The self-consistent propagation of electrical impulses and of the accompanying distortions of the electron surface in the framework of a cold plasma model with a sharp boundary has been described with help of a derived system of two equations. The method of ‘shallow water theory’ has been applied for the case of bounded plasma and deriving an equation with which to link the spatial and temporal structures and evolution of the boundary curvature and the surface charge. Under certain conditions, such perturbations can propagate along the boundary without changing their shape for a long distance. An approximate analytical solution has been found, and numerical calculations have been performed. Mutual connections between basic parameters of the considered perturbations (velocity components, electrostatic field, etc.) have been presented.

This paper investigates the influence of compressibility on the internal wave modes and the density gradient-driven Rayleigh–Taylor (R–T) instability in magnetized strongly coupled dusty plasmas. The dusty magnetohydrodynamic model is formulated for compressible fluids, accounting for the effects of weakly coupled electrons/ions and strongly coupled dust particles under the influence of the gravitational field. The effect of the magnetic field on the dust dynamics has been incorporated through the magnetic force on the electrons and ions in quasineutral dusty plasmas. A dispersion relation of the R–T instability has been derived which has been modified because of the compressibility effect, dust acoustic wave speed and viscoelastic coefficients. The shear Alfvén and compressional viscoelastic wave modes become coupled in the dispersion characteristics. The modified R–T instability criterion is derived in terms of the Alfvén speed, viscoelastic effects and dust grain parameters. The graphical illustrations show that the growth rate of R–T instability has been suppressed due to compressibility, viscoelastic coefficients and dust acoustic speed. The results are useful to discuss the development of R–T instability in magnetized astrophysical dusty plasmas.

Magnetic reconnection is a basic particle acceleration mechanism in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Two-dimensional models have been critical to understanding the onset of reconnection in laboratory experiments, but are fundamentally limited in diagnosing ion acceleration along open magnetic field lines. These shortcomings have opened the way to three-dimensional (3-D) models of torsional reconnection, where localized rotational perturbations to a fan-spine magnetic null point topology have demonstrated bulk particle acceleration along open magnetic field lines. Previous computational studies of the torsional fan reconnection mode using both solar and laboratory parameters demonstrated collimated jet formation and acceleration along the spine axis, wherein the bulk particle final kinetic energy spectra were shown to fall within a relatively narrow range (${\sim }2$ keV). This paper introduces typical laboratory plasma parameters in the torsional spine mode of 3-D reconnection models to diagnose its efficacy in inducing rapid ion acceleration. Using laboratory-scale length helium plasma parameters typical of capacitive discharges (singly ionized helium), we solve for relativistic particle trajectories using solutions to the steady-state, resistive, kinematic magnetohydrodynamic equations in the fan-spine topology. We find that particle acceleration at the reconnection site is highly dependent on the injection radius, and the peak accelerated particles ($\approx$3 keV) are trapped about the magnetic null point. While a jet is formed by ions injected close to the peak fan plane perturbation radius, their final ion kinetic energies are an order of magnitude lower ($\approx$0.3 keV) than the mirrored particles. Analysing the time dependence of their limited representative energy spectra shows the torsional spine mode particles follow an evolution much different than the narrow spectra of the torsional fan mode. These results have implications for diagnostic expectations of future laboratory plasma experiments designed to induce the torsional spine reconnection mode.

Some stellarators tend to benefit from favourable average magnetic curvature for trapped particles when the plasma pressure is sufficiently high. This so-called maximum-$J$ property has several positive implications, such as good fast-particle confinement, magnetohydrodynamic stability and suppression of certain trapped-particle instabilities. This property cannot be attained in quasisymmetric stellarators, in which deeply trapped particles experience average bad curvature and therefore precess in the diamagnetic direction close to the magnetic axis. However, quasi-isodynamic stellarators offer greater flexibility and allow the average curvature to be favourable and the precession to be reversed. We find that it is possible to design such stellarators so that the maximum-$J$ condition is satisfied for the great majority of all particles, even when the plasma pressure vanishes. The qualitative properties of such a stellarator field can be derived analytically by examining the most deeply and the most shallowly trapped particles, although some small fraction of the latter will inevitably not behave as desired. However, through numerical optimisation, we construct a vacuum field in which 99.6 % of all trapped particles satisfy the maximum-$J$ condition.

A conducting cylinder with a uniform magnetic field along its axis and radial temperature gradient is considered at the stationary state. At large temperature gradients the azimuthal Hall electrical current creates an axial magnetic field whose strength may be comparable with the original one. It is shown that the magnetic field, generated by the azimuthal Hall current, leads to the decrease of a magnetic field originated by external sources, and this suppression increases with an increase of the electromotive force, connected with thermodiffusion. Obtained results can help to investigate the influence of the Hall current on the coupled magnetothermal evolution of magnetic and electric fields in neutron stars, white dwarfs and, possibly, in laboratory facilities.

Collisionless shocks are frequently analysed using the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) formalism, even though MHD assumes a small mean free path. Yet, isotropy of pressure, the fruit of binary collisions and assumed in MHD, may not apply in collisionless shocks. This is especially true within a magnetized plasma, where the field can stabilize an anisotropy. In a previous article (Bret & Narayan, J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, no. 6, 2022b, p. 905880615), a model was presented capable of dealing with the anisotropies that may arise at the front crossing. It was solved for any orientation of the field with respect to the shock front. Yet, for some values of the upstream parameters, several downstream solutions were found. Here, we complete the work started in Bret & Narayan (J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, no. 6, 2022b, p. 905880615) by showing how to pick the physical solution out of the ones offered by the algebra. This is achieved by 2 means: (i) selecting the solution that has the downstream field obliquity closest to the upstream one. This criterion is exemplified on the parallel case and backed up by particle-in-cell simulations. (ii) Filtering out solutions which do not satisfy a criteria already invoked to trim multiple solutions in MHD: the evolutionarity criterion, that we assume valid in the collisionless case. The end result is a model in which a given upstream configuration results in a unique, or no downstream configuration (as in MHD). The largest departure from MHD is found for the case of a parallel shock.

Continuum kinetic simulations are increasingly capable of resolving high-dimensional phase space with advances in computing. These capabilities can be more fully explored by using linear kinetic theory to initialize the self-consistent field and phase space perturbations of kinetic instabilities. The phase space perturbation of a kinetic eigenfunction in unmagnetized plasma has a simple analytic form, and in magnetized plasma may be well approximated by truncation of a cyclotron-harmonic expansion. We catalogue the most common use cases with a historical discussion of kinetic eigenfunctions and by conducting nonlinear Vlasov–Poisson and Vlasov–Maxwell simulations of singlemode and multimode two-stream, loss-cone and Weibel instabilities in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas with one- and two-dimensional geometries. Applications to quasilinear kinetic theory are discussed and applied to the bump-on-tail instability. In order to compute eigenvalues we present novel representations of the dielectric function for ring distributions in magnetized plasmas with power series, hypergeometric and trigonometric integral forms. Eigenfunction phase space fluctuations are visualized for prototypical cases such as the Bernstein modes to build intuition. In addition, phase portraits are presented for the magnetic well associated with nonlinear saturation of the Weibel instability, distinguishing current-density-generating trapping structures from charge-density-generating ones.

In the present work, we extend the results of a previous investigation on the dynamics of electrons under the action of an inverse free-electron-laser scheme (Almansa et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 26, 2019, 033105). While the former work examined electrons as single test particles subject to the combined action of a modulated wiggler plus a laser field, we now look at electrons as composing a particle beam, where collective space-charge effects are relevant and included in the analysis. Our previous work showed that effective acceleration is achieved when the initial velocities of the particles are close enough to the phase velocity of the beat-wave mode formed by the laser and the wiggler fields. Electrons are then initially accelerated by a ponderomotive uphill effect generated by the beat mode and, once reaching the phase velocity of the beat, undergo a final strong resonant acceleration step resembling a catapult effect. The present work shows that, under proper conditions, space-charge effects play a similar role as the initial (or injected) velocity of the beam. Even if acceleration is absent when space charge is neglected, it may be present and effective when charge effects are taken into account. We also discuss how far the space charge can grow without affecting the sustainability of the acceleration process.

Generalising the Elsässer variables, we introduce the $Q$-variables. These are more flexible than the Elsässer variables, because they also allow us to track waves with phase speeds different than the Alfvén speed. We rewrite the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with these $Q$-variables. We consider also the linearised version of the resulting MHD equations in a uniform plasma, and recover the classical Alfvén waves, but also separate the fast and slow magnetosonic waves into upward- and downward-propagating waves. Moreover, we show that the $Q$-variables may also track the upward- and downward-propagating surface Alfvén waves in a non-uniform plasma, displaying the power of our generalisation. In the end, we lay the mathematical framework for driving solar wind models with a multitude of wave drivers.

The maser instability associated with the loss-cone distribution has been widely invoked to explain the radio bursts observed in the astrophysical plasma environment, such as aurora and corona. In the laboratory plasma of a tokamak, events reminiscent of these radio bursts have also been frequently observed as an electron cyclotron emission (ECE) burst in the microwave range ($\mathrm{\sim }2{f_{\textrm{ce}}}$ near the last closed flux surface) during transient magnetohydrodynamic events. These bursts have a short duration of ~10 μs and display a radiation spectrum corresponding to a radiation temperature ${T_{e,\textrm{rad}}}$ of over $30\ \textrm{keV}$ while the edge thermal electron temperature ${T_e}$ is only in the range of $1\ \textrm{keV}$. Suprathermal electrons can be generated through magnetic reconnection, and a loss-cone distribution can be generated through open stochastic field lines in the magnetic mirror of the near-edge region of a tokamak plasma. Radiation modelling shows that a sharp distribution gradient $\partial f/\partial {v_ \bot } > 0$ at the loss-cone boundary can cause a negative absorption of ECE radiation through the maser instability. The negative absorption then amplifies the radiation so that the microwave intensity is significantly stronger than the thermal value. The significant ${T_{e,\textrm{rad}}}$ from the simulations suggests the potential role of the loss-cone maser instability in generating the ECE burst in a tokamak.

We present a detailed characterization of the structure and evolution of differentially rotating plasmas driven on the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator (1.4 MA peak current, 240 ns rise time). The experiments were designed to simulate physics relevant to accretion discs and jets on laboratory scales. A cylindrical aluminium wire array Z pinch enclosed by return posts with an overall azimuthal off-set angle was driven to produce ablation plasma flows that propagate inwards in a slightly off-radial trajectory, injecting mass, angular momentum and confining ram pressure to a rotating plasma column on the axis. However, the plasma is free to expand axially, forming a collimated, differentially rotating axial jet that propagates at ${\approx }100\,{\rm km}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$. The density profile of the jet corresponds to a dense shell surrounding a low-density core, which is consistent with the centrifugal barrier effect being sustained along the jet's propagation. We show analytically that, as the rotating plasma accretes mass, conservation of mass and momentum implies plasma radial growth scaling as $r \propto t^{1/3}$. As the characteristic moment of inertia increases, the rotation velocity is predicted to decrease and settle on a characteristic value ${\approx }20\,{\rm km}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$. We find that both predictions are in agreement with Thomson scattering and optical self-emission imaging measurements.

This study documents several correlations observed during the first run of the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment E300 conducted at FACET-II, using a single drive electron bunch. The established correlations include those between the measured maximum energy loss of the drive electron beam and the integrated betatron X-ray signal, the calculated total beam energy deposited in the plasma and the integrated X-ray signal, among three visible light emission measuring cameras and between the visible plasma light and X-ray signal. The integrated X-ray signal correlates almost linearly with both the maximum energy loss of the drive beam and the energy deposited into the plasma, demonstrating its usability as a measure of energy transfer from the drive beam to the plasma. Visible plasma light is found to be a useful indicator of the presence of a wake at three locations that overall are two metres apart. Despite the complex dynamics and vastly different time scales, the X-ray radiation from the drive bunch and visible light emission from the plasma may prove to be effective non-invasive diagnostics for monitoring the energy transfer from the beam to the plasma in future high-repetition-rate experiments.

Electrostatic gyrokinetic instabilities and turbulence in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator are studied. Particular attention is paid to the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) instability and its character close to marginal stability [Floquet-type turbulence (Zocco et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 106, 2022, p. L013202) with no electron temperature gradient]. The flux tube version of the $\delta f$ code stella (Barnes et al., J. Comput. Phys., vol. 391, 2019, pp. 365–380) is used to run linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations with kinetic electrons. The nature of the dominant instability depends on the wavelength perpendicular to the magnetic field, and the results are conveniently displayed in stability diagrams that take this dependence into account. This approach highlights the presence of universal instabilities, which are less unstable but have longer wavelengths than other modes. A quasi-linear estimate of the heat flux suggests they are relevant for transport. Close to the stability threshold, the linear eigenmodes and turbulence form highly extended structures along the computational domain if the magnetic shear is small. Numerical experiments and diagnostics are undertaken to assess the resulting radial localisation of the turbulence, which affects the interaction of the latter with zonal flows. Increasing the amplitude of the magnetic shear (e.g.through current drive) has a stabilising effect on the turbulence and, thus, reduces the nonlinear energy transport.

The Okubo–Weiss (Okubo, Deep-Sea Res., vol. 17, issue 3, 1970, pp. 445–454; Weiss, Physica D, vol. 48, issue 2, 1991, pp. 273–294) criterion has been widely used as a diagnostic tool to divide a two-dimensional (2-D) hydrodynamical flow field into hyperbolic and elliptic regions. This paper considers extension of these ideas to 2-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, and presents an Okubo–Weiss-type criterion to parameterize the magnetic field topology in 2-D MHD flows. This ensues via its topological connections with the intrinsic metric properties of the underlying magnetic flux manifold, and is illustrated by recasting the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion via the 2-D MHD stationary generalized Alfvénic state condition to approximate the slow-flow-variation ansatz imposed in its derivation. The Okubo–Weiss-type parameter then turns out to be related to the sign definiteness of the Gaussian curvature of the magnetic flux manifold. A similar formulation becomes possible for 2-D electron MHD flows, by using the generalized magnetic flux framework to incorporate the electron-inertia effects. Numerical simulations of quasi-stationary vortices in 2-D MHD flows in the decaying turbulence regime are then given to demonstrate that the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion is able to separate the MHD flow field into elliptic and hyperbolic field configurations very well.

We investigate the effects of different guard geometries on the currents to needle-type Langmuir probes. The results are based on particle-in-cell numerical simulations. We show that if the guard length is less than 6–8 Debye lengths there can be a significant effect on the currents to the probe. A guard radius should not be larger than the Debye length, otherwise it can also significantly affect the currents. However, since guard radii are often close to the probe radius, the second condition is usually satisfied.

Free normal-flow (NF) conditions at the plasma boundary are shown to be essential for three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to agree with linear stability theory. A comparative verification study is presented between two different formulations of the boundary conditions (BCs) for velocity perturbations: (i) fully consistent free NF implementation and (ii) fixed NF formulation, neglecting flow perturbations at the numerical boundary. Numerical results are compared with consolidated figures of merit from the linear theory of external kink modes. We consider two classes of initial equilibria presenting different numerical challenges: a uniform current channel surrounded by pure vacuum and a shaped Wesson-like equilibrium, with smooth (polynomial) radial dependency. Only the fully consistent free NF formulation is invariably accurate in modelling the plasma interface at the numerical boundary, without the need of enforcing a pseudovacuum region at the edge of the simulation domain, as in most analogous past studies. This study employs the cylindrical code SPECYL (Cappello & Biskamp, Nucl. Fusion, vol. 36, no. 5, 1996, p. 571) that solves a full-MHD model without pressure gradients, whose fully consistent resistive wall module with free NF BCs was recently successfully verified against the independent code PIXIE3D (Spinicci et al., AIP Adv., vol. 13, no. 9, 2023, p. 095111).

The Earth magnetopause, when sufficiently plane and stationary at a local scale, can be considered as a ‘quasi-tangential’ discontinuity, since the normal component of the magnetic field $B_n$ is typically very small but not zero. Contrary to observations, the ‘classic theory of discontinuities’ predicts that rotational and compressional jumps should be mutually exclusive in the general case $B_n \ne 0$, but allows only one exception: the tangential discontinuity provided that $B_n$ is strictly zero. Here we show that finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects play an important role in the quasi-tangential case, whenever the ion Larmor radius is not fully negligible with respect to the magnetopause thickness. By including FLR effects, the results suggest that a rotational discontinuity undergoes a change comparable to the change of a shear Alfvén into a kinetic Alfvén wave when considering linear modes. For this new kind of discontinuity, the co-existence of rotational and compressional variations at the magnetopause does no more imply that this boundary is a strict tangential discontinuity, even in one-dimensional (1-D)-like regions far from X lines if any. This result may lead to important consequences concerning the oldest and most basic questions of magnetospheric physics: how can the magnetopause be open, where and when? While the role of FLR is established theoretically, in this paper we show that it can be proved experimentally. For this, we make use of magnetospheric multiscale mission (MMS) data and process them with the most recent available four spacecraft tools. First, we present the different processing techniques that we use to estimate spatial derivatives, such as $grad(B)$ and $div(P)$, and the magnetopause normal direction. We point out why this normal direction must be determined with extremely high accuracy to make the conclusions unambiguous. Then, the results obtained by these techniques are presented in a detailed case study and on a statistical basis.

We compare three different approaches to describe a magnetic island in a generic toroidal plasma: (i) perturbative, from the perspective of the equilibrium magnetic field and the related action in a variational principle formulation; (ii) again perturbative, based on the integrability of a system with a single resonant mode and the application of a canonical transformation onto a new island equilibrium system; and (iii) non-perturbative, making use of a full geometric description of the island considered as a stand-alone plasma domain. For the three approaches, we characterize some observables and discuss the respective limits.

Magnetic reconnection is an important process in astrophysical environments, as it reconfigures magnetic field topology and converts magnetic energy into thermal and kinetic energy. In extreme astrophysical systems, such as black hole coronae and pulsar magnetospheres, radiative cooling modifies the energy partition by radiating away internal energy, which can lead to the radiative collapse of the reconnection layer. In this paper, we perform two- and three-dimensional simulations to model the MARZ (Magnetic Reconnection on Z) experiments, which are designed to access cooling rates in the laboratory necessary to investigate reconnection in a previously unexplored radiatively cooled regime. These simulations are performed in GORGON, an Eulerian two-temperature resistive magnetohydrodynamic code, which models the experimental geometry comprising two exploding wire arrays driven by 20 MA of current on the Z machine (Sandia National Laboratories). Radiative losses are implemented using non-local thermodynamic equilibrium tables computed using the atomic code Spk, and we probe the effects of radiation transport by implementing both a local radiation loss model and $P_{1/3}$ multi-group radiation transport. The load produces highly collisional, super-Alfvénic (Alfvén Mach number $M_A \approx 1.5$), supersonic (Sonic Mach number $M_S \approx 4-5$) strongly driven plasma flows which generate an elongated reconnection layer (Aspect Ratio $L/\delta \approx 100$, Lundquist number $S_L \approx 400$). The reconnection layer undergoes radiative collapse when the radiative losses exceed the rates of ohmic and compressional heating (cooling rate/hydrodynamic transit rate = $\tau _{\text {cool}}^{-1}/\tau _{H}^{-1}\approx 100$); this generates a cold strongly compressed current sheet, leading to an accelerated reconnection rate, consistent with theoretical predictions. Finally, the current sheet is also unstable to the plasmoid instability, but the magnetic islands are extinguished by strong radiative cooling before ejection from the layer.

We introduce an extension of the particle-in-cell method that captures the Landau collisional effects in the Vlasov–Maxwell–Landau equations. The method arises from a regularisation of the variational formulation of the Landau equation, leading to a discretisation of the collision operator that conserves mass, charge, momentum and energy, while increasing the (regularised) entropy. The collisional effects appear as a fully deterministic effective force, thus the method does not require any transport–collision splitting. The scheme can be used in arbitrary dimension, and for a general interaction, including the Coulomb case. We validate the scheme on scenarios such as the Landau damping, the two-stream instability and the Weibel instability, demonstrating its effectiveness in the numerical simulation of plasma.
