Laser prepulse effect on thermal smoothing of non-uniformities of target illumination is studied by means of 2D Lagrangian hydrodynamics simulation, based on parameters of real experiment. A substantial smoothing effect is demonstrated in case of an optimum delay between the prepulse and main heating laser pulse. The cause of enhancement of thermal smoothing effect by laser prepulse is the formation of long hot layer between the region of laser absorption and ablation surface. Comparison with experimental results is presented.

The ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using an atom-centered density matrix propagation method are carried out in the first time to investigate the dissociative electron attachment (DEA) processes of adenine and its tautomer in the gas phase. Since the incoming electron are captured on the lowest π∗ anti-bond orbital, which is led to the different N–H bond, the C–H bond and the C–N bond are broken. The dominant anion observed in DEA dissociation process is the closed-shell dehydrogenated anion (Ade − H)−. The additional anions (Ade − NH2)− and (Ade − 2H)− are also obtained in ADMP simulation. The results are well consistent with the previous DEA experimental results. Thus, the ADMP method is used to gain a more intuitive and better understanding of the necessary dissociation process in the DEA experiment.

Atomic modeling of high-Z partially ionized plasma is essential for simulating radiation hydrodynamics of laser-produced plasma. A collisional-radiative model based upon an average atom model is used to calculate plasma opacity and emissivity. Because line radiations are most dominant in such plasma, the detail configuration accounting (DCA) for electronic state is required. We propose a statistical method to carry out the DCA with the use of the average population of bound electrons. Further modeling of line group made of the same transition from ions in different change states is discussed by considering the detail structure (hierarchy) of the line group.

We report the results of measurements aimed to check the phase lock of time-delayed, collinear, harmonic pulses and to verify the possibility of performing Ramsey-like spectroscopy in the XUV. We demonstrate that for harmonics of medium order and for the peak intensities available with our laser system, the generation of collinear phase-locked harmonic pulses is indeed possible and that such pulses can be used to achieve high-resolution spectroscopy in the short-wavelength region.

Production of high dynamic pressure using a strong shock wave is a topic of high relevance for high-energy-density physics, inertial confinement fusion, and materials science. Although the pressures in the multi-Mbar range can be produced by the shocks generated with a large variety of methods, the higher pressures, in the sub-Gbar or Gbar range, are achievable only with nuclear explosions or laser-driven shocks. However, the laser-to-shock energy conversion efficiency in the laser-based methods currently applied is low and, as a result, multi-kJ multi-beam lasers have to be used to produce such extremely high pressures. In this paper, the generation of high-pressure shocks in the newly proposed collider in which the projectile impacting a solid target is driven by the laser-induced cavity pressure acceleration (LICPA) mechanism is investigated using two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. A special attention is paid to the dependence of shock parameters and the laser-to-shock energy conversion efficiency on the impacted target material and the laser driver energy. It has been found that both in case of low-density and high-density solid targets, the shock pressures in the sub-Gbar range can be produced in the LICPA-based collider with the laser energy of only a few hundreds of joules, and the laser-to-shock energy conversion efficiency can reach values of 10–20%, by an order of magnitude higher than the conversion efficiencies achieved with other laser-based methods used so far.

The time-resolved X-ray emission recorded from a plasma produced by a Nd laser at high intensity (>1014 W/cm2) shows successive bursts. They are correlated with the pulsation of the back-scattered second harmonic spectrum obtained during the same shot. Both results show that the plasmons resonantly excited at the critical surface by the laser waves can undergo quasiperiodically the collapse process.

We create hot (Te > 200 eV) and dense (Ne > 1023 cm−3) plasmas in the colliding zone of two thin foils accelerated by two laser beams of the LULI facilities. Three spectroscopic diagnostics (two 1D space-resolved spectrographs and a 2D monochromatic imaging) are used to drive the efficiency of the compression. We show that 2D effects are important. Realistic simulations of these experiments must be done, taking into account the inhomogeneity of the laser intensity in the focal spot, the foil distorsion, the plasma lateral expansion, and the lateral thermal conduction. Two-dimensional LASNEX code results are in good agreement with our experimental results. The optimized compressed plasmas generated are favorable for the exhibition of dense plasma effects due to molecular formations, and they reproduce in laboratory some astrophysical situations.

Starting from the Riemann-Silberstein formulation of classical electrodynamics the Schrödinger equation for the photon energy wave function is discussed. Hereafter, a propagator description of the space-time emission of a polychromatic photon from an atom is presented, paying particular attention to the near-field electrodynamics. When the atom is embedded in a solid-state plasma the photon emission process can be dramatically modified. Limiting the analyses to solid-state plasmas exhibiting translational and rotational symmetry, the near-field atom-photon-plasma interaction is studied paying particular attention to the plasmariton and plasmon excitation processes. It is shown that the transverse and longitudinal parts of the plasma-screened field propagator link in a direct manner to the free-photon propagator and the longitudinal near-field photon propagator. The necessity of keeping both the transverse and longitudinal parts of the plasma screening in a rigorous description of near-field electrodynamics is demonstrated.

Thermal energy transport in laser-irradiated glass microshells coated with polystyrene/metal layers seems to be dominated by hot spots. These are connected with filaments which are enhanced by hydrodynamic instability of the Rayleigh-Taylor type.

The Precision Phebus program, started in 1993, emphasizes a series of laser and target experiment objectives on the two-beam Phebus Nd-phosphate glass laser. Recently, three major objectives that are also very important issues for megajoule-class lasers have been met: First, the balance of the incident beam-to-beam 3ω power is shown to be in the range from 5 to 12% for 3-ns, 3ω-shaped pulses of reproducible high-energy shots; second, the smoothing uniformity of the laser energy deposited on the target, that is, the contrast of the spatial beam modulations, can be kept lower than 5%; and, finally, the tight control of the beam targeting leads to a pointing precision of less than 10 μrd on the target at the target chamber center (TCC) and of 80 μrd on X-ray sources located up to 3 cm from the TCC to improve the space- and time-resolved X-ray shadowgraphy techniques performed for target physics experiments such as implosion and hydrodynamical instability studies.

Analytical study of the linear stability of one-dimensional double layers in nonmagnetized plasmas based on the solution of the Vlasov–Poisson system is presented. Electromagnetic effects are not included. A self-consistent equilibrium electrostatic potential Φ0(z) that monotonically increases from a low level at z = − ∞ to a high level at z = + ∞ is assumed. We model this potential as a piecewise continuous function of z and we assume that Φ0(z) has constant values for − ∞ z ≤ 0 and L ≤ z < ∞, L being the thickness of the double layer. The BGK states for the Vlasov–Poisson system provide an explicit expression for the velocity distribution of the reflected electrons required for the particular double layer configuration. The stability of the double layers is studied via the linearized Vlasov and Poisson equations using the WKB approximation.

In inertial confinement fusion the target implosion non-uniformity is introduced by a driver beams’ illumination non-uniformity, a fuel target alignment error in a fusion reactor, the target fabrication defect, etc. For a steady operation of a fusion power plant the target implosion should be robust against the implosion non-uniformities. In this paper the requirement for the implosion uniformity is first discussed. The implosion uniformity should be less than a few percent. A study on the fuel hotspot dynamics is also presented and shows that the stagnating plasma fluid provides a significant enhancement of vorticity at the final stage of the fuel stagnation. Then non-uniformity mitigation mechanisms of the heavy-ion beam (HIB) illumination are also briefly discussed in heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF). A density valley appears in the energy absorber, and the large-scale density valley also works as a radiation energy confinement layer, which contributes to a radiation energy smoothing. In HIF a wobbling HIB illumination was also introduced to realize a uniform implosion. In the wobbling HIBs illumination, the illumination non-uniformity oscillates in time and space on a HIF target. The oscillating-HIB energy deposition may contribute to the reduction of the HIBs’ illumination non-uniformity by its smoothing effect on the HIB illumination non-uniformity and also by a growth mitigation effect on the Rayleigh–Taylor instability.

In the paper, we applied the paraxial region theory and Wentzel–-Kramers–-Brillouin approximation to study laser beam self-focusing in the interaction of laser and collisional plasma with periodical density ripple. The results have shown that, under the influence of collision nonlinear effect, laser presents stable self-focusing, self-defocusing, and oscillational self-focusing in the plasma. Besides, the parameters of plasma with periodical density ripple have a greater impact on the effect of self-defocusing and oscillational self-focusing than stable self-focusing. In certain conditions, beam self-defocusing and oscillational self-focusing would decline and even disappear, and stable self-focusing would further be strengthened. Hence, selecting a suitable periodic plasma system is advantageous for separating self-defocusing and oscillational self-focusing, and for the formation of a more stable collisional self-focusing.

A compact nanosecond pulsed X-ray source is described. The X-ray source consists of two important subassemblies: a high-voltage pulse generator and an X-ray diode. The high-voltage pulse generator is designed based on the principle of triple resonance circuit producing a high-voltage pulse across the X-ray diode with amplitude of up to 500 kV. The X-ray diode is a sealed transmission target X-ray tube. Its cathode is comb structure formed from thin tungsten sheets with thickness 50 µm, while its target is made of 100 µm titanium film. The X-ray dose at a distance of 20 cm from the diode is 20 mR per pulse, while the diode voltage is 512 kV. In the case, the full-width at half-maximum of the X-ray pulse is ~5 ns.

To increase X-ray photon number generated by laser-cluster interaction, it is important to understand the dependence of X-ray generation on cluster size. We carried out Xe K-shell X-ray generation using a conical nozzle with Xe clusters, the radius of which was controllable by adjusting the backing pressure. The experiment clarifies the result that the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number increases with increasing cluster radius from 8 to 12 nm, and saturates at the radius between 12 and 17 nm. We also investigated the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number dependence on laser intensity, and found that the threshold laser intensity of the Xe K-shell X-ray generation exists between 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1018 W/cm2.

We present the results of the experimental testing of the laser facility LAMBDA, created and built at the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center for generation of quasi-steady-state laser fields in microvolumes.

The facility includes: a single mode generator of reference radiation (RR) producing about 10 mJ energy in a pulse of controlled length from 3 to 30 ns; a target chamber with an input objective focusing the RR beam to a micron-size spot, and a 280-mm-diameter parabolic mirror with the focal length also of 270 mm; a two-stage iodine amplifier with the small signal gain coefficient 3·105 per one pass, to the input of which radiation from the target chamber formed by the (microobjective + parabolic mirror) system is applied; a phase conjugating device with the system for the selection of the phase-conjugated component, which allows us to realize the pulse compression in the amplifier stages, and to provide the compensation of the optical aberrations after the second pass amplification and focusing of high-power radiation into the microvolume; a complex for diagnostics of plasma and laser radiation parameters.

We use an Eulerian Vlasov code to study the efficient ion acceleration in dense targets by the ponderomotive force of a high-intensity circularly polarized laser beam, normally incident on a dense plasma. The code solves the one-dimensional relativistic Vlasov–Maxwell equations for both electrons and ions. We follow in details the mechanism of formation and evolution of a double-layer structure, where electrons are pushed steadily in the forward direction by the ponderomotive force of the laser beam, trapping an ion population, while an induced space charge electric field pulls ions behind them, forming a double-layer structure supported by the strong ponderomotive pressure of the intense laser beam. We consider the case of a high-density deuterium plasma with n/ncr = 100, where ncr is the critical density. Three cases are studied, by varying the width of the dense target and the intensity of the laser beam (with the normalized vector potential or quiver momentum a0 = 50 and a0 = 100), to follow the physical processes involved in the ion acceleration and the final formation of a neutral plasma jet ejected from the back of the target. We follow the transition from a situation where the laser pulse radiation pressure is acting on the double layer in the target, to a situation where below a given thickness a fraction of the laser energy is transmitted through the target. The absence of noise in the Eulerian Vlasov code allows us to follow accurately the evolution of the phase-space structures of the distribution functions.

Relativistic surface high harmonics, combined with the use of polarization gating, present a promising route towards intense single attosecond pulses. However, they impose stringent requirements on ultra-high laser contrast and are restricted by large intensity losses in real experiments. Here, we numerically demonstrate that by setting an optimal time delay in the polarization gating scheme, the intensity of the generated single attosecond pulses can become approximately 100 times stronger than that with nonoptimal time delay in the coherent synchrotron emission process. When a petawatt-class driving laser irradiates a solid target, an ultra-dense electron nanobunch and a strong space-charge sheath develop, and the accumulated electrostatic energy is only released in half of the laser cycle when this electron nanobunch moves backward. This process results in the emission of intense high harmonics. Our study provides a reliable method for developing bright attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses.

A physical-mathematical model for the development of the boundary instability of a spherical incompressible-liquid shell, with due regard for the ablation effect, is considered.
