Combining Kasparov's generalization of a theorem of Voiculescu and Cuntz's description of KK-theory in terms of quasihomomorphisms (sections one and two), we give a simple construction of the Kasparov product (section three). This construction will be generalized in [Gre] to give a version of the product for so-called locally convex Kasparov modules over locally convex algebras in order to treat products of certain universal cycles.

We find upper bounds on the essential dimension of the moduli stack of parabolic vector bundles over a curve. When there is no parabolic structure, we improve the known upper bound on the essential dimension of the usual moduli stack. Our calculations also give lower bounds on the essential dimension of the semistable locus inside the moduli stack of vector bundles of rank r and degree d without parabolic structure.

This article gives a complete classification of generically split projective homogeneous varieties. This project was begun in our previous article [PS10], but here we remove all restrictions on the characteristic of the base field, give a new uniform proof that works in all cases and in particular includes the case PGO2n+ which was missing in [PS10].

We present a definition of spectral flow for any norm closed ideal J in any von Neumann algebra N. Given a path of selfadjoint operators in N which are invertible in N/J, the spectral flow produces a class in Ko(J).

Given a semifinite spectral triple (A, H, D) relative to (N, τ) with A separable, we construct a class [D] ∈ KK1(A, K(N)). For a unitary u ∈ A, the von Neumann spectral flow between D and u*Du is equal to the Kasparov product [u]A[D], and is simply related to the numerical spectral flow, and a refined C*-spectral flow.

In [TV], Bertrand Toën and Michel Vaquié define a scheme theory for a closed monoidal category (,⊗, 1) One of the key ingredients of this theory is the definition of a Zariski topology on the category of commutative monoidal objects in . The purpose of this article is to prove that under some hypotheses, Zariski open subobjects of affine schemes can be classified almost as in the usual case of rings (ℤ-mod,⊗,ℤ). The main result states that for any commutative monoidal object A in , the locale of Zariski open subobjects of the affine scheme Spec(A) is associated to a topological space whose points are prime ideals of A and whose open subsets are defined by the same formula as in rings. As a consequence, we can compare the notions of scheme over in [D] and in [TV].

Multirings are objects like rings but with multi-valued addition. In the present paper we extend results of E. Becker and others concerning orderings of higher level on fields and rings to orderings of higher level on hyperfields and multirings and, in the process of doing this, we establish higher level analogs of the results previously obtained by the second author. In particular, we introduce a class of multirings called ℓ-real reduced multirings, define a natural reflection A ⇝ Qℓ-red(A) from the category of multirings satisfying to the full subcategory of ℓ-real reduced multirings, and provide an elementary first-order description of these objects. The relationship between ℓ-real reduced hyperfields and the spaces of signatures defined by Mulcahy and Powers is also examined.

A related spectral sequence converging to K*+1(Aζ) (the real or complex topological K-theory) allows us to conclude that if B is Bott-stable, (i.e., if π*(GLoB) → K*+1(B) is an isomorphism for all * > 0) then so is Aζ.

This article presents results which are consistent with conjectures about Leibniz (co)homology for discrete groups, due to J. L. Loday in 2003. We prove that rack cohomology has properties very close to the properties expected for the conjectural Leibniz cohomology. In particular, we prove the existence of a graded dendriform algebra structure on rack cohomology, and we construct a graded associative algebra morphism H•(−) → HR•(−) from group cohomology to rack cohomology which is injective for ● = 1.

We describe derived moduli functors for a range of problems involving schemes and quasi-coherent sheaves, and give cohomological conditions for them to be representable by derived geometric n-stacks. Examples of problems represented by derived geometric 1-stacks are derived moduli of polarised projective varieties, derived moduli of vector bundles, and derived moduli of abelian varieties.

For a 2-category 2C we associate a notion of a principal 2C-bundle. For the 2-category of 2-vector spaces, in the sense of M.M. Kapranov and V.A. Voevodsky, this gives the 2-vector bundles of N.A. Baas, B.I. Dundas and J. Rognes. Our main result says that the geometric nerve of a good 2-category is a classifying space for the associated principal 2-bundles. In the process of proving this we develop powerful machinery which may be useful in further studies of 2-categorical topology. As a corollary we get a new proof of the classification of principal bundles. Another 2-category of 2-vector spaces has been proposed by J.C. Baez and A.S. Crans. A calculation using our main theorem shows that in this case the theory of principal 2-bundles splits, up to concordance, as two copies of ordinary vector bundle theory. When 2C is a cobordism type 2-category we get a new notion of cobordism-bundles which turns out to be classified by the Madsen–Weiss spaces.

For a field k of cohomological dimension d we prove that the groups , (l, car.k) = 1, are birational invariants of smooth projective geometrically integral varieties over k of dimension n. Using the Kato conjecture, which has been recently established by Kerz and Saito [18], we obtain a similar result over a finite field for the groups . We relate one of these invariants with the cokernel of the l-adic cycle class map , which gives an analogue of a result of Colliot-Thélène and Voisin [5] 3.11 over ℂ for varieties over a finite field.

Let A be a ring with anti-involution and F a nice functor (tensor or symmetric power, for example) from finitely-generated projective A-modules to abelian groups. We show that the homology of the hyperbolic unitary groups Un,n(A) with coefficients in F(A2n) can be expressed stably (i.e. after taking the colimit over n) by the homology of these groups with untwisted coefficients and functor homology groups that we can compute in suitable cases (for example, when A is a field of characteristic 0 or a ring without ℤ-torsion and F a tensor power). This extends the result where A is a finite field, which was dealt with previously by C. Vespa and the author (Ann. Sci. ENS, 2010).

The proof begins by relating, without any assumption on F, our homology groups to the homology of a category of hermitian spaces with coefficients twisted by F. Then, when F is polynomial, we establish — following a method due to Scorichenko — an isomorphism between this homology and the homology of another category of (possibly degenerate) hermitian spaces, which is computable (in good cases) by standard methods of homological algebra in functor categories (using adjunctions, Künneth formula…). We give some examples.

Finally, we deal with the analogous problem for non-hyperbolic unitary groups in some special cases, for example euclidean orthogonal groups On (A) (the ring A being here commutative). The isomorphism between functor homology and group homology with twisted coefficients does not hold in full generality; nevertheless we succeed to get it when A is a field or, for example, a subring of ℚ containing ℤ[1/2]. The method, which is similar to that in the previous case, uses a general result of symmetrisation in functor homology proved at the beginning of the article.

We prove that the embedding of the derived category of 1-motives up to isogeny into the triangulated category of effective Voevodsky motives, as well as its left adjoint functor LAlbℚ, commute with the Hodge realization. This result yields a new proof of the rational form of Deligne's conjecture on 1-motives.

The main result of this paper is a computation of the motivic cohomology of varieties of n × m-matrices of of rank m, including both the ring structure and the action of the reduced power operations. The argument proceeds by a comparison of the general linear group-scheme with a Tate suspension of a space which is -equivalent to projective n — 1-space with a disjoint basepoint.

Explicit generators are found for the group G2 of automorphisms of the algebra of one-sided inverses of a polynomial algebra in two variables over a field. Moreover, it is proved that

where S2 is the symmetric group, is the 2-dimensional algebraic torus, E∞() is the subgroup of GL∞() generated by the elementary matrices. In the proof, we use and prove several results on the index of an operator. The final argument is the proof of the fact that K1() ≃ K*. The algebras and are noncommutative, non-Noetherian, and not domains.

In this paper we extend the computation of the the typical curves of algebraic K-theory done by Lars Hesselholt and Ib Madsen to general tensor algebras. The models used allow us to determine the stages of the Taylor tower of algebraic K-theory as a functor of augmented algebras, as defined by Tom Goodwillie, when evaluated on derived tensor algebras.

For R a discrete ring, and M a simplicial R-bimodule, we let R(M) denote the (derived) tensor algebra of M over R, and πR denote the ring of formal (derived) power series in M over R. We define a natural transformation of functors of simplicial R-bimodules Φ: which is closely related to Waldhausen's equivalence We show that Φ induces an equivalence on any finite stage of Goodwillie's Taylor towers of the functors at any simplicial bimodule. This is used to show that there is an equivalence of functors , and for connected bimodules, also an equivalence

Lurie's representability theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to be an almost finitely presented derived geometric stack. We establish several variants of Lurie's theorem, making the hypotheses easier to verify for many applications. Provided a derived analogue of Schlessinger's condition holds, the theorem reduces to verifying conditions on the underived part and on cohomology groups. Another simplification is that functors need only be defined on nilpotent extensions of discrete rings. Finally, there is a pre-representability theorem, which can be applied to associate explicit geometric stacks to dg-manifolds and related objects.

We prove that uniform Roe C*-algebras C*uX associated to some expander graphs X coming from discrete groups with property (τ) are not K-exact. In particular, we show that this is the case for the expander obtained as Cayley graphs of a sequence of alternating groups (with appropriately chosen generating sets).
