At the time of his death in 1953 Orton had almost completed an extensive study of the biology of the three British species of Patella. Although certain aspects of the investigation were dealt with by collaborators and have already been published (Crewe, 1947 on parasites; Goodwin, 1950 on pigments; Jones, 1948 on ecology) most of the breeding and spawning data have been neither analysed nor published. With the knowledge that Orton's records contained the most complete information on breeding yet compiled for a littoral animal, and that these records had considerable bearing on the question of speciation in Patella, we have attempted to analyse and present those which are most complete.

A Lagrangian study was conducted in a eutrophic estuary (Guanabara Bay, Brazil) to investigate in situ plankton trophodynamics under the influence of the cold, nutrient-rich South Atlantic Coastal Water in a short-term temporal variability (scale of hours). We tested the hypothesis that the base of the plankton food web is composed of small cells and that microzooplankton is the main consumer of this assemblage. Samples of pico-, nano- and microplankton, as well as copepods, were collected during spring, when the entry of upwelling water in the Bay is commonly observed, and near the surface every 3 h during the 1-day sampling period. Potential predation of dinoflagellates, ciliates, copepod nauplii, copepodites and adult copepods was estimated based on predator-prey size relationships. The main trophic links in the Guanabara Bay food web for the period analysed were nanophytoplankton-copepods, nanophytoplankton-ciliates, and autotrophic dinoflagellates-heterotrophic dinoflagellates. According to microphytoplankton availability, adult copepods could not satisfy their food requirement, and nanophytoplankton represented an important supplementary food source. In fact, diel variations of nano- and microplankton biomass were opposite to that of copepods suggesting predation control by the latter on the former. The trophodynamics of Guanabara Bay, under the influence of upwelling water, resulted in marked differences from other eutrophic estuaries around the world.

During the present year tow-netting has been carried on with such continuity as the weather permitted, and the fish-ova and larvæ thereby obtained have been studied by Mr. S. D. Scott during the winter months, and by myself since the spring. While reserving a general account of the results until the close of the season, it seems advisable to deal now, in however preliminary a manner, with a few species, an addition to the existing knowledge of which may be found of immediate use by workers in the same field. I take this opportunity of expressing my indebtedness to Mr. Scott for observing certain eggs which I was obliged to leave at the Laboratory at a stage too little advanced for specific determination.

Lessepsian migrant Leiognathus klunzingeri is reported for the first time from the Adriatic Sea, substantially further north than its usual area of occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea. Morphometric and meristic characteristics of the specimen are provided. The possible explanations of this occurrence are discussed.

This is a report of the Cœlenterate plankton taken during the cruises of the Evadne in 1925, and investigated at the request of Professor A. D. Peacock. I am indebted to Miss Ann R. Sanderson, B.Sc., for considerable help in the identification of specimens.

Rapid fixing of skeletal muscle by a ‘freeze-clamp’ technique results in up to a 3-fold lower lactate, a slightly higher pyruvate concentration and a 2- to 4-fold decrease in lactate/pyruvate ratio, to the lowest value yet recorded for fish muscle, when compared with the more usual method of direct immersion in liquid nitrogen. This is attributed to the faster cooling rate of freeze-clamped muscle minimizing ‘sampling anoxia’. Immobilizing fish either by anaesthetic or stunning produces no significant change in metabolite levels. It is concluded that it is relatively easy to handle quiescent flatfish, but light anaesthesia ensures no muscular activity.

The sediment surface within the Osbornia belt of a mangal on Pulau Hoga, Tukang Besi Islands, Sulawesi, Indonesia, is dominated inter alia by deposit-feeding gastropod molluscs at a mean density of some 230 ind m−2 although, unusually, species of Cerithidea do not occur. Densities of the two most numerous species, the potamidid mud-whelk Terebralia sulcata and the Cerithidea-like cerithiid mud-creeper Cerithium coralium, are inversely correlated, although the species occurred together in 42% of quadrat samples. Within and beyond the normal range of field densities of each species (C. coralium mean 153 m−2; T. sulcata mean 75 m−2) there was no evidence of intraspecific depression of feeding rate, as assessed by the production of faecal pellets, although this was significantly reduced in the occasional very high density aggregations of C. coralium (>1100 m−2). The presence of the larger T. sulcata did appear to have a strong inhibitory effect on feeding in C. coralium; the converse, however, could not be demonstrated. Abundances of Terebralia palustris and C. coralium were also inversely correlated where the two co-occurred.

The taxonomy of pedunculate cirripedes belonging to the genus Pollicipes has essentially remained unchanged since Charles Darwin described them in his exhaustive work on the Cirripedia. This genus includes three species of stalked barnacles: Pollicipes pollicipes in the north-eastern Atlantic, P. polymerus in the north-eastern Pacific and P. elegans in the central-eastern Pacific. However, a population genetics analysis of P. pollicipes suggested the presence of a putative cryptic species collected from the Cape Verde Islands in the central-eastern Atlantic. This study examines the morphology of these genetically divergent specimens and compares them with that of representative Atlantic samples of the biogeographically closely related P. pollicipes and with the poorly described P. elegans. Molecular data, including mitochondrial COX1 and nuclear ribosomal interspaces sequences, were obtained for all species of the genus Pollicipes. Morphological distinctiveness, diagnostic characters, congruent divergence level and monophyletic clustering, at both nuclear and mitochondrial loci support the taxonomic status of this new species, Pollicipes darwini.

A new final fish host (Stromateus brasiliensis) for the digenean parasite Monascus filiformis from the continental shelf of Patagonia Argentina in the South-western Atlantic Ocean is reported. This demersal-pelagic fish (commonly denominated pampanito) is exclusively a jellyfish consumer. It is well known that larval stages of Monascus filiformis mostly use medusae as secondary hosts. Therefore, the pampanito likely acquires this parasite when it predates upon some species of parasitized medusae in the area. This work improves the knowledge about the final hosts of this parasite and infers which species of medusa may be involved in their life cycle.

Renibacterium sp. QD1, a bacteria strain capable of hydrolysing chitosan, was isolated from the homogenate of small crabs. An extracellular chitosanase, Csn-A, was purified from the QD1 fermentation broth. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity, with a yield of eight-fold, 67% recovery and a specific activity of 1575 U/mg proteins. The molecular weight of Csn-A was estimated to be 26.1 kDa by SDS-PAGE. Unlike other chitosanases, the purified Csn-A displayed maximal activity at a pH range of 5.3–6.5, and it was stable in a broad pH range of 5.0–10.0. The optimum temperature for chitosanlytic activity was 55°C. The enzyme activity was strongly stimulated by Mn2+ but inhibited by Fe3+, Cu2+, Al3+, Zn2+ and SDS. TLC analysis demonstrated that Csn-A hydrolysed N-deacetylated polymeric glucosamines into chito-biose and -triose in an endo-type manner. The amino acid seuquence of Csn-A showed close identity with an uncharacterized chitosanase of strain ATCC33209.

The regeneration of cirri was followed in two common intertidal barnacle species, following non-lethal predation by an intertidal teleost. While >50% of damaged Semibalanus balanoides individuals showed some degree of cirral re-growth within 16 days, this level of regeneration was not reached in Chthamalus montagui until 32 days after removal of the cirri. Full re-growth of cirri required at least two moults in both species.

Texperiments are described which indicate that there is a physiological problem quite apartfrom the chemical problem of luminescence in the secretion of Malacocephalus Icevis(Lowe). The luminiferous substances are present in granules, which behave as though each were bounded bya membrane whose permeabilities resemble those of a typical cell, but differ from a cell in that they have little or no power of recovery from adverse conditions.

For optimal luminescence they require (i) a medium of a certain osmotic pressure,(ii) a certain range of alkalinity, (iii) a certain range of temperature, and (iv)abundant oxygen. Sea-water is not necessary for luminescence.

If they are exposed to extremes of acidity or alkalinity, or of hypotonic or hypertonic solutions, irreversible changes rapidly set in in the membrane of the granule, whereby the power of luminescence is lost.

In artificial conditions the rapid fading of the light from the initial brilliance is probably due to an increasing acidity caused by the accumulation of the products of oxidation.

Opisthoteuthis hardyi was originally described from a single male specimen caught near Shag Rocks (north-west of South Georgia) and no further specimens have been attributed to this species. During research fishing on the Patagonian slope to the south-east of the Falkland Islands 33 specimens of Opisthoteuthis were caught at depths ranging from 630 to 1391 m. Morphological measurements indicated that these specimens were conspecific to the holotype of O. hardyi. The mitochondrial gene 16S rDNA was sequenced from two of these specimens and compared with a published sequence of the holotype and other Opisthoteuthidae to confirm the morphological data. This extends the geographical and bathymetric range of the species, which spans the Antarctic Polar Front. We also expand the original description, providing details of the digestive system and of the female reproductive system, with preliminary estimates of fecundity.

Ucides cordatus is a semi-terrestrial crab and key species endemic to mangrove areas of eastern Americas. In North-eastern Brazil this crab holds a major socio-economic function for artisanal fisheries, as in the São Francisco River Estuary (10°30′27″S 36°23′45″W). Nevertheless, decreases in this species’ stock have been reported since 2000, requiring assessments of the crab population for conservation and management purposes. This study aims at assessing the population status and the fishery potential of this species in the mangroves of this estuary and suggests strategies for its fishery and conservation, according to the guidelines of the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use. Six different sites established in 30 km2 of mangroves were sampled, with the density of U. cordatus burrows estimated to evaluate the population structure using the measure of burrow diameters. Results show that the crab mean burrow size was 56.82 (±12.2) mm and that the medium-size crabs (40–70 mm) are the most abundant. The total mean crab density was 1.2 crabs m−2, from which the density of crabs in commercial size (0.85 ± 0.55 crabs m−2) was significantly higher than those in non-commercial size (0.35 ± 0.21 burrow m−2). These mangroves showed a high potential for the crab fishery, with an immediate extractive potential (IEP) of 71.2% and future extractive potential (FEP) of 28.8%. Nevertheless, a lower crab density, probably due to high crab mortality, mangrove deforestation for shrimp farming and high fishery pressure, is a limiting factor for local fishery. We conclude that mangrove areas more appropriate for U. cordatus fishery (extractive areas) show higher mean crab size, IEP and density of commercial crabs, wherein a fixed exploitation rate or/and a fixed escapement rule should be considered. Exclusion areas, intended for the conservation, show lower values of these population parameters and higher FEP, wherein the fishery should be prohibited. These management strategies should also be considered in other Brazilian mangrove areas showing similar crab population structure, thus contributing to the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use.

A trade waterproofing of sisal rope had still some effect after 3 days in sea water, the untreated being four-fifths saturated in 1 hr.

Treating manila, sisal and coir rope with Cuprinol or tar increases the wet weight at the most only slightly as less water is taken up than without preservative.

Water equilibrium is not attained till long after the B.S.I, specification test period for waterproofing sisal rope, but some effect of waterproofing may be distinguished up to perhaps 3 days.

On cotton netting copper naphthenate preservatives were most durable in a clean sea-water basin, but Dr Olie's method with cutch and ammoniacal copper sulphate ran them close and is cheaper. The best lasted 9 months as against untreated 5½ months.

On trawl twines the British Columbia grade of Cuprinol, a proprietary mixture containing copper naphthenate, was the best of those tried, and the twines lasted 16 months as against almost 9 for untreated manila.

On thin sisal rope six copper preparations are still under test.

Samples of branched and unbranched forms of the marine thecate hydroid Aglaophenia pluma (L.) (Hydrozoa, Plumulariidae) were collected from the western and eastern sides respectively of Carmarthen Bay (South Wales). Tissue from various colonies of each type was cleaned of epifauna and homogenized for horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Useful results were obtained for 14 enzyme loci coding for a total of 11 different enzymes. Eleven of the 14 loci showed no common allele between the branched and unbranched forms. Nei's genetic identity was estimated as 0·18 and genetic distance as 1·7. Such a high level of genetic differentiation between morphotypes provides strong evidence that the populations are reproductively isolated and should be regarded as distinct species. It is suggested that the branched form may be Aglaophenia parvula Bale, a species until recently better known from the southern hemisphere. Morphological distinctions between the two species are discussed.

Sagittal otolith morphology and otolith shape of two megrim species, Lepidorhombus boscii and Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, were compared using descriptive morphological characters and Wavelet shape coefficients. Differences in otolith shape were examined by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The first discriminant axis explained 66.6% of the variation between the groups, and the second axis 28.5%. Otolith classification based on LDA showed that in 79.5% of cases an otolith can be correctly classified based only on its shape. Relationships between otolith morphometric parameters (length and width) and fish size (total length) were described by fitting simple linear regression models. For L. boscii the highest positive correlation was found between right otolith width and total body length (R2 = 0.82), and for L. whiffiagonis between left otolith length and total body length (R2 = 0.39).

Archinome storchi sp. nov. is described as the second species of the family Archinomidae. The specimens were collected from a hydrothermal vent site in 2212 m depth on the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge at 37° S. It differs from Archinome rosacea mainly in the position of the anus, the first appearance of branchiae and the length of the nuchal cirrus. Additional specimens of A. rosacea collected from hydrothermal vent locations in the North Fiji Basin and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge were used for morphological comparison. A synoptic table of characters is given for A. rosacea and A. storchi sp. nov. together with a list of records for Archinomidae compiled from the literature.

Ports have long been considered ‘high-risk’ areas for the introduction of non-native species (NNS) and should therefore be a focus of NNS monitoring. The industrial nature of active ports can, however, provide various problems when attempting to carry out monitoring programmes. Current methodologies designed to identify NNS and to describe fouling communities have not been developed specifically for use in active ports and can encounter a number of issues when used in these environments. Here, two surveys were developed and trialled within an active port in South Wales, UK, designed to describe fouling communities, identify NNS and overcome some of the major limitations to conducting surveys within ports. Over a 6-month period, fouling communities dominated by solitary ascidians developed in each survey. Seven NNS were identified, mostly species already recorded in the 1950s, including the Mediterranean crab Brachynotus sexdentatus, and the more recently introduced Japanese skeleton shrimp Caprella mutica. Each survey was evaluated independently with respect to key factors, including the ability to detect NNS and practical aspects of using these survey methods in an applied context. We conclude that whilst each survey can function independently, the use of both survey types in conjunction offers the most robust solution to identifying NNS and describing wider fouling communities within active ports. This research has implications for the future monitoring and management of NNS within UK ports.

The present study enhances knowledge of the biodiversity of diatoms in Chuuk, Micronesia following our 2018 study on the seaweed-associated diatoms. We collected planktonic samples of diatoms from five sites of reef flats using a 20 μm mesh net, and two samples of seaweeds with epiphytes by hand from an islet on the barrier reef. In addition, the seaweed-associated diatoms from our 2018 study were analysed using scanning electron microscopy. A total of 109 diatom taxa are documented in the present study. Of these, 70 species were from net samples, and 39 species from the seaweed-associated diatoms. Thirty-one species are newly recorded from Micronesian waters. Most taxa are benthic or tychoplanktonic; euplanktonic diatoms were rare. The occurrence of benthic diatoms from the water column might be related to the Chuuk environmental conditions which include shallow water, strong light intensity and high grazing pressure, to which benthic diatoms seem to be able to better adapt than planktonic diatoms.
