We will consider coactions of discrete groups on C*-algebras and imitate some of the results about compact group actions on C*-algebras. In particular, the crossed product of a reduced coaction ∈ of a discrete amenable group G on A is liminal (respectively, postliminal) if and only if the fixed point algebra of ∈ is. Moreover, we will also consider ergodic coactions on C*-algebras.

Let V be a finite dimensional Hermitian vector space and K be a compact Lie subgroup of U(V) for which th representation of K on C[V] is multiplicity free. One obtains a canonical basis {pα} for the space C [VR]k of K-invariant polynomials on VR and also a basis {q's. The polynomial pα's yields the homogeneous component of highest degree in qα. The coefficient that express the qα's in terms of the pβ's are the generalized binomial coeffficients of Yan. The main result in this paper shows tht these numbers are rational.

It is shown that a variety ν has distributive congruence lattices if and only if the intersection of two principal congruence relations is definable by equations involving terms with parameters. The nature of the terms involved then provides a useful classification of congruence distributive varieties. In particular, the classification puts into proper perspective two stronger properties. A variety is said to have the Principal Intersection Property if the intersection of any two principal congruence relations is principal, or the Compact Intersection Property if the intersection of two compact congruence relations is compact. For non-congruence-distributive varieties, it is shown that some useful constuctions are nevertheless possible.

We say that a subgroup H is an n-th maximal subgroup of G if there exists a chain of subgroups G = G0 > G1 > … > Gn = H such that each Gi is a maximal subgroup of Gi-1, i = 1, 2, …, n. The purpose of this note is to classify all finite simple groups with the property that every third maximal subgroup is nilpotent.

In a series of papers, the author has previously investigated the spectra and fine spectra for weighted mean matrices, considered as bounded operators over various sequence spaces. This paper examines the spectra of weighted mean matrices as operators over bνv0, the space of null sequences of bounded variation.

It is well-known that quasi-Frobenius rings are characterized by the property that all propective right modules are injective, as well as by the property that all injective right modules are projective. Similarly, either the property that every quasi-injective or that every quasi-injective is quasi-projective characterizes uniserial rings. Oshiro has given similar characterizations for generalized uniserial rings. The purpose of this paper is to characterize rings for which continuous right modules are discrete. We show that these rings are precisely the uniserial rings. The property that every discrete module is continuous is also investigated.

In this note we give a basis for the radical of the group algebra of a p-nilpotent group over a field of characteristic p in terms of the ordinary representation theory of the group. We use our result to calculate the exponent of the radical for such a group.

We study the characteristic p analogue of M-groups, the so-called Mp-group Generalizing this notion, we also consider the condition that the modular irreducible representations are induced from representations of dimension < p, or even weaker, of dimension not divisible by p.

In this note we present a general Jordan-Hölder type theorem for modular lattices and apply it to obtain various (old and new) versions of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem for finite groups.

We give a positive answer to a question of Horst Tietz. A theorem of his that is related to the Mittag-Leffler theorem looks like a duality restult under some locally convex topology on the space of meromorphic functions. Tietz has posed the problem of finding such a topology. It is shown that a topology introduced by Holdguün in 1973 solves the problem. The main tool in the study of this topology is a projective description of it that is derived here. We also argue that Holdgrün's topology is the natural locally convex topology on the space of meromorphic functions.

Let fn be a sequence of nonnegative integers and let f(x): = Σn≥0 fn xn be its generating function. Assume f(x) has the following properties: it has radius of convergence r, 0 < r < 1, with its only singualarity on the circle of convergence at x = r and f(r) = s; y = f(x) satisfies an analytic identity F(x, y) = 0 near (r, s); for some k ≥ 2 F0.j = 0, 0 ≤ j < k, F0.k ≠ 0 where Fi is the value at (r, s) of the ith partial derivative with respect to x and the jth partial derivative with respect to y of F. These assumptions form the basis of what we call the typical and general cases. In both cases we show how to obtain an asymptotic expansion of fn. We apply our technique to produce several terms in the asymptotic expansion of combinatorial sequences for which previously only the first term was known.

It is proved that R is a near-ring with identity in which every element is a power of itself if and only if it is isomorphic with a near-ring of sections of a sheaf of near-fields in which every element is a power of itself. We also obtain that the Boolean spectrum is homeomorphic with the space of all completely prime ideals of R with the Zariski topology.

The authors begin by presenting a brief survey of the various useful methods of solving certain integral equations of Fredholm type. In particular, they apply the reduction techniques with a view to inverting a class of generalized hypergeometric integral transforms. This is observed to lead to an interesting generalization of the work of E. R. Love [9]. The Mellin transform technique for solving a general Fredholm type integral equation with the familiar H-function in the kernel is also considered.

A balanced tournament design, BTD(n), defined on a 2n—set V is an arrangement of the () distinct unordered pairs of the elements of V into an n × 2n − 1 array such that (1) every element of V is contained in precisely one cell of each column, and (2) every element of V is contained in at most two cells of each row. In this paper, we investigate the existence of balanced tournament designs with a pair of almost orthogonal resolutions. These designs can be used to construct doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- BIBD s and, in our smallest applications, have been used to construct previously unknown doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- B I B D s.

The Moore-Penrose inverse of a general bordered matrix is found under various conditions. The Moore-Penrose inverses obtained by Hall and Hartwig (1976) are shown to be special cases of these more general results.

Let K be an open convex domain in n-dimensional Euclidean space, symmetric about the origin O, and of finite Jordan content (volume) V. With K are associated n positive constants λ1, λ2,…,λn, the ‘successive minima of K’ and n linearly independent lattice points (points with integer coordinates) P1, P2, …, Pn (not necessarily unique) such that all lattice points in the body λ,K are linearly dependent on P1, P2, …, Pj-1. The points P1,…, Pj lie in λK provided that λ > λj. For j = 1 this means that λ1K contains no lattice point other than the origin. Obviously

The purpose of this note is to derive an alternative expression to that given in Lemma 1 below (due to Hsu, and to von Bahr) for the absolute moments of a random variable, in terms of the characteristic function.

In this paper, we show the existence of solutions of functional equations fix ∈ Sx ∪ Tx and x = fix ∈ Sx ∪ Tx under certain nonlinear hybrid contraction and asymptotic regularity conditions, generalize and improve a recent result due to Kaneko concerning common fixed points of multivalued mappings weakly commuting with a single-valued mapping and satisfying a generalized contraction type. Some related results are also obtained.

In the theory of multivalent functions there are several different levels of postulates for p-valency. Perhaps the most well-known is the class of mean p-valent functions in the sense of Spencer [8] (we shall refer to them as areally mean p-valent functions), whose basic properties are found, e.g., in Hayman [4]. Recently Eke [1, 2] extended to these functions a number of results which had been known for circumferentially mean p-valent functions.

Every directed graph defines a Hilbert space and a family of weighted shifts that act on the space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for such shifts and study their C* -algebras. We prove the algebras generated by all shifts of a fixed period are of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type. The limit C* -algebras determined by an increasing sequence of positive integers, each dividing the next, are proved to be isomorphic to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and the linking maps are shown to arise as factor maps. We derive a characterization of simplicity and compute the K-groups for these algebras. We prove a classification theorem for the class of algebras generated by simple loop graphs.
