We consider a real-analytic compact surface diffeomorphism $f$, for which the tangent space over the non-wandering set $\varOmega$ admits a dominated splitting. We study the dynamical determinant

where $\textrm{Fix}^*f^n$ denotes the set of fixed points of $f^n$ with no zero Lyapunov exponents. By combining previous work of Pujals and Sambarino on $C^2$ surface diffeomorphisms with, on the one hand, results of Rugh on hyperbolic analytic maps and, on the other, our two-dimensional version of the same author’s analysis of one-dimensional analytic dynamics with neutral fixed points, we prove that $d_f(z)$ is either an entire function or a holomorphic function in a (possibly multiply) slit plane.

We prove, under some assumptions, a Greenberg type equality relating the characteristic power series of the Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}$ of higher symmetric powers of the Galois representation associated to a Hida family and congruence ideals associated to (different) higher symmetric powers of that Hida family. We use $R=T$ theorems and a sort of induction based on branching laws for adjoint representations. This method also applies to other Langlands transfers, like the transfer from $\text{GSp}(4)$ to $U(4)$. In that case we obtain a corollary for abelian surfaces.

In this paper, we provide a concrete interpretation of equivariant Reidemeister torsion, and demonstrate that Bismut–Zhang’s equivariant Cheeger–Müller theorem simplifies considerably when applied to locally symmetric spaces. In a companion paper, this allows us to extend recent results on torsion cohomology growth and torsion cohomology comparison for arithmetic locally symmetric spaces to an equivariant setting.

We study the propagation of wave packets for a one-dimensional system of two coupled Schrödinger equations with a cubic nonlinearity, in the semiclassical limit. Couplings are induced by the nonlinearity and by the potential, whose eigenvalues present an avoided crossing: at one given point, the gap between them reduces as the semiclassical parameter becomes smaller. For data which are coherent states polarized along an eigenvector of the potential, we prove that when the wave function propagates through the avoided crossing point there are transitions between the eigenspaces at leading order. We analyze the nonlinear effects, which are noticeable away from the crossing point, but see that in a small time interval around this point the nonlinearity’s role is negligible at leading order, and the transition probabilities can be computed with the linear Landau–Zener formula.

We establish the first global results for groups definable in tame expansions of o-minimal structures. Let ${\mathcal{N}}$ be an expansion of an o-minimal structure ${\mathcal{M}}$ that admits a good dimension theory. The setting includes dense pairs of o-minimal structures, expansions of ${\mathcal{M}}$ by a Mann group, or by a subgroup of an elliptic curve, or a dense independent set. We prove: (1) a Weil’s group chunk theorem that guarantees a definable group with an o-minimal group chunk is o-minimal, (2) a full characterization of those definable groups that are o-minimal as those groups that have maximal dimension; namely, their dimension equals the dimension of their topological closure, (3) as an application, if ${\mathcal{N}}$ expands ${\mathcal{M}}$ by a dense independent set, then every definable group is o-minimal.

In this article, we show that the Abel–Jacobi images of the Heegner cycles over the Shimura curves constructed by Nekovar, Besser and the theta elements contructed by Chida–Hsieh form a bipartite Euler system in the sense of Howard. As an application of this, we deduce a converse to Gross–Zagier–Kolyvagin type theorem for higher weight modular forms generalising works of Wei Zhang and Skinner for modular forms of weight 2. That is, we show that if the rank of certain residual Selmer group is 1, then the Abel–Jacobi image of the Heegner cycle is nonzero in this residual Selmer group.

We prove an extension of the Kato–Saito unramified class field theory for smooth projective schemes over a finite field to a class of normal projective schemes. As an application, we obtain Bloch’s formula for the Chow groups of $0$-cycles on such schemes. We identify the Chow group of $0$-cycles on a normal projective scheme over an algebraically closed field to the Suslin homology of its regular locus. Our final result is a Roitman torsion theorem for smooth quasiprojective schemes over algebraically closed fields. This completes the missing p-part in the torsion theorem of Spieß and Szamuely.

We establish a kind of ‘degree $0$ Freudenthal ${\mathbb {G}_m}$ -suspension theorem’ in motivic homotopy theory. From this we deduce results about the conservativity of the $\mathbb P^1$ -stabilization functor.

In order to establish these results, we show how to compute certain pullbacks in the cohomology of a strictly homotopy-invariant sheaf in terms of the Rost–Schmid complex. This establishes the main conjecture of [2], which easily implies the aforementioned results.

In his 1985 paper, Sullivan sketched a proof of his structural stability theorem for differentiable group actions satisfying certain expansion-hyperbolicity axioms. In this paper, we relax Sullivan’s axioms and introduce a notion of meandering hyperbolicity for group actions on geodesic metric spaces. This generalization is substantial enough to encompass actions of certain nonhyperbolic groups, such as actions of uniform lattices in semisimple Lie groups on flag manifolds. At the same time, our notion is sufficiently robust, and we prove that meandering-hyperbolic actions are still structurally stable. We also prove some basic results on meandering-hyperbolic actions and give other examples of such actions.

Large-scale sublinearly Lipschitz maps have been introduced by Yves Cornulier in order to precisely state his theorems about asymptotic cones of Lie groups. In particular, Sublinearly bi-Lipschitz Equivalences (SBE) are a weak variant of quasi-isometries, with the only requirement of still inducing bi-Lipschitz maps at the level of asymptotic cones. We focus here on hyperbolic metric spaces and study properties of boundary extensions of SBEs, reminiscent of quasi-Möbius (or quasisymmetric) mappings. We give a dimensional invariant of the boundary that allows to distinguish hyperbolic symmetric spaces up to SBE, answering a question of Druţu.

Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with associated symmetric space $D$, and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\subset G$ be a cocompact arithmetic group. Let $\mathscr{L}$ be a lattice inside a $\mathbb{Z}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$-module arising from a rational finite-dimensional complex representation of $G$. Bergeron and Venkatesh recently gave a precise conjecture about the growth of the order of the torsion subgroup $H_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k};\mathscr{L})_{\operatorname{tors}}$ as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k}$ ranges over a tower of congruence subgroups of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$. In particular, they conjectured that the ratio $\log |H_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k};\mathscr{L})_{\operatorname{tors}}|/[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k}]$ should tend to a nonzero limit if and only if $i=(\dim (D)-1)/2$ and $G$ is a group of deficiency $1$. Furthermore, they gave a precise expression for the limit. In this paper, we investigate computationally the cohomology of several (non-cocompact) arithmetic groups, including $\operatorname{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ for $n=3,4,5$ and $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathscr{O})$ for various rings of integers, and observe its growth as a function of level. In all cases where our dataset is sufficiently large, we observe excellent agreement with the same limit as in the predictions of Bergeron–Venkatesh. Our data also prompts us to make two new conjectures on the growth of torsion not covered by the Bergeron–Venkatesh conjecture.

The pseudovariety $\mathbf{DG}$ of all finite monoids all of whose regular $\mathcal{D}$-classes are subgroups is shown to be local, that is, it is verified that the pseudovariety $g\mathbf{DG}$ of finite categories generated by $\mathbf{DG}$ coincides with the pseudovariety $\ell\mathbf{DG}$ of all finite categories whose local monoids all belong to $\mathbf{DG}$. Yet more general statements of this kind are deduced, yielding results such as that, for every prime number $p$, the pseudovariety $\mathbf{DG}_p$ of all finite monoids all of whose regular $\mathcal{D}$-classes are $p$-groups is local, or that the pseudovarieties $\mathbf{DG}_{\mathrm{sol}}$ and $\mathbf{DG}_{\mathrm{nil}}$ of all finite monoids all of whose regular \mbox{$\mathcal{D}$-classes} are, respectively, solvable groups and nilpotent groups are local.

In this article we study integral models of Shimura varieties, called Pappas–Rapoport splitting model, for ramified P.E.L. Shimira data. We study the special fiber and some stratification of these models, in particular we show that these are smooth and the Rapoport locus and the $\mu $-ordinary locus are dense, under some condition on the ramification.

This paper is a brief survey of recent results and some open problems related to linear groups of finite Morley rank, an area of research where Bruno Poizat's impact is very prominent. As a sign of respect to his strongly expressed views that mathematics has to be done, written and pulished only in the native tongue of the immediate author–the scribe, in effect–of the text, I insist on writing my paper in Russian, even if the results presented belong to a small but multilingual community of researchers of American, British, French, German, Kazakh, Russian, Turkish origin. To emphasise even further the linguistic subtleties involved, I use British spelling in the English fragments of my text.

Let $M$ and $N$ be two compact complex manifolds. We show that if the tautological line bundle ${\mathcal{O}}_{T_{M}^{\ast }}(1)$ is not pseudo-effective and ${\mathcal{O}}_{T_{N}^{\ast }}(1)$ is nef, then there is no non-constant holomorphic map from $M$ to $N$. In particular, we prove that any holomorphic map from a compact complex manifold $M$ with RC-positive tangent bundle to a compact complex manifold $N$ with nef cotangent bundle must be a constant map. As an application, we obtain that there is no non-constant holomorphic map from a compact Hermitian manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature to a Hermitian manifold with non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature.

We introduce a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of self-adjoint operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra. We define the real-valued spectral flow for a continuous path of self-adjoint Breuer–Fredholm operators in terms of a generalization of the winding number. We compare our definition with Phillips's analytical definition and derive integral formulae for the spectral flow for certain paths of unbounded operators with common domain, generalizing those of Carey and Phillips. Furthermore, we prove the homotopy invariance of the real-valued index. As an example we consider invariant symmetric elliptic differential operators on Galois coverings.

In this work, we describe a method to construct the generic braid monodromy of the preimage of a curve by a Kummer cover. This method is interesting since it combines two techniques, namely, the construction of a highly non-generic braid monodromy and a systematic method to go from a non-generic to a generic braid monodromy. The latter process, called generification, is independent from Kummer covers, and it can be applied in more general circumstances since non-generic braid monodromies appear more naturally and are oftentimes much easier to compute. Explicit examples are computed using these techniques.

Given a locally finite leafless tree $T$, various algebraic groups over local fields might appear as closed subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(T)$. We show that the set of closed cocompact subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(T)$ that are isomorphic to a quasi-split simple algebraic group is a closed subset of the Chabauty space of $\operatorname{Aut}(T)$. This is done via a study of the integral Bruhat–Tits model of $\operatorname{SL}_{2}$ and $\operatorname{SU}_{3}^{L/K}$, that we carry on over arbitrary local fields, without any restriction on the (residue) characteristic. In particular, we show that in residue characteristic $2$, the Tits index of simple algebraic subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(T)$ is not always preserved under Chabauty limits.

We show that there exists an invertible frequently hypercyclic operator on $\ell ^1(\mathbb {N})$ whose inverse is not frequently hypercyclic.
