A genetical population in which different genotypes have different viabilities will undergo, by selection, changes in its genetical constitution which can be expressed in a simple mathematical form. We here consider a system of m alleles A1, A2, …, Am segregating at one locus, and we assume that the genotype AiAj has viability aij, where aij = aji ≥ 0. We assume discrete, non-overlapping generations and random mating.

The method of matched (or of ‘inner and outer’) asymptotic expansions is reviewed, with particular reference to two general techniques which have been proposed for ‘matching’; that is, for establishing a relationship between the inner and outer expansions, to finite numbers of terms, of an unknown function. It is shown that the first technique, which uses the idea of overlapping of the two expansions, can be difficult and laborious in some applications; while the second, which is the ‘asymptotic matching principle’ in the form stated by Van Dyke(13) can be incorrect. Two different sets of conditions sufficient for the validity of the asymptotic matching principle are then established, on the basis of assumptions about the structure of expressions which approximate to the desired function f(x,∈) for all relevant values of x. Finally, it is noted that in four classes of singular-perturbation problems for which complete and rigorous asymptotic theories exist, uniform approximations to the solutions have a structure which is a particular form of the general one assumed in this paper.

In the theory of the specific heats of gases of diatomic molecules the function

plays a well-known and important part. The rotational specific heat Crot of a diatomic molecule, which is susceptible of representation as a rigid body with two equal principal moments of inertia, without spin about the other principal axis, is given by

where R is the gram-molecular gas-constant and

the pair of equal moments of inertia being equal to A. Whether such a model is or is not an adequate representation is a matter for determination by a detailed study of the structure of the band spectrum, particularly of the nature of the normal electronic and vibrational state. It is known to be applicable to normal molecules of the halogen hydrides, to CO and other molecules which have a normal state of type 1S including (but for a certain special feature) H2.

Multivariate generalizations. In multivariate statistical analysis, common terms such as variances and correlation coefficients have received certain generalizations. Wilks (7) has called the determinant |V|, where V is the matrix of variances and covariances between several variates, a generalized variance; certain ratios of such determinants have been called by Hotelling(5) vector correlation coefficients and vector alienation coefficients. While these determinantal functions have properties which justify to some extent this kind of generalization, it sometimes seems more reasonable to leave any generalized parameters, or corresponding sample statistics, in the form of matrices of elementary quantities. This is stressed by the formal analogy which then often exists between the generalized and the elementary formulae.

The second method of Liapunov is a useful technique for investigating the stability of linear and non-linear ordinary differential equations. It is well known that the second method of Liapunov, when applied to linear differential equations with real constant coefficients, gives rise to sets of necessary and sufficient stability conditions which are alternatives to the well-known Routh-Hurwitz conditions. In this paper a direct proof of the Routh-Hurwitz conditions themselves is given using Liapunov's second method. The new proof is ‘elementary’ in that it depends on the fundamental concept of stability associated with Liapunov's second method, and not on theorems in the complex integral calculus which are required in the usual proofs. A useful by-product of this new proof is a method of determining the coefficients of a linear differential equation with real constant coefficients in terms of its Hurwitz determinants.

It is shown that the internal and external angles at the faces of a polyhedral cone satisfy various bilinear relations. The first two of these are related to the Gauss–Bonnet and Steiner parallel formulae for spherical polytopes, while the third is completely new. However, the proofs are basically combinatorial in nature, rather than differential geometric, as in the more classical treatments. These relations lead to inversion formulae, analogous to Euler-type relations, for certain functions defined on polytopes and polyhedral cones. As a result, various new relations involving quermassintegrals and Grassmann angles are found; there is also an application to lattice polytopes.

1.The study of the numerical transformation of slowly convergent series and sequences permits of a certain unity of approach, since the partial sums of the former may be regarded as members of a slowly convergent sequence, while the differences of the latter may be treated as terms in a slowly convergent series. In the ensuing discussion, no essential distinction between the two problems is made, and methods devised for one relate with equal facility to the other.

We call a point set in a complex K a 0-cell if it contains just one point of K, and a 1-cell if it is an open arc. A set L of 0-cells and 1-cells of K is called a linear graph on K if

(i) no two members of L intersect,

(ii) the union of all the members of L is K,

(iii) each end-point of a 1-cell of L is a 0-cell of L

and (iv) the number of 0-cells and 1-cells of L is finite and not 0.

1. Introduction. Following recent developments in the theory of stochastic processes, a beginning has been made by various authors with the associated problems of sampling and statistical inference as these are concerned with dependent and ordered observations, they are distinct from and usually more difficult than the corresponding problems for independent and unordered observations.

A. M. Sinclair has proved that if is a semisimple Banach algebra then every continuous Jordan derivation from into is a derivation ([12, theorem 3·3]; ‘Jordan derivation’ is denned in Section 6 below). If is a Banach -bimodule one can consider Jordan derivations from into and ask whether Sinclair's theorem is still true. More recent work in this area appears in [1]. Simple examples show that it cannot hold for all modules and all semisimple algebras. However, for more restricted classes of algebras, including C*-algebras one does get a positive result and we develop two approaches. The first depends on symmetric amenability, a development of the theory of amenable Banach algebras which we present here for the first time in Sections 2, 3 and 4. A Banach algebra is symmetrically amenable if it has an approximate diagonal consisting of symmetric tensors. Most, but not all, amenable Banach algebras are symmetrically amenable and one can prove results for symmetric amenability similar to those in [8] for amenability. However, unlike amenability, symmetric amenability does not seem to have a concise homological characterisation. One of our results [Theorem 6·2] is that if is symmetrically amenable then every continuous Jordan derivation into an -bimodule is a derivation. Special techniques enable this result to be extended to other algebras, for example all C*-algebras. This approach to Jordan derivations appears in Section 6.

The propagation of plane waves in a thermo-elastic body placed in a magnetic field has been investigated. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to one of pure thermo-elasticity, provided that the longitudinal elastic wave velocity is suitably increased in the case of infinite electrical conductivity. For finite electrical conductivity and low frequency, however, the thermo-elastic coupling factor is to be increased.

Let A be the set of all ascending finite sequences (with at least one term) of positive integers. Let s, t ∈ A. Write s ⊲ t if there exist m, n, x1, …, xn such that m < n and x1 < … < xn and s is x1, …, xm and t is x2, x3, …, xn. Call a subset S of A a P-block if, for every infinite ascending sequence x1, x2, … of positive integers, there exists an m such that x1, …, xm belongs to S. A quasi-ordered set Q (i.e. a set on which a reflexive and transitive relation ≤ is defined) is better-quasi-ordered if, for every P-block S and every function f:S → Q, there exist s, t ∈ S such that s ⊲ t and f(s) ≤ f(t). It is proved that any set of (finite or infinite) trees is better-quasi-ordered if T1 ≤ T2 means that the tree T1 is homeomorphic to a subtree of the tree T2. This establishes a conjecture of J. B.Kruskal that, if T1, T2, … is an infinite sequence of trees, then there exist i, j such that i < j and Ti ≤ Tj.

In previous papers by Misra(1) and by Born and Misra(2) lattice sums of the type required in discussing the stability of a cubic crystal of the Bravais type in which the forces are central have been calculated. In the investigation of the thermodynamic properties of crystals a more general type of lattice sum occurs, which involves the phases of the waves. In the present paper a method of calculating these sums is developed and tables are computed.

The absolute measurement of neutron flux density by ionization methods is discussed.

The relation Eυ = JυW ρ between the energy Eυ absorbed per unit volume of a solid medium and the ionization Jυ produced in a gas-filled cavity in the medium, the average energy W expended by the ionizing particles in producing a pair of ions in the gas, and ρ the stopping power of the solid relative to the gas for these particles, is critically examined from the point of view of the measurement of the rate of absorption of neutron energy at any point in a hydrogenous medium. The accuracy attainable is assessed, in so far as it depends on our knowledge of the quantities ρ and W.

Let R be a noetherian local ring with maximal ideal m and residue field k. If M is a finitely generated R-module then the local cohomology modules are known to be Artinian. Grothendieck [3], exposé 13, 1·2 made the following conjecture:

If I is an ideal of R and M is a finitely generated R-module, then HomR (R/I, ) is finitely generated.

Such equations have been very widely studied and arise frequently in applications. There is an extensive literature relating to the existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions: the paper of Staude[6] is a comprehensive survey. Our interest is in the number of periodic solutions of such equations.

The model K() presented in this paper is a new inner model of ZFC which can contain measurable cardinals of high order. Like the model L() of [14], from which it is derived, K() is constructed from a sequence of filters such that K() satisfies for each (α, β) ε domain () that (α,β) is a measure of order β on α and the only measures in K() are the measures (α,β). Furthermore K(), like L(), has many of the basic properties of L: the GCH and ⃟ hold and there is a definable well ordering which is on the reals. The model K() is derived from L() by using techniques of Dodd and Jensen [2–5] to build in absoluteness for measurability and related properties.

It is shown that the solution of the Rikitake two-discdynamo system may be described by an orbiting point which, for sufficiently large time, lies arbitrarily close to a limit surface of bounded area. Reversal of the field currents of the dynamo coils are shown to occur in the juxtaposed regions of the two sheets of the limit surface. The two singular points of the system are shown, by Liapounov's direct method, to be unstable foci. An asymptotic theory is developed for the case of small difference in dynamo velocities; the theory is applied to cases of small dissipation in which orbits tend to become nearly periodic with a single oscillation between reversals.

The vertical gradient of temperature needed to produce convection currents in a layer of incompressible liquid has already been investigated in several instances. For a compressible fluid instability cannot arise until the gradient exceeds the adiabatic one; it has been assumed usually that what matters is the excess of the actual gradient over the adiabatic. Thus the excess needed in a compressible fluid is to be found by the same formula as gives the gradient needed for instability in an incompressible fluid. It is desirable, however, to investigate the validity of this assumption.
