Recent computations of UNil-groups by Connolly, Ranicki and Davis are used to study splittability of homotopy equivalences between 4-dimensional manifolds with infinite dihedral fundamental groups.

Over thirty years ago Wiener and Masani pointed out in the introduction of their celebrated paper [31] that for a general multivariate stationary stochastic process no relation had been given for the prediction-error matrix in terms of the spectrum of the process. In particular it was unknown how to characterize the rank of the process in spectral terms (cf. Masani[12], p. 369, question 1). Despite explicit progress in this connection with certain regular processes, such as the series representations in [11, 19, 22, 32], or the iterative approach of [28, 29], and despite progress in the structure theory of degenerate processes ([8, 10, 14, 15, 26]), a general relation or series expression has remained elusive.

1. One of the most important techniques in the study of non-linear differential systems is the Lyapunov's second method and its extensions. One of the extensions of the method depends upon the fact that the function satisfying a differential inequality can be majorized by the maximal solution of the corresponding differential equation. This method was used extensively by V. Lakshmikantham and others for obtaining results, in a unified way, on stability and boundedness of systems of differential equations.

Several methods have been developed in recent years in the Cavendish Laboratory for the absolute measurement of fast neutron flux. All depend on observing the effects of elastic collisions between neutrons and light nuclei. The methods fall into two categories according as individual recoil nuclei are counted (1, 2), or the total ionization current due to the recoils is measured (3). In order completely to interpret the experimental results, it is necessary to know the cross-section for scattering and the angular distribution of the recoil nuclei. The total number of recoil nuclei and their energy distribution are then determined for a known incident neutron spectrum. For precise neutron flux measurements, recoil protons are invariably studied, as the neutron-proton scattering cross-section has been measured over a wide range of energies (4, 5), and the angular distribution of the recoils is isotropic in the centre of gravity space for neutrons of energy less than about 10 MeV. (6, 7). This makes the reduction of the experimental results particularly simple and certain.

It is well known that if M is a vector bundle over a space Y, and r: X → Y is a map, then there is an ‘induced’ vector bundle r*M over X. It is also known that a vector bundle L over X determines a ‘direct image’ vector bundle r* L over Y provided that r is a finite covering map ((1), § 1).

We investigate the first-order Thom–Boardman singularity sets of the dual mapping for an arbitrary (and then for a generic) smooth hypersurface in the complex projective space ℙn. Our results focus on nonemptiness, connectedness, regular stratifications and numerical invariants for these sets.

A study is made of the waves generated by a magnetic line source placed at the vertex of a wedge of high conductivity and arbitrary angle. The boundary-value problem is reduced to the solution of a difference equation and an exact solution obtained. The method is also applied to the case of dielectric coated wedges where the surface reactance and resistance are arbitrary, and the propagation of surface waves along such surfaces is considered briefly. The forms of the solution for large and small values of the surface impedance are obtained and show complete agreement with the known results available for a right-angled wedge and a plane.

Solving a problem of Erdős(5), I recently proved (4) that for n = 1, 2, …, the hypothesis implies that if the lines in the Euclidean space Ek (k ≥ 2) are distributed into n + 2 disjoint classes Li(i = 1, …,n + 2), then there exists a decomposition of Ek into sets Si such that the intersection of each line of Li with the corresponding set Si is finite. Without assuming any hypothesis other than the axiom of choice, I have also recently proved (3) that if di (i = 1,2,…) is any infinite sequence of mutually non-parallel lines in the plane, then the plane can be decomposed into N0 sets Si such that each line parallel to di intersects the corresponding set 8i in at most a single point.

We construct a pairing on the dual Selmer group over false Tate curve extensions of an elliptic curve with good ordinary reduction at a prime p≥5. This gives a functional equation of the characteristic element which is compatible with the conjectural functional equation of the p-adic L-function. As an application we compute the characteristic elements of those modules – arising naturally in the Iwasawa-theory for elliptic curves over the false Tate curve extension – which have rank 1 over the subgroup of the Galois group fixing the cyclotomic extension of the ground field. We also show that the example of a non-principal reflexive left ideal of the Iwasawa algebra does not rule out the possibility that all torsion Iwasawa-modules are pseudo-isomorphic to the direct sum of quotients of the algebra by principal ideals.

where, as usual, [x] indicates the greatest integer ≤ x. (An equivalent method was introduced somewhat earlier by Wintner (8), but the notation (I) for the above method and the attachment to Ingham's name seem to have become usual following [(1), Appendix IV].) The method (I) is intimately connected with the prime number theorem and the fact that the Riemann zeta-function ζ(s) has no zeros on the line σ = 1. Ingham proved, among other results, that (I) is not comparable with convergence but, nevertheless, for every δ > 0, (I) ⇒ (C, δ) and for every δ, 0 < δ < 1, (C, −δ) ⇒ (I), where the (C, k) are Cesàro means of order k.

This problem was originally attacked by Stokes, and the formula obtained by Stokes for the case of steady motion (given at the end of § 1 below) is now generally used in experimental work. However, this formula throws no light on the way in which the velocity of the sphere approaches its steady value: and the only known discussion of this problem was given by Boggio (his results will be found in § 2 below). Unfortunately, when the specific gravity of the sphere exceeds ⅝ (or the constant σ, defined later, is less than 4) the solution so obtained cannot be converted into numerical results, because the constants α, β become complex numbers; and even when α, β are real, the formula is not very convenient for large values of t (as the velocity approaches the steady value).

We prove the existence of unique limits and establish inequalities for matrix generalizations of the arithmetic–geometric mean of Lagrange and Gauss. For example, for a matrix A = (aij) with positive elements aij, define (contrary to custom) A½ elementwise by [A½]ij = (aij)½. Let A(0) and B(0) be d × d matrices (1 < d < ∞) with all elements positive real numbers. Let A(n + 1) = (A(n) + B(n))/2 and B(n + 1 ) = (d−1A(n)B(n))½. Then all elements of A(n) and B(n) approach a common positive limit L. When A(0) and B(0) are both row-stochastic or both column-stochastic, dL is less than or equal to the arithmetic average of the spectral radii of A(0) and B(0).

The object of this paper is to make Lp estimates for the n-linear form

defined on n-tuples of functions (ø1, …, øn) on the sphere Sn−1 inℝn.

Let Γ be a discrete group. Γ is said to have finite virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) if there exists a finite index torsion-free subgroup Γ' of Γ such that Γ' has finite cohomological dimension over . Examples of such groups include the fundamental group of a finite graph of finite groups, arithmetic groups, mapping class groups and outer automorphism groups of free groups. One of the fundamental problems in topology is to understand the cohomology of these finite vcd-groups.

The experiments described below were under-taken to follow up the observation, made independently by Dr Chadwick and one of us (M. L. O.), that the disintegration by sputtering of a plane cathode in a gas discharge was not uniform but showed a maximum at a small distance from the edge. By running the discharge for many hours under steady conditions it was possible to remove a narrow ring of metal at a distance of about a millimetre from the edge of a thin platinum cathode, the middle portion and the extreme edge remaining whole. A photograph of a cylindrical cathode taken by Kaye shows the same effect very clearly.

The main aim of this paper is to study the role of the assumptions in the following

Theorem 0. Every ideal I of codimension 1 in an F-lattice X is closed†.

For X a Banach lattice this result appears in [11], ii.5·3, corollary 3. The proof carries over to the case where X is an. F-lattice, i.e. a topological linear lattice the topology of which is metrizable and complete, with the help of a result due to Klee ([10], theorem v.5·5; see also [3], theorem 16·6). We first note that the assumption of metric completeness is essential (Example 2). We then extend Theorem 0 to the case of ideals of finite codimension (Theorem 1), and show that non-closed ideals exist whenever X is infinite-dimensional (Corollary 2). Our main result commenting on Theorem 0 is, however, the existence of dense sublattices of arbitrary codimension between 1 and in every infinite-dimensional F-lattice (Theorem 6).

Let M be a C∞ manifold smoothly embedded as a convex hypersurface of Euclidean n-space n. M has constant width if the distance between each pair of parallel supporting hyperplanes in n is equal. This is equivalent to the condition that any chord of M normal to M at one end-point be normal to M at both end-points.

Existence and uniqueness proofs for a boundary-value problem associated with a magnetohydrodynamic Falkner–Skan equation are presented. Relevant special cases of the problem herein considered include the magnetohydrodynamic rear stagnation point flow, and the non-magnetic ‘backward boundary layers’ of Goldstein(2).

In 1930, S. Warschawski [19] showed that H1(D), where D is the open unit disc in ℂ, has the following property: Let be a sequence of functions in H1(D) converging uniformly on compact subsets of D to a function f∈H1(D) and suppose that ‖fn‖1 = |f‖1 = 1 for all n∈ℕ. Then converges to zero. From a Banach space standpoint, this result says that H1(D) has the Kadec–Klee property with respect to uniform convergence on compact subsets of D. Warschawski's result was proved independently by Newman [16] in 1963 (see also [13] for another proof) and extended to more general domains by Hoffman [12], Goldstein and Swaminathan [8] and Godefroy [7]. A uniform version of Warschawski's result and its subsequent extensions was recently obtained by Besbes, Dilworth, Dowling and Lennard [2] (see also [1]). We mention here that these results for H1 spaces also hold for the Hp-spaces for 1 < p < ∞ because these spaces are uniformly convex.

The modern theory of integrable systems rests on two fundamental pillars: the classification of Lax [13] and zero-curvature equations [14, 1, 2]; and algebraic models of the classical calculus of variations [9,5] specialized to the residue calculus in modules of differential forms over rings of matrix pseudo-differential operators [9, 6]. Both these aspects of the theory are by now very well understood for integrable systems in one space dimension.
