In the paper, we study the conditions for the generation of backward runaway electrons through a grounded grid cathode in atmospheric pressure air at high-voltage pulses with a full width at half maximum of 1 ns and risetime of 0.3 ns applied to the gap from a SLEP-150 pulser. The study confirms that backward runaway electrons and X-rays do arise near grid cathodes in atmospheric pressure air. It is shown that the current of the backward beam and the X-rays from the gas diode depend differently on the interelectrode distance. The average X-ray exposure dose in a pulse is more than 3.5 mR.

In this work, a comparative study of low-temperature plasmas, induced in a gaseous nitrogen by photoionization of the gas using two different irradiation systems, was performed. Both systems were based on laser-produced Xe plasmas, emitting intense extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation pulses in a wide wavelength range. The essential difference between the systems concerned formation of the EUV beam. The first one utilized a dedicated ellipsoidal mirror for collecting and focusing of the EUV radiation. This way a high radiation fluence could be obtained for ionization of the N2 gas injected into the vacuum chamber. The second system did not contain any EUV collector. In this case, the nitrogen to be ionized was injected into the vicinity of the Xe plasma. In both cases, energies of emitted photons were sufficient for dissociative ionization, ionization of atoms or even ions. The resulting photoelectrons had also sufficiently high energy for further ionizations or excitations. Low-temperature plasmas, created this way, were investigated by spectral measurements in the EUV, ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) spectral ranges. Time-resolved UV/VIS spectra, corresponding to single-charged ions, molecules, and molecular ions, were recorded. Numerical simulations of the molecular spectra were performed allowing one to estimate vibrational and rotational temperatures of plasmas created using both irradiation systems.

To study the effect of explosive field emission cathodes on high power microwave generation, experiments were conducted on a reflex triode virtual cathode oscillator. Experimental results with cathodes made of graphite, stainless steel nails, and carbon fiber (needle type) are presented. The experiments have been performed at the 1 kJ Marx generator (200 kV, 300 ns, and 9 kA). The experimentally obtained electron beam diode perveance has been compared with the one-dimensional Child-Langmuir law. The cathode plasma expansion velocity has been calculated from the perveance data. It was found that the carbon fiber cathode has the lowest cathode plasma expansion velocity of 1.7 cm/μs. The radiated high power microwave has maximum field strength and pulse duration for the graphite cathode. It was found that the reflex triode virtual cathode oscillator radiates a single microwave frequency with the multiple needle cathodes for a shorter (<200 ns full width at half maximum) voltage pulse duration.

For spectral diagnosis, a repetitive laser-produced soft-X-ray source was examined in the range 2–40 nm using a spectrometer containing a pinhole transmission grating, an image converter, and a CCD camera. Via digital recording the detection system provides fast on-line data accumulation with spectral and spatial resolution. With this detector the performance of the light source was studied with respect to spectral emission characteristics, long-term stability, and reproducibility by recording spectra for different solid targets and liquid lead.

The impedance mismatch technique was used for shock pressure amplification in two layered planar foil targets. Numerical simulation results using one-dimensional (1D) radiation hydrocode MULTI in two layer target consisting of polyethylene (CH2)n-aluminium (Al) and polyethylene (CH2)n-gold (Au), show a pressure enhancement of 12 and 18 Mbar, respectively (or a pressure jump of 1.64 and 2.54, respectively), from initial pressure of 7 Mbar in the reference material (polyethylene) using laser intensity of 5 × 1013 Watts/cm2 at 1.064 μm. The simulation data was also corroborated by experiments in our laboratory. Results of laser driven shock wave experiments for pressure enhancement studies in CH2-Al and CH2-Au targets are also presented. A Nd:YAG laser chain (2 J, 1.064 μm wavelength, 200 ps pulse duration FWHM) is used for generating shocks in the planar CH2 foils of thickness varying from 4 to10 μm, and in two layered CH2-Al (or CH2-Au) targets with 8 μm CH2 and 1.5 μm Al or Au .

In order to improve the total laser-proton energy conversion efficiency, a nanobrush target is proposed for proton acceleration and investigated by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The simulation results show that the nanobrush target significantly enhances the energy and number of hot electrons through the target rear side. Compared with plain target, the sheath field on the rear surface is increased near 100% and the total laser-proton energy conversion efficiency is prompted more than 70%. Furthermore, the proton divergence angle is less than 30° by using nanobrush target. The proposed target may serve as a new method to increase the energy conversion efficiency from laser to protons.

In the present paper, we have studied self-focusing of Gaussian laser beam in weakly relativistic magnetized cold quantum plasma. When interparticle distance is comparable to the de Broglie wavelength of charged particles, we cannot neglect the quantum contribution of plasma constituents. Therefore, propagation characteristics are studied by taking in to account quantum contribution in the presence of static magnetic field applied along the beam propagation. Our results show that the magnetic field plays a key role in achieving additional focusing, it modifies the quiver motion of electrons by adding cyclotron frequency to the natural frequency of oscillating electrons during laser beam propagation. The results are compared with those of weakly relativistic quantum plasma and weakly relativistic magnetized plasma. The self-focusing is found to be more pronounced when axial magnetic field is increased in the present model. We have setup the non-linear differential equation for the evolution of beam-width parameter by well-known paraxial ray approximation and solved it with the help of computational technique.

The effect of laser intensity on characteristics of the plasma ablated from a low-Z (CH) planar target irradiated by a 250 ps, 0.438 µm laser pulse with the intensity of up to 1016 W/cm2 as well as on parameters of the laser-driven shock generated in the target for various scale-lengths of preformed plasma was investigated at the kilojoule Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) laser facility. Characteristics of the plasma were measured with the use of 3-frame interferometry, ion diagnostics, an X-ray spectrometer, and Kα imaging. Parameters of the shock generated in a Cl doped CH target by the intense 3ω laser pulse were inferred by numerical hydrodynamic simulations from the measurements of craters produced by the shock in the massive Cu target behind the CH layer. It was found that the pressure of the shock generated in the plastic layer is relatively weakly influenced by the preplasma (the pressure drop due to the preplasma presence is ~10–20%) and at the pulse intensity of ~1016 W/cm2 the maximum pressure reaches ~80–90 Mbar. However, an increase in pressure of the shock with the laser intensity is slower than predicted by theory for a planar shock and the maximum pressure achieved in the experiment is by a factor of ~2 lower than predicted by the theory. Both at the preplasma absence and presence, the laser-to-hot electrons energy conversion efficiency is small, ~1% or below, and the influence of hot electrons on the generated shock is expected to be weak.

A review of recent laser-driven shock wave experiments at the University of British Columbia is presented. These include emissivity and reflectivity measurements on target rear surfaces when the shock wave emerges as well as measurements of the trajectories of shock propagation in initially transparent targets irradiated by temporally tailored laser pulses. The rear surface measurements allowed us to study the equation of state and electron conductivity of dense plasmas while coalescence of shock waves was evident in the trajectory of shock waves driven by a shaped pulse.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will operate with 7 TeV/c protons with a luminosity of 1034 cm−2 s−1. This requires two beams, each with 2808 bunches. The nominal intensity per bunch is 1.15 × 1011 protons and the total energy stored in each beam is 362 MJ. In previous papers, the mechanisms causing equipment damage in case of a failure of the machine protection system was discussed, assuming that the entire beam is deflected onto a copper target. Another failure scenario is the deflection of beam, or part of it, into carbon material. Carbon collimators and beam absorbers are installed in many locations around the LHC close to the beam, since carbon is the material that is most suitable to absorb the beam energy without being damaged. In case of a failure, it is very likely that such absorbers are hit first, for example, when the beam is accidentally deflected. Some type of failures needs to be anticipated, such as accidental firing of injection and extraction kicker magnets leading to a wrong deflection of a few bunches. Protection of LHC equipment relies on the capture of wrongly deflected bunches with beam absorbers that are positioned close to the beam. For maximum robustness, the absorbers jaws are made out of carbon materials. It has been demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that carbon survives the impact of a few bunches expected for such failures. However, beam absorbers are not designed for major failures in the protection system, such as the beam dump kicker deflecting the entire beam by a wrong angle. Since beam absorbers are closest to the beam, it is likely that they are hit first in any case of accidental beam loss. In the present paper we present numerical simulations using carbon as target material in order to estimate the damage caused to carbon absorbers in case of major beam impact.

This article describes the current status of the KrF development programme based on the Sprite laser system at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. High reliability and high shot rate have been demonstrated. Using a unique KrF-pumped Raman laser architecture, beam brightness exceeding 2×1019 Wcm-2 sterad-1 giving a focussed intensity >5 ×1017 Wcm-2 has been achieved. The development of transform-limited short-pulse oscillators is shown to be of importance in avoiding spectral broadening in air propagation of high-intensity beams. Beam smoothing of KrF beams in a multiplexed configuration has been demonstrated for the first time. The technique of echelon-free induced spatial incoherence has been shown to produce smooth intensity distributions in the far field, which remain essentially unchanged on amplification. The development of pulsed-power systems capable of exciting multikilojoule laser amplifiers for the next phase of development, the Supersprite system, is briefly discussed.

We present results from a pitcher-catcher experiment utilizing a proton beam generated with nanostructured targets at a petawatt-class, short-pulse laser facility to induce proton-boron fusion reactions in a secondary target. A 45-fs laser pulse with either 400 nm wavelength and 7 J energy, or 800 nm and 14 J, and an intensity of up to 5 × 1021 W/cm2 was used to irradiate either thin foil targets or near-solid density, nanostructured targets made of boron nitride (BN) nanotubes. In particular, for 800 nm wavelength irradiation, a BN nanotube target created a proton beam with about five times higher maximum energy and about ten times more protons than a foil target. This proton beam was used to irradiate a thick plate made of boron nitride placed in close proximity to trigger 11B (p, α) 2α fusion reactions. A suite of diagnostics consisting of Thomson parabola ion spectrometers, postshot nuclear activation measurements, neutron time-of-flight detectors, and differentially filtered solid-state nuclear track detectors were used to measure both the primary proton spectrum and the fusion products. From the primary proton spectrum, we calculated (p, n) and (α,n) reactions in the catcher and compare with our measurements. The nuclear activation results agree quantitatively and neutron signals agree qualitatively with the calculations, giving confidence that primary particle distributions can be obtained from such measurements. These results provide new insights for measuring the ion distributions inside of proton-boron fusion targets.

Harmonics spectra in an n-type InP bulk semiconductor showing up to the 13th harmonic are reported. The external field is linearly polarized with the frequency ν = 100 GHz. Calculations are based on a Monte Carlo simulation for the electron motion in the conducting band and on an electrodynamics equation for the harmonics generation. The effect of a significant reduction of efficiency in the generation of particular harmonics is found, and is traced back to a sort of alternating field Gunn effect. A short analysis of the different physical mechanisms giving rise to harmonics generation is presented.

The characteristic of the over-volted breakdown and the gaseous recovery in short nitrogen gaps was experimentally studied. It was found that the breakdown voltage of the gap changes from shot to shot even with the same experimental conditions and obeys Gaussian distribution. The over-volted factor is reduced with an increasing pressure. With a 2.7-mm gap the over-volted factors are 4.53 for 0.1 MPa pressure and 1.74 for 0.4 MPa. The over-volted breakdown voltage depends individually on the gap spacing d and the gas pressure p, rather than on the product of pd. An empirical formula of the breakdown voltage as a function of p and d was derived. The time-dependent recovery of the breakdown voltage, RVb, was obtained using a two-pulse technique. The second breakdown voltage also obeys Gaussian distribution, but it is normally with a smaller standard deviation especially when the interpulse spacing of Δt is relatively short. As a whole, RVb rises with the increase of Δt. However, an intermediate plateau is always observed and it starts when the second breakdown voltage is a little bit higher than the static breakdown voltage of the gap. The first rising edge of the RVb curve corresponds to the recovery of the electro-neutrality and the density. The intermediate plateau and the following rising edge take the spark gap much longer time to recover. The processes governing these two latter phases are as yet not fully clear. It is attributed to the delayed recombination of the residual nitrogen atoms on the cathode to produce the initial electrons for the second breakdown. An increase in pressure has resulted in an upward shift of the intermediate plateau and a shortening in the recovery time of the gaps. The second spark generally does not follow the path of the first spark.

Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are performed to investigate the propagation of low energy continuous ion beams through background plasmas. It is shown that the continuous ion beam can be modulated into periodic short beam pulses by the induced wakefield, which can be adopted as a method to produce ultrashort ion beam pulses. Furthermore, the transport of the continuous ion beam in plasma with density gradient in the beam propagation direction is proposed and an enhanced longitudinal compression by density gradient is found due to the phase lock of ion pulses in the focusing regions of wakefield and reduced heating of plasma electrons.

We have performed simulations of the evolution of the turbulent Rayleigh–Taylor instability with an arbitrary Lagrange–Eulerian code. The problem specification was defined by Dimonte et al. (2003) for the “alpha group” code intercomparison project. Perfect γ = 5/3 gases of densities 1 and 3 g/cm3 are accelerated by constant gravity. The nominal problem uses a 2562 × 512 mesh with initial random multiwavelength interface perturbations. We have also run three-dimensional problems with smaller meshes and two-dimensional (2D) problems of several mesh sizes. Under-resolution lowered linear growth rates of the seed modes to 5-60% of the analytic values, depending on wavelength and orientation to the mesh. However, the mix extent in the 2D simulations changed little with grid refinement. Simulations without interface reconstruction gave penetration only slightly reduced from the case with interface reconstruction. Energy dissipation differs little between the two cases. The slope of the penetration distance versus time squared, corresponding to the α parameter in h = αAgt2, decreases with increasing time in these simulations. The slope, α, is consistent with the linear electric motor data of Dimonte and Schneider (2000), but the growth is delayed in time.

To investigate the influence of radiation reabsorption on the level populations of ions in an expanding laser-produced plasma of intermediate density, we start with the system of rate equations for the population densities coupled with the line-radiation transport equation, the dynamical Doppler effect due to the differential macroscopic velocity field included. In a physically motivated approximation, for spatially varying absorption and emission, and general three-dimensional plasma geometry, an integral equation describing the effect of Lyman-a radiation reabsorption on the spatial behavior of the population density of the upper resonance level is derived. Assuming a sufficiently large velocity gradient so that the Doppler-induced frequency shift dominates the linewidth, after asymptotically evaluating the frequency integral involved in the kernel we are led to a simplified integral equation exhibiting the reduction of radiation reabsorption by Doppler decoupling. In particular, in the case of a cylindrical, radially expanding laser plasma we discuss this Fredholm equation for the reabsorption-influenced population density.

In this paper, potential of diagnostics with the use of Kα radiation for an energy deposition process from an intense ion-beam to background plasma is considered quantitatively. Kα radiation is a good candidate for the purpose. The wavelength of Kα radiation is varied according to the charge state of an emitter atom, and the diagnostics spatially resolved with radiations from various kinds of charge states can give us a profile of plasma temperature in a target material. For the calculation of Kα yield, an atomic population kinetics code is developed, and the result shows that Kα radiation has potential to get information of a plasma profile heated by an intense ion-beam.

This paper presents a model to study the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) simultaneously at relativistic laser power. At high intensity, the relativistic mass correction for the plasma electrons becomes significant and the plasma refractive index gets modified which leads to the relativistic self-focusing of the pump beam. This filamentation process affects the scattering processes (SRS and SBS) and at the same time the pump filamentation process also gets modified in the presence of the coexisting SRS and SBS due to the pump depletion. We have also demonstrated that the pump depletion and relativistic filamentation affects the back-reflectivity of scattered beams (SRS and SBS) significantly, for the coexistence case.

The aim of this paper is to describe the influence of target plasma nuclei on the correlated motion of H2+ protons traversing classical plasma matter. Electronic stopping of the protons pair is treated by means of the dielectric formalism, while nuclear collisions are dealt within the classical dispersion theory through a Monte Carlo method. It is shown that vicinage electronic forces screen Coulomb repulsion between the two protons from H2+ ion decelerating the increase of their relative distance. Vicinage forces also align the interproton vector along the motion direction. However, proton interactions with plasma nuclei mask most of these vicinage effects. These nuclear collisions hide the screening effect produced by the vicinage forces, increasing the proton relative distance even faster than for bare Coulomb repulsion. The interproton vector along motion direction is also misaligned due to nuclear collisions. Nuclear collisions effects are more significant in reducing projectile velocity. In particular, all these effects are studied in a deuterium (D) plasma with temperature Te = 10 eV and electronic density n = 1023 cm−3.
