In this paper, the scheme of generation of second harmonics of incident electromagnetic wave having a Hermite–Gaussian intensity profile in an under dense relativistic plasma has been presented. The relativistic mass variation of electrons by the intense electric field of incident beam generates the density gradients in background plasma which further excites the electron plasma wave (EPW) at resonant frequency and coupling of the EPW with the incident beam results in the generation of second harmonics of incident beam. Propagation dynamics of the Hermite–Gaussian laser beam in plasma has been studied by the formulation of differential equation for the spot size of the laser beam with the help of method of moments. Numerical simulations have been carried out to solve the differential equation for the dimensionless beam width parameters. Solution of the nonlinear wave equation for the electric field vector of second harmonics of incident beam gives the expression for second-harmonic yield. It has been observed that second-harmonic yield is affected by the different modes of Hermite–Gaussian laser beam in relativistic plasma.

The Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory High Current Experiment (HCX) is exploring transport issues such as dynamic aperture, effects of quadrupole rotation, and the effects on the beam of nonideal distribution function, mismatch, and electrons, using one driver-scale 0.2 μC/m, 2–10 μs coasting K+ beam. Two- and three-dimensional simulations are being done, using the particle-in-cell code WARP to study these phenomena. We present results which predict that the dynamic aperture in the electrostatic focusing transport section will be set by particle loss.

We describe the operation of a repetitive semiconductor opening switch in conjunction with inductive energy storage systems. Different materials and switch configurations are examined. A new method of generating square pulses of nanosecond duration is implemented. It utilizes the opening switch and a current charged transmission line.

We give on overview of recent advances in collisionally pumped optical field-ionization soft X-ray lasers developed at LOA. Saturated amplification has been achieved on the 5d-5p transition in Xe8+ at 41.8 nm, and on the 4d-4p transition in Kr8+ at 32.8 nm. We demonstrate a significant increase of the energy output from the Xe8+ laser driven within two types of wave-guide. Finally, we present results of a pioneering work aimed to set up and characterize the first true soft X-ray laser chain.

Previous work on the evolution of weak double layers in a hydrogen plasma has been extended to include H+ and O+ with relative drift. It has been shown (Bergmann & Lotko 1986) that the relative drift between hydrogen and oxygen ions due to a quasistatic parallel electric field gives rise to a strong linear fluid instability which dominates the ion acoustic mode at the bottom of the auroral acceleration region. This ion–ion instability can modify ion distributions at lower altitudes and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of weak double layers at higher altitudes in the ion acoustic regime. We have found that ion hole formation can occur for smaller relative electron-ion drifts than seen in previous simulations, due to the hydrogen-oxygen two-stream instability. This results in local modification of the ion distributions in phase space, and a partial filling of the valley between the hydrogen and oxygen peaks, which would be expected at higher altitudes on auroral field lines. It is shown that the observed velocity diffusion does not necessarily preclude ion hole and double layer formation in hydrogen in the ion acoustic regime. These simulation results are consistent with the experimentally measured persistence of separate hydrogen and oxygen peaks, and the observation of weak double layers above an altitude of 3000 km on auroral field lines.

The energy loss and disintegration dynamics of large carbon clusters (C60 molecules) in hot plasmas is calculated. The calculation self-consistently includes the cluster disintegration, the evolution of the charge of the fragment ions, the screened Coulomb forces among them, and the effects of interference between neighboring ions on the energy loss. A range of projectile energies and plasma parameters is considered. A large enhancement factor in the energy deposition due to the interference is found at the early stage of the interaction.

The acceleration of ions (∼108 cm/s) has been observed in the laser produced plasma expanding across an uniform magnetic field at low laser irradiance (∼5 × 1012 W/cm2). This acceleration was found correlated with the onset of instabilities in the plasma and decrease in the slope of X-ray emission with laser intensity. A large enhancement in the X-ray emission (E > 2 KeV) from plasma in the presence of magnetic field supports the observation of ion acceleration. An increase in the number of ions was noticed in the pressure range in which enhancement in the self-generated spontaneous magnetic field has already been established. Even scaling of both the variations with chamber pressure during rising part was found in close agreement, which further supports the correlation. The possibility of an external magnetic field in triggering the acceleration and space charge potential in generating a correlation (between ion acceleration and self-generated spontaneous magnetic field) has been discussed.

In this paper, the authors have presented a paraxial theory for propagation of (1) Gaussian (2) dark hollow Gaussian high power laser beams in the atmosphere, considering the nonlinearity arising from the temperature variation along the wave-front. Specifically, the focusing parameter for both beams has been evaluated as a function of distance and initial beam power and width (corresponding to radiation of wavelengths 1.045 µ, 1.625 µ, and 2.141 µ in the water absorption window) for the maritime, desert, rural, and urban environments as modeled at NRL; the results have been presented in the dimensionless form. It is seen that in all four environments a dark hollow beam defocuses less than the corresponding Gaussian beam of same radius and power. It is suggested that this conclusion based on the paraxial theory be verified by numerical simulation.

SPARC and SPARX are two different initiatives toward an Italian Free Electron Laser (FEL) source operating in the Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) mode, in which several national research institutions are involved. SPARC is a high gain FEL project devoted to provide a source of visible and VUV radiation while exploiting the SASE mechanism. An advanced Photo-Injector system, emittance compensating RF-gun plus a 150 MeV Linac, will inject a high quality e-beam into the undulator to generate high brilliance FEL radiation in the visible region at the fundamental wavelength, (∼500 nm). The production of flat top drive laser beams, high peak current bunches, and emittance compensation scheme will be investigated together with the generation of higher harmonic radiation in the VUV region. SPARX is the direct evolution of such a high gain SASE FEL toward the 13.5 and 1.5 nm operating wavelengths, at 2.5 GeV. To get the required value for the bunch peak current, Ipeak ≈ 2.5 kA, the “hybrid” scheme, RF-compression stage plus magnetic chicane, is analyzed and compared with the more standard double stage of magnetic compression. The two options are reviewed considering the tolerance to the drive laser pulse phase jitter.

A treatment is given of harmonics generation resulting from nonlinear inverse bremsstrahlung in a plasma with an anisotropic bi-Maxwellian electron velocity distribution function. A complete characterization of the process is reported. In particular, analytically and numerically we established how the efficiency of the odd harmonics generation and their polarization depend on such process parameters as: (1) the degree of effective temperature anisotropy, (2) the frequency and the intensity of the fundamental wave, and (3) the angle between the fundamental wave field direction and the symmetry axis of the electron distribution function.

A kinetic model for KrF is presented that, by neglecting all but the most important kinetic processes, adequately describes the performance of electron-beam-pumped KrF lasers by a few, simple analytical expressions. The expression for the saturation intensity as a function of pump rate and gas composition is checked by measurements of gain saturation in both argon-rich and krypton-rich laser mixtures. The effects of fluorine burn-up are considered and are shown to impose a fundamental relationship between output fluence and efficiency of KrF laser amplifiers.

We present two interferometry schemes in the extreme ultraviolet, based on either the wave-front division of a unique harmonic beam (1st scheme) or two spatially separated, phase-locked harmonic sources (2nd scheme). In the first scheme using a Fresnel bimirror interferometer, we measure the degree of spatial coherence of the 13th harmonic generated in xenon, as a function of different parameters. A high degree of coherence, larger than 0.5, is found for the best conditions in almost the full section of the beam. Then, we demonstrate that the second scheme can be used for interferometry measurements with an ultrahigh time resolution. The 11th harmonic is used to study the spatial variation of the electron density of a laser-produced plasma. Electronic densities higher than 2.1020 cm−3 are measured.

The effect of viscosity on the growth reduction of Rayleigh–Taylor modes is studied. It is shown that short wavelength perturbations are strongly damped; however the growth of the most relevant modes in fusion pellets is nearly unaffected.

The present study deals with the propagation of short laser pulses in a parabolic plasma channel. A variational technique is used to obtain simultaneous evolution equations describing the laser pulse length and spot size in the presence of relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities. The effect of wakefields (inside the pulse) on the propagation characteristics of the laser beam is studied. Numerical methods are used to graphically analyze the evolution of the laser pulse length and intensity.

Hemispherical electron plasma waves generated from ultraintense laser interacting with a solid target having a subcritical preplasma is studied using particle-in-cell simulation. As the laser pulse propagates inside the preplasma, it becomes self-focused due to the response of the plasma electrons to the ponderomotive force. The electrons are mainly heated via betatron resonance absorption and their thermal energy can become higher than the ponderomotive energy. The hot electrons easily penetrate through the thin solid target and appear behind it as periodic hemispherical shell-like layers separated by the laser wavelength.

Numerical analysis of the kinetics in an e-beam excited KrF laser medium demonstrates the feasibility of a compact KrF fusion driver operating at high intensity (∼100MW/cm2) and intrinsic efficiency (∼20%) in a Kr/F2 mixture. Some primitive concepts of KrF fusion driver modules are discussed.

The interaction of dust-acoustic (DA) shock waves in a magnetized dusty plasma under the influence of nonextensively modified polarization force is investigated. The plasma model consists of negatively charged dust, Maxwellian electrons, nonextensive ions, and polarization force. In this investigation, we have derived the expression of polarization force in the presence of nonextensive ions and illustrated the head-on collision between two DA shock waves. The extended Poincaré–Lighthill–Kuo (PLK) method is employed to obtain the two-sided Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers (KdVB) equations and phase shifts of two shock waves. The trajectories and phase shifts of negative potential dust-acoustic shock waves after collision are examined. The combined effects of various physical parameters such as polarization force, nonextensivity of ions, viscosity of dust, and magnetic field strength on the phase shifts of DA shock waves have been studied. The present investigation might be useful to study the process of collision of nonlinear structures in space dusty plasma such as planetary rings where non-Maxwellian particles such as nonextensive ions, negatively charged dust, and electrons are present.

Stimulated Brillouin backscattering of an intense hollow Gaussian laser beam (HGLB) from collisionless plasma has been investigated under relativistic–ponderomotive regime. The main feature of considered hollow Gaussian laser beam is having the same power at different beam orders with null intensity at the center. Backscattered radiation is generated due to nonlinear interaction between main beam (pump beam) with pre-excited ion acoustic wave (IAW). Modified coupled equations has been set up for the beam width parameters of the main beam, ion-acoustic wave, back-scattered wave, and back reflectivity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with the help of the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation, fluid equations and paraxial theory approach. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the laser intensity in the plasma, the variation of amplitude of the excited IAW and back reflectivity of SBS. The back reflectivity of SBS is found to be highly sensitive to the order of the HGLB, intensity of main laser beam, and plasma density for typical laser and plasma parameters. The focusing of main laser beam (hollow Gaussian) and IAW significantly affected the back reflectivity of SBS. The results show that the self-focusing and back reflectivity is enhanced for higher order modes of HGLB.

Significant interest has recently focused on the use of liquid-metal targets flowing with high velocities for various high-power nuclear and high-energy physics applications such as fusion reactor first-walls, the Spallation Neutron Source, Isotope Separation On Line, and Muon Collider projects. This is because the heat generated in solid targets due to beam or plasma bombardment cannot be removed easily and the resulting thermal shock damage could be a serious lifetime problem for long-term operation. More recently, the use of free or open flying-liquid jets has been proposed for higher-power-density applications. The behavior of a free-moving liquid mercury or gallium jet subjected to proton beam deposition in a strong magnetic field has been modeled and analyzed for the Muon Collider project. Free-liquid-metal jets can offer significant advantages over conventional solid targets, particularly for the more demanding and challenging high-power applications. However, the use of free-moving liquid-metal targets raises a number of new and challenging problems such as instabilities of the jet in a strong magnetic field, induced eddy-current effects on jet shape, thermal-shock formation, and possible jet fragmentation. Problems associated with shock heating of liquid jets in a strong magnetic field are analyzed in this study.

This paper presents an investigation of self-focusing of intense Gaussian rippled laser beam in collisionless plasma by including the nonlinearity associated with the relativistic mass and the ponderomotive force and its effects on the excitation of ion acoustic wave. The growth of ripple, riding on an intense Gaussian laser beam in plasma and its coupling with ion acoustic wave has also been studied. Modified coupled equations for main laser beam, growth of laser ripple in plasma, rippled laser beam, beam width, and density perturbation associated with ion acoustic wave are derived using Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin and paraxial ray approximation. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the laser intensity in plasma and the variation of amplitude of the ion acoustic wave for various established laser and plasma parameters. From numerical computation, it is observed that both nonlinearities significantly affected the dynamics of the growth of laser ripple in plasma, propagation of rippled laser beam as well as ion acoustic wave in plasma at high laser power flux. The growth of laser ripple increase with increase in the intensity of laser beam and due to the contribution of growth rate, intensity profile of rippled laser beam and ion acoustic wave modified accordingly.
