We study the geometric properties of a base manifold whose unit tangent sphere bundle, equipped with the standard contact metric structure, is H-contact. We prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for the unit tangent sphere bundle of a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold to be H-contact is that the base manifold is 2-stein.

In this paper we investigate the following problem proposed by Lausch and Nöbauer: Let be a variety of universal algebras, B an algebra of and A a subalgebra of B. If a system of algebraic equations over A is solvable in , is it then solvable over B? We show that the answer is affirmative in certain varieties but negative in the general case.

A class of groups forms a (subnormal) coalition class, or is (subnormally) coalescent, if whenever H and K are subnormal -subgroups of a group G then their join <H, K> is also a subnormal -subgroup of G. Among the known coalition classes are those of finite groups and polycylic groups (Wielandt [15]); groups with maximal condition for subgroups (Baer [1]); finitely generated nilpotent groups (Baer [2]); groups with maximal or minimal condition on subnormal subgroups (Robinson [8], Roseblade [11, 12]); minimax groups (Roseblade, unpublished); and any subjunctive class of finitely generated groups (Roseblade and Stonehewer [13]).

We introduce complex differential geometry twisted by a real line bundle. This provides a new approach to understand the various real objects that are associated with an anti-holomorphic involution. We also generalize a result of Greenleaf about real analytic sheaves from dimension 2 to higher dimensions.

The Ritz method reduces eigenvalue problems involving linear operators on infinite dimensional spaces to finite matrix eigenvalue problems. This paper shows that for a certain class of linear operators it is possible to choose the coordinate functions so that numerical solution of the matrix equations is considerably simplified, especially when the matrices are large. The method is applied to the problem of overtone pulsations of stars.

A near ring is a triple (R, +, · ) such that (R, + ) is a group, (R, ·) is a semigroup, and · is left distributive over +; i.e. w(x + z) = wx + wz for each w, x, z in R. A normal subgroup K of a near ring R is an ideal if (i) (m + k)n − mn is in K for all m, n in R and k in K, and (ii) RK ⊆ K. In particular, kernels of near ring homomorphisms are ideals. For various other definitions and elementary facts about near rings, see [5,8]. For each x in a near ring R, let A(x) = {y ∈ R: xy = 0}. A survey on several recent papers on near rings [2,3,6,7,8] shows that the concept of A(x) being an ideal was the main technique. The purpose of this note is to initiate a study of near rings having the property that each A(x) is an ideal.

A Berry-Esseen type result is given for the conditional distribution of a weighted sum of i.i.d. integer-valued r.v.'s given that their unweighted sum equals its expectation. The examples include the case of sampling without replacement from a finite population.

As generalizations of inverse semigroups, Ehresmann semigroups are introduced by Lawson and investigated by many authors extensively in the literature. In particular, Lawson has proved that the category of Ehresmann semigroups and admissible morphisms is isomorphic to the category of Ehresmann categories and strongly ordered functors, which generalizes the well-known Ehresmann–Schein–Nambooripad (ESN) theorem for inverse semigroups. From a varietal perspective, Ehresmann semigroups are derived from reducts of inverse semigroups. In this paper, inspired by the approach of Jones [‘A common framework for restriction semigroups and regular $\ast$-semigroups’, J. Pure Appl. Algebra216 (2012), 618–632], Ehresmann semigroups are extended from a varietal perspective to pseudo-Ehresmann semigroups derived instead from reducts of regular semigroups with a multiplicative inverse transversal. Furthermore, motivated by the method used by Gould and Wang [‘Beyond orthodox semigroups’, J. Algebra368 (2012), 209–230], we introduce the notion of inductive pseudocategories over admissible quadruples by which pseudo-Ehresmann semigroups are described. More precisely, we show that the category of pseudo-Ehresmann semigroups and (2,1,1,1)-morphisms is isomorphic to the category of inductive pseudocategories over admissible quadruples and pseudofunctors. Our work not only generalizes the result of Lawson for Ehresmann semigroups but also produces a new approach to characterize regular semigroups with a multiplicative inverse transversal.

In an earlier paper, we investigated for finite lattices a concept introduced by A. Slavik: Let A, B, and S be sublattices of the lattice L, A∩B = S, A∪B = L. Then L pastes A and B together over S, if every amalgamation of A and B over S contains L as a sublattice. In this paper we extend this investigation to infinite lattices. We give several characterizations of pasting; one of them directly generalizes to the infinite case the characterization theorem of A. Day and J. Ježk. Our main result is that the variety of all modular lattices and the variety of all distributive lattices are closed under pasting.

For a class of formally hypoelliptic differential operators in divergence form we prove a generalized Gårding inequality. Using this inequality and further properties of the sesquilinear form generated by the differential operator a generalized homogeneous Dirichlet problem is treated in a suitable Hilbert space. In particular Fredholm's alternative theorem is proved to be valid.

In this paper we study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions of boundary vlue problems for continuous semilinear perturbations, say f: [0, 1) × (0, ∞) → (0, ∞), of class of quasilinear operators which represent, for instance, the radial form of the Dirichlet problem on the unit ball of RN for the operators: p-Laplacian (1 < p < ∞) ad k-Hessian (1 ≤ k ≤ N). As a key feature, f (r, u) is possibly singular at r = 1 or u =0, Our approach exploits fixed point arguments and the Shooting Method.

It is shown that that an ordinary linear differential equation may possess a holomorphic solution in a neighbourhood of an irregular singular point even though the usual linearly independent solutions corresponding to the two roots of the indicial equation both have zero radius of convergence.

Let G be a group which has exactly one normal subgroup N with G/N infinite cyclic; clearly such a group is an HNN group with base N and stable letter t, where t induces an automorphism θ, of N under conjugation. We call such a group G a unique base group with automorphism θ, and base N.

In this note a formation U is considered which can be defined by a sequence of laws which ‘almost’ hold in every finite supersoluble group. The class U contains all finite supersoluble groups and each group in U has a Sylow tower.

It is shown that a finite group belongs to U if and only if all of its subgroups with nilpotent commutator subgroup are supersoluble. A more general result concerning classes of this type finally proves that U is a saturated formation.

A module M is said to be wealdy-injective if and only if for every finitely generated submodule N of the injective hull E(M) of M there exists a submodule X of E(M), isomorphic to M such that N ⊂ X. In this paper we investigate weakly-injective modules over bounded hereditary noetherian prime rings. In particular we show that torsion-free modules over bounded hnp rings are always wealdy-injective, while torsion modules with finite Goldie dimension are weakly-injective only if they are injective.

As an application, we show that weakly-injective modules over bounded Dedekind prime rings have a decomposition as a direct sum of an injective module B, and a module C satisfying that if a simple module S is embeddable in C then the (external) direct sum of all proper submodules of the injective hull of S is also embeddable in C. Indeed, we show that over a bounded hereditary noetherian prime ring every uniform module has periodicity one if and only if every weakly-injective module has such a decomposition.

We consider a queueing system with k identical servers in parallel, the services being negative exponential with parameter μ. The input is a natural generalisation of the usual general recurrent input. If we denote the sequence of arrival points by {An, n ≧ 0} then the inter-arrival intervals are given by where the ƒi: are (integrable) non-negative functions and {Ui} is a sequence of identically and independently distributed random variables. In the simplest case, p = 0, this is just a general recurrent input. We write U(·) for the probability distribution function of the Un.

Let ((x)) = x −⌊x⌋−1/2 be the swatooth function. If a, b, c and e are positive integeral, then the integral or ((ax)) ((bx)) ((cx)) ((ex)) over the unit interval involves Apolstol's generalized Dedekind sums. By expressing this integral as a lattice-point sum we obtain an elementary method for its evaluation. We also give an elementary proof of the reciprocity law for the third generalized Dedekind sum.

The paper is devoted to showing that if the factorized group G = AB is almost solvable, if A and B are π-subgroups with min-p for some prime p in π and also if the hypercenter factor group A/H(A) or B/H(B) has min p for the prime p. then G is a π-group with min-p for the prime p.
