nyböite is associated with jadeitic pyroxene in the Jianchang eclogite, although other porphyroblastic amphiboles in other Donghai eclogites are barroisitic to katophoritic and are associated with omphacite.

Fe-Mg partitioning between garnet and clinopyroxene and the presence of coesite pseudomorphs indicate P-T conditions in the Jianchang eclogite of about 740 ± 60°C and more than 28 kbar. Similar P-T conditions were estimated for other porphyroblastic amphibole-bearing eclogites in the Donghai area. Nyböite can occur in the Na-Al-Fe-rich local bulk composition under the medium to high temperature and very high-pressure conditions. Retrograde rim amphibole is poorer in NaB, variable in Si content, and richer in NaA variable than the porphyroblastic amphibole in the Donghai area. This roughly implies a P-T path where P decreases without a large decrease of T.

Kûngnât Fjeld is an intrusive complex resulting from three intrusive events involving trachyte, mafic trachyte and hawaiite magmas tapped successively from a single magmatic source. In situ differentiation produced gabbroic, syeno-gabbroic, syenitic, and quartz syenitic cumulates showing strong cryptic variation. Layered sequences of syenitic rocks total c. 3500 m. The compositional range is extended by late-stage minor intrusions of microsyenite and peralkaline granite. The principal cumulus minerals are feldspar (Ab40An60 to Or45Ab51An4); olivine (Fo56 to Fo1) and clinopyroxene (Di70Hd27Ac3 to Di6Hd90Ac4 followed by an abrupt change of trend towards Di3Hd78Ac19 in the layered series and nearly pure aegirine in some peralkaline residues). Intercumulus phases are amphibole (hastingsite to ferro-edenite to ferro-actinolite in the layered series with riebeckite to arfvedsonite in some associated granites) and biotite (annite31 to annite98.5).

Pontlyfni and Mount Morris (Wisconsin) are briefly described. Chondrule structure is absent from both, the latter is coarsely crystalline and both are sulphide-rich and contain forsterite and enstatite. Kakangari has well-defined chondrules; its silicate and sulphide minerals are unequilibrated, but similar to those of Pont-lyfni and Mount Morris (Wisconsin). New bulk chemical analyses are presented; Pontlyfni has 33·84 % total Fe and 7·04 % S; Mount Morris (Wisconsin) has 19·88 % total Fe and 4·72 % S; and Kakangari has 22·79 % total Fe and 5·30 % S. These three meteorites, together with Winona, have ordinary chondritic Mg/Si ratios, which result in their having abundant forsterite; this distinguishes them from E-chondrites. The four meteorites have Mg/Si ratios lower than those of C-chondrites, and they are more reduced than C or ordinary chondrites. These four unusual stones, therefore, have some chemical similarities, for example all have Mg/Si (atomic) of about 0·95, mean olivine composition ranging from Fa1 to Fa5, and significant Cr in the sulphide. Cumberland Fails chondritic xenoliths and other exotic fragments in polymict meteorites may be related to the four stones, which may ultimately prove to belong to a distinct chemical group of chondrites related to the irons of Group IAB.

These meteorites are described and discussed together because they have similarities in mineralogy, bulk composition, and oxidation state. All have more than 10 % forsterite (i.e. an olivine in the range Fa0·10). In our study we investigated the mineral chemistry of, first, Kakangari (Graham and Hutchison, 1974), and then Mount Morris (Wisconsin), with cursory examination of the previously described Winona (Mason and Jarosewich, 1967) and Cumberland Falls chondritic fraction (Binns, 1969; Jarosewich, 1967). By chance, the British Museum (Natural History) acquired the Pontlyfni stone during the course of this work. Pontlyfni fell in Wales in 1931, but is so far undescribed; it proved to be chemically and mineralogically similar to Kakangari. We thank Mr. J. R. Owen, the original owner, for its timely addition to the Museum's Collection.

Agates from the Bighorn district in Montana (USA), the so-called Dryhead area, and their adjacent host rocks have been examined in the present study. Analyses by XRD, polarizing microscopy, LA-ICP-MS, cathodoluminescence (CL), SEM and of oxygen isotopes were performed to obtain information surrounding the genesis of this agate type.

Investigations of the agate microstructure by polarizing microscopy and CL showed that chalcedony layers and macrocrystalline quartz crystals may have formed by crystallization from the same silica source by a process of self-organization. High defect densities and internal structures (e.g. sector zoning) of quartz indicate that crystallization went rapidly under non-equilibrium conditions. Most trace-element contents in macrocrystalline quartz are less than in chalcedony due to a process of ‘selfpurification’, which also caused the formation of Fe oxide inclusions and spherules.

Although the agates formed in sedimentary host rocks, analytical data indicate participation of hydrothermal fluids during agate formation. Trace elements (REE distribution patterns, U contents up to 70 ppm) and CL features of agate (transient blue CL), as well as associated minerals (fluorite, REE carbonates) point to the influence of hydrothermal processes on the genesis of the Dryhead agates. However, formation temperatures <120°C were calculated from O-isotope compositions between 28.9‰ (quartz) and 32.2‰ (chalcedony).

Clinotobermorite, Ca5Si6(O,OH)18·5H2O, has been found as a vein-forming mineral in gehlenitespurrite skarns at Fuka, Okayama Prefecture. It is associated with tobermorite, plombierite, apophyllite, and calcite. The clinotobermorite is colourless or white and occurs as tabular or acicular crystals. It is monoclinic with the space group Cc or C2/c. The unit cell dimensions are a 11.331, b 7.353, c 22.67 Å, β 96.59°. Microtwinning and stacking disorder on (001) are observed. On heating the clinotobermorite at 300°C the 002 spacing is reduced from 11.3 to 9.3 Å. Its refractive indices are α 1.575, β 1.580, γ 1.585, and the density 2.58 g/cm3 (meas.), 2.69 g/cm3 (calc). The Moh's hardness is 4.5. Calculation of the analytical data on the basis of six tetrahedral cations shows that this mineral has a simplified chemical formula Ca5.3Si6(O,OH,F)18·5H2O. The chemical composition and the unit cell are closely related to those of tobermorite. It is most likely that clinotobermorite is a low-temperature polymorph of tobermorite.

An epidemiological and environmental study of the area around Biancavilla (CT, Italy) was prompted by a significant incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma, which was not related to a specific occupational activity. An environmental dispersion of fibres was found and attributed to local quarry activities, whose extracted volcanic products also contained fibrous amphiboles and had been used extensively in the local building industry, especially in the period 1960–1970.

Abundant yellowish and grey-whitish asbestiform amphiboles with strongly asymmetric morphology were identified in this study, intimately associated with albitic feldspar, hematite and very minor orthopyroxene. These minerals fill the pores of the altered volcanic host rock (metasomatized benmoreitic lavas and pyroclastic rocks). The Rietveld method allowed a quantitative mineralogical analysis of the mineral mixture (24% amphiboles-asbestos, 73% feldspar and 3% hematite).

The crystal size and morphology of the grey-whitish amphibole fibres do not allow quantitative microprobe analyses; semi-quantitative EDS-SEM analyses of a prismatic mineral known to be fluoroedenite and the unknown fibrous crystals studied here suggest that they are the same mineral, although the fibres are generally depleted in Ca and Mg. The F content is the same in both occurrences. Unitcell parameters of the fibres are: a = 9.815(1), b = 17.992(3), c = 5.2733(6) Å , β = 104.547(9)º, V = 901.4(3)Å3, and the refractive indices are in the range 1.60 –1.63. Optical, chemical and Rietveld analyses of the fibres confirm their similarity with the yellow prismatic fluoro-edenite previously analysed.

Biancavilla is the first occurrence of amphibole fibres in a volcanic context (the Etnean volcanic complex). These fibres have a very anomalous composition (high ANa, IVAl and O3F contents) in comparison to other known oncogenic minerals.

Accessory minerals are often difficult to investigate with light optics as the mineral grains tend to be small and the refractive indices high. Textural features due to variations in composition are well displayed in such minerals by backscattered electron imagery under circumstances designed to select only the composition contribution to electron backscattering and displayed as atomic number (Z)-contrast imagery (ZCI). It is shown by this technique that compositional zonation patterns are very common and sector zoning in titanite is described for the first time. The compositional basis for zonation of titanites in this study is shown to be controlled by coupled substitutions involving the REE. The technique is particularly good at revealing rounded cores to zircon grains which are normally taken to be refractory grains from the magma source region, and ZCI studies may improve targeting of grains for U-Pb geochronological investigations. Several examples are presented of applications of the technique to accessory minerals encountered in polished thin sections of granitoids in the Caledonian of Scotland. The consequences of ZCI studies for trace element modelling of REE in granitoid petrogenesis are discussed.

The garnet-orthopyroxene Al barometer specifically considers the Al content of orthopyroxene in equilibrium with garnet resulting from Mg-Tschermaks substitution. It is demonstrated that P-T calibrations of this barometer derived solely from experimental data for the MAS system, such as that favoured by Finnerty and Boyd (1984, 1987) based on the data of MacGregor (1974), cannot be expected to yield meaningful pressure estimates for natural garnet lherzolite assemblages. The presence of additional CaO, FeO and Cr2O3 components in natural garnet lherzolites can be expected to influence substantially the Al partitioning between orthopyroxene, garnet and/or spinel at any particular P and T. Thus a more comprehensive barometer formulation is required, such as the one provided by Nickel and Green (1985) that is based on experimental data for the CMAS and SMACCR systems with thermodynamic modelling and addition of an Fe correction term.

It is further emphasised that for orthopyroxenes in natural garnet lherzolites the amount of Al introduced as Mg-Tschermaks substitution cannot be assessed simply as the total Al cation content since such orthopyroxenes frequently contain Al cations linked to Na substitution in M2 sites or to Cr, Ti and possibly Fe3+ in M1 sites. Revised algorithms for the calculation of specific orthopyroxene contents are presented. Application to analytical data sets for garnet lherzolite zenolith suites in the Thaba Putsoa and Mothae kimberlites generates revised upper mantle P-T arrays which refute the widely accepted advocacy by Finnerty and Boyd (1984, 1987) and Finnerty (1989) of an upper-mantle palaeogeotherm beneath northern Lesotho that is markedly inflected to a higher thermal gradient at the depths of derivation of the more chemically fertile, porphyroclastic textured, xenoliths.

Lamproites with high MgO, high SiO2 affinity are abundant only in SE Spain where the Cancarix outcrop (in the province of Albacete) occurs. The rocks of Cancarix are peralkaline, saturated to oversaturated in silica, very high in K2O, Th and LREE. The mineralogy and petrography show some variations which depend on the conditions of emplacement and rate of cooling of the magma. The following phases may be present: olivine, phlogopite, K-amphibole, clinopyroxene, sanidine, orthopyroxene, apatite, and, in minor amounts, Cr-spinel, minerals of the pseudobrookite group, ilmenite, roedderite, dalyite, carbonate, analcime (probably pseudomorphous on leucite), a silica phase, rutile, pyrochlore (?), britholite (?) and glass. The lamproites of Cancarix contain Cr-Zrarmalcolite, which is typical of lunar basalts and which has been found also in kimberlites. The composition of early magmatic spinel and the occurrence of Cr-Zr-armalcolite indicate low oxygen fugacity for the primitive magma and related mantle source, in agreement with recent experimental data on lamproitic systems. The redox conditions changed during crystallisation, leading to increase of the Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio in the system. During the later stages of crystallisation, the residual melts/fluids were depleted in alumina and enriched in several components, e.g. Na, Zr, Fe, REE, C1, etc. stabilising Na-Fe-clinopyroxene, dalyte, arfvedsonitic rims around K-richterite and other alumina-free phases which, on a chemical basis, have been identified as britholite and pyrochlore. Rough comparison with experimental systems and the geochemistry of the rocks suggests that the magma was generated at shallow depth (≪20 kbar) in the lithospheric mantle, which, after early depletion, underwent strong enrichment in many 'incompatible' elements.
