In the present work, for the first time, the inorganic Si-based materials lacking preexisting mixed bonds (O–Si–C, silicon in tetrahedral coordination bonded to both carbon and oxygen) have been successfully used as starting materials in a laser evaporation/condensation system for making hydrogenated silicon oxycarbide (Si–O–C–H) nanoparticles containing mixed bonds. The obtained materials are characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, and calorimetric measurements. Thermodynamically stable 5–10 nm amorphous Si–O–C–H particles with a complex structure containing a combination of pure and mixed Si-based tetrahedral units (SiOiC4−i; i = 0–4), and a considerable amount of Si–OH and C–H bonds have been synthesized. The nanoparticles possess high surface areas (428–467 m2/g), suggesting potential use in functionalities requiring high surface to volume ratios. In addition, making thermodynamically stable Si–O–C–H ceramics using a pathway different from the polymer route raises the likelihood of formation of similar carbon containing compounds in the planetary accretion and the Earth's interior.

Recent efforts to characterize the nanoscale structural and chemical modifications induced by energetic ion irradiation in nuclear materials have greatly benefited from the application of synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. Key to the study of actinide-bearing materials has been the use of small sample volumes, which are particularly advantageous, as the small quantities minimize the level of radiation exposure at the ion-beam and synchrotron user facility. This approach utilizes energetic heavy ions (energy range: 100 MeV–3 GeV) that pass completely through the sample thickness and deposit an almost constant energy per unit length along their trajectory. High energy x-rays (25–65 keV) from intense synchrotron light sources are then used in transmission geometry to analyze ion-induced structural and chemical modifications throughout the ion tracks. We describe in detail the experimental approach for utilizing synchrotron radiation (SR) to study the radiation response of a range of nuclear materials (e.g., ThO2 and Gd2TixZr2−xO7). Also addressed is the use of high-pressure techniques, such as the heatable diamond anvil cell, as a new means to expose irradiated materials to well-controlled high-temperature (up to 1000 °C) and/or high-pressure (up to 50 GPa) conditions. This is particularly useful for characterizing the annealing kinetics of irradiation-induced material modifications.

Effect of combined electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on the structures of a 3004 aluminum alloy ingot produced by horizontal direct chill casting was crystallographically investigated. The results showed that the structure was transformed from a mixture of equiaxed and fine columnar grains to coarse columnar grains with switching off the EMFs. With the EMFs the grain size is small and shows a uniform distribution, whereas without the EMFs it is increased and reveals inhomogeneous distribution on the cross section. Besides, a transition region composed of fine equiaxed grains appeared at the moment the EMFs were switched off (between the mixture and coarse columnar grains). Furthermore, the microstructure transformation is accompanied by a crystallographic orientation change from a preferred <100> orientation to a random orientation, and then to an intense <100> fiber texture. The structural and crystallographic transformations are mainly related to the forced convection in the melt due to the induced Lorentz force by the EMFs.

Arrangement and conformational interactions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and matrix upon electrospinning have been examined by surface-sensitive helium ion microscopy (He-IM). The enhanced surficial information is mostly a consequence of convoluted topographic sensitivity and reduced electrostatic charging, resulting from He ion–matter interactions. In addition, we have explored the correlation of findings by He-IM imaging with secondary electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy; the latter encouraged by similar sampling depth profiles in both techniques. This study provides further evidence of strong conformational relations between filler and matrix (which we have reported recently) and of the presence of a tightly bound polymeric phase interaction between the CNT and the bulk matrix. We conclude that both the absence of electrostatic charging and enhanced surface sensitivity in He-IM offer a remarkable opportunity to study electrospinning dynamics in nanocomposites.

The influence of cooling rates on the solidification and microstructure of rapidly solidified quasicrystal alloys with a nominal compositions of Mg57Zn37Y6 (at.%) prepared by melt spinning method was investigated. The microstructure, phase constitution, phase transition, and phase structure of the alloys were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that rapid solidification refines and homogenizes the microstructure of Mg57Zn37Y6 alloys, compared to the conventionally-cast master alloy. With the increasing cooling rate of rapid solidification, the thickness of the ribbon decreases greatly and a larger amount of I-phase can be formed. α-Mg, MgZn, and icosahedral phases are found in the as-cast alloy, but the MgZn phase is absent from rapidly solidified alloys. The I-phase in both as-cast and rapidly solidified alloys can precipitate directly from the melt during the solidification process. A higher cooling rate can lead to a large degree of supercooling, resulting in a decreased phase transition temperature and a large number of icosahedral short-range orders (ISROs). ISROs can act as templates in liquid and promote the nucleation of I-phase.

The Seebeck coefficient is an important parameter of thermoelectric materials, which is routinely measured by commercial or home-made equipment based on different methods. However, due to various temperature offsets in the measurement, the determination of temperature gradient can be inaccurate, leading to a large uncertainty in Seebeck coefficient. To elucidate the influence of the inaccurate temperature gradient on the determination of Seebeck coefficient, an error analysis has been performed on a commercial system. Several potential factors that may affect the establishment of temperature gradient were discussed in detail. A comparison between the single point method and the slope method was made to verify which is more accurate to calculate the Seebeck coefficient from the raw measurement data. It is suggested that the slope method is more preferable and the single point method can also be accurate enough when a relatively large temperature gradient is adopted.

Nanocolloidal crystals (NCCs) have promising applications in optical and photonic devices. However, it is critical to mechanically reinforce NCCs for device reliability, since as-synthesized NCCs are fragile due to weak interparticle bonding. Thermal sintering is currently the most common reinforcement technique; however, this method could induce serious cracking and is not suitable for temperature-sensitive materials. In this study, by characterizing silica NCCs reinforced through sintering and alumina atomic layer deposition (ALD), we find that the ALD treatment is much more effective for hardening, stiffening, and more importantly toughening NCCs. Thermally sintered NCCs are prone to indentation-induced cracking due to large residual tensile stress, significantly impairing the toughness. In contrast, the ALD treatment toughens NCCs by much over 300%. Our finding provides insights for reinforcing and toughening various nanoparticle-based and nanoporous materials.

The Mn-steel matrix composite locally reinforced with in situ TiC–TiB2 ceramic particulate was successfully fabricated using a thermal explosion-casting route in a Cu–Ti–B4C system with various B4C particle sizes. With the increase of B4C particle size, the ignition temperature increased, the combustion temperature decreased, and the size of the TiC and TiB2 ceramic particulates became smaller. The hardness, friction coefficient, and wear resistance of the composite were higher than those of the Mn-steel matrix. With the increase of B4C particle size, the size of the TiC and TiB2 ceramic particulates fabricated in the local reinforcing region decreased, the interface bonding between reinforcing region and matrix became poor, and the number of pores in the local reinforcing region increased. Moreover, the composite with ∼3.5 μm B4C showed the best antiwear property. At a low load of 20 N, the dominant wear mechanisms of the Mn-steel matrix composite were microcutting and abrasive wear. While, at a high load of 80 N, the dominant wear mechanisms were microcutting and adhesion wear associated with the formation of delamination layer.

Two kinds of heavy-alloying β-type TiAl-based alloys Ti44Al6Nb1.0Cr2.0V (A1) and Ti44Al6Nb1.0Cr2.0V0.15Y0.1B (A2) are newly designed. They are prepared by vacuum consumable melting (VCM) and cold crucible directional solidification (CCDS). Via the theoretical analysis and tentative experiment, five alternative heat treatment (HT) schedules are proposed and studied that the corresponding microstructure and room temperature (RT) tensile property are investigated, and finally the optimized HT schedules are acquired. After HT5 (heat preservation in β phase region and at 1290 °C, and then ladder cooling), A2 alloy cast by VCM exhibits a better tensile property with average elongation of 1.20%. For the two CCDS ingots, after HT3 (mainly annealing at 1280 °C), B2 phase and (B2 + γ) blocky morphology are reduced, the columnar grains and small angle lamellas are reserved, and the tensile property also has a moderate improvement.

High performance materials that can withstand radiation, heat, multiaxial stresses, and corrosive environment are necessary for the deployment of advanced nuclear energy systems. Nondestructive in situ experimental techniques utilizing high energy x-rays from synchrotron sources can be an attractive set of tools for engineers and scientists to investigate the structure–processing–property relationship systematically at smaller length scales and help build better material models. In this study, two unique and interconnected experimental techniques, namely, simultaneous small-angle/wide-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and far-field high-energy diffraction microscopy (FF-HEDM) are presented. The changes in material state as Fe-based alloys are heated to high temperatures or subject to irradiation are examined using these techniques.
