Basalts associated with sapphire deposits are widespread in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. In Vietnam, blue, green and yellow sapphires are recovered from eluvial and alluvial placers hosted in basaltic fields of the Dak Lak Province. Two distinct basalt suites are recognized in this field: a tholeiitic suite without any xenocrysts and an alkaline suite with mantle and lower crustal xenocrysts. The sapphires are enriched in Fe (0.43 to 1.26 wt.%), with moderate contents of Cr (33–1582 ppm), Ti (35–1080 ppm), Ga (149–308 ppm) and V (28–438 ppm) and they are poor in Zn and Mg. Their O-isotope compositions range from 6.0 to 6.9% and are not in equilibrium with the alkali basalts which have δ18O values between 5.0 and 5.7%. The U-Pb dating of zircons recovered from the basaltic placers provides evidence of two eruptional events: one at ~6.5 Ma followed by another one at ~1 Ma. The petrography of the basalts and the oxygen isotopic composition of the sapphires suggest that the sapphires are xenocrysts and that they crystallized in a deep magma chamber, at the lower continental lithosphere and the upper mantle boundary, in evolved melts issued from the fractionation of alkali basaltic magmas contaminated with lower crustal fluids.

Textural development of the felsic phases in two granodioritic rocks from the zoned Linga superunit of the Peruvian Coastal Batholith has been characterized using serial thin sectioning, image analysis and three-dimensional reconstruction. The study has shown how each mineral phase contributed to the texture during the formation and development of a contiguous crystal framework and during subsequent restriction, isolation and occlusion of the melt-filled porosity. The work highlights the important factors and potential problems in the use of serial thin sections and imaging in the analysis of complex polyphase rock textures.

The Nanga Parbat massif is a rapidly eroding, thrust-related antiform that is distinct from other regions of the Himalayan orogen in being both intruded by Late Miocene-Pliocene anatectic granites and permeated by a vigorous hydrothermal system. Exhumation is achieved by erosion during thrusting along the Liachar thrust in the apparent absence of extensional tectonics. At depths in excess of 20 km, small batches of leucogranitic melt have been generated by fluid-absent breakdown of muscovite from metapelitic lithologies. These melts ascend several kilometres prior to emplacement, aided by low geothermal gradients at depth and by interaction with meteoric water as they reach shallow levels. At intermediate depths (∼15 km) limited fluid infiltration is restricted to shear zones resulting in localised anatexis. Within the upper 8 km of crust, magmatic and meteoric fluid fluxes are channelised by active structures providing a feedback mechanism for focusing deformation. Leucogranite sheets show a range of pre-full crystallization and high-temperature crystal-plastic textures indicative of strain localisation onto these sheets and away from the country rocks. At subsolidus temperatures meteoric fluids promote strain localisation and may trigger cataclastic deformation. Since near-surface geothermal gradients are unusually steep, the macroscopic transition between distributed shearing and substantial, but localised, cataclastic deformation occurred at amphibolite-facies conditions (∼600°C). Even with the greatest topographic relief in the world, the meteoric system of Nanga Parbat is effectively restricted to the upper 8 km of the crust, strongly controlled by active structures.

The September 2007 ash eruption at Oldoinyo Lengai terminated a period of >30 y of relatively quiet extrusion of natrocarbonatite lavas. Ash erupted on the 24th September comprised nuclei of ijolitic phases, surrounded by finer peralkaline, silica-undersaturated material. The mantling material, as well as that forming nucleus-free particles, is dominated by nepheline, Ti-andradite, Na-melilite, combeite and a Na-Ca-phosphate-carbonate with minor amounts of K-Fe-sulphide and Mn-magnetite in a sparse matrix of alkali carbonate. The absence of clinopyroxene precludes this material from being termed either nephelinite or melilitite. We propose that the material represented by the mantles is an extremely undersaturated, peralkaline hybrid magma resulting from interaction between natrocarbonatite and nephelinite.

Isocubanite is a cubic polymorph of cubanite CuFe2S3, discovered in the submarine sulphide deposits of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and the Red Sea, in association with chalcopyrite, pyrrhotine, pyrite, sphaterite or wurtzite and anhydrite. It was previously obtained artificially and mentioned as iss, ‘intermediate solid solution of CuFe2S3 composition’. Crystals are cubic with a = 5.303(3) Å and strongest lines in the X-ray powder pattern are 3.059 (10) 111, 1.876 (7) 220, 1.602 (5) 311. Euhedral grains range from a few microns up to 400 µm, with a Vickers microhardness of 175(25) kg/mm2 for P = 100 g. Isocubanite is usually intimately intergrown with iron- and zinc-rich chalcopyrite and is opaque with a metallic lustre and a bronze colour. Pinkish brown and isotropic in polished sections; reflectance values (SiC standard) are: 420 nm 22.73%, 460 nm 26.87, 500 nm 31.34, 540 nm 34.79, 580 nm 37.35, 620 nm 39.11,660 nm 40.32, 700 nm 41.33, 740 nm 41.91, 780 nm 42.50. Electron microprobe analyses gave (wt. %): Fe 41.64–42.49, Cu 20.79–21.52, Zn 0.77–1.09, S 35.49–35.82, corresponding to the formula (Cu,Zn)Fe2S3.

Isocubanite is characteristic of high-temperature (> 200 °C) present-day submarine sulphide deposits where hot hydrothermal fluids are quenched by seawater as in EPR deposits or by cooler brines as in Atlantis II Deep, in the Red Sea; it is unstable and therefore unusual in fossil ores. This cubic phase was previously observed and described more or less accurately as cubic cubanite, cubanite II, chalcopyrrhotite and iss; the name isocubanite, proposed in order to clarify the nomenclature, and this new description, were approved by the IMA Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names.

Clays are the most complicated objects in quantitative mineral analysis of sedimentary rocks. Complex quantitative analysis of clays comprises four major steps: measuring bulk quantities, quantifying the mixed layering, determining the three-dimensional organization, and measuring the particle size. Computerization has resulted in major progress in all four areas during the last decade. X-ray diffraction remains the major tool of the quantitative studies of clays, supported by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (bulk quantities), chemical analysis (bulk quantities) and electron microscopy (particle size). This contribution reviews recent developments in the techniques used for quantifying clays and their properties, and looks at the use of these quantification techniques in K-Ar dating of geological processes.

Sustaining Earth, in the face of both technology thrusts and population dynamics, depends on our ability to maintain a delicate balance between human-promoted planetary modification and decline thresholds for land (soils), water, atmosphere, and biological systems. Mineralogy, as much as any other single science, will be central to this process. A set of links between Earth sustainability issues and the science of mineralogy are formulated and discussed in this discourse. The strongest ties exist in the areas of mineral-water and mineral-atmosphere interactions. Minerals are also particularly important in human disease generation. In addition, due to the role of minerals as invaluable economic resources, the environmental consequences of mining also come into play. New subdisciplines have recently emerged to bring mineralogy even closer to Earth sustainability issues, particularly mineral-microbe interaction science and nanomineralogy

In hypabyssal and crater-facies kimberlites of the Lac de Gras kimberlite field, perovskite occurs as reaction-induced rims on earlier-crystallized Ti-bearing minerals (magnesian ilmenite and priderite), inclusions in atoll spinels and discrete crystals in a serpentine-calcite mesostasis. The mineral is associated with spinels, apatite, monticellite, phlogopite, baryte, Fe-Ni sulphides, ilmenite, diopside and zircon. Uncommon accessory phases found in an assemblage with perovskite include titanite, monazite- (Ce), witherite, strontium-apatite, khibinskite, djerfisherite, wollastonite, pectolite, suolunite, hydroxyapophyllite and bultfonteinite. Three types of perovskite can be distinguished on the basis of composition: (I) REE-Nb-Al-poor perovskite with relatively high Sr and K contents (up to 2.2 and 0.6 wt.% oxides, respectively) occurring as mantles on priderite and inclusions in atoll spinels; (II) perovskite with elevated Al, Fe, Nb and LREE (up to 1.4, 8.3, 9.1 and 17.0 wt.% oxides, respectively) found as discrete crystals and rims on macrocrystic ilmenite; (III) perovskite significantly enriched in Na, Sr, Nb and LREE (up to 3.3, 3.4, 13.0 and 22.6 wt.% oxides, respectively) found as rims on perovskite I and II. The overwhelming majority of perovskite is represented by discrete crystals of type II. In some occurrences, this type of perovskite also has high Th contents (up to 5.5 wt.% ThO2) and Zr contents (up to 3.7 wt.% ZrO2). Textural evidence indicates that perovskite shows an overall evolutionary trend from the most primitive type I towards type III showing the highest Na, Nb and LREE contents. Perovskite of type I probably crystallized under relatively high pressures prior to the precipitation of MUM spinels. Perovskite II crystallized after magnesiochromite, pleonaste and MUM (magnesian ulvöspinel-magnetite) spinels, under increasing fO2. The most compositionally evolved type III formed during near-solidus re-equilibration of the earlier-crystallized perovskite. The compositional variation of the Lac de Gras perovskite can be adequately characterized in terms of five major end-members: CaTiO3 (perovskite), CeFeO3, NaNbO3 (lueshite), Na0.5LREE0.5TiO3 (loparite), and CaFe0.5Nb0.5O3 (latrappite).

Clinoptilolite-heulandite is reported from Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Palaeocene sediments in south-east England. It occurs mainly in 1–20 μm size fractions, and is associated with abundant montmorillonite and often also with glauconite and amorphous silica or low-temperature disordered cristobalite-tridymite. Its mode of occurrence and the associated minerals suggest an authigenic origin, but there is no evidence that the source material was volcanic.

A new mineral, yurmarinite, Na7(Fe3+,Mg,Cu)4(AsO4)6, occurs in sublimates of the Arsenatnaya fumarole at the Second scoria cone of the Northern Breakthrough of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. It is associated with hatertite, bradaczekite, johillerite, hematite, tenorite, tilasite and aphthitalite. Yurmarinite occurs as well-shaped, equant crystals up to 0.3 mm in size, their clusters up to 0.5 mm and thin, interrupted crystal crusts up to 3 mm × 3 mm on volcanic scoria. Crystal forms are {101}, {011}, {100}, {110} and {001}. Yurmarinite is transparent, pale green or pale yellowish green to colourless. The lustre is vitreous and the mineral is brittle. The Mohs hardness is ∼4½. One direction of imperfect cleavage was observed, the fracture is uneven. D (calc.) is 4.00 g cm−3. Yurmarinite is optically uniaxial (−), ω = 1.748(5), ε = 1.720(3). The Raman spectrum is given. The chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe data) is Na2O 16.85, K2O 0.97, CaO 1.28, MgO 2.33, MnO 0.05, CuO 3.17, ZnO 0.97, Al2O3 0.99, Fe2O3 16.44, TiO2 0.06, P2O5 0.12, V2O5 0.08, As2O5 56.68, total 99.89. The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of 24 O atoms per formula unit, is (Na6.55Ca0.28K0.22)S7.05(Fe2.48 3+Mg0.70Cu0.48Al0.23Zn0.14Ti0.01Mn0.01)S4.05(As5.94P0.02V0.01)S5.97O24. Yurmarinite is rhombohedral, R c, a = 13.7444(2), c = 18.3077(3) Å, V = 2995.13(8) Å3, Z = 6. The strongest reflections in the X-ray powder pattern [d, Å (I)(hkl)] are: 7.28(45)(012); 4.375(33)(211); 3.440(35)(220); 3.217(36)(131,214); 2.999(30)(223); 2.841(100)(125); 2.598(43)(410). The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to R = 0.0230. The structure is based on a 3D heteropolyhedral framework formed by M 4O18 clusters (M = Fe3+ > Mg,Cu) linked with AsO4 tetrahedra. Sodium atoms occupy two octahedrally coordinated sites in the voids of the framework. In terms of structure, yurmarinite is unique among minerals but isotypic with several synthetic compounds with the general formula (Na7–x ☐x )(M 3+x 3+ M 1–x 2+)(T 5+O4)2 in which T = As or P, M 3+ = Fe or Al, M 2+ = Fe and 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The mineral is named in honour of the Russian mineralogist, petrologist and specialist in studies of ore deposits, Professor Yuriy B. Marin (b. 1939). The paper also contains a description of the Arsenathaya fumarole and an overview of arsenate minerals formed in volcanic exhalations.

Minerals isostructural with sapphirine-1A, sapphirine-2M, and surinamite are closely related chain silicates that pose nomenclature problems because of the large number of sites and potential constituents, including several (Be, B, As, Sb) that are rare or absent in other chain silicates. Our recommended nomenclature for the sapphirine group (formerly aenigmatite group) makes extensive use of precedent, but applies the rules to all known natural compositions, with flexibility to allow for yet undiscovered compositions such as those reported in synthetic materials. These minerals are part of a polysomatic series composed of pyroxene or pyroxene-like and spinel modules, and thus we recommend that the sapphirine supergroup should encompass the polysomatic series. The first level in the classification is based on polysome, i.e. each group within the supergroup corresponds to a single polysome. At the second level, the sapphirine group is divided into subgroups according to the occupancy of the two largest M sites, namely, sapphirine (Mg), aenigmatite (Na), and rhönite (Ca). Classification at the third level is based on the occupancy of the smallest M site with most shared edges, M7, at which the dominant cation is most often Ti (aenigmatite, rhönite, makarochkinite), Fe3+ (wilkinsonite, dorrite, høgtuvaite) or Al (sapphirine, khmaralite); much less common is Cr (krinovite) and Sb (welshite). At the fourth level, the two most polymerized T sites are considered together, e.g. ordering of Be at these sites distinguishes høgtuvaite, makarochkinite and khmaralite. Classification at the fifth level is based on XMg = Mg/(Mg + Fe 2+) at the M sites (excluding the two largest and Ml). In principle, this criterion could be expanded to include other divalent cations at these sites, e.g. Mn. To date, most minerals have been found to be either Mg-dominant (XMg > 0.5), or Fe2+-dominant (XMg < 0.5), at these M sites. However, XMg ranges from 1.00 to 0.03 in material described as rhönite, i.e. there are two species present, one Mg-dominant, the other Fe2+-dominant. Three other potentially new species are a Mg-dominant analogue of wilkinsonite, rhönite in the Allende meteorite, which is distinguished from rhonite and dorrite in that Mg rather than Ti or Fe3+ is dominant at Ml, and an Al-dominant analogue of sapphirine, in which Al > Si at the two most polymerized T sites vs. Al < Si in sapphirine. Further splitting of the supergroup based on occupancies other than those specified above is not recommended.

The effect of heat treatment in air at temperatures from 200°C to 1000°C of two Cornish biotites has been studied using the M6ssbauer effect in 57Fe. One of the micas was also studied after heating in vacuo.

Progressive changes in the Mössbauer spectra of the materials after heat treatment can be correlated with the following processes: Oxidation of Fe2+ ions in isolated octahedral sites to give Fe3+ in the co-ordination Fe3+(OsOH); oxidation of Fe2+ ions in adjacent a-octahedral (cis OH−) sites to give Fe3+(O6); and oxidation of Fe z+ in adjacent a and b (trans OH−) sites to give either Fe3+(O5OH) or Fe3+(O6) depending on whether a shared hydroxyl group remains intact or otherwise (these processes occur at temperatures below 500°C Also, at higher temperatures, dehydroxylation of Fe3+(O5OH) to give more Fe3+ in the Fe3+(O6) configuration. Finally, in the temperature range 900 to 1000°C structural breakdown yielding α-Fe2O3 as the iron-containing phase.

The results and interpretation are in good agreement with thermogravimetric data and with a previous infra-red study. The mechanism of charge diffusion in the lattice during oxidation is discussed in the light of the results.

X-ray, density, refractive index, and optical absorption measurements have been made on metamict Ceylon zircons. The appearance of a previously reported anomalous optical absorption spectrum in low Ceylon zircons has been associated with small particles of cubic or tetragonal zirconium dioxide in a radiation-damaged zircon lattice, in both heated and unheated stones. No evidence of a previously reported second phase was detected in intermediate Ceylon zircons.

The structure hierarchy hypothesis states that structures may be ordered hierarchically according to the polymerisation of coordination polyhedra of higher bond-valence. A hierarchical structural classification is developed for sheet-silicate minerals based on the connectedness of the two-dimensional polymerisations of (TO4) tetrahedra, where T = Si4+ plus As5+, Al3+, Fe3+, B3+, Be2+, Zn2+ and Mg2+. Two-dimensional nets and oikodoméic operations are used to generate the silicate (sensu lato) structural units of single-layer, double-layer and higher-layer sheet-silicate minerals, and the interstitial complexes (cation identity, coordination number and ligancy, and the types and amounts of interstitial (H2O) groups) are recorded. Key aspects of the silicate structural unit include: (1) the type of plane net on which the sheet (or parent sheet) is based; (2) the u (up) and d (down) directions of the constituent tetrahedra relative to the plane of the sheet; (3) the planar or folded nature of the sheet; (4) the layer multiplicity of the sheet (single, double or higher); and (5) the details of the oikodoméic operations for multiple-layer sheets. Simple 3-connected plane nets (such as 63, 4.82 and 4.6.12) have the stoichiometry (T2O5)n (Si:O = 1:2.5) and are the basis of most of the common rock-forming sheet-silicate minerals as well as many less-common species. Oikodoméic operations, e.g. insertion of 2- or 4-connected vertices into 3-connected plane nets, formation of double-layer sheet-structures by (topological) reflection or rotation operations, affect the connectedness of the resulting sheets and lead to both positive and negative deviations from Si:O = 1:2.5 stoichiometry. Following description of the structural units in all sheet-silicate minerals, the minerals are arranged into decreasing Si:O ratio from 3.0 to 2.0, an arrangement that reflects their increasing structural connectivity. Considering the silicate component of minerals, the range of composition of the sheet silicates completely overlaps the compositional ranges of framework silicates and most of the chain-ribbon-tube silicates.

Infrared spectroscopy affords a rapid and easy method of estimating the position of a mineral in the olivenite-adamite solid solution series, and of estimating the amount of phosphate substitution in olivenites. Toman's discovery of the monoclinic symmetry of olivenites with up to approximately 20 atom % Zn/(Cu + Zn) has raised a problem in nomenclature. It is suggested that the definition of ‘cuproadamite’ be extended to cover all orthorhombic members of the series containing appreciable Cu. Studies of deuterated materials have helped to solve some of the absorption band assignments for olivenite-adamite, libethenite and related minerals.

Nevil Story-Maskelyne described in 1870 the mineral constituents of the Bustee meteorite, which was observed to fall in 1852 near Bustee about 45 miles west of Goruckpur, India. The stone, weighing 1429 grams, now preserved in the British Museum collections, was found to consist chiefly of enstatite and diopside, and two constituents proved to be new minerals. Pale, chestnut-brown spherules of calcium sulphide, CaS, Story-Maskelyne named oldhamite and golden-yellow octahedra found embedded chiefly in the oldhamite he named osbornite. One side of the meteorite has been ground to reveal the nodules of oldhamite and a coloured lithograph in W. Flight's book ‘A chapter in the history of meteorites’ reproduces the appearance of the chief mineral constituents very well. The minute octahedra of osbornite are easily visible with a lens in the meteorite itself.

Wadeite has been found only in a suite of leucite-lamproites from the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. The leucite-bearing rocks occur at a number of isolated volcanic vents that have in every instance broken through sedimentary deposits of Permian age. The nature of the mineral, wadeite, has been described by Prider. It is a potassium-zirconium silicate occurring as highly birefringent prisms up to 1 mm. in length with hexagonal-shaped basal sections. It is invariably replaced in part along the poor pyramidal cleavages by calcite.

Three natural spinels of different places of occurrence and compositions were investigated by means of microprobe chemical analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. All cation distributions between T and M sites were calculated from microprobe and XRD experimental data, by means of a mathematical model with appropriate assumptions. Fe2+ and Fe3+ assignments calculated in this way were compared with those observed in Mössbauer spectra. The satisfactory agreement found proves, at least in the samples studied, the reliability of the model and the assumptions used. In the spinels examined, such results show Fe2+ and Fe3+ virtually ordered in T and M sites respectively. Mössbauer data also revealed Fe2+ in different tetrahedral sites due to the next-nearest neighbour effect, probably as a consequence of spinel genetic conditions.

Intrusive calcite-carbonatite ejecta (sovite) in the lowermost tephra layers of the Mt. Vulture alkaline mafic-ultramafic volcano (Upper Pleistocene), is the first intrusive carbonatite sample from southern Europe. The sovite is of coarse granularity and shows some textural and mineralogical layering. It is mainly formed of calcite (up to 3.5 wt.% MgO, and 0.53 wt.% SrO), less dolomite (average 18.2 wt.% MgO, and up to 2.1 wt.% SrO), spinel (60 wt.% Al2O3, 26.5 wt.% MgO, 10.7 wt.% FeO) and olivine (Fo99). Perovskite and apatite have been found only as microlites. Intergranular vugs are scattered throughout the rocks and small composite inclusions occur in calcite.

The mineral chemistry, high temperature melt inclusions, overall isotopic compositions, and the REE distribution are consistent with a primary igneous origin. Compared with world average sovite compositions, the Vulture sovite has lower LILE and HFSE but Rb, Sr, Th and U are high. The REE abundance is typical of carbonatites, having an LREE/HREE value of ∼100. The δ13C (−4.8% SMOW) is in the range for mantle-derived carbonatites. The 143Nd/144Nd (0.512648±15) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.705978±10) ratios show close similarity between the sovite and the Vulture alkaline mafic rocks. The sovite ejecta are interpreted as a crystallization product of carbonate ultramafic liquid. In common with many shallow-level carbonatites from other localities, the recrystallization of rather pure Mg-calcite, the presence of dissolution vugs and the depletion of some HFSE and the relatively high δ18O values, suggest that a secondary process, such as hydrothermal leaching, affected the rock.

The evolution of the trace-element patterns of quartz during crystallization of pegmatite melt was investigated using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The contents of Al, B, Ba, Be, Cr, Fe, Ge, Li, Mn, P, Rb, Sn, Sr and Ti were analysed in quartz from the border, intermediate and core zones of four granitic pegmatites differing in degree of fractionation and origin. The material investigated originates from the pegmatite district of the Strážek Unit, Moldanubian Zone, Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic and includes: lepidolite LCT (Li-Cs-Ta) pegmatite from Rožná; berylcolumbite LCT pegmatite from Věžná; anatectic pegmatite from Znětínek; and intragranitic NYF (Nb-Y-F) pegmatite Vladislav from the Třebíč Pluton. The abundances of the elements analysed varied over wide intervals: <1 to 32 ppm Li, 0.5 to 6 ppm B, <1 to 10 ppm Ge, 1 to 10 ppm P, 10 to 450 ppm Al, 1 to 45 ppm Ti and <1 to 40 ppm Fe (average sample contents). Concentrations of Be, Rb, Sr, Sn, Ba, Cr and Mn are usually <1 ppm. Quartz from LCT pegmatites exhibits a distinct evolutionary trend with a decrease in Ti and an increase in Al, Li and Ge from the pegmatite border to the core. In comparison with the most fractionated rare-metal granites, pegmatitic quartz is relatively depleted in Al and Li, but strongly enriched in Ge. Quartz from simple anatectic and NYF pegmatites is poor in all trace elements with their evolution marked by a decrease in Ti and a small increase in Ge. There is little Al or Li and neither shows any systematic change with pegmatite evolution. Using the Ti-in-quartz thermobarometer, the outer zones of the Znětínek and Vladislav pegmatites crystallized at ∼670°C, whereas the border zone in the Rožná pegmatite yields a temperature near 610°C.
