We recall several categories of graphs which are useful for describing homotopy-coherent versions of generalised operads (e.g. cyclic operads, modular operads, properads, and so on), and give new, uniform definitions for their morphisms. This allows for straightforward comparisons, and we use this to show that certain free-forgetful adjunctions between categories of generalised operads can be realised at the level of presheaves. This includes adjunctions between operads and cyclic operads, between dioperads and augmented cyclic operads, and between wheeled properads and modular operads.

This paper gives an algebraic conjecture which is shown to be equivalent to Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture for closed, orientable 3-manifolds. It generalizes the Stallings–Jaco theorem which established a similar result for the Poincaré Conjecture. The paper also gives two other algebraic conjectures; one is equivalent to the finite fundamental group case of the Geometrization Conjecture and the other is equivalent to the union of the Geometrization Conjecture and Thurston's Virtual Bundle Conjecture.

All topological spaces considered will be completely regular Hausdorff spaces. The word space will be used to refer to such a topological space.

1. Introduction. A considerable amount of attention has been paid to the problem of determining the conditions which decide whether a liquid heated from below is stable or unstable. The motion consequent upon the disturbance of an unstable ideal gas does not, however, seem to have been treated so far, and this problem forms the subject of the present paper. Heat conduction and viscosity are at first neglected, and we are therefore dealing with the small motions of a gas slightly disturbed from a position of equilibrium under the influence of gravity. The condition for the stability of such a gas is well known, namely, the temperature gradient must be less than the adiabatic gradient. Furthermore, it is known that there is a sharp distinction between slow large-scale (meteorological) and rapidly varying small-scale (acoustical) phenomena. The present paper confirms these points and derives the time scale of meteorological phenomena. Heat conduction and viscosity are then shown to set a lower limit to the dimensions of such disturbances, while the effect of the earth's rotation is shown to be negligible.

Let X be an algebraic (complete) variety over a fixed algebraically closed field k. To every Cartier divisor D on X, we can associate the graded k-algebra . As is known, for a semi-ample divisor D, R(X, D) is a finitely generated k-algebra (see [21] or [9]), while this property is no longer true for arbitrary nef and big divisors (see [21]).

We analyse the Gottlieb groups of function spaces. Our results lead to explicit decompositions of the Gottlieb groups of many function spaces map(X, Y)—including the (iterated) free loop space of Y—directly in terms of the Gottlieb groups of Y. More generally, we give explicit decompositions of the generalised Gottlieb groups of map(X, Y) directly in terms of generalised Gottlieb groups of Y. Particular cases of our results relate to the torus homotopy groups of Fox. We draw some consequences for the classification of T-spaces and G-spaces. For X, Y finite and Y simply connected, we give a formula for the ranks of the Gottlieb groups of map(X, Y) in terms of the Betti numbers of X and the ranks of the Gottlieb groups of Y. Under these hypotheses, the Gottlieb groups of map(X, Y) are finite groups in all but finitely many degrees.

The goodness of fit of hypothetical discriminant functions has been discussed by Bartlett(1), Kshirsagar(2, 3), Radcliffe(4) and Williams (5–8). The associated problem of obtaining confidence intervals for the coefficients of a single discriminant function or canonical variable has been dealt with by Bartlett (1).

Let P be a fixed set of primes, the category of all groups and group-homomorphisms, and the full subcategory of nilpotent groups. In [9], an idempotent functor called P-localization, was defined so as to extend the ℤ-module-theoretic localization of abelian groups. There are two well-known extensions of e to , namely, Bousfield's P-localization [2], [4], denoted by EZP, and Ribenboim's P-localization [13], usually denoted by ( )P. Ribenboim's P-localization is the maximal extension among localizations extending e to in that it maximizes the number of groups in its image [7]. The localized groups obtained after applying Ribenboim's P-localization are precisely the P-local groups, that is, the groups having unique nth-root for every n whichis co-prime to P, [13]. Being maximal is equivalent to this class of P-localized groups being the saturated class of groups generated by e–equivalences, that is, group homomorphisms between nilpotent groups which become isomorphisms after applying e.

An elementary consequence of the Hahn-Banach theorem is that every Banach space Y is ω*-dense in its second dual Y**, so that every element y ∈ Y** is the w*-limit of a net {ya}α ∈ Λ from Y. There is, of course, a great deal of choice in the selection of such a net, and so one may impose extra conditions on the net related to some special property of the limit point, and then ask for existence. The object of this paper is to present such a result in the context of a unital Banach algebra and its second dual , and then to give two applications to Banach algebra theory. The theorem to be proved is this: if the numerical range W(a) of an element in has non-empty interior then a is the ω*-limit of a net {aa}α ∈ Λ from whose numerical ranges are contained in W(a), while if W(a) has empty interior then the numerical ranges W(aα) are contained in a shrinking set of neighbourhoods of W(a).

Let M be a smooth n-manifold, X be a smooth (2n − 1)-manifold, and g:M → X be a map. It was proved in [6] that g is always homotopic to an immersion. The set of homotopy classes of monomorphisms from TM into g*TX, which is denoted by Sg, may be enumerated either by the method of I. M. James and E. Thomas or by the singularity method of U. Koschorke (see [1] and references therein). When the natural action of π1(XM, g) on Sg is trivial, for example, if X is euclidean, the set Sg is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of regular homotopy classes of immersions homotopic to g (see e.g. [4]).

In this paper, it will be shown how it is possible, using Bernoulli polynomials of the first kind, to derive correction terms for any quadrature approximation in the form of a weighted sum over a finite interval. The terms derived will involve either the difference or the sum of derivatives taken at the ends of the range of integration, and they will be described as being of either Type A or Type B respectively. There will also be some discussion of the uses of such terms.

A strong approximation for randomly indexed U-statistics is derived. The special case when the indices are stopping times based upon the jackknife estimator of the variance is discussed.

The following work arises from the study of a rotating fluid contained in a rectangular vessel whose depth depends on one coordinate only.

1. The elastic stability of a long flat plate when acted on by a shearing force along its edges has been discussed by Southwell and Skan*, and Leggett† has solved the shearing problem when the plate has a small constant curvature. The present paper deals with the elastic stability of a long corrugated plate which is acted on by a shearing force along its generators, the work being applicable to plates with any given number of bays forming the corrugations. It is supposed that the plate is thin and that the depth d of a bay is a small multiple of the semithickness h; little progress has been made without some such assumption as the second, which enables us to reduce the fundamental equations to a soluble form.

Let $(X\ni x,B)$ be an lc surface germ. If $X\ni x$ is klt, we show that there exists a divisor computing the minimal log discrepancy of $(X\ni x,B)$ that is a Kollár component of $X\ni x$ . If $B\not=0$ or $X\ni x$ is not Du Val, we show that any divisor computing the minimal log discrepancy of $(X\ni x,B)$ is a potential lc place of $X\ni x$ . This extends a result of Blum and Kawakita who independently showed that any divisor computing the minimal log discrepancy on a smooth surface is a potential lc place.

In an article on the philosophy of chance, Poincaré[7] showed that the distribution of the stopping position of a needle pivoted about its centre tends to the uniform distribution on the circle as the distribution of the initial push becomes spread out along the real line. This result was formalized by Feller [2] and strengthened by Mardia [6] as follows.

In an earlier paper we studied the impact of equivalences between derived categories of group rings on their cohomology rings. Especially the group of auto-equivalences TrPic(RG) of the derived category of a group ring RG as introduced by Raphaël Rouquier and the author defines an action on the cohomology ring of this group. We study this action with respect to the restriction map, transfer, conjugation and the local structure of the group G.

We identify the support of a tempered distribution by evaluation of a sequence of test functions against the Fourier transform of the distribution. This improves previous results by removing the restriction that the distribution's Fourier transform be in and be of polynomial growth. We use an apparently new technical lemma that implies that certain bounded approximate identities for are also topological approximate identities for elements of the space of Schwartz functions.
