We describe similar assemblages of minerals found in two placers in Russia, both probably derived from an ophiolitic source. The first is located along the River Rudnaya in the western Sayan province, Krasnoyarskiy kray, and the second pertains to the Miass placer zone, Chelyabinsk oblast, in the southern Urals. The platinum-group element (PGE) mineralization in both cases is mostly (at least 80%) represented by alloy minerals in the system Ru–Os–Ir, in the order of occurrence osmium, ruthenium and iridium. The remainder consists of Pt–Fe alloys and species of PGE sulfides, arsenides, sulfarsenides, etc. The associated olivine and amphiboles are supermagnesian, and the chromian spinel has a high Cr# value. The observed enrichment in Ru, typical of an ophiolitic source, may be due to high-temperature hydrothermal equilibration and mobilization in the ophiolite, as is the enrichment in Mg and Cr. Low-temperature replacement of the alloys led to the development of laurite, sulfoarsenides and arsenides. Some placer grains in both suites reveal unusual phases of sulfo-arsenoantimonides of Ir–Rh, e.g. the unnamed species (Rh,Ir)SbS and (Cu,Ni)1+x(Ir,Rh)1–xSb, where x = 0.2, and rhodian tolovkite, (Ir,Rh)SbS. Two series of natural solid-solutions appear to occur in the tolovkite-type phases. Among the oddities in the Rudnaya suite are globules of micrometric PGE sulfides, crystallites of platinum-group minerals, amphibole, and chalcopyrite bearing skeletal micrometric monosulfide-like compounds (Cu,Pt,Rh)S and (Pd,Cu)S1–x. Pockets of fluxed evolved melt seem to have persisted well below the solidus of the host Pt3Fe-type alloy.

A method of base metal exploration in sedimentary rocks which depends on detecting anomalous amounts of the light hydrocarbon gas methane in the host rocks has been applied in a number of orientation surveys in the British Isles and in Europe. The results of these studies are described, and the limitations of the method discussed. It is suggested that the principal difficulty lies in the extraction technique which is based on heating, and alternative methods are proposed. The preliminary results from these new methods are discussed and compared with those from the original study. A number of the samples analysed by the new methods are calcites of differing diagenetic origins. It is postulated that the differences in methane found in these samples may give a clue to the organic geochemistry of the rocks at the time when the calcites were deposited.

Blueschist-facies metabasite rocks from the Tavşanlı Zone of northwest Turkey have been found to contain an abundance of lawsonite displaying oscillatory zoning. Lawsonite normally adheres to the ideal composition of CaAl2[Si2O7](OH)2.H2O. In two samples from the Tavşanlı Zone, Al3+-Cr3+ substitution has occurred. The Cr3+ was probably present in the protolith as magmatic chromite, became incorporated into lawsonite during subduction, and is a metamorphic feature resulting from quantities of Cr in the protolith and local fluid conditions.

The crystal structure of the mineral mertieite-II from the Kaarreoja River, Inari commune, Finnish Lapland, Finland, was refined to R1 = 0.0222 (I) and 0.0228 (II) on the basis of X-ray diffraction data collected from two single crystals. The mineral is trigonal, space group is $R\bar 3c$. The unit-cell parameters for the two crystals are determined as: a = 7.5172(3), c = 43.037(2) Å, V = 2106.1(2) Å3 (I); a = 7.5135(4), c = 43.003(3) Å, V = 2102.4(3) Å3 (II) with Z = 12. The occupancies of the Sb and As position in the structure were refined according to the Sb:As ratio of each crystal. The position As1 (Wyckoff 6b) is completely filled by As atoms. Any excess of As is distributed together with Sb on structural position M1 (Wyckoff 12c). The crystal chemical formulae are defined as Pd8Sb1.5(Sb0.94As0.06)As0.5 (crystal I) and Pd8Sb1.5(Sb0.88As0.12)As0.5 (crystal II). As → Sb substitution of up to 4.50 wt% of As does not affect the main structural topology of mertieite-II. Mertieite-II, Pd8Sb2.5As0.5 and synthetic Pd8Sb3 are isotypic compounds. The crystal structures of synthetic Pd8Sb3 and natural mertieite-II, Pd8Sb2.5As0.5, can be derived from the hexagonal close packing by filling additional layers between the close-packed 36 layers. The structure consists of Sb and (Sb,As) triangular 36, Pd triangular 36 and Pd pentagonal-triangular 5.33 layers. Stacking of Sb-, (Sb,As)- and Pd-nets along the z axis caused extension of the unit cell. It contains a total of 36 layers: six Sb1-nets, six (M1,As1)-nets, 12 Pd1-nets and 12 (Pd1,Pd3,Pd4)-nets.

We report the crystal structures of four synthetic members of the variscite group (space group type Pbca) and of bonacinaite, the first naturally occurring scandium arsenate member of the metavariscite group. All structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray intensity data. The following members were all synthesised under either mild hydrothermal conditions or by wet-chemical methods (<90°C). CrAsO4⋅2H2O (deep green): a = 8.894(2), b = 9.946(2), c = 10.206(2) Å and V = 902.8(3) Å3; R1 = 2.14%. Tl3+PO4⋅2H2O (colourless): a = 10.2848(7), b = 8.8578(6), c = 10.3637(7) Å and V = 944.14(11) Å3 (data at –173°C); R1 = 2.56%. MnSeO4⋅2H2O (pale pink): a = 10.441(2), b = 9.2410(18), c = 10.552(2) Å and V = 1018.1(3) Å3; R1 = 2.19%. A different method of preparation of MnSeO4⋅2H2O yielded crystals with very similar unit-cell parameters, a = 10.4353(5), b = 9.2420(5) and c = 10.5349(6) Å; R1 = 2.25%. CdSeO4⋅2H2O (colourless) has a = 10.481(1), b = 9.416(1), c = 10.755(1) Å and V = 1061.4(2) Å3; R1 = 1.53%. The thermal behaviour of the two selenate members was studied by a combination of DSC and TG, supplemented by PXRD. Bonacinaite (IMA2018-056), metavariscite-type natural (Sc,Al)(As,P)O4⋅2H2O (ideally ScAsO4⋅2H2O), crystallises in the space group P21/n, with a = 5.533(1), b = 10.409(2), c = 9.036(2) Å, β = 91.94(3)° and V = 520.11(18) Å3; R1 = 3.66%. The structural formula, supported by chemical analysis, is (Sc0.807(1)Al0.193)(As0.767(7)P0.233)O4⋅2H2O. All structures are based on frameworks built by corner-sharing of TO4 tetrahedra (T = P5+, As5+ or Se6+) with MO4(H2O)2 (M = Mn2+, Cd2+, Cr3+, Sc3+ or Tl3+) octahedra. The flexible frameworks are reinforced by partly bifurcated, strong to weak hydrogen bonds.

The crystal chemistry of all known synthetic and natural members of the variscite and metavariscite groups is discussed and compared, and the relative stabilities are evaluated. With the aid of the COMPSTRU program (Bilbao Crystallographic Server), a quantitative comparison of the crystal structures in both groups is given. Calculations of the structural and topological complexity reveal that the metavariscite structure type is structurally and topologically simpler than that of variscite. It is suggested that metavariscite and phosphosiderite are metastable kinetically stabilised phases, in contrast to thermodynamically stable variscite and strengite, respectively. The 3D frameworks of the members of both groups have been shown to be potential electrode materials for rechargeable Li ion batteries.

Orthopyroxene-bearing felsic gneiss occurs as foliation-parallel layers and bands together with aluminous granulite, mafic granulite, and quartzofeldspathic granulite in the Chilka Lake migmatite complex of the Proterozoic Eastern Ghats Belt, India. The rock was classified previously as charnockite which underwent granulite-facies metamorphism. Field and textural features of this rock show evidence of the partial melting of a biotite-bearing greywacke protolith. Orthopyroxene with/without garnet and cordierite were produced with K-feldspar as peritectic phases of incongruent melting of presumed metaluminous sediments. Fluid-inclusion data suggest the presence of high-density CO2-rich fluids during peak metamorphism, which are similar to those found in associated aluminous granulite. Whole-rock major and trace element data show wide variability of the source materials whereas REE distributions show enriched LREE and flat HREE patterns. Zircon grains from representative samples show the presence of inherited cores having spot dates (SHRIMP) in the range c. 1790–3270 Ma. The overgrowth on zircon was formed predominantly during c. 780–730 Ma and sporadically during c. 550–520 Ma. Some neoblastic zircons with c. 780–730 Ma ages are also present. U-rich dark zones surrounding cores appear partially metamictised, but spot ages from this zone vary within c. 1000–900 Ma. The <1000 Ma ages represent metamorphism that mirrors the events in associated aluminous granulite. The sources of metaluminous sediments are speculative as the rock compositions are largely modified under granulite-facies metamorphism and partial melting. Considering the accretionary tectonic setting of the Eastern Ghats Belt during the c. 1000–900 Ma time frame, a greywacke-type protolith for the migmatite complex has been proposed.

A limited amount of careful optical work has been carried out on X three analysed felspars of gabbros belonging to the main layered series of the Skaergaard intrusion, east Greenland (Wager and Deer, 1939). The work was begun with the intention of providing precise optical data to be used in further defining the relationship between composition and optics. The primary precipitate felspar crystals, hitherto thought to be devoid of zoning, were found, however, to possess a zoning which prevents the data being used in this way.

This paper describes a development for the universal stage of the extinction curve method for determining the orientation of the optical indicatrix in biaxial crystals. The extinction curve may be defined as the locus of the poles of the extinction directions when the crystal is rotated between crossed polarizers about an arbitrary but fixed axis perpendicular to the microscope axis.

When two or more extinction curves, or parts of them, are plotted on a stereographic projection, their intersections give the directions of the axes of the indicatrix, of which at least two are directly accessible. The main application of this new orthoscopic method is to provide a means of refining the orientation of the indicatrix obtained by this or any other method. The accuracy that can be obtained for minerals of low birefringence such as the felspars is considerably greater than with the conventional orthoscopic method.

A complete account is given of the details of the plotting procedure.

The glassy residua from an alkali olivine-basalt and a nephelinebasanite are respectively alkali trachytic and phonolitic in composition and contrast strongly with the compositions of the host rocks. The analysis of the glass from the alkali olivine-basalt reveals appreciable normative corundum, which is considered a consequence of the crystallization of excessive diopsidic clinopyroxene. This results in a deficiency in lime relative to alumina during the crystallization of much of the plagioclase. A consideration of the compositions of the glasses and the salic differentiates from alkaline basic intrusions indicates that the development of either trachyte or phonolite depends on differing degrees of undersaturation of the parental basic magmas.

A hydrated barium pyrochlore (pandaite) has been found at Mrima Hill (Kenya) in a residuum consisting mainly of goethite/limonite and gorceixite. The pandaite occurs as pale yellow or white octahedral crystals, which have a micro-crystalline interior. It is isotropic, the refractive index varies from 2·07 to 2·11. The calculated specific gravity is 4·07, and the unit cell dimension is 10·59 Å. After deduction of impurities the following formula was obtained (Na0·03 K0·02 Mg0·05 Ca0·09 Ba0·36 Ln0·05 Th0·01 Pb0·004) (Ti0·21 Nb1·78 Ta0·01) (H2O)1·64 O5·52.

Comparison of the calculated formula, essentially A0·614B2 (H2O)1·64 O5·52 with the ideal pyrochlore formula A2B2O6F indicates important deficiencies in the structure. Differential thermal analysis shows a large endothermic peak at 340° C and moderate exothermic peaks at 480 and 780° C. In its physical, chemical, X-ray, and thermal properties the Mrima pandaite is similar to pandaites described from other localities.

The nature of the alteration of primary pyrochlore to pandaite has been studied using an electron probe.

Sections perpendicular to [001] of ion-thinned specimens of amosite (fibrous grunerite) from Penge, Transvaal and anthophyllite from Paakila, Finland and Söndeled, Norway, have been examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Observations on the nature of grain boundaries and alteration are compared with those of other workers on other fibrous amphiboles. Fibrous crystals grow with their fibre (c) axes approximately parallel to one another but they have considerable rotational disorder about that axis. Grain boundaries are generally irregular in shape and only follow low-index planes for short sections. In all specimens the amphibole has undergone some alteration to sheet silicates along grain boundaries, fractures, cleavages, and multiple-chain lamellae. Anthophyllite alteration products are talc, serpentine and chlorite, and amosite alteration products approximate to iron analogues of talc and serpentine. Talc layers are generally planar and their orientation is strongly controlled by the amphibole structure, whereas serpentine and chlorite layers often curve and their orientations are less frequently related to that of the amphibole. Comparison of specimens which appear finely fibrous in hand specimen with those which appear coarser, acicular or massive suggests that the nature of fibres produced by crushing is mainly controlled by the grain boundaries in the former type, but other factors such as fractures, cleavages, and defects are more important for the latter types.

The new mineral species ralphcannonite, AgZn2TlAs2S6, was discovered in the Lengenbach quarry, Binn Valley, Wallis, Switzerland. It occurs as metallic black equant, isometric to prismatic crystals, up to 50 μm, associated with dufrénoysite, hatchite, realgar and baryte. Minimum and maximum reflectance data for COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 471.1: 25.8/27.1; 548.3: 25.2/26.6; 586.6: 24.6/25.8; 652.3: 23.9/24.8. Electron microprobe analyses give (wt.%): Cu 2.01(6), Ag 8.50(16), Zn 10.94(20), Fe 3.25(8), Hg 7.92(12), Tl 24.58(26), As 18.36(19), Sb 0.17(4), S 24.03(21), total 99.76(71). On the basis of 12 atoms per formula unit, the chemical formula of ralphcannonite is Ag0.63(2)Cu0.25(2)Zn1.35(5)Fe0.47(1)Hg0.32(2)Tl0.97(3)[As1.97(6)Sb0.01(1)]Σ1.98(5)S6.03(8). The new mineral is tetragonal, space group I42m, with a = 9.861 (2), c = 11.125(3) Å, V = 1081.8(4) Å3, Z = 4. The main diffraction lines of the calculated powder diagram are [d (in Å), intensity, hkl]: 4.100, 85, 211; 3.471, 40, 103; 2.954, 100, 222; 2.465, 24, 400; 2.460, 39, 303. The crystal structure of ralphcannonite has been refined by X-ray single-crystal data to a final R1 = 0.030, on the basis of 140 observed reflections [Fo > 4σ(Fo)]. It shows a three dimensional framework of (Ag,Zn)-centred tetrahedra (1 M1 + 2 M2), with channels parallel to [001] hosting TlS6 and (As,Sb)S3 disymmetric polyhedra. Ralphcannonite is derived from its isotype routhierite M1CuM2Hg2TlAs2S6 through the double heterovalent substitution M1Cu+ + M2Hg2+ → M1Zn2+ + M2Ag+. This substitution obeys a steric constraint, with Ag+, the largest cation relative to Zn2+ and Cu+, entering the largest M2 site, as observed in arsiccioite. The ideal crystal-chemical formula of ralphcannonite is M1ZnM2(Zn0.5Ag0.5)2TlAs2S6.

The 590±2 Ma Ben Vuirich Granite was intruded into late Proterozoic Dalradian rocks prior to the Grampian orogeny, during which it was affected by upper amphibolite facies regional metamorphism. Spotted cordierite and andalusite (chiastolite) hornfelses at the granite margin were altered to kyanite-and garnet-bearing assemblages during regional metamorphism. From the inferred mineralogy of the hornfels, together with the normative Qz–Ab–Or values of the granite and the application of a simple cooling model, we conclude that the country rocks immediately adjacent to the granite were hornfelsed at T = ∼600°C and P ≤ 2 kbar.

The hornfelsed rocks were subsequently metamorphosed during the regional D2 event to form an equilibrium mineral assemblage of muscovite + biotite + garnet + plagioclase + quartz + kyanite (after chiastolite). Garnet which grew during this event shows unusual reversed chemical zoning, with Ca increasing systematically from core to rim as Fe, Mg and Mn decrease. A study of element partitioning between coexisting phases in equilibrium (including zoned garnets), and use of an internally consistent thermodynamic dataset, suggest that isothermal (T = 577±42°C) compression (from P = 6.2±1.6 kbar to 9.0±1.9 kbar) occurred during crustal thickening. K-feldspar-plagioclase-quartz veinlets found in the hornfels close the granite contact are demonstrated to be of igneous origin.

Late Cenozoic basalts of the Bazman volcanic field, Makran volcanic arc of southern Iran, contain two types of plagioclase feldspar phenocrysts with significant textural and compositional differences. The most common type is rather homogeneous with only weak zoning and maximum An content of 83 mol.%. The less common type of phenocryst exhibits complex zoning and, other than rims, is close in composition and similar in texture to those of associated andesites. This type of plagioclase phenocryst is characterized by an engulfed core with oscillatory zoning, which is overgrown by sieve-textured, moderately zoned mantle, and a relatively narrow rim. In both rock types, the An content of the core is between 40 and 63 mol.% with abrupt fluctuations. No significant correlation between An content and MgO, FeO, SrO and BaO is apparent in the core of phenocrysts in basalts. Anorthite content of the core of phenocrysts in andesites inversely correlates with SrO and BaO. The mantle of plagioclase phenocrysts in both rock types is characterized by sharp increases of An (up to 41 mol.%), MgO, and FeO, in the contact with the core. Anorthite correlates positively with MgO and FeO in the mantle, but correlation between An and SrO and BaO is not evident. It is assumed that plagioclase phenocrysts originally crystallizing from the host andesitic magma were interrupted by mixing with a hotter, juvenile basaltic magma. The resulting changes in temperature, composition, and H2O content of the surrounding melt caused compositional zonation, and the development of resorption in the cores and sieve texture in the mantles. As the An contents of the rims of the phenocrysts resemble the average An content of the groundmass plagioclases in both rock types, it is thought that the two involved magmas gained their independent physical identity before the formation of compositionally-distinct rims of plagioclase phenocrysts.

A new sodium aluminium sulphate phosphate has been named peisleyite. It has the ideal formula Na3Al16(SO4)2(PO4)10(OH)17 · 20H2O. It occurs as fine-grained, compact, brittle, white material on dumps at Tom's Phosphate Quarry, near Kapunda, South Australia. Strongest X-ray diffraction lines are 12.63 Å (100) 010, 7.82(35) 11, 5.41(35) 004, 7.59(30) 111. Unit cell parameters are a 13.31 ± 0.006, b 12.62 ± 0.006, c 23.15 ± 0.01 Å, β 110.0°±0.03°, Z = 2.

Plimerite, ideally Zn (PO4)3(OH)5, is a new mineral from the Block 14 Opencut, Broken Hill, New SouthWales. It occurs as pale-green to dark-olive-green, almost black, acicular to prismatic and bladed crystals up to 0.5 mm long and as hemispherical aggregates of radiating acicular crystals up to 3 mm across. Crystals are elongated along [001] and the principal form observed is {100} with minor {010} and {001}. The mineral is associated with hinsdalite-plumbogummite, pyromorphite, libethenite, brochantite, malachite, tsumebite and strengite. Plimerite is translucent with a pale-greyish-green streak and a vitreous lustre. It shows an excellent cleavage parallel to {100} and {010} and distinct cleavage parallel to {001}. It is brittle, has an uneven fracture, a Mohs’ hardness of 3.5–4, D(meas.) = 3.67(5) g/cm3 and D(calc.) = 3.62 g/cm3 (for the empirical formula). Optically, it is biaxial negative with α = 1.756(5), β = 1.764(4), γ = 1.767(4) and 2V(calc.) of –63º; pleochroism is X pale-greenish-brown, Y pale-brown, Z pale-bluish-green; absorption Z > X > Y; optical orientation XYZ = cab. Plimerite is orthorhombic, space group Bbmm, unit-cell parameters: a = 13.865(3) Å, b = 16.798(3) Å, c = 5.151(10) Å, V = 1187.0(4) Å3 (single-crystal data) and Z = 4. Strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d (A˚ ), I, hkl]: 4.638, (50), (111); 3.388, (50), (041); 3.369, (55), (131); 3.168, (100), (132); 2.753, (60), (115); 2.575, (90), (200); 2.414, (75), (220); 2.400, (50), (221); 1.957, (40), (225). Electron microprobe analysis yielded (wt.%): PbO 0.36, CaO 0.17, ZnO 20.17, MnO 0.02, Fe2O3 29.82, FeO 2.98, Al2O3 4.48, P2O5 32.37, As2O5 0.09, H2O (calc) 6.84, total 97.30 (Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy). The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 17 oxygens is Ca0.02Pb0.01Zn1.68Al0.60P3.09As0.01O17.00H5.15. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R1 index of 6.41% for 1332 observed reflections from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (Mo-Kα radiation, CCD area detector). The structure of plimerite is isotypic with that of rockbridgeite and is based on face-sharing trimers of (Mϕ6) octahedra which link by sharing edges to form chains, that extend in the b-direction. Chains link to clusters comprising pairs of corner-sharing (Mϕ6) octahedra that link to PO4 tetrahedra forming sheets parallel to (001). The sheets link via octahedra and tetrahedra corners into a heteropolyhedral framework structure. The mineral name honours Professor Ian Plimer for his contributions to the study of the geology of ore deposits.

The new mineral magnesiokoritnigite (IMA 2013-049), ideally Mg(AsO3OH)·H2O, was found at the Torrecillas mine, Salar Grande, Iquique Province, Chile, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase in association with anhydrite, chudobaite, halite, lavendulan, quartz and scorodite. Crystals of magnesiokoritnigite are colourless to pale-pink, thin to thick laths up to 2 mm long. Laths are elongated on [001], flattened on {010} and exhibit the forms {010}, {110}, {10}, {101}, {031} and {01}. The crystals also occur in dense deep-pink intergrowths. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. The mineral has a white streak, Mohs hardness of ∼3, brittle tenacity, conchoidal fracture and one perfect cleavage on {101}. The measured and calculated densities are 2.95(3) and 2.935 g cm– 3, respectively. Optically, magnesiokoritnigite is biaxial (+) with α = 1.579(1), β = 1.586(1) and γ = 1.620(1) (measured in white light). The measured 2V is 50(2)° and the calculated 2V is 50°. Dispersion is r < v, medium. The optical orientation is Y ≈ b; Z ^ c = 36° in obtuse β (note pseudomonoclinic symmetry). The mineral is non-pleochroic. The empirical formula, determined from electron-microprobe analyses, is (Mg0.94Cu0.03Mn0.02Ca0.01)Σ 1.00As0.96O5H3.19. Magnesiokoritnigite is triclinic, P, with a = 7.8702(7), b = 15.8081(6), c = 6.6389(14) Å, α = 90.814(6), β = 96.193(6), γ = 90.094(7)°, V = 821.06(19) Å3 and Z = 8. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å (I)(hkl)]: 7.96(100)(020), 4.80(54)(101), 3.791(85)(10,210,1,31), 3.242(56)(02,1,012), 3.157(92)(21,30,230), 3.021(61)(11,141,21,221), 2.798(41)(02,032) and 1.908(43)(multiple). The structure, refined to R1 = 5.74% for 2360 Fo > 4σF reflections, shows magnesiokoritnigite to be isostructural with koritnigite and cobaltkoritnigite.

Many subjective descriptive terms such as ‘smooth’, ‘coarse’ and ‘anisotropic’ are routinely used to convey properties of textures and fabrics, but these aspects of geological objects are not easily quantifiable. The use of directional semivariograms of image greylevels is assessed for this purpose. These quantify anisotropy of ‘coarseness/fineness’ by using semivariogram ranges, and ‘roughness/smoothness’ by using semivariogram sill values. These can be summarized by ellipses derived from semivariogram ranges and directions. The method will find applications in analysis of rock thin sections as well as analysis of surface texture of grains and microfossils.

Unlike planktonic systems, reaction rates in biofilms are often limited by mass transport, which controls the rate of supply of contaminants into the biofilm matrix. To help understand this phenomenon, we investigated the potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to spatially quantify copper transport and fate in biofilms. For this initial study we utilized an artificial biofilm composed of a 50:50 mix of bacteria and agar. MRI successfully mapped Cu2+ uptake into the artificial biofilm by mapping T2 relaxation rates. A calibration protocol was used to convert T2 values into actual copper concentrations. Immobilization rates in the artificial biofilm were slow compared to the rapid equilibration of planktonic systems. Even after 36 h, the copper front had migrated only 3 mm into the artificial biofilm and at this distance from the copper source, concentrations were very low. This slow equilibration is a result of (1) the time it takes copper to diffuse over such distances and (2) the adsorption of copper onto cell surfaces, which further impedes copper diffusion. The success of this trial run indicates MRI could be used to quantitatively map heavy metal transport and immobilization in natural biofilms.
