The digestive system of the thalassinidean mud-shrimp Upogebia stellata was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Within the lumen of the midgut both filamentous and rod-shaped bacteria were observed. The hindgut microbial populations were dominated by dense mats of epimural rod-shaped bacteria. The gut contents were often dominated by diatoms but also contained bacteria, dinoflagellates, plant and algal fragments. Direct bacterial counts by epifluorescence microscopy along the length of the gut revealed a slight decrease in numbers within the midgut moving from the anterior to the posterior regions, and then a dramatic rise in numbers within the hindgut. Numbers decreased again in the posterior regions of the hindgut. Common in the transient / resident samples (bacterial population when gut contents were present) were enterobacteria and an unidentified fermenter conforming to an isolate named X-ferm. However, nearly 30% of the bacterial isolates remained unidentified. The resident-only bacterial isolates from the gut (determined when the gut was empty) were dominated by the X-ferm bacteria and to a lesser extent by the genera Vibrio and Aeromonas. With respect to the enzyme capabilities of the gut bacteria, the resident-only collection of bacterial isolates showed much higher levels of amylase, cellulase, chitinase, protease and lipase activity than the transient/resident bacterial isolate collections, suggesting that the indigenous bacteria are likely to play a significant role in the digestion of the gut contents. Thalassinidean shrimps are likely to play an important role in the breakdown of plant and detrital material, and the recycling of nutrients in marine benthic systems.

Invasive algae can have substantial negative impacts in their invaded ranges. One widely cited mechanism that attempts to explain how invasive plants and algae are often able to spread quickly, and even become dominant in their invaded ranges, is the Enemy Release Hypothesis. This study assessed the feeding behaviours of two species of gastropod herbivore from populations exposed to the invasive alga Sargassum muticum for different lengths of time. Feeding trials, consisting of both choice and no-choice, showed that the herbivores from older stands (35–40 years established) of S. muticum were more likely to feed upon it than those taken from younger (10–19 years established) stands. These findings provide evidence in support of the ERH, by showing that herbivores consumed less S. muticum if they were not experienced with it. These findings are in accordance with the results of other feeding-trials with S. muticum, but in contrast to research that utilizes observations of herbivore abundance and diversity to assess top-down pressure. The former tend to validate the ERH, and the latter typically reject it. The potential causes of this disparity are discussed, as are the importance of palatability, herbivore species and time-since-invasion when considering research into the ERH. This study takes an important, yet neglected, approach to the study of invasive ecology.

The worldwide population of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) encompasses seven subpopulations among the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It has experienced declines across parts of its distribution, with the subpopulation of the South-west Atlantic listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List. The main threats to this subpopulation include its interaction with fisheries, coastal development, pollution and climate change. In this study, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from 52 leatherback turtles in Brazil and combined these with published data from other Atlantic Ocean rookeries. The haplotype diversities of the Atlantic population rookeries ranged from 0.112 to 0.533 and are not directly proportional to current rookery sizes. The Brazilian rookery, despite recording low nest numbers per year, had the second-highest haplotype diversity among all Atlantic rookeries (h = 0.532). A mixed-stock analysis revealed that the South American pelagic aggregate is primarily composed of individuals from West Africa (84%), with contributions from the North Atlantic rookeries (14%). Leatherback turtles appear to have a complex phylogeographic pattern, showing evidence of multiple colonization events and a lack of isolation by distance. Our novel dataset, based on DNA sequences of 695 base pairs, will provide baseline data needed to understand population dynamics in the region, building comprehensive population assessments to support and develop management strategies. Having both the only known regular rookery in the South-west Atlantic, and a mixed-origin foraging area for the species along its coast, Brazil has a key role in the conservation of the leatherback turtle.

The occurrence of 19 cetacean species along the German North Sea coastline as well as the lower reaches of the major rivers discharging into the German Bight is reviewed for the period 1604–2017 based on records of dead animals, either stranded dead or put to death. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is considered the most abundant and only native species in German coastal and riverine waters. Based on written sources its presence can be traced back to at least 1651, although with statistical data only available from 1990. Finds of further 18 species have been documented: white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), killer whale (Orcinus orca), beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), narwhal (Monodon monoceros), Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens), northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus), sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). This review corrects several false species assignments earlier introduced in literature based on incorrect scientific or ambiguous German vernacular names and recovers lost records of beluga whale, northern bottlenose whale, sperm whale and fin whale.

The examination of a collection of nudibranchs (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) obtained during several expeditions to international waters off Newfoundland, North Atlantic, revealed the presence of rare species, new records for the area, and an undescribed species of Tritonia (described herein). This includes the first record of Dendronotus niveus Ekimova, Korshunova, Schepetov, Neretina, Sanamyan and Martynov, 2015 from the Atlantic Ocean and numerous specimens of the rare species Doridoxa ingolfiana Bergh, 1899, which is here redescribed. Other species collected are Flabellina cf. salmonacea (Couthouy, 1838), Dendronotus frondosus (Ascanius, 1774), Dendronotus robustus A. E. Verrill, 1870, Aldisa zetlandica (Alder & Hancock, 1854), Onchidoris bilamellata (Linnaeus, 1767), Colga villosa (Odhner, 1907) as well as an unidentified species of Aeolidiella. Anatomical characteristics and genetic barcode data are used to identify the species whenever it was possible. Ecological data, including substrate, associated fauna and bathymetric range are provided.

This paper describes a new species in the genus Parametopella (Amphipoda: Stenothoidae), P. antholobae sp. nov., collected among the tentacles of the sea anemone Antholoba achates, found in shallow water near Coquimbo, Chile. A key to all Parametopella species is provided. The type specimen of the superficially similar species Parametopa alaskensis (Holmes) was studied; that species remains in Parametopa.

Rapid fixing of skeletal muscle by a ‘freeze-clamp’ technique results in up to a 3-fold lower lactate, a slightly higher pyruvate concentration and a 2- to 4-fold decrease in lactate/pyruvate ratio, to the lowest value yet recorded for fish muscle, when compared with the more usual method of direct immersion in liquid nitrogen. This is attributed to the faster cooling rate of freeze-clamped muscle minimizing ‘sampling anoxia’. Immobilizing fish either by anaesthetic or stunning produces no significant change in metabolite levels. It is concluded that it is relatively easy to handle quiescent flatfish, but light anaesthesia ensures no muscular activity.

At the time of his death in 1953 Orton had almost completed an extensive study of the biology of the three British species of Patella. Although certain aspects of the investigation were dealt with by collaborators and have already been published (Crewe, 1947 on parasites; Goodwin, 1950 on pigments; Jones, 1948 on ecology) most of the breeding and spawning data have been neither analysed nor published. With the knowledge that Orton's records contained the most complete information on breeding yet compiled for a littoral animal, and that these records had considerable bearing on the question of speciation in Patella, we have attempted to analyse and present those which are most complete.

It has been shown (1, 2) that the capacity for building up visual conditioned responses is common to many types of fish when the unconditioned stimulus used as the basis for the “conditioning” is food. Preliminary work at Plymouth, using the fish Blennius gattorugine, showed that was possible that a knowledge of wave-length discrimination in that species might be acquired by the now familiar method of “conditioning” to an electric shock. This work was continued when I came to Cullercoats, and six specimens were used which were sent from Plymouth in 1929. All of these died within a short space of time during the succeeding winter months, owing to the intense cold. It was therefore necessary to restrict the investigation to Blennius pholis L., which is both plentiful and hardy at Cullercoats. Some progress had already been made and in Part II (2) it was intimated that an analysis would be made of the capacity for wavelength discrimination in Blennius pholis using an electric shock as the unconditioned stimulus. The present paper gives the results of that enquiry as far as it was taken.

Parasites occurred on Erythrops serrata (G. O. Sars) and E. elegans (G. O. Sars) caught in the Clyde sea area and were identified tentatively as species of Thalassomyces, belonging to the Ellobiopsidae (Mauchline, 1968). Wim Vader of the Biological Station, Espegrend, Norway, however, on seeing the drawing of the parasite published by me pointed out that it was more probably a species of choniostomatid copepod. The parasites have now been re-examined and compared with Hansen's (1897) descriptions of these copepods.

Nebalia mediterranea sp. nov. (Crustacea, Leptostraca) is described from the Aegean coast of Turkey and Northern Cyprus. The new species is closely related to other sympatric species in the eastern Mediterranean, N. strausi and N. kocatasi, according to general body appearance. The new species differs, however, from other Nebalia species in having a rostrum about 2.5 times as long as wide, the antennular scale is clearly more than twice as long as wide, the fourth article of the antennule has only one short thick distal spine, the third article of the antenna has three similar spine-like setae on external lateral face, the first article of the second maxilla endopod is 1.2 times as long as the second article, the exopod of the second maxilla is longer than the first article of the endopod, pleonites 5–7 have distally rounded to slightly truncated denticles along posterior dorsal borders, the protopod of pleopod 4 has 4 serrations along posterior border, and the terminal seta of the uropods is about 1.8 the length of rami.

The increasing market demand for Glyptocidaris crenularis shapes its great potential for aquaculture. Temperature is an important factor affecting gonad production and quality of sea urchins. Therefore, it is essential and valuable to carry out an evaluation of the temperature effects on gonad production and quality in G. crenularis before potential aquaculture. Here, we investigated the long-term effects of temperature on gonad production, colour and flavour in G. crenularis. There was no significant difference of test diameter, height and body weight between the sea urchins in high (16–23°C) and low (12–16°C) temperatures (P > 0.05). Glyptocidaris crenularis showed significantly higher gonad production and index in high temperature and in low temperature (P < 0.05). L*, a*, b* readings were slightly higher in the low temperature groups, although no significant difference was found (P > 0.05). Subjective colour and flavour ratings found that G. crenularis in the low temperature group showed significantly better colour (P = 0.003) and flavour (P < 0.001) than those in the high temperature group. The present study provides valuable and insightful information into the establishing G. crenularis aquaculture.

The Lutrariidae are large lamellibranchs which burrow deeply in bottom-deposits on the shore and in shallow water. The foot is relatively weak, and they live permanently buried 30 cm or so beneath the surface, maintaining connexion with the overlying water through their long siphons, which are united in a common sheath for practically their whole length. The commonest British species, Lutraria lutraria (L.) is found at low-water mark on shores of muddy sand, and offshore its siphons are sometimes taken by the dredge or grab. Another species, L. magna (da Costa) is more local, and appears to inhabit muddy deposits near the mouths of estuaries. It is a southern form, being occasionally found on the south and west coasts of the British Isles, and, like L. lutraria, its range extends southward to the Mediterranean.

This is a report of the Cœlenterate plankton taken during the cruises of the Evadne in 1925, and investigated at the request of Professor A. D. Peacock. I am indebted to Miss Ann R. Sanderson, B.Sc., for considerable help in the identification of specimens.

The taxonomy of pedunculate cirripedes belonging to the genus Pollicipes has essentially remained unchanged since Charles Darwin described them in his exhaustive work on the Cirripedia. This genus includes three species of stalked barnacles: Pollicipes pollicipes in the north-eastern Atlantic, P. polymerus in the north-eastern Pacific and P. elegans in the central-eastern Pacific. However, a population genetics analysis of P. pollicipes suggested the presence of a putative cryptic species collected from the Cape Verde Islands in the central-eastern Atlantic. This study examines the morphology of these genetically divergent specimens and compares them with that of representative Atlantic samples of the biogeographically closely related P. pollicipes and with the poorly described P. elegans. Molecular data, including mitochondrial COX1 and nuclear ribosomal interspaces sequences, were obtained for all species of the genus Pollicipes. Morphological distinctiveness, diagnostic characters, congruent divergence level and monophyletic clustering, at both nuclear and mitochondrial loci support the taxonomic status of this new species, Pollicipes darwini.

Epimeriidae is an amphipod family with a worldwide distribution. A new species was found from the Tasman Sea at a depth of 12 m depth and described in detail. Epimeria norfanzi sp. nov. can be distinguished from other Epimeria by a combination of the following characters: coxal plates 1–3 ventrally rounded; protrusion of coxa 5 reaching the distal end of epimeral plate 2; and urosomite 1 with dorsal keel, telson not cleft. This new species increases the number of Pacific Epimeria species to ten. A brief synopsis of the Pacific Epimeria species is given and a key provided.

The diversity and distribution of polychaete species under the families Nereididae, Syllidae and Eunicidae in sub-tidal fouling assemblage was studied by submerging wood as test substratum. Wooden panels were fitted onto a raft and submerged in Kudankulam coastal waters (south east coast of India) in pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons from May 2003 to July 2005. Panels (in replicate) were retrieved from the raft at 15-day intervals. A total of 24 polychaete species belonging to the three families were identified from the test panels. Perinereis cultrifera, Platynereis dumerilii, Syllis variegata, Syllis truncata, and Eunice australis were the dominant species observed on the test panels. The abundance of major polychaete group was varied considerably between the panel series submerged in May 2003 (post-monsoon), November 2003 (monsoon) and July 2004 (pre-monsoon). The major difference in the polychaete community structure was the low abundance of both nereidids on pre-monsoon season panels and the eunicids on monsoon and post-monsoon season panels.

The present study undertaken in the largest coastal lagoon of Asia, Chilika, deals with monthly monitoring of benthic foraminifera assemblages in terms of distribution pattern, diversity and variations in taxonomic composition spanning over a period of 20 months. In total, 13 species of benthic foraminifera represented by eight families were identified in the lagoon. The stations in the Southern sector of the lagoon showed relatively low foraminifera abundance yet high diversity whereas higher abundance and lower diversity were observed in stations located in the Central sector which indicates the spatial patterning of the assemblage. Live foraminifera abundance was sparse in the study area indicating the stressed nature of the lagoon environment. The dissolved nutrient concentration of bottom water reflected significant seasonal variation. The stressed nature of the lagoon is further indicated by the dominance of the genus Ammonia across the inner sectors of the lagoon, a genus known to inhabit impacted habitats. Overall these data can serve as a baseline proxy for understanding palaeontological assemblages of foraminifera in similar shallow-water settings globally.

Sagittal otolith morphology and otolith shape of two megrim species, Lepidorhombus boscii and Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, were compared using descriptive morphological characters and Wavelet shape coefficients. Differences in otolith shape were examined by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The first discriminant axis explained 66.6% of the variation between the groups, and the second axis 28.5%. Otolith classification based on LDA showed that in 79.5% of cases an otolith can be correctly classified based only on its shape. Relationships between otolith morphometric parameters (length and width) and fish size (total length) were described by fitting simple linear regression models. For L. boscii the highest positive correlation was found between right otolith width and total body length (R2 = 0.82), and for L. whiffiagonis between left otolith length and total body length (R2 = 0.39).

Ports have long been considered ‘high-risk’ areas for the introduction of non-native species (NNS) and should therefore be a focus of NNS monitoring. The industrial nature of active ports can, however, provide various problems when attempting to carry out monitoring programmes. Current methodologies designed to identify NNS and to describe fouling communities have not been developed specifically for use in active ports and can encounter a number of issues when used in these environments. Here, two surveys were developed and trialled within an active port in South Wales, UK, designed to describe fouling communities, identify NNS and overcome some of the major limitations to conducting surveys within ports. Over a 6-month period, fouling communities dominated by solitary ascidians developed in each survey. Seven NNS were identified, mostly species already recorded in the 1950s, including the Mediterranean crab Brachynotus sexdentatus, and the more recently introduced Japanese skeleton shrimp Caprella mutica. Each survey was evaluated independently with respect to key factors, including the ability to detect NNS and practical aspects of using these survey methods in an applied context. We conclude that whilst each survey can function independently, the use of both survey types in conjunction offers the most robust solution to identifying NNS and describing wider fouling communities within active ports. This research has implications for the future monitoring and management of NNS within UK ports.
