The most striking rock now described occurs in the Northern Province of Tanganyika Territory, just west of the Great North road, and south of the track from Longido to Engare Naibor. A small group of specimens was collected by Mr. A. G. Clough of Industrial Minerals Ltd., and presented to the British Musemn (Natural History) in 1952 (B.M. 1952,133). The outcrops occur in the highly metamorphosed Basement Complex which forms small hills (The Matabatu Mountains) descending, at their margin, by step-faulting to a peneplaned surface cut out of much younger, unconformable volcanics; the faulting in the marginal area of the basement rocks forms the eastern side of the Rift Valley. The basement rock adjacent to the zoisite-amphibolite is usually anamphibolite with conspicuous large, brown-red garnets. The occurrence of this garnet-amphibolite is usually an indication of the proximity of the zoisite-amphibolite.

A closer understanding of the causes for the variation of refractive index with change of composition has been sought in terms of certain properties of ions. The study is confined to isostructural ionic crystals. It is assumed that polarization of the anions (usually O2− or F−) makes the principal contribution to the total refractive index effect, and that variation of refractive index is determined mainly by variable anion polarization. Polarization of the anion is controlled largely by the field in which it finds itself which, in turn, depends on the effective force of attraction of the cation: ionization potentials are used for the purpose of comparing such forces. For compounds involving pairs of 8- and 18-electron cations (Mg2+ and Zn2+; Al3+ and Ga3+; Si4+ and Ge4+; Ca2+ and Cd2+) or pairs of transition cations (Zr4+ and Hf4+; Nb5+ and Ta5+; Mo6+ and W6+) refractive indices are higher in the crystal that contains the cation of the element with the higher ionization potential. For larger suites of cations of various types (for example, Mg2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+, radii from 0·65 to 0·80 Å.) the predicted relationship between ionization potential and refractive index holds precisely for the compounds A2SiF6.6H2O (A2+, etc.), but only in part for other compounds; this may be due to the effect of the crystal field on certain 3d transition cations.

Fibres of hematite in kidney ore are elongated at right angles to the c-axis. The fibre axis, which may be normal to a face of either of the hexagonal prisms {101̄0} or {112̄0}, may show an abrupt change of orientation along the length of a fibre. There is little preferred orientation around the length of the fibres.

It is confirmed that in some calcite satin spar the fibres are elongated parallel to an edge of the cleavage rhombohedron; in other fibrous growths the elongation is either parallel to or Perpendicular to c.

It is well known to mineralogists, that Giesecke, who in the years 1806—13 travelled in Greenland, brought home from Julianehaab district some new minerals, which he handed over to the Copenhagen Museums. In 1853-4 Dr. Rink supplied the museum of the Copenhagen University with a large collection of the same minerals, mostly in large and fine specimens, and the same collections hove lately received a most valuable and considerable addition, through the travels of Mr. K. J. V. Steanstrup of the Danish Geological Survey of Greenland. Some of these interesting mino.rals, occurring in the Syenite on both sides of the fjords Tunugdliarfik and Kangerdluarsuk, have already long been known, whereas others had elther been not found there before or at least not analysed or described.

Davidbrownite-(NH4), (NH4,K)5(V4+O)2(C2O4)[PO2.75(OH)1.25]4·3H2O, is a new mineral species from the Rowley mine, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA. It occurs in an unusual bat-guano-related, post-mining assemblage of phases that include a variety of vanadates, phosphates, oxalates and chlorides, some containing NH4+. Other secondary minerals found in association with davidbrownite-(NH4) are antipinite, fluorite, mimetite, mottramite, quartz, rowleyite, salammoniac, struvite, vanadinite, willemite and wulfenite. Crystals of davidbrownite-(NH4) are light green–blue needles or narrow blades up to ~0.2 mm long. The streak is white, the lustre is vitreous, Mohs hardness is ca. 2, tenacity is brittle and fracture is splintery. There are two good cleavages in the [010] zone, probably {100} and {001}. The measured density is 2.12(2) g cm–3. Davidbrownite-(NH4) is optically biaxial (+) with α = 1.540(2), β = 1.550(5) and γ = 1.582(2) (white light); 2V = 58.5(5)°; moderate r > v dispersion; and orientation Z = b and Y ≈ a. Pleochroism: X = pale blue, Y = nearly colourless, Z = light blue; and Y < X < Z. Electron microprobe analysis gave the empirical formula [(NH4)3.11K1.73Na0.09]Σ4.93[(V4+1.92Mg0.01Al0.02)Σ1.95O2](C2O4) [(P3.94As0.12)Σ4.06O10.94(OH)5.06]·3H2O, with the C and H content provided by the crystal structure. Raman and infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of NH4 and C2O4. Davidbrownite-(NH4) is monoclinic, P21/c, with a = 10.356(6), b = 8.923(5), c = 13.486(7) Å, β = 92.618(9)°, V = 1244.9(12) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure of davidbrownite-(NH4) (R1 = 0.0524 for 2062 Io > 2σI reflections) consists of a chain structural unit with the formula {(V4+O)2(C2O4)[PO2.75(OH)1.25]4}5–, and a disordered interstitial complex containing five large monovalent cations (NH4+ and K+) and three H2O groups pfu. Strong hydrogen bonds form links within and between the chains.

In the Pontal auriferous lode, dominant saccharoidal quartz is associated with oligoclase, biotite, hornblende, tremolite-actinolite, sulphides (less than 2%), and disseminated native gold. Four main types of fluid inclusion have been distinguished based on their habit, distribution and spatial relation-ship with gold particles. Type S are primary multiphase large sized (100 to 200 µm) inclusions with homogenization temperatures (V + L → L) between 350 and 450°C. They contain siderite and/or calcite and graphite-like microcrystals as daughter phases. Commonly associated with these inclusions are tiny (50 to 100 µm) solid inclusions of biotite or actinolite. In most of these inclusions, only CH4 has been detected in the vapour phase. However some noticeable exceptions were observed (CO2/CH4 ratio near 0.85). Type C inclusions are later than gold and occur disseminated in quartz or along trails that crosscut quartz grain boundaries. They may contain nahcolite daughter crystals. CO2/CH4 ratios range from 0.0 to 0.5. Homogenization temperatures vary from 150 to 300°C. Type V are mainly gaseous CH4-H2O inclusions. They may occur as small-sized inclusions directly associated with gold particles. Type L are aqueous two-phase inclusions of late secondary origin.

The scattering of the CO2/CH4 ratios could be related to fluctuations of the oxygen fugacity that triggered gold precipitation at the time of trapping. These variations of fO2 with time could reflect unbuffered fluid-rock interaction with respect to redox conditions during quartz deposition.

Finally, gold deposition is interpreted to have occurred at elevated temperature (500°C) and pressure, compatible with boundary conditions between greenschist and amphibolites facies.

Electron-microprobe analyses of chromites from the Helgeland area, Norway, show that they are all low in zinc. Many chromites show physical properties identical with donathite (anisotropism; polar magnetism) but have cubic lattices. One exception, from Rødøya, shows an unusual deviation from cubic symmetry and that there may exist complex intergrowths of two different tetragonal lattices and a cubic lattice. The similarity between the chromites studied and donathite suggests that the chemistry and crystallography of that mineral may be more complex than is currently accepted.

Cr-rich Mg-sapphirines, which are more aluminous in composition than R2+:R3+:Si of 7:9:3 and are therefore considered to be peraluminous, are shown to have an inverse linear relationship between octahedrally co-ordinated Cr and Al. This balanced substitution, which has not previously been described, may be used to explain the major chemical variations exhibited in the described minerals. Since the peraluminous Cr-rich sapphirines are idioblastic it is suggested that they are stable members of the assemblages within which they occur. Peraluminous sapphirine is usually considered to be metastable but in this instance it is possible that chromium may assist in stabilizing its development.

Magnetite is common in carbonatites, and usually has octahedral habit. Abnormal crystals from Galapo, Tanzania, were long thought to be unique, but such crystals are now known to occur at seven localities in four countries. The magnetite is titaniferous, but not unusual in composition for its provenance. The abnormal crystals typically have large growth pyramids extending in one direction (occasionally in two or more directions). They appear to be formed by superimposition of macroscopic growth sheets, parallel to octahedral and other planes, giving a planar structure to the growth pyramid. The edges of the sheets may form low-index or more complex surfaces. Some sheets project beyond the bounding planes of the growth pyramid, which is not repeated in crystallographically equivalent orientations. This unusual mode of growth will be called stratiform. Recognition of these distinctive crystals elsewhere might reveal the presence of hitherto unsuspected carbonatites.

A recent bore-hole through the Shiant Isles picrite established the existence of 45 feet more of the picritic facies, and also the lower margin of the silt, at a point almost vertically below the exposed 35 feet previously investigated. In the light of new field and laboratory information the pieritic facies is briefly re-examined and its origin discussed.

The rate of decolorization of a Norwegian amazonite was studied at various temperatures: near 500° C. it was almost instantaneous, becoming successively slower with lower temperatures, until at 300° C. no change was visible in 10 hours. It is concluded that the colour is stable indefinitely below about 270° C. and that this is the maximum temperature at which the colour could have appeared.

Chemical analyses, optical properties, specific gravities, and cell dimensions are presented for six topazes. A linear relationship is confirmed between the b cell dimension and the OH/(OH+F) ratio.

Brinrobertsite, an ordered, mixed-layered, dioctahedral pyrophyllite-smectite (P/S), occurs in a metabentonite in the Ordovician Nant Ffrancon Formation near Bangor, N Wales. It comprises ~30% of the metabentonite, in association with quartz (~50%) and chlorite (clinochlore; 20%) which replaced glass shards and fine-grained glass matrix. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show sequences of dominant ~24 Å 001 lattice fringes inferred to correspond to 2:1 layers with alternate pyrophyllite-like (low-charge) and smectite-like (higher-charge) interlayers (i.e. R1 ordering). The hk0 diffraction patterns are mostly hexanets with some spotty circles, implying that layers are largely coherently related, but with some turbostratic stacking. Collective data show that d100 = 5.2, b = 9.1, and d001 = 24–25 Å, assuming monoclinic or pseudomonoclinic symmetry. The composition, as determined by energy dispersive spectral analysis, is (Na0.22K0.07Ca0.06)(Al3.81Mg0.08Fe0.08)(Si7.84 Al0.16)O20(OH)4·3.54H2O, as consistent with the sum of the compositions of pyrophyllite-like and smectite-like units. Water content was determined by DTA/TGA analysis. The powder diffraction patterns have a principal peak with d001 = 24.4 Å. Patterns of air-dried and glycol-saturated brinrobertsite, including Na- and Ca-saturated and untreated samples, were modelled satisfactorily as R1-ordered P/S by the program NEWMOD-for-Windows. The unique composition of brinrobertsite relative to R1 IS, which is ubiquitous in metabentonites, was caused by leaching of alkalis and alkaline-earth elements by hydrothermal fluids associated perhaps with a nearby intrusion, as demonstrated by bulk-chemical analyses of the metabentonite. The crystal structure is modelled as having Al/Si distributions symmetrical by reflection across interlayers. This causes all 2:1 layers to be equivalent in having one tetrahedral sheet with little or no Al, and the other with significant Al substitution, giving rise to alternate high- and low-charge interlayers. Geological evidence suggests that brinrobertsite is a back-reacted product of hydrothermal alteration in the sequence: glass → pyrophyllite → brinrobertsite.

Ænigmatite occurs as a trace constituent of the Ægirine-Riebeckite Granite of the Liruei Complex, Younger Granite Province of Nigeria. It is enriched in Ti and Mg and depleted in Si, Al, and Ca relative to many other ænigmatites. Relative to coexisting ægirine and arfvedsonitic riebeckite it is enriched in Ti and depleted in Fe3+. Conditions required for formation of the mineral appear to have been high Ti concentration in a peralkaline magma of low T and fo2. The composition of the Nigerian ænigmatite confirms that there is only limited miscibility between rhönite and aenigmatite although in certain circumstances the two may have a paragenetic relationship.

The water column chemistry of lake St Eloy (St Eloy-les Mines, Allier, France) was monitored over a period of a year. This is a small stratified lake created by subsidence of an underground coal mine. The results show a permanent stratification and the development of two water bodies with contrasting chemistry. The superficial oxic layer (i.e. the upper 5 m) is of high water quality and the water, not affected by seasonal changes, is suitable as a source of drinking water. In contrast, the deeper layer is permanently anoxic and the waters have a conductivity which is six times greater than in the epilimnion. Due to density difference and the small size of the lake, no turn-over occurs and all elements that diffuse from bottom sediments are strongly concentrated in the hypolimnion. Arsenic concentrations are very low in the epilimnion, but they increase quickly with depth below the oxycline, to reach up to 7 μm below 8 m depth. Different solid phases could control the fate of arsenic in this lake such as gypsum for As(V) in the hypolimnion, mackinawite for As(V) and As(III) in the hypolimnion, and close to the oxycline, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides are possible hosts for both As(III) and As(V).

When gels and glasses of alkali feldspar composition are crystallized hydrothermally below their solidus the crystals present when crystallization is incomplete do not have the same Na:K ratio as the starting material but bear a relation to the starting material analogous to that between crystals and liquids coexisting at the liquidus. This effect has been investigated in the temperature range 700–850 °C at water-vapour pressures between 5000 lb/in.2 and 30000 lb/in.2 Fractionation and normal zoning of crystals may, in principle, occur within fixed bulk compositions held under isothermal, isobaric conditions.

The residual melts that remained after the consolidation of the Jálama batholith crystallized to form a group of intra-granitic pegmatite dykes, which are hosted by its outermost facies (the External Unit), and the most evolved residual melts migrated through fractures to form the Cruz del Rayo field of pegmatite dykes, which are hosted by pre-Ordovician low-grade metasedimentary rocks. The increasing activity of phosphorus as magmatic differentiation took place led to the crystallization of primary phosphates, including members of the triplite–zwieselite and the amblygonite–montebrasite series. A strong albitization of the granitic and pegmatite rocks led to the replacement of the primary assemblage by other phosphates such as alluaudite. The influx of post-magmatic hydrothermal fluids, produced quartz veins, gave rise to the crystallizationof ore minerals and triplite, and altered the granites, aplites and pegmatites, replacing some of the phosphate minerals and feldspars and depositing goyazite, montebrasite and childrenite–eosphorite. The interaction of the residual hydrothermal fluids with those from the surrounding metamorphic rocks during later alteration events resulted in the influx of large quantities of Ca and Mg, and produced phosphate assemblages enriched in those elements. Finally, late goyazite, hydroxylapatite and an unidentified Fe-rich phosphate were formed as a result of supergene alterationby percolating meteoric waters, which added Ca, Sr and other elements into the system, and increased fO2.

A detailed electron microprobe (EMP) and laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) study of zircon from six types of miaskitic and agpaitic alkaline pegmatite from the Larvik Plutonic Complex, Oslo rift valley, Norway, was undertaken to shed light on the pegmatite petrogenesis. Detailed rare earth element (REE) analyses indicate important differences between the zircon from each type of pegmatite. Primary zircon from miaskitic Stavern-, Tvedalen- and Stålaker-type pegmatites has a mean ΣREE = 704 ppm, is depleted in LREE and has a significant positive Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce* = 44–67) and negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.15–0.18). Secondary Tvedalen-type zircon is REE-enriched (ΣREE = 5035 ppm), with a flatter REE pattern, Ce/Ce* = 0.97 and a Eu anomaly similar to primary Tvedalen-type zircon (Eu/Eu* = 0.21). Secondary zircon from agpaitic Langesundsfjord-type pegmatites display a distinctive flat REE pattern characterized by overall REE enrichment (ΣREE = 967), Ce/Ce* = 1.92, and a minor negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.37). Zircon from agpaitic Bratthagen-type pegmatites occurs as both altered primary and secondary phases and is strongly enriched in REE relative to other zircon (ΣREE = 4178 and 8388, respectively). Primary Bratthagen-type zircon has a similar REE pattern to miaskitic zircon, with a steeper HREE profile and smaller Ce and Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.73; Ce/Ce* = 6.22). Secondary Bratthagen-type zircon is strongly enriched in LREE compared to primary zircon, does not display a positive Ce anomaly and has Eu/Eu* = 0.56. The altered primary and secondary Bratthagen-type zircons have elevated Th/UN ratios, suggesting a different melt source for Bratthagen-type agpaitic pegmatites. Zircon from external pegmatites has trace-element signatures similar to Stavern-, Tvedalen- and Staålaker-type primary zircon with Ce/Ce* = 214 and Nb/Ta and Th/U ratios that are similar to those of secondary Langesundsfjord- and Bratthagen-type zircon. It is suggested that the parental melt of the external pegmatites is the same as the miaskitic pegmatites, but that it has undergone alteration by hydrothermal fluids derived from the host basalt, or by post-magmatic F-rich fluids which mobilize Nb and Th. On the basis of texture, morphology and geochemistry, two populations of zircon can be recognized: (1) primary zircon from miaskitic pegmatites; and (2) secondary zircon from post-magmatic, hydrothermal assemblages. The U–Th–Pb isotope analyses indicate that the secondary and altered zircon are depleted in 238U, and enriched in LREE. Interaction of a post-magmatic hydrothermal fluid with an externally derived meteoric fluid is suggested to have influenced the REE signatures, and in particular the Eu and Ce anomalies of the late-stage zircons.
