The results of self-consistent field calculations with exchange for the ground-state configurations of F−, Fe+16, +14, Al+3, +1 are presented.

In an earlier paper (1) the idea of a c-homeomorphism on a 2-manifold was introduced; it can be described in the following way. Let the 2-manifold M contain an annulus, A, one of the boundary components of which is a simple closed curve c. There is a homeomorphism of A to itself, fixed on the boundary of A, which sends radial arcs onto arcs which spiral once around A (see Fig. 1). This can be extended to

a homeomorphism of M to itself, by the identity on M — A. Intuitively this homeomorphism can be thought of as the process of cutting M along c, twisting one of the now free ends, and then glueing together again. The c-homeomorphism has, in fact, only been defined up to isotopy, but as we shall only be considering homeomorphisms up to isotopy, this is sufficient. It was shown in (1) that any orientation preserving homeomorphism of a closed orientable 2-manifold can be expressed as a product of c-homeomorphisms. In that case, a c-homeomorphism could be associated with any simple closed path on such a manifold, but on a non-orientable 2-manifold a c-homeomorphism can only be associated with a simple closed orientation preserving path. It is this fact that invalidates many of the lemmas of (1) if they are regarded as applying to the non-orientable case. The purpose of this paper is to show that (Theorem 1) c-homeomorphisms do not generate the group of all homeomorphisms of a closed nonorientable 2-manifold, but that if another elementary type of homeomorphism, the Y-homeomorphism, is introduced, then c- and Y-homeomorphisms together do generate this group (Theorem 2). This result leads to a discussion of non-orientable 3-manifolds, to a result analogous to that obtained for orientable 3-manifolds in (1), and to a new proof of the fact that any 3-manifold bounds a 4-manifold. Throughout this paper all manifolds will be considered as possessing an underlying combinatorial structure, all paths will be polygonal with respect to some subdivision of the manifold containing them, and all homeomorphisms and isotopies will be piecewise linear.

When relative motion of a viscous incompressible fluid of constant density and an immersed solid body is started impulsively from rest, the initial motion of the fluid is irrotational, without circulation. This is shown by observation, and may be seen in many of the published photographs of fluid flow. The theoretical proof is exactly the same as that given, for inviscid fluids, in treatises on hydrodynamics; for it may be assumed that the viscous stresses remain finite. The fluid in contact with the solid body is, however, at rest relative to the boundary, whilst the adjacent layer of fluid is slipping past the boundary with a velocity determined from the theory of the velocity potential. There is thus initially a surface of slip, or vortex sheet, in the fluid, coincident with the surface of the solid body. In other words, there is a “boundary layer” of zero thickness. The vorticity in the sheet diffuses from the boundary further into the fluid, and is convected by the stream. The boundary layer grows in thickness. (The same results follow from a consideration of the equations for the vorticity components in a viscous incompressible fluid, or of the equation for the circulation in a circuit moving with the fluid.)

The nature of the turbulent motion in a boundary layer with zero longitudinal pressure gradient has been investigated with the techniques of hot-wire anemometry which have been developed for the study of shear flow in wakes. Measurements have been made of the intensities of the turbulent velocity components, the turbulent shear stresses, the rates of transport of turbulent energy by diffusive movements, the intensities and flattening factors of the down-stream spatial derivatives of the three velocity components, and spectra of the down-stream component of the velocity fluctuation, at traverses through the boundary layer at three stations where the Reynolds numbers (based on the displacement thickness and free stream velocity) were respectively 3630, 4360 and 5080. Over the range of measurement, which did not include the laminar sublayer, the turbulent motion was similar at all three stations, and could be described in terms of universal functions. By considering the turbulent energy balance, it is shown that, except in the outer part of the layer where the turbulence resembles strongly the turbulence in a wake, there is a strong flow of energy directed toward the wall and transported by the action of turbulent pressure gradients. It is concluded that, most probably in contact with the laminar sublayer, there must be a ‘dissipative layer’ within which most of the turbulent energy dissipation takes place, and that the bulk of the eddies are, in a sense, attached to the wall and have very high rates of shear in that region. In agreement with this view of the structure of the turbulence, length scales derived from the apparent eddy viscosity and the local turbulent intensity are found to be comparable with distance from the wall. Length scales in the direction of the mean stream are much larger, and it is believed that the typical eddy is very elongated in this direction, and has its vorticity directed roughly parallel to the direction of maximum positive mean rate of strain.

This paper is devoted to a consideration of the following problem: Given a static state in which an incompressible viscous fluid is arranged in horizontal strata and the density is a function of the vertical coordinate only, to determine the initial manner of development of an infinitesimal disturbance. The mathematical problem is reduced to one in characteristic values in a fourth-order differential equation and a variational principle characterizing the solution is enunciated. The particular case of two uniform fluids of different densities (but the same kinematic viscosity) separated by a horizontal boundary is considered in some detail. The mode of maximum instability in case the upper fluid is more dense and the manner of decay in case the lower fluid is more dense are determined; and the results of the calculations are illustrated graphically. Gravity waves (obtained in the limit when the density of the upper fluid is zero) are also treated.

Random walk on a d-dimensional lattice is investigated such that, at any stage, the probabilities of the step being in the various possible directions depend upon the direction of the previous step. The motion may be characterized by a generating function which is here derived. The generating function is then used to obtain some general properties of the walk. Certain special cases are considered in greater detail. The existence of recurrent points is investigated in particular, and the probability of returning to the origin after 2n steps. This latter function is evaluated asymptotically for the cases d = 1 and d = an even integer.

There exist naturally occurring enzymes (topoisomerases and recombinases), which, in order to mediate the vital life processes of replication, transcription, and recombination, manipulate cellular DNA in topologically interesting and non-trivial ways [24, 30]. These enzyme actions include promoting the coiling up (supercoiling) of DNA molecules, passing one strand of DNA through another via a transient enzyme-bridged break in one of the strands (a move performed by topoisomerase), and breaking a pair of strands and recombining them to different ends (a move performed by recombinase). An interesting development for topology has been the emergence of a new experimental protocol, the topological approach to enzymology [30], which directly exploits knot theory in an effort to understand enzyme action. In this protocol, one reacts artificial circular DNA substrate with purified enzyme in vitro (in the laboratory); the enzyme acts on the circular DNA, causing changes in both the euclidean geometry (supercoiling) of the molecules and in the topology (knotting and linking) of the molecules. These enzyme-caused changes are experimental observables, using gel electrophoresis to fractionate the reaction products, and rec A enhanced electron microscopy [15] to visualize directly and to determine unambiguously the DNA knots and links which result as products of an enzyme reaction. This experimental technique calls for the building of knot-theoretic models for enzyme action, in which one wishes mathematically to extract information about enzyme mechanism from the observed changes in the DNA molecules.

The linear system |K + C| ‘adjoint’ to a curve C on a projective surface was studied by the classical Italian geometers. The adjoint system to a hyperplane section H of smooth projective surface was investigated systematically, in modern terms, by Sommese [22] and Van de Ven [26]. The map associated to the linear system |K + (r−1)H|, where H is a hyperplane section of a smooth variety of arbitrary dimension r, was used to classify submanifolds of ℙn with ‘small invariants’ (e.g. degree, sectional genus, etc.); see [10]. On the other hand, Sommese [23, 24, 25] studied adjoint systems to a smooth ample divisor H on a smooth threefold X and obtained, as applications, many interesting results about the pair (X, H). As noticed independently by several authors (see e.g. [17], [4], [11]) the appearance of Mori's deep contribution [20] (see also [21]) put the subject of adjunction in a new perspective. Accordingly, the present paper–which relies heavily on Mori's results and on the contraction theorem due to Kawamata-Shokurov (see [14])–contains a systematical study of various adjoint systems to an ample (possibly non-effective) divisor on a manifold of arbitrary dimension. More precisely, the main result (which is contained in Section 1) gives the precise description of polarized pairs (X, H), where X is a complex projective mani–fold of dimension r and H an ample divisor on it (not necessarily effective), such that Kx + iH is not semiample (respectively ample) for 1 ≤ i = r + 1, r, r − 1, r − 2 (respectively i = r + 1, r, r − 1).

The Vitali covering principle is a powerful method in a wide class of problems of the theory of functions of a real variable and of the theory of sets.

The equations of propagation of electromagnetic waves, simple harmonic in time, in an optically anisotropic stratified medium are obtained from the treatment of the refracted wave as the resultant of the incident wave and wavelets scattered by the elements of volume of the medium, and are reduced to a simple form.

The primitive property of the medium, from which the other optical properties are derived, is the scattering tensor, relating the induced dipole moment per unit volume to the applied electric field.

The relation between the dielectric tensor (corresponding to the dielectric constant of an isotropic medium) and the scattering tensor is obtained.

A medium consisting of classical oscillators in an external magnetic field is then considered, the scattering tensor and dielectric tensor are evaluated for such a medium, and finally a formula for the refractive index is obtained.

For an ionised medium the formula differs from that obtained by Goldstein; the difference is due to the inclusion in the present treatment of a term omitted by Goldstein; the significance of this term is discussed, and its inclusion justified.

Taking this term into account makes an important difference to the properties of the medium for long waves; an example is given.

The momentum distribution has been calculated for an electron in one of the hybridized orbitals of a carbon atom, and is shown as a function of the degree of hybridization. The mean momentum shows a steady increase from pure s to pure p binding. Similar calculations have been made for the momentum distribution in the C—H bond, and it is shown that this also depends upon the degree of s-p mixing. The mean momentum for the bond is less than for an isolated hybridized carbon orbital, but behaves similarly to such an orbital when the degree of hybridization is varied. The differences are about within the limit of experimental determination.

Global existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions and continuous dependence of solutions on varied initial data are established for the initial-value problem for the coupled system of equations

This system has the same formal justification as a model for the two-way propagation of (one-dimensional) long waves of small but finite amplitude in an open channel of water of constant depth as other versions of the Boussinesq equations. A feature of the analysis is that bounds on the wave amplitude η are obtained which are valid for all time.

One of the most important constructions in topos theory ia that of the category Shv (A) of sheaves on a locale (= complete Heyting algebra) A. Normally, the objects of this category are described as ‘presheaves on A satisfying a gluing condition’; but, as Higgs(7) and Fourman and Scott(5) have observed, they may also be regarded as ‘sets structured with an A-valued equality predicate’ (briefly, ‘A-valued sets’). From the latter point of view, it is an inessential feature of the situation that every sheaf has a canonical representation as a ‘complete’ A-valued set. In this paper, our aim is to investigate those properties which A must have for us to be able to construct a topos of A-valued sets: we shall see that there is one important respect, concerning the relationship between the finitary (propositional) structure and the infinitary (quantifier) structure, in which the usual definition of a locale may be relaxed, and we shall give a number of examples (some of which will be explored more fully in a later paper (8)) to show that this relaxation is potentially useful.

An initial-boundary-value problem for the equation

is considered for x, t ≥ 0. This system is a model for long water waves of small but finite amplitude, generated in a uniform open channel by a wavemaker at one end. It is shown that, in contrast to an alternative, more familiar model using the Korteweg–deVries equation, the solution of (a) has good mathematical properties: in particular, the problem is well set in Hadamard's classical sense that solutions corresponding to given initial data exist, are unique, and depend continuously on the specified data.

Calculations have been made of the cross-section for ionization of the inner shells of atoms by electron impact in the cases of the K-shells of nickel, silver, mercury and of the three L-shells of silver and mercury.

The agreement with experiment is reasonably good for the K-shell ionization, but only fair in the case of the rather meagre experimental data available for the L-shell. The values obtained for the relative ionization in the K- and L-shells are in good agreement with those to be expected from experiment.

General methods for solving two-dimensional punch and crack problems in classical elasticity have been developed by Muskhelishvili and others. An alternative method for solving such problems is presented here. Use is made of suitable integral representations of the complex potentials and each problem is reduced to the solution of an Abel or Fredholm type of integral equation.

If a Quillen model category can be specified using a certain logical syntax (intuitively, ‘is algebraic/combinatorial enough’), so that it can be defined in any category of sheaves, then the satisfaction of Quillen's axioms over any site is a purely formal consequence of their being satisfied over the category of sets. Such data give rise to a functor from the category of topoi and geometric morphisms to Quillen model categories and Quillen adjunctions.

Boundary-layer equations for the unsteady flow near an effectively infinite flat plate set into motion in its own plane are subjected to von Mises's transformation. Solutions are obtained for the flows in which gravity is neglected, the Prandtl number σ is arbitrary, and the plate has a constant temperature and a velocity that is either uniform or, with dissipation neglected, non-uniform. Explicit solutions are obtained for the case in which the viscosity μr varies directly as the absolute temperature Tr. Solutions are also obtained for the diffusion of a plane vortex sheet in a gas, and for the boundary layer near a uniformly accelerated plate of constant temperature when gravity is not neglected. For the non-uniform motion of a heat-insulated plate, dissipation not being negligible, a solution is obtained when σ is 1 and μr ∝ Tr. The relative importance of free convection due to gravity and forced convection due to viscosity is discussed, and a solution is obtained, with μr ∝ Tr, for the free convection current set up near a plate that is at rest in a gas at a temperature different from that of the plate, dissipation being neglected.

For elastic or plastic media the linkages between basic properties at two levels of description are rigorously analysed. At one level the material is structurally heterogeneous, while at the other it behaves macroscopically as if homogeneous. The deformation is unrestricted as to magnitude, but is treated incrementally. Full account is taken of coupling between stresses and rotations within a representative volume. Theorems on spatial averages of tensor variables and their products are reviewed and extended. Relations between constitutively significant quantities at both levels are developed by means of tensor influence functions associated with auxiliary elastic fields. The analysis is conducted primarily in terms of non-objective variables and a Lagrangian reference configuration. A final transformation to intrinsic variables is effected with the help of some novel operators.

The commonest form of Langmuir's adsorption isotherm is

where θ is the fraction of the surface of the solid covered by adsorbed molecules, p the gas pressure in equilibrium with the adsorbed layer and A = A (T) a function of the temperature alone. This formula is usually derived by a kinetic argument which balances the rates of deposition and re-evaporation. It is perhaps not without interest to show that formula (1) and similar formulae can be obtained directly by the usual statistical methods which evaluate all the properties of the equilibrium state of any assembly. The ordinary derivation is apt to obscure the essentially thermodynamic character of (1) and to lead one to think that its form depends on the precise mechanisms of deposition and re-evaporation, whereas in fact it depends only on the whole set of states, adsorbed and free, accessible to the molecules in question. By suitable use of the usual technique for handling assemblies obeying the Fermi-Dirac statistics the saturation effect can be naturally incorporated in the theory ab initio.
