This work is focused on determining whether two graphene derivatives: graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) can be used alone as a component of anticancer therapy. In this paper, we present the synthesis GO and RGO, their physicochemical characterization as well as an evaluation of their cytotoxic properties on cancer (HepG2 and MCF-7) and non-malignant (clone-9 and HMF) cells. We demonstrated that both tested graphene derivatives have a high affinity to cancer cells. We showed that cytotoxic properties of GO and RGO were different depending on the type of solvent in which they were prepared. Additionally, we observed that cytotoxic properties of GO and RGO were different depending on the origin of the cells (liver and breast) and the form of graphene material (GO and RGO). We showed that GO and RGO can be potential, selectively materials which in future can found application in anticancer therapy.

Deformation twinning is a prevalent plastic deformation mode in hexagonal close-packed (HCP) materials, such as magnesium, titanium, and zirconium, and their alloys. Experimental observations indicate that these twins occur heterogeneously across the polycrystalline microstructure during deformation. Morphological and crystallographic distribution of twins in a deformed microstructure, or the so-called twinning microstructure, significantly controls material deformation behavior, ductility, formability, and failure response. Understanding the development of the twinning microstructure at the grain scale can benefit design efforts to optimize microstructures of HCP materials for specific high-performance structural applications. This article reviews recent research efforts that aim to relate the polycrystalline microstructure with the development of its twinning microstructure through knowledge of local stress fields, specifically local stresses produced by twins and at twin/grain–boundary intersections on the formation and thickening of twins, twin transmission across grain boundaries, twin–twin junction formation, and secondary twinning.

Nanocrystallites of pure and mixed ternary ferrites, NiFe2O4 (NiF), CuFe2O4 (CuF), CoFe2O4 (CoF), Ni0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4 (CuNiF), Ni0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 (NiCoF), and Cu0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 (CuCoF) were prepared using the auto-combustion method employing urea as a fuel. The obtained materials were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron miscroscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and BET techniques. The elemental composition of the prepared samples was checked by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. XRD indicated that the as-synthesized samples exhibit a pure spinel crystal structure. The samples have crystallite sizes ranged from 12 to 47 nm. SEM and TEM analyses showed almost spherical morphology for all ferrite particles. The M–H curves recorded using the VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer) technique showed ferromagnetic hysteresis loop for all the samples investigated. The ferrite samples were tested to be used as a supercapacitor electrode material. It is found that the measured specific capacitance of the ferrite electrodes increases according to CuCoF > NiCoF > CoF > NiCuF > CuF > NiF. The CuCoF sample showed the greatest specific capacitance of 220 F/g at discharging current density l of A/g with, an energy density of 34.72 Wh/kg and power density of 605 W/kg. The magnetic properties were also measured for the obtained nanoparticles.

SmTaO4 ceramics have excellent high-temperature phase stabilities and mechanical properties and show great potential for use as next-generation thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials. CeO2–SmTaO4 ceramics are prepared via high-temperature solid–state reaction. It retains a single monoclinic phase structure. Ce4+ was reduced to Ce3+ by high-temperature deoxidation, and the Ce3+ ions substitute for an equal number of Sm3+ ions. The CeO2–SmTaO4 ceramics had lower thermal conductivities [1.09–2.75 W/(m K)] than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) [2.1–2.7 W/(m K)] at 100–800 °C, which decreased dramatically with increasing temperature. SmTaO4 doped with 2% CeO2 had lower thermal conductivity [1.09 W/(m K), 800 °C] than SmTaO4 [1.42 W/(m K), 800 °C] and 2% ZrO2-doped SmTaO4 ceramics [1.22 W/(m K), 800 °C]. The low thermal conductivity is attributed to Ce3+ substitution for an equal number of Sm3+ ions, and because Ce3+ ions are the strongest phonon scattering centers, they can decrease the phonon mean free path effectively. The thermal expansion coefficient of 8% CeO2–SmTaO4 ceramics is approximately 10.3 × 10−6 K−1 at 1200 °C, which is slightly higher than that of both YSZ (10.0 × 10−6 K−1) and SmTaO4 (9.58 × 10−6 K−1). The outstanding thermophysical properties indicate that CeO2–SmTaO4 ceramics are potential TBC materials.

In this work, a Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr–xO Gum Metal with two significantly different oxygen levels (388 and 3570 ppm) was investigated during deformation. The alloys were compressed during in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction using three different strain rates, 10−4, 10−3, and 10−1 s−1, in order to evaluate their influence on phase stability and mechanical properties. The influence of oxygen on the deformation process was also studied. Deformation takes place by twinning, stress-induced, and reverse martensitic transformation and was observed, for some samples, a spinodal decomposition of the β-phase during elastic deformation. The mechanical properties were similar for the different rates employed when considering the same oxygen level. The alloy with a higher amount of oxygen, however, showed a substantial increase in mechanical strength, with a yield strength of around 680 MPa, which is more than three times higher than for the specimen with 388 ppm of oxygen.

Graphene-based flexible and wearable supercapacitors have been produced by wet spinning, in which organic solvent coagulating bath was prerequisite and spacers were usually incorporated to improve the electrochemical property but sacrificing the mechanical property. In this work, a nonorganic solvent spinning technology named as interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation (IPC), which was based on the spontaneous self-assembly of two oppositely charged polyelectrolyte solutions/suspensions to form continuous fibers on drawing in their interfaces, was proposed to fabricate graphene fiber–shaped electrodes for supercapacitors. Due to the excellent mechanical performance and hydrophilicity, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were added to serve as an efficient reinforcing agent and spacer of graphene fiber electrodes. Consequently, the mechanical performance and specific capacitance of the fibers were improved but electrical conductivity was declined. Taking overall consideration, CNF/rGO60 fiber electrode possessed a superior integrated performance with a capacitance of 182.6 F/g, tensile strength of 480 MPa, and electrical conductivity of 5538.7 S/m. The IPC spinning provided an environmentally friendly strategy for the fabrication of fiber-shaped functional devices.

We investigated high-resistivity cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe):In single crystals annealed in hydrogen to reveal the passivation effect of defects. An overall reduction in the concentration of defect levels induced by annealing was obviously observed by thermally stimulated current measurements. There is a large decrease by 56.51% in the concentration of secondly ionized Cd vacancies (T3) after hydrogenation. The concentration of firstly ionized Cd vacancies (T2) was a little bit lower (17.99%) in the hydrogenated CZT crystals. The formation of neutral InH complex and lower occupation of VCd by In dopant would result in a significant decrease (68.31%) in the trap density of ${\rm In}_{\rm Cd}^ +$ related shallow donor (T1) after hydrogenation. The bulk resistivity was calculated from I–V characteristic curves to be ~1.97 × 1010 Ωcm before annealing and ~1.78 × 1010 Ωcm after annealing. Hall measurements also reveal n-type conduction for the hydrogenated crystals. Electron mobility was fitted to be about 110 cm2/Vs before annealing and 488 cm2/Vs after annealing, demonstrating better carrier transport properties. Electron mobility-lifetime product could be fitted to be about 3.60 × 10−4 cm2/V before annealing and 5.45 × 10−4 cm2/V after annealing, demonstrating better detector performances.

In this study, coatings containing Ca and P elements on Ti6Al4V alloy were fabricated by micro-arc oxidation at different applied voltages. Subsequently, evaluation of the phase structure, morphology, element composition, corrosion mechanism, and tribocorrosion behavior of these coatings was performed. The results showed that the coatings consisted of rutile TiO2 and anatase TiO2. The ratio of rutile/anatase, surface roughness, and hardness increase with the increase of applied voltage. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicated the corrosion resistance of coatings in simulated body fluid of 400 V > 380 V > 420 V. The open circuit potential of sample 400 V declined during the tribocorrosion test. Sample 420 V possessed the highest wear volume after the tribocorrosion process. The tribocorrosion mechanism of samples 380 and 420 V was mainly confirmed as the wear effect, and the decline of corrosion resistance due to the micro-cracks formed during the abrasive wear of the coating accounts for the tribocorrosion mechanism of sample 400 V.

Al-based composites with micrometer and submicro-TiB2 reinforcements (1 wt%) have been produced by selective laser melting (SLM) from mixed powder under different processing conditions. The results show that the densification level of SLM-processed composite with submicro-TiB2 particles (>99.0%) was 0.3–2.4% larger than that of micrometer TiB2-reinforced composite under the same processing conditions. The distribution of Si precipitates in the matrix experienced a transform from continuous cellular to directional line-like morphology with reinforcement size decreasing from micron to submicron. The reinforcement size added in the matrix also exhibited a critical influence on preferred orientation and grain size of matrix. The SLM-processed composites exhibited improved tensile strength and ductility with a decrease of reinforcement size. High tensile strength of ∼400 MPa and elongation of ∼3.6% were obtained for the fine TiB2-reinforced samples, increasing by 6 and 13% compared with that of micro-TiB2–added samples, respectively.

Variation of stress across the length and thickness of a cantilever during creep allows obtaining multiple pairs of strain rates and stress under steady-state condition. This work applies digital image correlation (DIC) and conjugate analytical models to obtain several such “strain rate–stress” pairs during steady-state creep by testing a single cantilever at a constant applied load. Furthermore, these strain rate–stress pairs are used to accurately determine the stress exponent of the material (e.g., Al and Pb). In addition, an empirical observation of plotting strain rate as a function of stress at fixed strain during primary creep for estimating stress exponent is extended to bending creep, wherein strain rates of the points in the cantilever lying on an iso-strain contour were plotted against the moment at the point to determine stress exponent. This study, thereby, proves that the “bending creep–DIC” combination is a high throughput test methodology for studying steady-state creep.

The purpose of this study was to construct a glycyrrhetinic acid (GA)-mediated, breakable, intracellular, nanoscale drug-delivery carrier via amide and esterification reactions. The structures were identified by Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectrophotometry. The compatibility and safety of the carrier were evaluated using hemolysis and cytotoxicity tests. The GA-copolymer micelle was prepared using the solvent evaporation method. FTIR and 1H-NMR detection demonstrated the successful construction of the polymer. No hemolysis occurred in any concentration of polymer within 3 h, and the hemolysis rate was less than 5%. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) experimental results showed that the novel polymer reduced the cell survival rate and had significant cytotoxic effects. The blank nanoparticles were liquid with light blue opalescence. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the empty micelles were uniform spheres, with an average size of 62 nm and a zeta potential of −13 mV. The novel GA-mediated polymeric carrier material developed here has the potential to effectively kill human SMMC-7721 cancer cells within 3 days when the dose is above 500 ug/mL.

We report the sputter deposition of Cu-7V and Cu-27V (at.%) alloy films in an attempt to yield a “clean” alloy to investigate nanocrystalline stability. Films grown in high vacuum chambers can mitigate processing contaminates which convolute the identification of nanocrystalline stability mechanism(s). The initial films were very clean with carbon and oxygen contents ranging between ~0.01 and 0.38 at.%. Annealing at 400 °C/1 h facilitated the clustering of vanadium at high-angle grain boundary triple junctions. At 800 °C/1 h annealing, the Cu-7V film lost its nanocrystalline grain sizes with the vanadium partitioned to the free surface; the Cu-27V retained its nanocrystalline grains with vanadium clusters in the matrix, but surface solute segregation was present. Though the initial alloy and vacuum annealing retained the low contamination levels sought, the high surface area-to-volume ratio of the film, coupled with high segregation tendencies, enabled this system to phase separate in such a manner that the stability mechanisms that were to be studied were lost at high temperatures. This illustrates obstacles in using thin films to address nanocrystalline stability.

With the aim of optimizing the traditional construction process of a fiber-reinforced lattice structure, the present study modified a previously proposed technique called “truss stacking and node gluing.” To explicitly investigate the structural compressive properties (compressive strength and compressive modulus under the flat pressure), the geometrical parameters, material properties, and topological configuration were examined in detail. Additionally, the present study conducted the relevant theoretical analyses to predict the possible destruction modes and compressive properties. All the samples were tested with a universal testing machine at a rate of 2 mm/min using the ASTM-C365 standard. The results showed that compressive properties are positively related to the relative density and negatively related to the aspect ratio. It was also found that the compressive performance for different materials was in the following order (from good to bad): cotton-fiber reinforced epoxy composite (CREC), jute-fiber reinforced epoxy composite (JREC), and nylon-fiber reinforced epoxy composite (NREC). Furthermore, the mixed topological structure performed as well as the square structure, and they both overmatched the diamond structure. Lastly, the accuracy of the theoretical analysis was evaluated by comparing the theoretical values and the experimental values.

The remarkable progress in additive manufacturing has promoted the design of architected materials with mechanical properties that go beyond those of conventional solids. Their realization, however, leads to architectures with process-induced defects that can jeopardize mechanical and functional performance. In this work, we investigate experimentally and numerically as-manufactured defects in Ti–6Al–4V octet truss lattice materials fabricated with selective laser melting. Four sets of as-manufactured defects, including surface, microstructural, morphological, and material property imperfections, are characterized experimentally at given locations and orientations. Within the characterized defects, material property and morphological defects are quantified statistically using a combination of atomic force microscopy and micro–computed tomography to generate representative models that incorporate individual defects and their combination. The models are used to assess the sensitivity to as-manufactured defects. Then, the study is expanded by tuning defects amplitude to elucidate the role of the magnitude of as-designed defects on the mechanical properties of the lattice material.

Modern electronics have been geared toward exploring novel electronic materials that can encompass a broad set of unusual functionalities absent in conventional platforms. In this regard, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors are highly promising, owing to their large mechanical resilience coupled with superior transport properties and van der Waals (vdW) attraction-enabled relaxed assembly. Moreover, 2D TMD heterolayers based on chemically distinct constituent layers exhibit even more intriguing properties beyond their mono-component counterparts, which can materialize only when they are manufactured on a technologically practical wafer-scale. This mini-review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in exploring wafer-scale 2D TMD heterolayers of various kinds. It extensively surveys a variety of manufacturing strategies and discusses their scientific working principles, resulting 2D TMD heterolayers, their material properties, and device applications. Moreover, it offers extended discussion on remaining challenges and future outlooks toward further improving the material quality of 2D TMD heterolayers in both material and manufacturing aspects.

Gas turbine engines for fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft are operated in a variety of harsh weather environments ranging from arctic, volcanic zones, to desert conditions. Operation under these degraded conditions leads to the undesired entrainment of complex particulates resulting in drastic performance losses. Hence, there is a critical need to understand the governing mechanisms to inform the development of durable thermal and environmental barrier coatings. The objective of the current work is to present a novel multiscale physics-based approach to study two-phase flows that take into account the underpinning particle transport and deposition dynamics. Sessile droplet models are presented and used to compute the contact angle at high temperatures and compared with experiments. The study also investigates the sensitivity of deposition patterns to the Stokes number and the results identify local vulnerability regions. The analysis suggests that particle size distributions and the initial trajectories of the particles are critically important in predicting the final deposition pattern.

Amorphous carbon, germanium oxide, and 2-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) are considered as promising materials for advanced nanoscale device fabrication processes and electronic devices, owing to their extraordinary characteristics. Deposition of these materials using ALD can overcome the limitations of current deposition techniques, including poor step coverage and wafer-scale uniformity, and uncontrollable stoichiometry. Despite these advantages, there has been a lack of research into these materials due to the absence of suitable precursors or optimized processes. In this review, we focus on these nonconventional materials, which have rarely been studied using ALD. The latest research progress and future outlook on these materials grown by ALD will be highlighted, with a particular focus on the applications of future nanoscale device fabrication processes and new concepts in device fabrication which could lead to a paradigm shift in electronics.

The formation of shear bands during hot deformation of a two-phase (α2 + γ) titanium aluminide and its consequences on dynamics softening has been investigated. The starting material consists of a colony of lamellar grains along with the segregated vanadium and niobium which was subjected to hot deformation in the temperature range 1000–1175 °C at the strain rate 10 s−1. Microstructures of the deformed samples indicate that, with increase in the deformation temperature, the orientation of shear bands changes. Moreover, the extent of dynamic recrystallization also increases with deformation temperature. The softening behaviour and crystallographic orientation change within lamellae during hot deformation have been explored. The nucleation of newly recrystallized grains has been observed at twin–parent grain boundary and within the twined γ phase. Lamellae of the γ and α2 phase have been also observed to be twisted and tilted, leading to the band formations under the load, whose mechanisms have also been explored in the present study.

This paper reviews the recent development of fabrication methods of porous metals with open-channels. The open-channel metals are fabricated through powder sintering or solidification technique. The template wires are embedded in the sintered or solidified metals, such as aluminum, copper, titanium and its alloys, which are then removed by chemical dissolution or extraction methods. The hole size, hole length and porosity are uniquely controlled by thickness, length and number of template metallic wires, respectively. The pore size ranges from 102 to several 103 μm in diameter. The open-channel metals are characterized by a large aspect ratio of the length to the diameter of the holes in metals. Furthermore, the techniques can fabricate spiral and V-shaped pores in metals. Feasibility and usefulness of each fabrication method are discussed. The methodology for producing the open-channel metals is expected to provide expanded opportunities for application technologies such as functional materials like heat sinks and sound absorbers and light-weight structural materials.
