Högbomite from Reedy Creek, South Australia, is of a composition outside the previously reported range. It contains less Ti and Mg and more Al and total Fe, with a total Fe/(total Fe + Mg) value between 0.69 and 0.72. The högbomite occurs in unusual cordieritesillimanite aggregates containing minor magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, corundum, and hercynite.

The structure of prehnite Ca2Al(AlSi3O10)(OH)2, including H positions, has been determined by a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and neutron powder diffraction on four natural samples. The symmetry of the average structure with Al/Si disordered at the T2 siteis Pncm. However, for four of the crystals studied, numerous violations of the n- and c-glide reflection conditions indicate lower symmetry corresponding to space groups P2cm and P2/n and Al-Si ordered structures, possibly as domains of different symmetries and ordering within a single crystal. Time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction was carried out on a sample from Mali at 293 K and 2 K. The structure was refined in space group Pncm by Rietveld analysis. Although it was not possible to locate the missing H using the 293 K neutron data, these data were used to refine the H position located approximately by single-crystal XRD and to refine Uiso. For the 2 K neutron powder diffraction data, H was located directly by difference-Fourier synthesis and its refined position found to be in close agreement with that obtained by the combined XRD/neutron 293 K dataset.

The thermal decomposition of caledonite has been examined by simultaneous differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry and mass spectrometry. Structural H2O and CO2 are liberated endothermically between 300 and 400°C leaving a residue of lead sulphate, oxysulphate, and Cu(I) and Cu(II) oxides. A series of sharp endothermic peaks between 850 and 950°C correspond to phase transition and melting reactions of the PbO-PbSO4 mixture. The sulphate anion breaks down above 880 °C. Mass spectra of the gaseous decomposition products show SO2, SO, and O2, although SO is an artefact arising from ion fragmentation of the SO2 within the mass spectrometer. The residue at 1060 °C is composed predominantly of 2PbO · PbSO4 and Cu(I) and Cu(II) oxides.

Pyrophanite was found in quartz-rhodochrosite veins in hornstones of Algonkian pyritemanganese ores. Photometric reflectance falls from R0 24 and RE′ 19 at 405 mµ to R0 18 and RE′ 15% at 656 mµ (in air). Vickers microhardness (100 g load) demonstrates directional anisotropy, the average value is 611 kg/mm2. Besides the main constituents, subordinate to trace quantities of Mg, Si, Al, Ca, and Cu were recorded by a spectrographic analysis. Unit-cell dimensions are a = 5·131 and c = 14·27 Å. Electron-microprobe analysis gave MnO 43·3, FeO 3·8, MgO 0·05, TiO2 52·9, SiO2 0·1, total 100·15%. The origin of the Chvaletice pyrophanite was most probably connected with a hydrothermal metamorphism of an Alpine-paragenesis type. The source of elements was older sedimentary, basic volcanic, and metamorphic mineral assemblages.

Manganoan ilvaite forms as an early retrograde metamorphic phase from calcic rhodonite in the polymetamorphosed Pb-Zn sulphide/manganese silicate rocks at Broken Hill and from grossular-andradite in a skarn at Ban Ban. Ilvaite exists as a probable metastable phase into which Mn is apparently strongly partitioned. The manganoan ilvaites analysed contain up to 13·5 % MnO substituting for FeO and this substitution shifts the 020 peak.

Noonkanbahite, ideally BaKNaTi2(Si4O12)O2, is described as a new mineral species. At Liley [Löhley], Eifel Mountains, Germany (the holotype locality), it occurs as sprays of prismatic crystals (up to 8 mm) or single prismatic crystals (up to 4 mm) on walls of cavities in alkaline igneous rocks. At Murun, Siberia, Russia, noonkanbahite forms coarse lamellar crystals up to 0.05 cm × 0.7 cm × 1.5 cm embedded in kalsilite syenite. Noonkanbahite is brittle, H = 6, Dobs. = 3.39(1), Dcalc. = 3.49 g/cm3, has a vitreous lustre and does not fluoresce in ultraviolet light. It has poor cleavage on {010} and {100} and weak parting on {011}. Noonkanbahite is biaxial positive with 2Vobs. = 75(2)°, 2Vcalc. = 72.7(9)°, α 1.730(5), β 1.740(5) and γ 1.765(5), dispersion is medium, r < v. In transmitted plane-polarized light, noonkanbahite is strongly pleochroic, with X colourless, Y yellowish, Z straw-yellow; X = a, Y = b, Z = c. Noonkanbahite is orthorhombic, space group Imma, a = 8.0884(4), b = 10.4970(5), c = 13.9372(6) Å, V = 1183.3(1) Å3, Z = 4. The strongest ten X-ray diffraction lines in the powder pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 2.907(100)(222), 8.353(50)(001), 3.196(50)(220), 2.097(50)(242), 2.241(40)(215), 2.179(40)(035), 3.377(30)(031), 2.694(30)(015), 2.304(30)(233), and 1.564(30)(064). Electron microprobe analysis gives SiO2 37.82, TiO2 15.54, ZrO2 0.42, Nb2O5 3.18, Al2O3 0.17, Fe2O3 (recalculated from FeO) 5.63, MnO 0.32, MgO 0.53, BaO 20.60, CaO 1.36, K2O 5.32, Na2O 6.14, F 0.78, H2O 0.58, sum 98.39 wt.%, (H2O determined by SIMS). The formula unit, calculated on the basis of 14 anions (O+OH+F), is (Ba0.85K0.13)Σ0.98(K0.59Na0.26Ca0.15)Σ1.00Na(Ti1.23Fe0.453+Nb0.15Mg0.08Mn0.03Zr0.02Al0.01)Σ1.97 (Si3.99Al0.01O12)(O1.33OH0.41F0.26)Σ2.00, Z = 4.

The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 2.8% for 970 unique (F0 > 4σF) reflections collected on a Bruker single-crystal P4 diffractometer with a CCD detector and MoKα X-radiation. The crystal structure of noonkanbahite is isostructural with that of batisite, ideally BaNa2Ti2(Si4O12)O2, and scherbakovite, ideally K2NaTi2(Si4O12)O(OH). There are two octahedrally coordinated sites, M(1) and M(2), occupied by (Ti1.23Fe0.453+Nb0.15Mg0.08Mn0.03Zr0.02Al0.01), ideally Ti2 a.p.f.u. There are three interstitial A sites, [9]A(1), [8]A(2) and [6]A(3), occupied by Ba, K and Na, respectively. Si tetrahedra and M octahedra form a framework with interstitial cages occupied by Ba, K and Na atoms at the A sites. Noonkanbahite, BaKNaTi2(Si4O12)O2, is a K analogue of batisite, BaNa2Ti2(Si4O12)O2, and a Ba analogue of shcherbakovite, K2NaTi2(Si4O12)O(OH).

Johnsomervilleite, Na10Ca6Mg18(Fe, Mn)25 (PO4)36 has Z = 3, a 15.00 Å, c 42.75 Å and cell volume 8330 Å3 and is a new rhombohedral species occurring in two metamorphic segregation pods in Moine gneiss of kyanite-sillimanite grade. Associated minerals are apatite, jahnsite, graftonite, mineral A, phosphosiderite, rockbridgeite, mitridatite, and vivianite. It is dark brown, brittle, and glassy, H = 4½, D = 3·35 (calc. 3.41) with a perfect basal (?) cleavage. Eight electron probe analyses are given and d spacings for 50 lines. The mineral, which is a Mg-Fe analogue of fillowite, is named after the late Mr J. M. Somerville who presented a specimen of garnet-quartz rock, which contained the new species, to the Royal Scottish Museum.

Arsenopyrite (FeAsS), gudmundite (FeSbS) and the rarer Fe sulfosalts berthierite (FeSb2S4) and garavellite (FeSbBiS4), were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Whereas (Sb,Bi)S3 pyramids are responsible for the Raman spectra of berthierite and garavellite, the spectra of gudmundite and arsenopyrite arise from the stretching and bending modes of (Sb,As)S units. Internal vibrations for berthierite and garavellite occur between 400 and 50 cm–1, and those of the gudmundite and arsenopyrite between 500 and 100 cm–1. The longer bond distances of the SbS3 groups readily explain the lower frequencies for berthierite in comparison with garavellite. Similarly, the greater mass and the longer bond distances of the Sb–S units also explain the lower frequencies observed for gudmundite relative to arsenopyrite.

A third world occurrence of rouxelite, ideally Cu2HgPb22Sb28S64(O,S)2, has been identified from the baryte-pyrite-Fe oxides ore of Monte Arsiccio mine, near Sant’Anna di Stazzema (Apuan Alps, Tuscany, Italy). Rouxelite occurs as mm-sized acicular crystals, black in colour, with bluish-violet iridescence, in vugs of carbonate + baryte + quartz veins embedded in dolostones from the Sant’Olga tunnel. It is associated with Tl-bearing chovanite, sphalerite and valentinite. Its X-ray powder diffraction pattern gives unit-cell parameters a = 43.10(2), b = 4.060(2), c = 37.88(2) Å, β = 117.33(2)°, V = 5889(5) Å3. Electron-microprobe data reveal a complex chemistry, with additional minor elements (wt.%): Tl (0.6–1.7), Ag (0.4–0.6), As (0.2–0.6) and Bi (≤0.05). This indicates a widespread substitution of Hg by Ag, according to Hg + Pb = Ag + Sb and incorporation of Tl, with some Ag, according to 2Pb = Sb + (Tl, Ag). The occurrence of mixed (Hg, Ag) and (Hg, Cu) sites in natural sulfides and sulfosalts is briefly reviewed. The Tl-content of the samples studied is a characteristic fingerprint agreeing with the Tl-rich nature of the mineral assemblage from Monte Arsiccio. Rouxelite therefore constitutes a new example of a Tl-bearing sulfosalt.

Nine ferrohastingsites from the Younger Granites of Northern Nigeria and five from the nepheline-bearing rocks in the Marangudzi complex of Southern Rhodesia have been analysed chemically and their optical properties and unit-cell parameters determined.

All the minerals have compositions that can be expressed by the formula NaCa2(Fe″Mg)4Fe‴Al2Si6O22(OH)2, but the Nigerian minerals differ from those of Marangudzi in their lower alumina contents, generally greater degree of iron enrichment, lower potassium, and more variable fluorine contents. These differences are considered to reflect the differences in composition of their respective parent rocks. The compositional similarities between some hastingsites and barkevikite are commented upon and the pleochroism of barkevikite is briefly discussed.

Refractive indices of the analysed hastingsites have been plotted on the optical curves of Tröger. It is suggested that such curves are of limited use and that variations in unit-cell parameters might be a more useful method of determining the iron contents of hastingsites.

The variation in cell parameters with variation in chemical composition of the analysed minerals is also discussed.

The metamorphic history of the Mesoarchean Amikoq Layered Complex within the Akia terrane of SW Greenland was characterised by electron microprobe mineral data and detailed petrography on 12 representative samples, integrated with zircon U–Pb geochronology and petrology. The complex intruded into a >3004 Ma supracrustal association now consisting of granoblastic metabasites with subordinate quartz-rich gneiss. Supracrustal host rocks contain a relict high-temperature assemblage of orthopyroxene–clinopyroxene (± pigeonite exsolution lamellae, exsolved at ~975–1010°C), which is interpreted to pre-date the Amikoq intrusion. Cumulate to granoblastic-textured rocks of the main Amikoq Layered Complex range modally from leuconorite to melanorite, orthopyroxenite to harzburgite/dunite and rare hornblende melagabbro. Observed mineralogy of main complex noritic lithologies is essentially relict igneous with orthopyroxene–biotite and hornblende–plagioclase thermometers yielding temperatures of ~800–1070°C. An anatectic zircon megacryst from a patchy quartzo–feldspathic leucosome hosted in an orthopyroxene-dominated Amikoq rock reflects local anatexis at peak metamorphic P–T conditions and yields an intrusion minimum age of 3004 ± 9 Ma. Field observations indicate local anatexis of orthopyroxene-dominated lithologies, possibly indicating a post-intrusion peak temperature of >900°C. The last preserved stages of retrogression are recorded in paragneiss plagioclase–garnet, biotite–garnet and host rock ilmenite–magnetite pairs (≤3 kbar and ~380–560°C).

The Amikoq Complex intruded a MORB-like crustal section and the former remained relatively undisturbed in terms of modal mineralogy. Preservation of igneous textures and mineralogy are related to an anhydrous, high-grade metamorphic history that essentially mimics igneous crystallisation conditions, whereas local high-strain zones acted as fluid pathways resulting in hydrous breakdown of igneous minerals. There is no evidence of equilibration of the intrusion at sub-amphibolite-facies conditions.

Pararsenolamprite, the third polymorph of native As, is found at the Mukuno mine, Oita Prefecture, Japan. It is orthorhombic, Pmn21 or P21nm, a = 3.633(2), b = 10.196(2), c= 10.314(2)Å, Z = 18. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are: 5.17 (100) (002), 4.60 (24) (012), 3.259 (58) (013), 2.840 (27) (032), 2.580 (22) (004), 2.299 (23) (024), and 1.794 (26) (105). Electron microprobe analysis gives As 91.89, Sb 7.25, S 0.48, total 99.62 wt.% (mean of 8), and lead to the empirical formula, As0.96Sb0.03S0.01. It is lead grey in colour and opaque with metallic lustre and black streak. It is sectile and brittle with perfect cleavage on [001]. The VHN25 is 66–91 kg/mm2, corresponding to 2–2.5 in Mohs' hardness scale. The measured and calculated densities are 5.88(5) g/cm3 and 6.01 g/cm3, respectively. In reflected plane-polarized light in air, it is white with a slightly greenish blue tint. Anisotoropy is strong, dark brown to dark greenish grey. Bireflectance is distinct; parallel to elongation it is creamy; perpendicular to elongation it is brown, grey and green. Internal reflections are absent. The reflectance spectra are tabulated in the text.

Pararsenolamprite occurs as euhedral crystals in close association with arsenic, stibnite and quartz in a Sb-As-Ag-Au-bearing quartz vein cutting altered Neogene andesite from the Mukuno mine. It forms radial or parallel aggregates of bladed cystals up to 0.8 mm in length.

Grunerite asbestos (var. amosite) from Penge, Transvaal, contains lamellae consisting of multiple-chain I-beams which frequently terminate within the structure. Such terminations may be either coherent or incoherent, the latter involving disturbances of the structure akin to dislocations. These may be of the nature of edge dislocations or of dislocations having both edge and screw components.

Models are presented which have been used to elucidate the structural disturbances associated with the termination and side-stepping of multiple-chain lamellae. Odd-multiple-chains are shown to be of particular significance in giving rise to dislocations with a screw component along the c-axis.

The new minerals were found together in oxidized ores at the Bambolla mine, Moctezuma, Sonora. Both occur with various iron oxides, emmonsite, schmitterite, and kuranakhite. Cuzticite, Fe2TeO6 · 3H2O, is yellowish, H = 3, G = 3.9, occurring as crusts with a scaly structure. No single crystals were found, but X-ray powder data indicate a hexagonal cell a = 5.045, c = 14.63 Å. Strongest lines are 3.256 (10), 2.518 (7), 4.871 (4), 2.239 (3), and 1.564 (3).

Eztlite, Fe6Pb2(TeO3)3TeO6(OH)10 · nH2O, is blood red, as paper-thin sparkling crusts, H = 3, G = 4.5. A possible cell found by the Ito method is monoclinic a = 6.58, b = 9.68, c = 20.52Å, β = 90° 15′; strongest lines are 3.426 (10), 3.289 (10), 4.037 (9), 3.239 (9), and 2.445 (7B).

Both minerals and their names have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names, IMA.

Germanium abundances, determined by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, are presented for phenocrysts and glass matrices from a metaluminous trachyte and four peralkaline rhyolites from the Greater Olkaria Volcanic Complex, Kenya Rift Valley, Africa. Abundances (in ppm) are: sanidine 0.45–0.61; fayalite 4.8–11.7; hedenbergite 5.1–9.0; titanomagnetite 2.7; ilmenite 0.48; amphibole 8.3–8.9; biotite 7.0; chevkinite-(Ce) 309; trachyte glass 3.0; rhyolitic glasses 2.3–3.9. These values are generally greater than those recorded for silicic rocks in the literature, whilst the chevkinite-(Ce) value is the largest yet found in a magmatic mineral. Apparent partition coefficients range from 0.15–0.26 in sanidine to 124 in chevkinite-(Ce). Those for fayalite and hedenbergite increase with whole-rock peralkalinity and Fe content. The possibility of a role for accessory phases in influencing Ge distribution in rock-forming minerals is also raised.

Granular aggregates of fine-grained graftonite (Fe,Mn,Ca)3(PO4)2 and intergrown wolfeite (Fe,Mn)2(PO4)(OH) occur in amphibolite-facies metamorphosed iron formations associated with the Gamsberg Zn-Pb deposit, South Africa. To date, these minerals were believed to have limited parageneses, being essentially restricted to granitic pegmatites and iron meteorites. This paper is the first report of the occurrence of graftonite and wolfeite in a regionally metamorphosed, iron formation-hosted setting. The aggregates are found together with Mn- and Pb-rich apatite and calcian pyromorphite in a pristine unit of almost pure chemical precipitates, the origin of which is intimately linked to the base-metal mineralizing process. Evidence from Gamsberg supports previous studies conducted on pegmatite-hosted graftonites that a simple host rock mineralogy and geochemical prerequisites, such as high activities of Fe, Mn, Ca and a deficiency in F, exert a dominant control on the stabilization of these minerals. However, in a marine sedimentary environment, significant concentrations of phosphorus have to be precipitated to prevent stabilization of all the phosphorus as fluorapatite. The paucity of graftonite in such settings suggests that the combination of these requirements is only rarely achieved.

The new mineral alwilkinsite-(Y) (IMA2015-097), Y(H2O)7[(UO2)3(SO4)2O(OH)3]·7H2O, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase.The mineral is slightly flexible before brittle failure with splintery fracture and perfect cleavage parallel to [010], has Mohs hardness of ∼2–2½, exhibits dull greenish-grey fluorescence and has a calculated density of 3.371 g cm–3. Alwilkinsite-(Y) occursas yellowish-green needles, elongate on [010], with domatic terminations and exhibits the forms {102}, {301} and {124}. It is optically biaxial (+) with α = 1.573(1), β = 1.581(1), γ = 1.601(1) (white light), the measured 2V is 65.3(1)°, the dispersion is r<v (weak), the optical orientation is X = c, Y = a, Z = b and there is no pleochroism. Electron microprobe analyses yielded the empirical formula (Y0.66Dy0.08Gd0.06Er0.05Nd0.03Yb0.03Sm0.02Ce0.01)∑0.94(H2O)7[(UO2)3(S1.01O4)2O(OH)3]·7H2O.The eight strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 9.88(100)(101,002), 7.47(13)(102), 5.621(17)(103,201), 4.483(18)(104), 3.886(14)(130,222), 3.322(46)(multiple), 3.223(13)(multiple) and 3.145(16)(034). Alwilkinsite-(Y) is orthorhombic,P212121, a = 11.6194(5), b = 12.4250(6), c = 19.4495(14) Å, V = 2807.9(3) Å3 and Z = 4. The structure of alwilkinsite-(Y) (R1 = 0.042 for 4244 Fo > 4σF)contains edge-sharing chains of uranyl bipyramids with outlying sulfate tetrahedra that are similar to the chain linkages within the uranyl sulfate sheets of the zippeite structure. Short segments of the uranyl sulfate chains in the alwilkinsite-(Y) structure have the same topology as portionsof the uranyl sulfate linkages in uranopilite. Alwilkinsite-(Y) is named for Alan (Al) J. Wilkins, MD (born 1955), the discoverer of the mineral.

An examination has been carried out of ten specimens assigned to the group. These include metatype specimens of neotocite (Gestrikland, Sweden) and penwithite (Wheal Owles, Penwith, Cornwall) and topo-type specimens of stratopeïte (Pajsberg, Sweden), klipsteinite (Herborn, Dillenberg, Germany), and opsimose (specimen labelled klipsteinite, but from Klapperud, Dalecarlia, Sweden). The investigation arose out of the recent find of neotocite at the Geevor mine, Cornwall, close to the site of the type locality for penwithite.

In the investigation klipsteinite has been confirmed as a mixture (Fisher, 188o), the dominant mineral in the mixture giving an X-ray pattern close to birnessite. Chemical analyses, refractive indices, and specific gravity determinations are given for the remainder in the miniprint section, p. M27 (Table I). They show that the group can be represented fairly closely by the formula (Mn, Fe)SiO3.H2O, but with significant carbonate present in each sample. CO2 has not generally been reported before in these minerals and the water content is lower than previous analyses, as a result of the precautions taken in drying the material before analysis (over magnesium perchlorate at room temperature).

The specimens examined are all dark brown or black in appearance (often darkening on exposure to light) with a vitreous lustre and conchoidal fracture. The group should be regarded as poorly crystalline since all the specimens gave similar X-ray powder patterns with three very broad and diffuse lines around 3·5, 2·6, and 1·6 Å respectively (see Whelan and Goldich, 1961). After heating to 1000 °C all form braunite, with the exception of stratopeite, which gave an X-ray powder pattern closer to pyroxmangite. Hausmannite or spinel were also found associated with braunite in several specimens.

Of the names used in the group, opsimose (Beudant, 1832) was the first recorded, but in this and the subsequent work of Bahr (1850), it was associated with material much richer in manganese. Wittingite and neotocite (Nordenskiöld, 1849) were -named separately on account of the higher iron content of neotocite. Stratopeïte (Igelström, 1851) is a magnesium-bearing variety, while penwithite (Collins, 1878, 1879) was thought to have a different manganese valency state from wittingite.

In view of its current widespread usage and the fact that neotocite was originally named for an iron-bearing manganese silicate it is proposed that neotocite be defined as the group of poorly crystalline manganese silicates with formulae close to (Mn, Fe)SiO3.H2O and Mn > Fe. With Fe > Mn the series grades into hisingerite. Limited substitution of MgO, Al2O3, and CO2 should be acceptable. Finally it has been proposed that the other names be discarded. The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names, IMA, has approved these proposals, but came to no firm conclusion as to whether the group name should be spelt ‘neotocite’ or as in the original description ‘neotokite’. Accordingly either are permissible.
