We report the synthesis of Th1–xMnxO2 (x = 0, 0.001, 0.002, 0.004, and 0.01 wt%) nanoparticles by the urea combustion method using thorium nitrate gel followed by heat treatment at a higher temperature (T). The obtained Th1–xMnxO2 nanocrystals were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), direct-current magnetization (M) measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). XRD analysis revealed that Th1–xMnxO2 crystallizes in the cubic structure (Fm3m). M measurements showed ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature for Th0.99Mn0.01O2 samples annealed at 775 K. An intense and broad ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) having linewidth of ∼1200 G, was observed at relatively lower fields in the EPR spectra of Th0.99Mn0.01O2 samples annealed at 775 K, indicating the presence of a ferromagnetic phase at room temperature. EPR measurements were used to estimate the number of spins involved in the ferromagnetic ordering. Out of the total Mn present in Th0.99Mn0.01O2 samples, about 25% of the Mn2+ ions were found to be responsible for the ferromagnetic ordering. In addition to the FMR signal, a weak hyperfine sextet was observed at g = 2.0048 (55Mn, I = 5/2), which corresponds to the −1/2 ↔ +1/2 transition of Mn2+ ions, suggesting its presence at thorium sites (uncoupled spins). X-ray photoelectron spectra indicated that the manganese ions exist mainly as Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+. The room-temperature ferromagnetism may be attributed to the coupling between these Mn2+ ions at thorium sites in ThO2 rather than due to the formation of any metastable secondary phases.

Flowerlike manganese oxide microspheres and cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts were selectively synthesized by a simple decomposition of KMnO4 under mild hydrothermal conditions without using template or cross-linking reagents. The effect of varying the hydrothermal times and temperatures on the nanostructure, morphology, compositional, and electrochemical properties of the obtained manganese oxides was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies showed that the flowerlike manganese oxide microspheres could be obtained at relatively low hydrothermal temperatures, while high hydrothermal temperatures were favorable for the formation of cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts. A morphology and crystalline evolution of the nanostructures was observed as the hydrothermal temperature was increased from 180 to 240 °C. On the basis of changing the temperatures and hydrothermal reaction times, the formation mechanism of cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts is discussed. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to evaluate the electrochemical properties of the obtained manganese oxide nanostructures, and the results show that the electrochemical properties depend on their shape and crystalline structure. This easily controllable, template-free, and environmentally friendly method has the potential for being used in syntheses of manganese oxide nanomaterials with uniform morphologies and crystal structures.

Eu2+-doped Li2SrSiO4 phosphors were prepared by two different synthesis processes, the Pechini sol-gel route and solid-state reaction (SSR) method. Their morphology, crystal structure, and luminescence properties have been characterized. Li2SrSiO4:Eu2+ phosphors show broad and intensive excitation in the range of 390–480 nm and emit yellow-orange light extending from 500 to 700 nm. The luminescence efficiency of Li2SrSiO4: Eu2+ phosphors synthesized through the Pechini route is much better than that of phosphors prepared by solid-state reaction method. The application of phosphors from the Pechini route in white light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been investigated. The Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates and the correlated color temperature of these white LEDs have been calculated; they are comparable to corresponding values of commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ converted white LEDs.

Fabrication and terahertz wave properties of alumina microphotonic crystals with a diamond structure were investigated. The three-dimensional diamond structure was designed on a computer using 3D-CAD software. The designed lattice constant was 500 μm. The structure consisted of 8 × 8 × 4 unit cells. Acrylic diamond structures with an alumina dispersion of 40 vol% were formed by using microstereolithography. Fabricated precursors were dewaxed at 600 °C and sintered at 1500 °C. The linear shrinkage ratio was about 25%. The relative density reached 97.5%. The electromagnetic wave properties were measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. A complete photonic band gap was observed at the frequency range from 0.40 THz to 0.47 THz, and showed good agreement with the simulation results calculated by the plane wave expansion method. Moreover, localized modes were obtained at the frequencies 0.42 THz and 0.46 THz by introducing an air defect in the diamond structure. They corresponded to the simulation by the transmission line modeling method.

A closed-loop approach is adopted to implement strain rate control during the bulge test. Due to the difficulty of measuring strains directly, the technique is based on the conversion of displacement measurements to the corresponding strains using the plane-strain formulation. The necessary temporal evolution of the midpoint displacement of a rectangular diaphragm is derived under the condition of constant strain rate and is imposed as a control criterion. The technique is demonstrated on 500-nm-thick Au diaphragms by applying strain rates ranging from 2 × 10−6 to 2 × 10−4 s–1. By measuring the corresponding yield strength values, a strain rate sensitivity of 0.11 is obtained, which is close to what was previously reported on similar specimens using the microbending test.

The electrical conductivities of Cu–3at.%Ti alloys aged at 773 K in a hydrogen atmosphere were investigated as a function of aging time. The electrical conductivity of the quenched alloy, 5.2% International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS), improved with aging time to 66% IACS after 48 h. This was mainly caused by the dilution of the Cu–Ti solid solution in the alloy, which is supported by the fact that the lattice parameter of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase approaches that of pure Cu by aging in a hydrogen atmosphere.

Ni–7 wt% V diffusion barrier is commonly used in flip chip technology, and Sn is the primary element of all commercial electronic solders. Different from the interfacial reactions in the Sn/Ni couples, a ternary T phase is formed in the Sn/Ni–7 wt% V couples reacted at temperatures lower than 350 °C. The T phase is a mixture of an amorphous phase and the Ni3Sn4 phase with grains about 50 nm in size. The amorphous phase is composed mainly of Sn and V atoms, and it is formed due to the fast diffusion of Sn and relative immobility of V. Activation energy of the T phase formation is 16.5 kJ/mol, which is approximately 50% of that of the Ni3Sn4 phase determined from the Sn/Ni interfacial reactions. The T phase is no longer formed and the reaction product is the Ni3Sn4 phase in the Sn/Ni–7 wt% V couples reacted at temperatures higher than 350 °C.

Hydrogenated nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si:H) thin films were prepared by plasma- enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The films were deposited with a radio-frequency power of 100 W, while substrates were exposed to direct current (dc) biases in the range from 0 to −400 V. The effects of dc bias on the formation of nanoscale Si crystallites in the films and on their optical characteristics were investigated. The size of the Si crystallites in the films ranges from ∼1.9 to ∼4.1 nm. The relative fraction of the crystallites in the films reached up to ∼56.5% when a dc bias of −400 V was applied. Based on the variation in the structural, chemical, and optical features of the films with dc bias voltages, a model for the formation of nanostructures of the nc-Si:H films prepared by PECVD was suggested. This model can be utilized to understand the evolution in the size and relative fraction of the nanocrystallites as well as the amorphous matrix in the nc-Si:H films.

Mechanical properties of silicon are of high interest to the microelectromechanical systems community as it is the most frequently used structural material. Compression tests on 8 μm diameter silicon pillars were performed under a micro-Raman setup. The uniaxial stress in the micropillars was derived from a load cell mounted on a microindenter and from the Raman peak shift. Stress measurements from the load cell and from the micro-Raman spectrum are in excellent agreement. The average compressive failure strength measured in the middle of the micropillars is 5.1 GPa. Transmission electron microscopy investigation of compressed micropillars showed cracks at the pillar surface or in the core. A correlation between crack formation and dislocation activity was observed. The authors strongly believe that the combination of nanoindentation and micro-Raman spectroscopy allowed detection of cracks prior to failure of the micropillar, which also allowed an estimation of the in-plane stress in the vicinity of the crack tip.

A number of physiological systems involve contact or indentation of solids with tensed surface layers. In this paper the contact problem of spherical indentation of a linear elastic solid, covered with a tensed membrane is addressed. Semianalytical solutions are obtained relating indentation force to contact radius, as well as contact radius to depth. Good agreement is found between derived equations and results from finite element method (FEM) simulations. In addition, effect of membrane on subsurface stresses is shown quantitatively and compared favorably to FEM results. This work is applicable to mechanical property assessment of a number of biological systems.

Amorphous siliconlike films with hydrophobic functionalities have been deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition on carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) unidirectional laminates used for micromechanical applications where high strength-to-weight and high stiffness-to-weight ratios are required. To improve long-term geometrical stability in ultrahigh-precision machine structures, hydrophobic CFRP materials are desirable. Three layers have been grown with different plasma-process parameters from a mixture of hexamethyldisiloxane, O2, and Ar. Chemical composition, water contact angle, surface energy, morphology, and tribological properties have been evaluated to choose the one that best fulfills hydrophobicity, wear, and scratch resistance. Wear tests have also been carried out on CFRP laminates coated with a polyurethane layer to compare the wear performance of the above specimens with that of a conventional hydrophobic coating. Scanning electron microscope images show a very good adhesion of the films to the composite substrate because the failure of the film and of the substrate (such as fiber failure) take place simultaneously.

The primary tool for mechanical characterization of surfaces and films is instrumented indentation using the Oliver-Pharr data analysis method. However, this method measures contact area between the indenter and sample indirectly, thus confounding instrumented indentation tests when characterizing dynamic properties, thin films, and materials that “pileup” around the indenter. Here, we demonstrate an electrical technique to continuously measure the in situ contact area by relating nonlinear electrical contact current–voltage (I–V) curves to the instantaneous contact area. Using this approach, we can obtain hardness as a continuous function of applied force.

In this study, we synthesized Cu–Zr binary alloys reinforced with an ultrafine eutectic microstructure. The alloys consisted of alternating layers of a hard superlattice phase and a ductile Cu phase with a very fine interlamellar spacing of ∼60 nm. The superlattice phase enhanced the strength of the alloys while the laminated composite structure helped improve their plasticity, making their mechanical properties comparable to those of the earlier reported high strength alloys. This paper discusses the fundamental microstructural aspects that influence the mechanical properties of these alloys.

Hydrogenated In-doped ZnO (ZIO:H) films grown at different ratios, R, of hydrogen to argon were deposited at a substrate temperature of 100 °C for the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The OLEDs with the ZIO:H (R = 0.08) anode achieved a maximum luminance efficiency of 3.4 cd/A and a power efficiency of 0.6 lm/W, which are as good as the values of the control device fabricated on a tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) anode. This indicates that the efficiency of the OLEDs is critically affected by the ratio of injected hydrogen gas during the deposition of the ZIO and that the ZIO:H developed herein is promising as an alternative to conventional ITO.

The effect of rapid microwave heating has so far been evaluated mainly by comparing the state of materials before and after microwave exposure. Yet, further progress critically depends on the ability to follow the evolution of materials during ultrafast heating in real time. We describe the first in situ time-resolved monitoring of solid-state phase transitions during microwave heating of metallic powders using wide-angle synchrotron radiation diffraction. Single-phase Al–Cu–Fe quasicrystal powders were obtained by microwave heating of nanocrystalline alloy precursors at 650 °C in <20 s.

The mechanical properties of thin films are frequently evaluated using nanoindentation. The finite element method (FEM) is very effective for investigating the stress and strain fields of the film–substrate system during nanoindentation. However, the role of residual stress and the thin interlayer between the film and substrate is not well known, especially when the hard coating/interlayer/soft substrate are considered together. In this work, the FEM is used to investigate the load-displacement behavior of the hardness of the hard coating/interlayer/soft substrate system. The load–displacement process is simulated, and the effects of different residual stresses and interlayer thicknesses are discussed.

In the present study, pure titanium (Ti) plates were firstly treated to form various types of oxide layers on the surface and then were immersed into simulated body fluid (SBF) to evaluate the apatite-forming ability. The surface morphology and roughness of the different oxide layers were measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the surface energies were determined based on the Owens–Wendt (OW) methods. It was found that Ti samples after alkali heat (AH) treatment achieved the best apatite formation after soaking in SBF for three weeks, compared with those without treatment, thermal or H2O2 oxidation. Furthermore, contact angle measurement revealed that the oxide layer on the alkali heat treated Ti samples possessed the highest surface energy. The results indicate that the apatite-inducing ability of a titanium oxide layer links to its surface energy. Apatite nucleation is easier on a surface with a higher surface energy.

InTaO4 is an efficient visible-light photocatalyst, which used to be synthesized by solid-state fusion at over 1100 °C. However, irregular morphology and severe agglomeration of particles were acquired due to nonuniform fusion of solid precursors. In this study, InTaO4 was synthesized by two sol-gel routes, the thermal hydrolysis and esterification methods. The precursors were indium (III) nitrate pentahydrate [In(NO3)3] and tantalum(V) butoxide [Ta(OC4H9)5] dissolved in solutions. The InTaO4 powders with a uniform grain size of 17.7 nm were successfully synthesized using the esterification method at a calcination temperature of 950 °C. A uniform InTaO4 thin film nearly 40 nm thick formed on an optical fiber at 1100 °C using the sol prepared by the esterification method. For the first time, InTaO4 was evaluated by the photocatalytic activity of CO2 photo reduction, which was conducted in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. Cocatalyst NiO was loaded on the surface of InTaO4 to further enhance the methanol yield. The methanol yields of NiO/InTaO4 by esterification method were significantly higher than those by solid-state fusion. The esterification method provided homogeneous mixing of Ta(OC4H9)5 and In(NO3)3, resulting in nano-sized InTaO4 with uniform crystallinity and superior photocatalytic activity.

Two important analytical means—theoretical bounds and homogenization techniques—have gained increasing attention and led to substantial progress in material research. Nevertheless, there is a lack of relating material microstructures to an entire theoretical bound and exploring the possibility of generating multiple microstructures for each property value. This paper aims to provide a microstructure diagram in relation to “bound B” constructed by translation and Weiner bounds. The inverse homogenization technique is used to seek for the optimal phase distribution within a base cell model to make the effective conductivity approach the “bound B” in two- or three-phase material cases. The design shows that the “bound B” is exactly attainable for two-phase composites even with single-length-scale microstructures. Although the multiphase translations bounds are well known to be asymptotically attainable on some parts, they still appear too roomy to be attained by single-length-scale composites. Our results showed a certain improvement in the attainability of single-length-scale structural composites when compared with new bounds established by [V. Nesi: Proc. R. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A125, 1219 (1995)], [V. Cherkaev: Variational Methods for Structural Optimization (Springer Verlag, New York, 2000)], and (N. Albin et al.: Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A463, 2031 (2007)]. Applicability of the translation bounds to the composites with high-contrast conductivities of phase compositions is also studied in this paper. Finally, we explore the multiple solutions to the optimal microstructures and categorize them into three classes in line with their topological resemblance, namely, spatially identical, unidirectionally identical, and bidirectionally different solutions.

Chemical solution deposition has been used to fabricate continuous ultrathin lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) films as thin as 20 nm. Further, multilayer capacitor structures with as many as 10 dielectric layers have been fabricated from these ultrathin PLZT films by alternating spin-coated dielectric layers with sputtered platinum electrodes. Integrating a photolithographically defined wet etch step to the fabrication process enabled the production of functional multilayer stacks with capacitance values exceeding 600 nF. Such ultrathin multilayer capacitors offer tremendous advantages for further miniaturization of integrated passive components.
