A new concept of generating tight bunches of electrons accelerated to high energies is proposed. The electrons are born via ionization of a low-density neutral gas by laser radiation, and the concept is based on the electrons acceleration in traps arising within the pattern of interference of several relativistically intense laser pulses with amplitude fronts tilted relative to their phase fronts. The traps move with the speed of light and (1) collect electrons; (2) compress them to extremely high density in all dimensions, forming electron bunches; and (3) accelerate the resulting bunches to energies of at least several GeV per electron. The simulations of bunch formation employ the Newton equation with the corresponding Lorentz force.

In this paper, we present and compare the two different XUV interferometric techniques using high-order harmonics that have been developed so far. The first scheme is based on the interference between two spatially separated phase-locked harmonic sources while the second uses two temporally separated harmonic sources. These techniques have been applied to plasma diagnostics in feasibility experiments where electron densities up to a few 1020 e−/cm3 have been measured with a temporal resolution of 200 fs. We present the main characteristics of each technique and discuss their respective potentials and limitations.

As the energy spread of intense pulsed electron beams (IPEB) strongly influences the irradiation effects, it has been of great importance to characterize the IPEB energy spectrum. With the combination of Child–Langmuir law and Monte Carlo simulation, the IPEB energy spectrum has been obtained in this work by transformation from the accelerating voltage applied to the diode. To verify the accuracy of this simple algorithm, a magnetic spectrometer with an imaging plate was designed to test the IPEB energy spectrum. The measurement was completed with IPEB generated by explosive emission electron diode, the pulse duration, maximum electron energy, total beam current being 80 ns, 450 keV, and 1 kA, respectively. The results verified the reliability of the above analysis method for energy spectrum, which can avoid intercepting the beam, and at the same time significantly improved the energy resolution. Some calculation and experimental details are discussed in this paper.

Due to the recent developments in high power lasers in the multi-petawatt domain it seems now feasible to accelerate a micro-foil to relativistic velocities. In this paper, we calculate analytically the high velocities achieved by the ponderomotive force of the irradiating laser. The accelerated foil collides with a second foil resulting in the creation of the relativistic shock waves. The density, pressure, temperature, and shock wave velocities are calculated within the context of relativistic fluid dynamics. The calculated thermodynamic parameters that are achieved in these collisions are enormous.

Beam-generated magnetic fields strongly influence the behavior of relativistic electron guns. Existing methods used in ray-tracing codes have limited accuracy and may not correctly represent nonlaminar beams. We describe a technique for the magnetic field calculation in a two-dimensional code based on the assignment of particle currents to the faces of elements in the mesh used for the electrostatic calculation. The balanced calculation of electric and magnetic forces in the same iteration cycle reduces the possibility of numerical filamentation instabilities. With simple rules of assignment on boundary faces, the method also handles field contributions of electrode currents. Several benchmark calculations performed on conformal meshes illustrate the versatility of the technique.

At the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI, Darmstadt) intense beams of energetic heavy ions have been used to generate high-energy-density (HED) state in matter by impact on solid targets. Recently, we have developed a new method by which we use the same heavy ion beam that heats the target to provide information about the physical state of the interior of the target (Varentsov et al., 2001). This is accomplished by measuring the energy loss dynamics (ELD) of the beam emerging from the back surface of the target. For this purpose, a new time-resolving energy loss spectrometer (scintillating Bragg-peak (SBP) spectrometer) has been developed. In our experiments we have measured energy loss dynamics of intense beams of 238U, 86Kr, 40Ar, and 18O ions during the interaction with solid rare-gas targets, such as solid Ne and solid Xe. We observed continuous reduction in the energy loss during the interaction time due to rapid hydrodynamic response of the ion-beam-heated target matter. These are the first measurements of this kind. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were carried out using the beam and target parameters of the experiments. The conducted research has established that the ELD measurement technique is an excellent diagnostic method for HED matter. It specifically allows for direct and quantitative comparison with the results of hydrodynamic simulations, providing experimental data for verification of computer codes and underlying theoretical models. The ELD measurements will be used as a standard diagnostics in the future experiments on investigation of the HED matter induced by intense heavy ion beams, such as the HI-HEX (Heavy Ion Heating and EXpansion) EOS studies (Hoffmann et al., 2002).

Nonlinear propagation of ion acoustic waves has been studied in unmagnetized quantum (degenerate) plasma in the presence of an ion beam using the one-dimensional quantum hydrodynamic model. The Korteweg–de Vries (K–dV) equation has been derived by using the reductive perturbation technique. The solution of ion acoustic solitary waves is obtained from the K–dV equation. The theoretical results have been analyzed numerically for different values of plasma parameters and the results are presented graphically. It is seen that the formation and structure of solitary waves are significantly affected by the ion beam in quantum plasma. The solitary waves will be compressive or rarefactive depending upon the values of velocity, concentration, and temperature of the ion beam. The critical value of ion beam density for the nonexistence of solitary wave has been numerically estimated, and its variation with velocity and temperature of ion beam has been discussed graphically. The results are new and would be very useful for understanding the beam–plasma interactions and the formation of nonlinear wave structures in dense quantum plasma.

The effects of radiation transport on nonlocal electron heat flow in high Z laser-produced plasmas is studied. Using a Fokker-Planck model for the electron heat flow, which is coupled to a radiation transport model, it is found that radiation transport strongly modifies electron heat transport at the critical surface and in the overdense regions for an aluminum plasma. It is concluded that, without radiation transport effects, the plasma temperature, as computed from Fokker-Planck models, is overestimated in the critical region and underestimated in the overdense region, for high-Z plasmas.

This article presents the resonant excitation of the upper hybrid wave (UHW) by cross focusing of two high power laser beams in a collisionless hot magnetoplasma; taking into account the relativistic nonlinearity. The electric vectors of the two beams are polarized along uniform static magnetic field and the beams propagate perpendicular to the static magnetic field. The resonant excitation of the UHW occurs when the frequency difference (FD) of the two laser beams and difference of their propagation vector satisfy the dispersion relation corresponding to the UHW. It has been observed that the power associated with the excited UHW, which depends on the background electron concentration, magnetic field and the intensity of the two laser beams, becomes drastically modified with the distance of propagation. The effect of the excited UHW at the FD on the acceleration of electrons has also been discussed. The amplitude of the UHW, excited by two high power laser beams and the electron energy are also calculated. This study is relevant in heating of plasma near the upper hybrid frequency as well as electron acceleration. The results are presented for typical laser plasma parameters.

In this work, the interaction of a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with tungsten–titanium (W-Ti) alloy deposited on austenitic stainless steel is considered. The W-Ti alloy as a refractory material possesses very good physicochemical characteristics such as thermochemical stability and high melting temperature. Studying of interactions of different energetic particles or laser beams with W-Ti coatings has both application and fundamental importance.

The morphological features of the W-Ti coating, deposited on austenitic stainless steel AISI 316, induced by a TEA CO2 laser after multipulse cumulative laser action, have been considered. The laser pulses with tail (FWHM = 120 ns, tail = 2 μs) and free-tail pulses (FWHM = 80 ns) have been employed. Laser pulses used in the experiment had equal peak power density I = 120 MWcm−2. For the given peak power density, excessive surface changes on the coating were registered. From direct observation on a microscopic scale (OM, SEM), it can be concluded that W-Ti coatings show different behavior under laser irradiation with various temporal pulse shapes.

The start of a new issue in a new year is always an opportunity to look back and to say thank you to the members of the editorial board and the editorial staff who made it possible that we were able to publish four interesting issues in Volume 24 last year. First of all, I want to thank the scientific community for submitting a large number of excellent original research papers to Laser and Particle Beams. In 2006, we were able to publish 71 articles plus editorial material and corrections. The average article in the journal is now 8–9 printed pages, and we have thus achieved the editorial goal to offer the community a place to publish their results without general space restrictions. Authors have accepted this opportunity to present their material with the necessary details. This seems to be very important to readers and authors as well, and we see that for a second consecutive year many articles in Laser and Particle Beams are referenced already during the first year, which is remarkable for a small journal with only four issues per year.

The radiative reaction effect of an electron is usually very small and can be neglected in most cases. But for an ultra intensity laser-electron interaction region, the radiation can become large. The influence of the radiative reaction effect of an electron interacting with an ultra intense laser pulses in vacuum on electron dynamics is investigated within the classical relativistic Lorentz-Dirac approach. A predictor-corrector method is proposed to numerically solve the equation of motion with the electron radiative reaction included. We study the counter-propagating case (for Thomson scattering scheme) and the same direction propagating cases (for laser acceleration). Our simulation results show that radiation can have great effect in the counter-propagating case. But in the vacuum laser electron acceleration regime, both the ponderomotive acceleration scenario case and the capture and acceleration scenario, radiative reaction effect can totally be ignored for laser intensity available presently or in the near-future.

Focusing processes of a rotating and propagating light ion beam in the drift region are studied numerically by using a 2-dimensional hybrid (particle–fluid) code. An intense ion beam with the current density of 8 kA/cm2 and the total current of 2·5 MA, which is extracted from the diode with the applied voltage of 5·6 MV, is injected into the drift region filled with a low-density plasma. When a radial magnetic field is applied to the neighborhood of entrance, the beam ions start to rotate in the azimuthal direction owing to the Lorentz force. When the pressure of the background plasma is chosen such as the density of the beam becomes comparable with that of the background plasma in the vicinity of the focal spot, the current-neutralization fraction decreases and large self-magnetic fields are induced. The beam is confined by the fields within a small radius, even after passing the focal spot. Because the angular momentum of the beam is conserved, the beam rotation velocity increases up to the same order of the propagation one at a few mm radius. This rotation motion induces the azimuthal magnetic field and stabilizes the beam propagation. In the case where the plasma pressure was 3·0 Torr and the 0·2-Tesla radial magnetic field was applied over the distance of 2·0 cm near the entrance, the maximum beam intensity of 108TW/cm2 in the axial direction was obtained and the half width at half maximum (HWHM) of the focused profile was 3·5 mm.

The first demonstration of a nuclear-pumped laser (NPL) dates back to the mid-1970s while theoretical studies started earlier. This history will be briefly reviewed, followed by a discussion of the present status of various NPL concepts. Both physics and engineering issues are noted. Most attention has been given to gaseous media due to problems associated with radiation damage in liquid- and solid-state media. Various pumping methods, ranging from direct pumping of the laser medium to the use of nuclear-pumped flashlamps, will be discussed. Recent experimental results on pumping of O2(1Δ), the first demonstration of a nuclear-pumped flashlamp-driven laser XeBr*-I, and the new 3He-Ne-H2 NPL will be presented. Potential applications and corresponding NPL requirements, e.g., the long delay time requirements for an inertial fusion driver based upon NPLs, will be reviewed.

ELBA is a three-dimensional, particle-in-cell, simulation code that has been developed to study the propagation and transport of relativistic charged particle beams. The code is particularly suited to the simulation of relativistic electron beams propagating through collisionless or slightly collisional plasmas or through external electric or magnetic fields. Particle motion is followed via a coordinate “window” in the laboratory frame that moves at the speed of light. This scheme allows us to model only the immediate vicinity of the beam. Because no information can move in the forward direction in these coordinates, particle and field data can be handled in a simple way that allows for very large scale simulations. A mapping scheme has been implemented that, with corrections to Maxwell's equations, allows the inclusion of bends in the simulation system.

An experimental technique based on optical scattering to detect melting in release of strongly shocked materials is presented. This method is used to study the asymptotic behavior of the free surface of shock-loaded materials. After reflection of a shock wave from a metallic sample free surface, occurrence of a solid to liquid transition will induce a dynamic behavior such as mass ejection and development of instabilities. A study of the mass ejection due to laser-induced shock waves in aluminium, copper, and tin targets is presented. Shock waves of order of hundreds of kilobars to more than one megabar are produced by a Nd:YAG laser system with a wavelength of 1.06 μm, pulse width of 7 ns FWHM focused to spot of 200 μm. The velocities, size, and topological structure of the ejected particles are measured. The radii of the ejecta are in the range 0.5–7 μm.

In this paper, the scheme of generation of second harmonics of incident electromagnetic wave having a Hermite–Gaussian intensity profile in an under dense relativistic plasma has been presented. The relativistic mass variation of electrons by the intense electric field of incident beam generates the density gradients in background plasma which further excites the electron plasma wave (EPW) at resonant frequency and coupling of the EPW with the incident beam results in the generation of second harmonics of incident beam. Propagation dynamics of the Hermite–Gaussian laser beam in plasma has been studied by the formulation of differential equation for the spot size of the laser beam with the help of method of moments. Numerical simulations have been carried out to solve the differential equation for the dimensionless beam width parameters. Solution of the nonlinear wave equation for the electric field vector of second harmonics of incident beam gives the expression for second-harmonic yield. It has been observed that second-harmonic yield is affected by the different modes of Hermite–Gaussian laser beam in relativistic plasma.

The Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory High Current Experiment (HCX) is exploring transport issues such as dynamic aperture, effects of quadrupole rotation, and the effects on the beam of nonideal distribution function, mismatch, and electrons, using one driver-scale 0.2 μC/m, 2–10 μs coasting K+ beam. Two- and three-dimensional simulations are being done, using the particle-in-cell code WARP to study these phenomena. We present results which predict that the dynamic aperture in the electrostatic focusing transport section will be set by particle loss.

In this paper, the authors have presented a paraxial theory for propagation of (1) Gaussian (2) dark hollow Gaussian high power laser beams in the atmosphere, considering the nonlinearity arising from the temperature variation along the wave-front. Specifically, the focusing parameter for both beams has been evaluated as a function of distance and initial beam power and width (corresponding to radiation of wavelengths 1.045 µ, 1.625 µ, and 2.141 µ in the water absorption window) for the maritime, desert, rural, and urban environments as modeled at NRL; the results have been presented in the dimensionless form. It is seen that in all four environments a dark hollow beam defocuses less than the corresponding Gaussian beam of same radius and power. It is suggested that this conclusion based on the paraxial theory be verified by numerical simulation.
