Simulations of the interaction of very intense short pulse lasers with solid density plasmas have indicated that there may be very high magnetic fields and electron temperatures in the vicinity of the focal spot. We investigate the propagation of an incident electromagnetic wave under these conditions, both analytically and by means of a particle code, and show that the evanescence length of the wave field in a highly overdense plasma may be much greater than is usually supposed. This effect could be important in understanding the penetration of energy into the overdense region and the particle heating and acceleration which takes place there.

A two-dimensional simplified model of an HF chemical laser is introduced. Using an implicit finite difference scheme, the solution of two adjacent parallel streams with diffusion mixing and chemical reaction is generated. A contour of the mixing and reaction boundary is obtained without presupposition. The distribution of the HF(u) concentrations, gas temperature and the optical small signal gain (αu, J) on the flowing plane (X, Y) are presented. Compared with the solution solved directly from a set of Navier–Stokes equations, the results of these two methods agree with each other qualitatively. The influences of the different velocity, temperature (T0) and composition of the two streams on the small signal gain after the nozzle exit are investigated. It is interesting that for larger J with a fixed u, the peaks of αu, J—T0 profiles move towards higher T0. The computing method is simple and only a short computing time is needed.

The main goals of the German program are the study of key issues of inertial fusion with intense beams of heavy ions. The completion of the new heavy-ion synchrotron and storage ring facility SIS/ESR at GSI opens new directions for experimental investigations on beam dynamics at high intensity and on beam/target interaction. In addition, new accelerator scenarios will be investigated based on non-Liouvillean beam-handling techniques.

The intrinsically nonperturbative “vacuum persistence probability” P for e + e− production in the overlap region of a pair of high-intensity lasers is estimated in the context of three models, each of which adapt and simplify the exact Fradkin representation for the logarithm of the fermion determinant in the fields of the crossed lasers. In each case, one finds for P an expression resembling Schwinger's 1951 result for the probability of pair production in a constant electric field, proportional to an exponential factor which contains an essential singularity and hence does not admit a perturbative expansion about zero coupling. Qualitative estimates of these models suggest that realistic yields for this form of e + e− production must await lasers of intensity 1029 W/m2. The possibility of producing a quark–antiquark pair in this way is noted, in particular, with temporary, but large separations of the qq.

A study of the effects of photoionization of a laser-produced plasma has been carried out by modeling the fluorescence of resonance lines due to cascades. The photoionization source is the X-ray M-band emission of a laser-produced high-Z plasma and it perturbs a ground state He-like aluminum plasma. Simulations have been performed to study the conditions necessary to maximize the fluorescence and guide future experiments. A collisional-radiative model is used to determine the optimal temperature and density of the pumped plasma, while hydrodynamic models are used to produce realistic plasma gradients and explore the optimum time delay of the photopumping.

For real-time diffraction experiments in X-ray crystal research a simplified model is chosen to describe laser-generated plasmas. This enables a rough estimate of the optimum laser plasma parameters necessary to maximize the line emission of highly ionized species. Furthermore, the use of the hot electron spectrum of laser plasmas to generate ultrashort Kα-emission is discussed.

This article describes computer simulations of a longitudinal instability that affects induction linear accelerators for high-power ion beams. The instability is driven by axial bunching of ions when they interact with acceleration gaps connected to input transmission lines. The process is similar to the longitudinal resistive wall instability in continuous systems. Although bunching instabilities do not appear in existing induction linear accelerators for electrons, they may be important for proposed ion accelerators for heavy ion fusion. The simulation code is a particle-in-cell model that describes a drifting beam crossing discrete acceleration gaps with a self-consistent calculation of axial space charge forces. In present studies with periodic boundaries, the model predicts values for quantities such as the stabilizing axial velocity spread that are in good agreement with analytic theories. The simulations describe the nonlinear growth of the instability and its saturation with increased axial emittance. They show that an initially cold beam is subject to a severe disruption that drives the emittance well above the stabilized saturation levels. The simulation results confirm that axial space charge forces do not reduce axial beam bunching. In fact, space charge effects increase the axial velocity spread required for stability. With simple resistive driving circuits, the model predicts velocity spreads that are too high for heavy ion fusion applications. Several processes currently under study may mitigate this result, including advanced pulsed power switching methods, enhanced gap capacitance, and an energy spread impressed between individual beams of a multibeam transport system.

A detailed investigation of many aspects of the physics of laser–plasma interaction at very high laser intensities is required in order to assess the feasibility and the promise of the fast ignitor scheme for inertial confinement fusion. Relevant results, obtained in a series of experiments carried out at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton (UK) and at the Centre d'Etudes Atomique, Limeil Valenton (France), are presented and discussed here. In particular, the formation of plasma channels was observed following the propagation of relativistically intense, ps laser pulses through underdense plasmas. The channels persist long after the interaction, and their expansion has been measured. Efficient guiding of ultraintense laser pulses, both through preformed density channels and through solid guides, has been demonstrated. Finally, indication of collimated fast electron propagation through solid targets has been obtained from the observation of filamentary ionization tracks in laser irradiated solid targets.

Intense laser light incident on solid targets has been shown to be a prolific source of harmonics. High harmonic intensities are characterized by a power-law spectrum Pm~m−p, where p denotes a spectral decay index and m is the harmonic number. Across a wide range of light intensity and target plasma density, particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have shown p = 8/3, a value supported by the observation. However, the claim that this decay is universal has been contested and shown to break down in simulations when the incident light is P-polarized. Here weaker decays with p = 5/3 and at higher intensities p = 4/3 were observed. The distinction between the two regimes was attributed to the contribution to the spectrum from emission at the plasma frequency and its harmonics from Langmuir waves excited by the Brunel electrons generated when the incident light is P-polarized. In the present work, a single-particle model has been devised to lend support to a wide range of PIC data. The model incorporates a Langmuir electric field and is hybrid in the sense that we have made use of PIC output to guide our choice of field amplitudes in the Langmuir source. We find that the spectrum computed in this way shows generally satisfactory agreement with the corresponding PIC spectra, both in decay coefficient and spectral cut-off. At the highest intensities considered the emission from the convective bunching of electrons in high-amplitude Langmuir waves is itself superseded by Brunel electron bremsstrahlung and we have identified the regions of parameter space over which each of these sources is dominant. Interestingly, the same distinction has been drawn in a very different plasma regime where comparably complex spectra have been predicted in gamma-ray burst spectra from Langmuir turbulence produced in astrophysical jets.

The article presents the multigroup kinetic approximation of radiation transport in hohlraum systems. The view factor-based method of numerical solution is proposed. Its advantages are a detailed account of the problem geometry and accurate handling of the solution angular anisotropy and discontinuities. The method is computationally efficient and easily parallelizable. Coupled to the kinetic + hydro description of the wall dynamics, it represents a powerful tool for integrated investigation of the systems with strongly inhomogeneous optical properties.

High-temperature plasmas were produced by focusing 1·05 μm, 100 psec laser pulses onto Al layer targets at a mean irradiation of 3·1013 Watt/cm2. By means of simultaneous measurements of the thermal x-ray emission and the frequency-quadrupled laser pulse we observe a 20 ± 15 psec delay of the x-ray peak relative to the peak of the incident laser pulse. In addition, modulations on the trailing edge of the driving pulse appear strongly enhanced in the x-ray signature.

Thermal energy transport in laser-irradiated glass microshells coated with polystyrene/metal layers seems to be dominated by hot spots. These are connected with filaments which are enhanced by hydrodynamic instability of the Rayleigh-Taylor type.

A self-guided Gaussian laser pulse propagating in a non-uniform plasma channel is unstable to a plasma wave perturbation co-moving with the laser with its group velocity. The plasma wave amplitude has a maximum radial profile along the laser propagation axis. As the plasma wave propagates through a non-uniform plasma channel, the plasma wave perturbation causes focusing in the part of the laser that propagates with the electron density trough and defocusing in the part moving with the crest. This yields an axial gradient in the intensity of the laser and produces a ponderomotive force on the electrons. The ponderomotive force drives the plasma wave, which in turn makes the modulational instability grow. The growth rate of the modulational instability becomes larger with the increase in non-uniformity of a shallow plasma channel. In a deep cavitated plasma channel the growth rate of the modulational instability increases with the laser pulse amplitude.

In this work, a new analytical potential for studying ions in excited configurations is presented, which is built up from a parametric potential for ions in a ground state. It is used to calculate atomic magnitudes of special importance in plasmas such as total energies, energy levels, and transition energies, for ions in excited configurations. The results are successfully compared with those obtained with both self-consistent or analytical models.

Numerical analyses show that a 40% mixing inhomogeneity of the deuterium (D) and tritium (T) concentrations in a DT pellet still gives a sufficient fusion energy output in DT inertial confinement fusion (ICF), as long as the D and T total amounts are equal. This new result means that fusion energy output is rather insensitive to the inhomogeneous fuel mixing in the DT ICF pellet.

In order to calculate more generally the space-charge limited current between two points of different voltage, modern differential geometrical methods are applied. This problem was first treated by Child (1911) and later by Langmuir (1913). It is possible, for example, to account for effects due to more than one charge component as well as the influence of a neutral background gas (which causes ionization and scattering of charge carriers). A systematic derivation of the self-consistent representation based on a Hamilton theory for density functions is given, and solution methods are discussed. The concept is designed to investigate ion and electron diodes with very intense currents, but it may also be useful for treating space charge problems in a stationary plasma.

The experimental study of the plasma projectile acceleration in the laser-induced cavity pressure acceleration (LICPA) scheme is reported. In the experiment performed at the kilojoule PALS laser facility, the parameters of the projectile were measured using interferometry, a streak camera and ion diagnostics, and the measurements were supported by two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. It is shown that in the LICPA accelerator with a 200-J laser driver, a 4-μg gold plasma projectile is accelerated to the velocity of 140 km/s with the energetic acceleration efficiency of 15–19% which is significantly higher than those achieved with the commonly used ablative acceleration and the highest among the ones measured so far for any projectiles accelerated to the velocities ≥100 km/s. This achievement opens the possibility of creation and investigation of high-energy-density matter states with the use of moderate-energy lasers and may also have an impact on the development of the impact ignition approach to inertial confinement fusion.

To increase X-ray photon number generated by laser-cluster interaction, it is important to understand the dependence of X-ray generation on cluster size. We carried out Xe K-shell X-ray generation using a conical nozzle with Xe clusters, the radius of which was controllable by adjusting the backing pressure. The experiment clarifies the result that the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number increases with increasing cluster radius from 8 to 12 nm, and saturates at the radius between 12 and 17 nm. We also investigated the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number dependence on laser intensity, and found that the threshold laser intensity of the Xe K-shell X-ray generation exists between 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1018 W/cm2.
