The unicellular sporophyte phase of the filamentous green alga, Acrosiphonia (Codiolales), is endophytic in the bladed red alga, Mazzaella splendens in southern British Columbia, Canada. Since endophyte maturity coincides with decreased host abundance (winter storms dislodge Mazzaella blades), many endophytes lose their host before zoospore release has occurred. We investigated whether the endophytes can reach reproductive maturity within decaying host tissue (drift blades) or as free-living entities once their host has disappeared. We demonstrate that both occur. Suspension of M. splendens blades, colonized by the endophyte phase of Acrosiphonia, in seawater tanks in winter, resulted in the germination and growth of filamentous Acrosiphonia plants (gametophytes) in spring. Net primary productivity of 132·2 g dry wt/m2/mo was estimated by harvesting total Acrosiphonia biomass after a one-month growing season. An estimate of Acrosiphonia survivorship from zoospore to macroscopic adult gametophyte (0·01–0·89%), is in close approximation with kelp spore survivorship to microscopic gametophyte (0·005–0·1%), but is 102–105 times higher than kelp survivorship from spore to macroscopic adult sporophyte. Differential survivorship in the field and in experimental tanks and among different study sites can be explained by variable mortality factors for spores and germlings and Acrosiphonia's success in colonizing highly disturbed environments.

Specimens of twaite shad, Alosa fallax were sampled from commercial purse seiners and trammel netters in Izmir Bay during November and December 2007. A total of 287 prey items from 14 taxa from 208 stomachs were recorded. The primary food of twaite shad was found to be fish, especially anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, which was the most frequent (%F = 66.11) and abundant (%N = 63.64) prey item, and also had the highest percentage by weight (%W = 81.91). Decapoda, Isopoda, Ostracoda and Copepoda (Calanus spp., Candocia armata, Temora stylifera from Calanoida and Corycaeus spp. from Cyclopodia), were recorded occasionally with low values for all indices. The study showed that in the Aegean Sea Alosa fallax is a predator of small pelagic fish, E. encrasicolus, A. boyeri, S. pilchardus, and some crustaceans. Benthopelagic P. acarne and demersal S. hepatus were first recorded in diet of twaite shad.

The lesser argentine, Argentina sphyraena L., is a Mauretanian-Mediterranean-Boreal species extending from about 68° N. off the Norwegian coast to 25° N. off Spanish West Africa. It is most commonly caught on the offshore continental shelf in depths between 50 and 100 fm where average sea temperatures of 6° and 17°C are encountered at the northern and southern limits respectively of the species geographical range. Larger, older fish are taken in deeper water, and occurrences inshore and at depths less than 50 fm are usually associated with the presence of deep trenches over 50 fm.

Anchor-dredge samples of the benthos in Weymouth Bay and Poole Bay were taken after the severe 1962–63 winter to ascertain what changes in the fauna had occurred. The same station positions as had been previously sampled in 1958 and 1959 were re-sampled in 1963–64 and the results from each Bay compared.

Most species had survived the previous winter, when sea temperatures had probably been at 3° or below for about a month, but populations of the bivalve molluscs Venus verrucosa and Venerupis rhomboides, previously common in the area, had suffered severe mortalities, none being taken in the 1963–64 samples. The brittle star Acrocnida brachiata had also disappeared from the samples, and many other invertebrates appeared to have declined in numbers. Two cold-water species, Spisula elliptica and Buccinum undatum, showed if anything a slight increase, perhaps reflecting colder sea temperatures over the past few years. Crepidula fornicata also showed an increase in numbers.

Mortalities were not necessarily of species close to the limits of their range, some of the latter having survived with no noticeable decline in numbers.

Natural abundance, 13C/12C ratios (δ13C) of Californian sea hares, Aplysia californica, (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia) were measured for comparison with the animals preferred red algal diets, Plocamium cartilagineum and Laurenciapacifica. Isotopic compositions of animals collected from around Santa Catalina Island, did not reflect those of the favoured red algal diets, nor the majority of algal species found in the field. However, animals held in seawater tanks and fed diets with a constant carbon isotopic composition exhibited δ13C values similar to their food. Fast turnover tissue, such as the muscle tissue of actively growing juveniles or egg masses laid by adults, showed δ13C values within ±2‰ of the algal diet. Slow turnover tissue, such as the muscle tissue of large adults, reflected the diet over several months. Stable carbon isotope ratios thus proved a useful tool to clarify the extent to which specialized feeding in A. californica can occur upon algae which are only moderately to rarely common.

The group of primitive Annelids Dinophilus comprises some eight or nine species. They are remarkable for the fact that some show a well marked sexual dimorphism, in which the male is rudimentary, without any mouth or digestive tract, while in others the sexes are the same size and exhibit no signs of this dimorphism. The group as a class, therefore, is readily divisible into two subdivisions, in one of which all the species are sexually dimorphic, unpigmented, while in the other they are highly pigmented, a bright red, and are sexually monomorphic. The former may be called the Leu-codinophilidae, while the latter may be called the Erythrodinophilidae.

A new hand-held corer for meiofaunal sampling and vertical profile investigation was developed. Its design and use prevents problems connected with core compression caused by the use of a plunger for core extrusion as generally applied in common coring techniques. This represents an advantage when meiofauna vertical profiles are investigated. A comparison between vertical profiles obtained from the newly developed corer and from commonly used corers shows that non-extrusive techniques significantly reduce sediment core compression.

I am pleased and honoured to have been asked to give the first of the lectures in memory of Dr Leslie Cooper. I was especially moved by the thought that the invitation was made knowing that I should almost certainly choose Gaia as the topic of my lecture. I know that many of you, especially biologists, think that the Gaia hypothesis is either trivial and untestable or else a mere reiteration of conventional wisdom in poetic terms. Hardly a topic with which to commemorate Leslie Cooper's memory.

You will be relieved to know that although Gaia is the theme of my talk, I shall try not to be overly partisan or dogmatic. My objective is to use Gaia theory to illustrate a top-down approach to earth and life science and try to contrast it with the bottom-up approach which is conventional in the earth and life sciences.

The powers conferred on the Board of Trade, under the Sea Fisheries Regulation Act of 1888, to create, upon the application of a County or Borough Council, a local Fisheries District, and to provide for the constitution of a Local Fisheries Committee for the regulation of the sea fisheries carried on within the district, have been requisitioned by the majority of the Councils of the maritime counties of England and Wales, and at the present time Fisheries Districts and Fisheries Committees are constituted around nearly the whole coast line, the Committees having jurisdiction over all fishing carried on within the three-mile limit. The only portion of coast still unprovided for is that which lies in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, between Happisburg and Dovercourt.

The Azorean seabed is depauperate in terms of bivalve species richness, there being only between ~70 and 80 recorded to date, most being sub-tidal and generally lacking of specialists. Analysis of large numbers (>3200) of Azorean bivalve shells has revealed that, overall, each species is only ~50% the shell length size of Mediterranean conspecifics. Thus, although Azorean bivalve size may be a consequence of decreasing latitude (Bergmann's Rule), the islands are located at approximately the same latitude as the Mediterranean (and are influenced by those waters) where larger conspecifics occur. Hence, the main reason for bivalve dwarfism in the archipelago appears to result from low oceanic productivity (Foster's Rule). This, in turn, is associated with low diversity, possibly resulting from past extinctions and isolation, and low population sizes, except for Ervilia castanea, which here overwhelmingly occupies higher-energy inshore habitats and associated higher productivities. Nevertheless, this species too is dwarfed by mainland conspecifics. Similarly, the introduced Venerupis decussata, found solely within the lagoonal environment of Fajã de Santo Cristo on São Jorge, is somewhat smaller than its mainland conspecifics, although it is abundant enough to warrant artisanal exploitation. This study therefore, supports Foster's Rule and argues for the role of nutrient deficiency in regulating Azorean species richness and individual maximum size. In waters of locally higher productivities, however, population densities increase, but not size.

The distribution of the recently discovered association of the parasitic isopod Ceratothoa steindachneri (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) with the lesser weever fish (Echiichthys vipera) is reported. Ceratothoa steindachneri appears to have colonized the south-west coast of the UK between the 1960s and the 1980s, possibly as a result of range expansion due to climate change. The occurrence of C. steindachneri in E. vipera from Arcachon, France, indicates that this association has been occurring for over 100 years. Our data confirm that C. steindachneri is able to parasitize a broad range of fish hosts.

The Lakshadweep archipelago constitutes a major coral region of India but still lacks sufficient biodiversity data owing to its remoteness and a low number of faunal studies in the past. The present paper describes two new Pseudoceros species collected from Agatti Island, Lakshadweep, India. Pseudoceros bipurpurea sp. nov. and Pseudoceros galaxea sp. nov. are described based on external and internal characters, supported with histological studies and photographs. Pseudoceros bipurpurea sp. nov. is characterized by a cream background colour and an orange median line surrounded by dense patches of purple spots, which tend to disperse and broaden towards the posterior end. Pseudoceros galaxea sp. nov. displays a brown background colour with numerous white to cream dots covering almost the entire dorsal surface and a thin black margin. This study adds two new species to the polyclad fauna in Indian waters, raising the count to 68 species. An updated checklist of polyclads from Indian coast is also provided.

A number of damaged specimens of the scyphomedusa Poralia rufescens Vanhoffen from the north Atlantic have been examined. This has added to our knowledge of this rare medusa, of which only eleven damaged specimens had previously been recorded.

Most of the specimens were caught deeper than 1500 m.

Sexual differences in behaviours are often affected by the difference in individual interests between the sexes: growth in males and egg production in females. Some hermit crabs show sexual differences in shell use patterns during the reproductive season. In the non-reproductive season, however, when both sexes are focused on increasing growth, this sexual difference is expected to be reduced. In this study, we compared the pattern of shell use in the hermit crab Pagurus minutus between seasons, while focusing on the effects of shell shape on growth or egg production. As we predicted, sexual differences in shell use in P. minutus showed seasonal change. In the non-reproductive season, both sexes appeared to use shells well suited for growth. In the reproductive season, sexual differences became more evident, especially in larger solitary crabs and guarding pairs; males monopolized round-type shells such as those of Umbonium moniliferum, whereas more than 80% of females relied on high-spired Batillaria-type shells such as those of Batillaria zonalis. A lack of advantage for egg number in females using Batillaria-type shells suggests that female shell use is explained by factors other than maximizing clutch size. Both sexes can moult during the reproductive season, and larger body size is advantageous for reproduction. Given that Batillaria-type shells resulted in a lower growth increment and males have an advantage in shell fights in congeneric crabs, our findings suggest the importance of intersexual competition for shells and female compromise in determining the seasonal change of shell use patterns in P. minutus.

The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is a circumglobal species and is listed as vulnerable globally. The North Pacific population nests in Japan and migrates to the Central North Pacific and Pacific coast of North America to feed. In the Mexican Pacific, records of loggerhead presence are largely restricted to the Gulf of Ulloa along the Baja California Peninsula, where very high fisheries by-catch mortality has been reported. Records of loggerhead turtles within the Sea of Cortez also known as the Gulf of California (GC) exist; however, their ecology in this region is poorly understood. We used satellite tracking and an environmental variable analysis (chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface temperature (SST)) to determine movements and habitat use of five juvenile loggerhead turtles ranging in straight carapace length from 62.7–68.3 cm (mean: 66.7 ± 2.3 cm). Satellite tracking durations ranged from 73–293 days (mean: 149 ± 62.5 days), transmissions per turtle from 14–1006 (mean: 462 ± 379.5 transmissions) and total travel distance from 1237–5222 km (mean: 3118 ± 1490.7 km). We used travel rate analyses to identify five foraging areas in the GC, which occurred mainly in waters from 10–80 m deep, with mean Chl-a concentrations ranging from 0.28–13.14 mg m−3 and SST ranging from 27.8–34.4°C. This is the first study to describe loggerhead movements in the Gulf of California and our data suggest that loggerhead foraging movements are performed in areas with eutrophic levels of Chl-a.

Procerodes ulvœ has been found living in streams with calcium content as low as 5 mgm. per litre. Its upper limit does not appear to be affected by the calcium content of the water. The animals at the upper limit are liable to about 5 days' exposure to fresh water if calm weather coincides with Neap Tides. Animals living in water of 8–12 mgm. Ca per litre have been found alive at the end of such a period.

The gross morphology, histology, ultrastructure and periodicity of gonad development of the bathyal aspidochirote holothurian Bathyplotes natans is described and compared with the ‘tubule recruitment model’ proposed for aspidochirote holothurians. As B. natans grows, additional gonad tubules develop at the anterior end of the gonad basis. Oocyte development in these tubules is non-seasonal and the population of oocytes consists of both pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes as well as some large oocytes undergoing phagocytic breakdown. Vitellogenesis is similar to that described previously for holothurians, although the follicular inner epithelium cells surrounding the developing oocytes are different from those previously reported. In males the unique acrosomal complex consists of three depressions with the acrosome lying in the central depression. The tubule recruitment model of Smiley does not apply to B. natans. We do not feel this model has widespread applicability in the Aspidochirotida or the Holothurioidea in general.

Sampling data on abiotic parameters and benthic communities in the northern lagoon of Tunis were obtained seasonally from November 1999 to November 2000. Abiotic parameters studied revealed evident improvement of water quality compared with previous. Indeed, management has re-established a tidal marine influence (Gulf of Tunis), induced a remarkable change in physico-chemical parameters and as a consequence, a regulation of the lagoon environmental quality. A total of 90 species of benthic macroinvertebrates, belonging to seven different taxa were collected in the northern lagoon of Tunis. A comparison of ecological indices indicate significant variations in the spatial and seasonal distribution and structure of the benthic community and reflect changes that might be related to open marine water and climatic influences as well as effects of discharge of the neighbouring city. Generally, the lagoon macrobenthic community appeared to be better structured, richer and more diverse than the one described before sanitation works began. However, significant disturbance of the benthic communities is detected in the south-eastern lagoon zone (C) and is dominated by disturbance indicator species. In contrast, the Station A2 which is sufficiently influenced by marine currents, is dominated by species of marine affinity and indicates an undisturbed zone. Multivariate analysis indicates heterogeneity in the benthic community structure between stations and suggests that the most significant variations of abundance occur in the groups: Anthozoa, Placophora, Cephalopoda, Ascidia and Echinodermata. The results of correspondence analysis also testify to a gradational distribution of benthic species in relation to hydrological and edaphic (organic matter) factors.

“It may interest you to know that on Friday, 14th January, the weather being very fine, and the wind from the S.E., as the fishing-boat Sea Belle (Mr. Blamey, master), was proceeding to the pilchard ground some four or five miles south of the Deadman headland, when about two miles from land they fell in with masses of muddy brown matter in strings, some of which were three or four hundred yards long and form two to seven feet wide, floating quite on the surface. They had not proceeded far along these lanes or path-like forms on the sea before they observed that pilchards were feeding on them ravenously; so they tacked their boat among them for a mile or more, and the further they went the more abundant were the pilchards. About four miles from land and in thirty fathoms of water the anxious gulls indicated the outmost limit of these strangely coloured bands, and here the pilchards were the most plentiful, almost rabid in their mad rush on the lessening streaks, causing the water to boil and whirl violently. Certainly some of the shoals of pilchards could not have had less than thirty to sixty thousand fish in them, for they coloured the water a dark red when concentrated on the brown matter.

“Of course our fisherman expected a more than ordinary catch of pilchards when setting their nets; but, strange to tell, with the decline of the light, having fed to repletion, they sank down below the nets, and the catch was a small one, amounting to some two or three thousand fish.

Biometric relationships were recorded for 2431 male and female Panulirus echinatus sampled at Tamandaré coastal reefs, Pernambuco, Brazil. The following body measurements were taken: carapace length and width, abdomen length and width, total length, third and fifth pereiopod length, cephalothorax–abdomen and total weight. Twelve relationships were studied to compare the biometric characteristics of males and females. Eleven of them showed difference between the sexes. Comparing sexes with the same carapace length, males have a heavier cephalothorax and longer third and fifth pereiopods than females, whereas females are longer, wider, and have a heavier abdomen than males. For genders with the same total length, males are heavier and have a longer carapace than females, while females have a larger abdomen. For genders with the same abdomen length, males have a heavier abdomen than females. The relationships TWg/TL and AWg/AL showed positive allometric growth for the males. All other relationships involving weight, presented negative allometric growth for both sexes.
