Enthalpies of formation and heat capacities are key parameters for thermodynamic assessments using the CALPHAD method and were determined in this work in the ZrO2–Y0.5Ta0.5O2 quasibinary system. ZrxY0.5−x/2Ta0.5−x/2O2 samples with compositions in the monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2-based solid solutions (0.65 ≤ x ≤ 1) as well as the two monoclinic (M′ and M) polymorphs of the Y0.5Ta0.5O2-based solid solutions (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) were investigated. The enthalpies of the two monoclinic polymorphs M′ and M are essentially the same within experimental uncertainty and have significant energetic stability (enthalpies of formation near −45 kJ/mol) relative to their component oxides. The monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia-rich solid solutions have little energetic stability with respect to ZrO2, Ta2O5, and Y2O3 and presumably owe their existence to the configurational entropy. The heat capacities of M′ and M phase are similar and can be estimated from their constituent oxides using the Neumann–Kopp rule.

The oxidation behavior of two percentages of TiB + TiC reinforced Ti–6Al–4V composites derived from Ti–B4C–C and Ti–TiB2–TiC systems was investigated at 873–1073 K for 320 h in air. The oxidation weight gain curves of the (TiB + TiC)/Ti–6Al–4V composites at 973 K basically obey parabolic law, while those at 873 and 1073 K mainly follow linear law and parabolic-linear law, respectively. The oxide layers of the composites are predominately found to be rutile TiO2, Al2O3, and the mixture of V2O3 and V2O5. The oxidation layers turn thinner with increasing the nominal volume fraction of reinforcements in the (TiB + TiC)/Ti–6Al–4V composites. Moreover, according to the calculation results of reaction index (n) and effective activation energy (Qeff) and the analyses of cross-sections of the oxidation layers, the oxidation resistance ability of the composites from Ti–TiB2–TiC system is higher than that from Ti–B4C–C system while employing the same sintering temperature and nominal volume fraction of reinforcement.

A series of metal oxides (MnFeOx, MnCrOx, MnTiOx, and MnFeTiOx) supported on attapulgite (ATP) were synthesized by coprecipitation for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3. Then, they were subjected to appropriate characterizations for their properties (XRD, TEM, BET, XPS, etc.). The catalytic activity of MnFeTiOx/ATP catalyst was over 95% NOx conversion within a wide temperature window between of 175 and 300 °C, and 88% N2 selectivity. Moreover, MnFeTiOx/ATP presented excellent potassium resistance relative to the traditional V–W–Ti catalyst, and its denitration performance was significantly improved. The NOx conversion rate could be restored to nearly 90% at 210 °C after removing potassium via washing of K–MnFeTiOx/ATP. In addition, the MnFeTiOx/ATP showed better SO2 resistance and stability than the traditional V–W–Ti catalyst. Therefore, the MnFeTiOx/ATP catalyst has been proved to have broad prospects in NH3-SCR.

Bainite transformation in steels is influenced by various factors. In the present work, bainite transformation in medium carbon high alloyed steel was investigated focusing on the influence of preexisting VC carbides on the morphology and transformation kinetics of the subsequently formed bainite. Hot-work die steels were held at 950 °C for various times to precipitate VC carbides, then rapidly cooled from 950 to 350 °C and held at this temperature for the bainite transformation. It is found that the bainite transformation was obviously accelerated by the preexisting VC carbides precipitated at the austenite region. The precipitation of carbides leads to a decrease in carbon concentration in the matrix, which decreases the effective activation energy and increases the highest temperature for the nucleation of bainite. Besides, bainite was observed to grow beside the VC carbides. It suggests that the VC carbides in the matrix act as nucleation sites for the bainite transformation. In the specimens, the bainite transformation is accelerated, and a higher fraction of bainite is formed when there are carbides in the matrix.

Nano/mesoporous carbon was prepared from pine wood sawdust via the pretreatment of acid and hydrothermal process, followed by potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation. This study proposed the enhancement of activated carbon (AC) adsorption capacity by utilizing the vacant sites and phenomena of opposite charge attraction via multilayer adsorption of Cr(VI) ions and dyes with positive and negative charges. On the first layer, the maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) ions, methylene blue (MB) molecules, and acid red 18 (AR18) molecules onto AC were found to be 7.91 mg/g, 476.19 mg/g, and 434.78 mg/g, respectively. For multiple adsorption, after Cr(VI) ions uptake saturation, the sequential adsorption of MB and AR18 on the second layer, the maximum adsorption capacity, reached 322.58 mg/g and 333.33 mg/g. After MB and AR18 uptake saturation, the maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity reached 2.92 mg/g and 4.39 mg/g.

Sn–Sb alloy is an ideal candidate for lead-free solder; however, its performance has been inferior to that of Sn–Pb alloy. Here, the authors used ab initio molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the interatomic interaction in Sn–Sb-based lead-free solders. By calculating the electron density distribution, bond population, and partial density of states, the authors found that the Sn–Sb bonds are a mixture of nonlocalized metal and localized covalent bonds. The covalent bond between Sn and Sb is easy to break at higher temperatures, so Sn–Sb (6.4 wt%) had better fluidity than other studied Sn–Sb alloys. Furthermore, adding Cu or Ag into Sn–Sb alloys can decrease the strength of covalent bonds and stabilize the metal bonds, which improves the metallicity and wettability of the Sn–Sb–Cu and Sn–Sb–Cu–Ag systems when the temperature increases. These results are all in good agreement with experimental findings and have significant value for the development of new solder alloys.

For achieving flame-retardant AZX912 magnesium alloy with superior mechanical properties, cast ingots were solution-treated at different temperatures of 420–525 °C prior to extrusion at 280 °C. With increasing solution treatment temperature, brittle Al2Ca intermetallic compound changed from a network-like morphology to a spheroidized shape, with an increase in hardness and became unbroken during extrusion. As the solution treatment temperature increased, cracking of Al2Ca particles during tensile deformation tended to be restricted due to hardening and spheroidizing behaviors, and tensile elongation of extruded alloys significantly enhanced from 11.2 to 19.2%. High mechanical strength was maintained with an improvement in ductility when increasing the solution treatment temperature up to 510 °C. The extruded alloy solution-treated at 510 °C exhibited a superior balance between mechanical strength and ductility, with a high ultimate tensile strength of 367 MPa and a good elongation of 16.8%.

Bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to the synergistic interaction between metal components. In this work, the thermal process in which the reducing agent is not expensive or hazardous as those in traditional methods was employed to prepare alloy Ag–Cu NPs. The molar ratio between Ag and Cu was varied from 1:9 to 9:1. Nearly monodisperse NPs with alloy structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy In comparison with monometallic Ag and Cu NPs, the alloyed Ag–Cu NPs showed better monodispersity, especially when the ratio between Ag and Cu was 1:1. Moreover, the alloyed Ag–Cu NPs exhibited enhanced resistance to electromigration and oxidation, the respective problem of pure Ag and Cu. The alloyed Ag–Cu NPs also exhibited improved properties than a mixture of Ag–Cu NPs. This study should serve as the foundation for exploring high performance alloyed bimetallic NPs.

Mo, Zr, and Y with low diffusion coefficients in Al matrix were used to improve the high-temperature properties of the Al–5.8Cu–0.3Mn–0.2Mg alloy. The effects of these microalloying elements on the microstructures of the Al–5.8Cu–0.3Mn–0.2Mg alloy were investigated with the aid of optical microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The HRTEM images and selected area electron diffraction patterns indicated that L12-Al3(Zr, Y), Al3Zr, Al3Y, and Al12Mo could precipitate in the process of solid solution treatment after adding Mo, Zr, and Y. These Mo-, Zr-, and Y-containing precipitates were stable at high temperatures and could slow the coarsening rate of θ′ precipitates at high temperatures. The tensile strength of the Al–5.8Cu–0.3Mn–0.2Mg alloy modified by Mo, Zr, and Y microalloying elements was improved significantly at both room and high temperatures. The strengthening mechanisms were discussed in detail.

The preparation of three-dimensional honeycomb nitrogen-doped carbon materials (3D-HNCMs) which can be used as electrode materials for supercapacitors is reported. The composites with the 3D honeycomb structure exhibited better electrochemical performance, and the structure and properties were proved by various means, such as SEM, TEM, IR, N2 sorption, XRD and XPS. Used as electrode materials for supercapacitors in the KOH electrolyte, 3D-HNCMs displayed a significantly high specific capacitance (409 F/g at a current of 0.5 A/g). Moreover, the 3D-HNCM electrode exhibited superior electrochemical performance, such as excellent cycling stability (98% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), a maximum energy density of 15.37 W h/kg, a maximum power density of 40.3 kW/kg, and low equivalent series resistance (2.1 Ω). Particularly, the electrochemical characteristic of 3D-HNCMs could be attributed to the synergistic effect of a high surface area, unique microporous and mesoporous structure, and nitrogen atom doping. These carbon materials with unique structure are promising electrode materials for future supercapacitor application.

Three different high entropy-alloys consisting of six elements (Ti, Zr, V, Cr, Ni, and Fe) with varying Fe content were synthesized by using the RF induction melting technique. All the as-cast, slow-cooled, and rapidly quenched alloys exhibit C14 Laves phase, and it is found to be stable at high temperature. A lattice contraction has been observed with the addition of Fe. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis of a single-phase high-entropy complex intermetallic compound in the hexanary alloy system. It has been shown that the thermodynamic calculations following Miedema’s approach and the parametric approach utilizing several descriptors comprising configurational entropy, mixing enthalpy, atomic size mismatch, electronegativity, and valence electron concentration favor the stability of the high-entropy multicomponent Laves phase.

In this paper, the influence of strain rate on the mechanical behavior of high-strength low-alloy (HC420LA) steel were studied. Quasi-static and dynamic tensile experiments were performed with strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 500 s−1 at room temperature. The digital image correlation technique was used to obtain the full-field strain. The experimental results showed that HC420LA steel exhibited positive strain rate sensitivity. Based on experimental results, the modified Johnson–Cook (J–C) model was used to model the constitutive behavior of HC420LA steel. Predictions of the standard and modified J–C models were compared using standard statistical parameters. The modified J–C model showed better agreement with the experimental data. Then, numerical simulation of the representative tensile test at a strain rate of 100 s−1 was performed using the finite element code LS-DYNA. Good correlation between the experimental and numerical simulation results was achieved.

Serrated flow is one important characteristic of shear bands through which metallic glasses (MGs) accommodate plastic deformation. Serrated flow can be affected by intrinsic properties such as elastic modulus or extrinsic variables such as strain rate. However, the influences of pre-deformation and interfaces on serrated flow are less well understood. In this study, by using in situ micropillar compression inside a scanning electron microscope, we show that pre-deformation (consisting of cyclic loading/unloading below the nominal elastic limit) suppresses serrated flows in amorphous-CuNb but enhances serrated flows in amorphous-CuZr at both high and low strain rates. Moreover, layer interfaces in Cu/amorphous-CuNb multilayers mitigate serrated flows, and the average stress drop and strain duration associated with shear banding process can be tailored. Strain accommodation and energy dissipation via shear banding have clear impact on serrated flows. This study provides new perspectives on tailoring serrated flows and enhancing plastic deformation of MGs.

Metal oxides are promising candidates as the anodes of next-generation lithium ion batteries. However, the low electronic conductivities hinder their practical applications. Herein, through a facile calcination process using ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3) as the N source, the nitrogen heteroelement was introduced into the ZnO/CoO micro-/nanospheres, which greatly improves the conductivity of the composites. As the lithium-ion battery anode, the N-doped ZnO/CoO micro-/nanosphere demonstrates much enhanced electrochemical performance. It displays a high initial capacity of 911.8 mA h/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g and long-term cycling stability, with a reversible capacity of 977.8 mA h/g remained after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g. Furthermore, the N-doped ZnO/CoO composite presents an outstanding rate performance, with 605 mA h/g remained even at 5 A/g. The excellent electrochemical properties make N-doped ZnO/CoO micro-/nanospheres a promising candidate as high-performance anodes for next-generation rechargeable LIBs.
