Changes along the margin of the southern half of the 5900 km2 Barnes Ice Cap have been assessed using 1993 Landsat TM imagery in comparison with digitized 1:50 000 NTS maps based on 1961 photogrammetry. The average recession over the 183 km long southern perimeter was found to be at least 4 m a−1, with no significant difference between the southeast and southwest sectors. Viewed in conjunction with the sustained retreat previously reported for the northwest margin, these results indicate that a general reduction in the size of Barnes Ice Cap is occurring. The present retreat phase began under a regional climate warming in the late 19th to early 20th century period and continues, while the record of the ablation-season temperature since the mid-century has not shown any significant trend.

Differential spaceborne radar interferometry observations of West Bagley Icefield are used to measure surface velocity and topography. Bagley Icefield is the accumulation area fur Bering Glacier which surged in two phases from spring 1993 through summer 1905. The observations presented are based on data collected during the winter of 1992, prior to the surge, and during winter 1994 while the surge was in full progress. Both observation intervals correspond to 3 day repeat orbit phases of the ERS-I C-band SAR. This paper gives an overview of the algorithms used to derive surface-velocity vector fields and topography for valley glaciers from SAR images. The resulting high-resolution velocity data clearly show West Bagley Icefield accelerating from its quiescent pre-surge velocity by a factor of 2.7 in response to the Bering Glacier surge. Persistence of lnterfero-metric phase coherence and the relatively moderate degree of acceleration on the western arm of Bagley Icefield suggest that the velocity increase may have been caused by increased longitudinal stress gradients resulting from coupling to the surging main trunk of Bering Glacier.

Mass loss from ice shelves is a strong control on grounding-line dynamics. Here we investigate how calving and submarine melt parameterizations affect steady-state grounding-line positions and their stability. Our results indicate that different calving laws with the same melt parameterization result in more diverse steady-state ice-sheet configurations than different melt parameterizations with the same calving law. We show that the backstress at the grounding line depends on the integrated ice-shelf mass flux. Consequently, ice shelves are most sensitive to high melt rates in the vicinity of their grounding lines. For the same shelf-averaged melt rates, different melt parameterizations can lead to very different ice-shelf configurations and grounding-line positions. If the melt rate depends on the slope of the ice-shelf draft, then the positive feedback between increased melting and steepening of the slope can lead to singular melt rates at the ice-shelf front, producing an apparent lower limit of the shelf front thickness as the ice thickness vanishes over a small boundary layer. Our results illustrate that the evolution of marine ice sheets is highly dependent on ice-shelf mass loss mechanisms, and that existing parameterizations can lead to a wide range of modelled grounding-line behaviours.

In order to study, in situ, the rheology of a deforming subglacial till, various instruments were emplaced in till beneath Storglaciären, Sweden. Boreholes were used to gain access to the till beneath about 100 m of ice. Tiltmeters provided an estimate of the shear strain rate in the till. Two other instruments yielded measures of till strength. In addition, water pressures were recorded in boreholes and in the till, a computer-controlled distance meter provided an effectively continuous record of the surface velocity and data from frequent surveys of a stake network were used to estimate the mean basal drag, based on a force-balance calculation.

Tilt rates varied directly with effective pressure, so decreases in water pressure apparently increased the coupling between the glacier and the bed. Surface speed was either out of phase with tilt or varied independently of tilt. Thus, increases in speed were apparently a consequence either of longitudinal coupling or of reduced coupling between the glacier and the bed; they were not a result of till deformation! Till strength varied directly with effective pressure, which is consistent with it being a Mohr – Coulomb, or frictional material. The devices measuring till strength are presumed to have been pulled through the till at a speed that varied in phase with the surface speed but till strength did not vary systematically with surface speed. This implies that the residual strength of the till is insensitive to strain rate. Thus, the appropriate constitutive equation for till rheology may be of the form:

where k is a constant. This is consistent with experimental data reported in the geotechnical literature.

In this paper we reconstruct the space–time trajectory beneath the surface of Aletschgletscher, Switzerland, of the corpses of three mountaineers that disappeared in March 1926 and reappeared at the glacier surface in June 2012. Our method integrates the time-dependent velocity field of an existing full-Stokes glacier model, starting at the point where the corpses were found at the glacier surface. Our main result is that we were able to localize the immersion location where the brothers presumably died. As a second result, the upstream end point of the computed trajectory emerges very close to the glacier surface in 1926, giving a new and global validation of the glacier model in space and time. Testing the sensitivity of the immersion location obtained with respect to the model and other uncertainties indicates an area of 0.6% of the entire glacier area where the accident could have occurred. Our result suggests that death was not caused by an avalanche or a fall into a crevasse; instead, it is likely that the mountaineers became disoriented in prolonged severe weather conditions and froze to death.

A comparison of bedrock fractures with orientation of structures and fabric in the overlying late Pleistocene basal till indicates a sequence of common glacial origin. The deformations in bedrock and till, and the deposition of the till layer, were accomplished by two glacial flows that were part of a mountain ice sheet: the regional (moving south-south-east) and the local (moving south-south-west) along Peavine Valley.

The following sequence of events is postulated from this investigation: the initial glacial advance from the north-north-west that produced conjugate low-angle shear fractures in the bedrock was followed by competition of both the regional and the Peavine Valley glacial flows which also produced low-angle fracture systems. As the over-riding ice became thicker, high-angle conjugate fractures were formed by both glacial flows. Subsequently, south-east-dipping injection wedges were formed by the regional ice, which was concurrently eroding the down-glacier parts of the wedged blocks, depositing local till, and producing sigmoidal deformations in this till. The main deposition of the overlying lodgement till was accomplished by an interaction of both the regional and the Peavine Valley glacial flows, and the lodgement was supplemented by shearing of the till, producing fissility. Bedrock wedging, as a significant process of glacial erosion, is believed to be discussed here for the first time.

Bualtar Glacier, Karakoram Range, northern Pakistan, surged during the spring and early summer of 1987. This followed a major episode of three landslides which impacted part of the glacier ablation zone on 30–31 July 1986. In May 1987, surface velocities of 7 m d−1 were measured at one profile down-glacier from the landslide deposits, where in 1986 velocities were an order of magnitude less. Surface and hydrological characteristics of the glacier in and down-glacier from the landslide deposit were also indicative of surge-like behavior in 1987, and a return to pre-surge conditions by 1988.

A laboratory device was built to measure the forces that ice exerts on a 0.05 m diameter rigid plastic sphere in two different configurations: in contact with a flat bed or isolated from the bed. Measurements indicated that bed-normal contact forces were 1.8 times larger than drag forces due to creeping flow past a slippery sphere isolated from the bed. Measurements of forces as a function of the bed-normal ice velocity, estimations of the ice viscosity parameter and observations of markers in the ice indicate ice is Newtonian with a viscosity of ~1.3x 1011 Pas. Newtonian behavior is expected due to small and transient stresses. A model of regelation indicates that it had a negligible (<5%) influence on forces. Water pressure in the cavity beneath the sphere in contact with the bed had a likewise negligible influence on contact forces. When no cavity is present, drag forces can be correctly estimated using Stokes’s law (Newtonian viscosity) for a slippery sphere. The same law with a bed-enhancement factor of 1.8 is appropriate for estimating bed-normal contact forces. These results reinforce previous laboratory measurements and theories but provide no support for explanations of high debris/bed friction or rates of abrasion that depend on high contact forces.

A meteorological experiment was carried out during the summer months of 1990 and 1991 near the mean equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) on the western slope of the Greenland ice sheet (ΕΤΗ Camp; 69° 34’ N, 49° 17’ W; 1155 m a.s.l.). As a part of the project, the energy fluxes at the surface, including all components of the radiation balance, atmospheric profiles with a tower and radiosondes, and the cloud conditions were investigated in detail. Results from the radiative fluxes are compared with observations made at other locations in order to derive general characteristics of the radiation conditions on the Greenland ice sheet and their relation to the climate cf the ice sheet.

At ΕΤΗ Camp, albedo values obtained at ground level (2 m) and from a high tower (27 m) are similar during the melt season (late May to mid-August) and slightly different during pre- and post-melt seasons due to the interplay of inhomogeneous surface conditions and solar elevation. During the melt period, the decrease in global radiation due to increasing cloud amount is compensated for by an increase, m longwave incomine, radiation. Because of the steady values of longwave outgoing radiation, net radiation at the surface is characterized mainly by the albedo and its variation. The regional net radiation for summer months on the Greenland ice sheet is determined mainly by three facts: (1) a strong increase in alhedo from the ablation area to the ELA and a smaller increase Gom the ELA to the accumulation area: (2) a large increase in longwave outgoing radiation in the ablation area and at the ELA in June and July compared to the accumulation area: (3) a larger amount of cloud of the stratus type at lower areas.

The brittle failure of saline columnar ice was investigated under biaxial compression at and −10° and −40°C over the range 0 ≤ RA < 1 where RA is the ratio of the intermediate to major principal compressive stress. The major principal stress and the intermediate (confining) stress were orthogonal to the columnar axes (type-A confinement); both stresses and the c-axes of the grains were co-planar. The results confirm earlier work by Hausier (1981) and Timco and Frederking (1983, 1986) on saline ice and follow similar behavior to fresh-water columnar ice found by Smith and Schulson (1993) and Frederking (1977). Failure stress and failure mode are sensitive to the confinement and two regimes of behavior are found: the failure stress first rapidly increases with RA in the range 0 ≤ RA < RT and then tends to decrease for RA > Rt. The transition stress ratio, Rt changes from ≈0.2 at −10°C to ≈0.1 at −40°C. The failure mode changes from axial splitting to shear faulting in the loading plane for 0 < RA < Rt. Above Rt failure changes to a combined mode of splitting across the columns and shear faulting out of the loading plane. The failure-stress envelope is of a truncated Coulomb-type. Damage studies show wing cracks and local fragmentation of grains involving the brine pockets. The results are explained in terms of Coulombic sliding and Hertzian crack mechanics.

Dome A is the highest ice feature in Antarctica, at over 4000 m a.s.l., and overlies the Gamburtsev mountains. It is believed that deep ice-core drilling in this area may reveal the oldest ice in Antarctica, providing an unparalleled paleoclimate record in excess of 1 Ma, and perhaps going back as far as 1.2 Ma (Xiao and others, 2008). However, little is known about this area because its height and distance from the coast and scientific stations makes access difficult.

We assess the accuracy and precision of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Support Office for Aerogeophysical Research (SOAR) laser profiling system for mapping topography and detecting surface elevation changes of West Antarctic ice streams. The procedures used to process, calibrate and validate the laser, navigation and global positioning system (GPS) data are presented. The primary objective is to produce surface elevations with the best possible resolution. Repeat surveys of a grid of lines over Whillans Ice Stream and Ice Streams C and E were conducted in the 1997/98 and 1999/2000 seasons. The procedure has been calibrated using special test flights conducted over areas that have been surveyed with precise geodetic GPS equipment mounted on snow-mobiles. After calibration, agreement between the two surfaces is ±10 cm rms. The accuracy and precision of the procedure have been evaluated at points where laser flight-lines cross over one another. The accuracy of the system is found to range from 0.09 to 0.22 m.

We have developed a miniature high-power impulse transmitter for radio-echo sounding of glaciers. It features two synchronous second break-down pulse generators operating in a differential configuration. Specifications include bipolar 550 V pulses having rise times less than 2 ns, 512 Hz repetition rate, 180 mA at 10-14 V d.c. operating power, 5 mA standby current and maximum dimension of 12 cm. Because of its small size and low power consumption, the transmitter is suitable for back-portable systems and for towed arrays. The transmitter first saw service in 1990 on Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory. Subsequent copies have been used on Agassiz Ice Cap, Northwest Territories, Bering Glacier, Alaska and elsewhere. To date, the maximum ice thickness measured using this transmitter is 825 m, on temperate Bering Glacier.

Increasing ship traffic and human activity in the Arctic has led to a growing demand for accurate Arctic weather forecast. High-quality forecasts obtained by models are dependent on accurate initial states achieved by assimilation of observations. In this study, a multi-variate nudging (MVN) method for assimilation of sea-ice variables is introduced. The MVN assimilation method includes procedures for multivariate update of sea-ice volume and concentration, and for extrapolation of observational information spatially. The MVN assimilation scheme is compared with the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) using the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model. Two multi-variate experiments are conducted: in the first experiment, sea-ice thickness from the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission is assimilated, and in the second experiment, sea-ice concentration from the ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility is assimilated. The multivariate effects are cross-validated by comparing the model with non-assimilated observations. It is found that the simple and computationally cheap MVN method shows comparable skills to the more complicated and expensive EnKF method for multivariate update. In addition, we show that when few observations are available, the MVN method is a significant model improvement compared to the version based on one-dimensional sea-ice concentration assimilation.

A degree-day model developed for parameterizing melt rates on the Greenland ice sheet is adapted to the climatic conditions on glaciers in southern Norway. The model is calibrated by means of observed average mass-balance-elevation relationships (1963–90) for three glaciers in a west-east transect in southern Norway and 30 year normals (1961–90) of temperature and precipitation observed at nearby climate stations. The calibration gives a surprisingly small variation of the model parameters (degree-day factors for snow-and ice-melt, and precipitation-elevation gradient) from one glacier to another. The derived values of the parameters are used to estimate the change of the mass-balance-elevation relationship for different climatic scenarios. The study indicates that a low-lying glacier in the maritime, high-precipitation environment near the Atlantic coast is more sensitive to both temperature and precipitation changes than the high elevated glaciers in the dry, more continental climate farther away from the coast. However, all of the glaciers studied will lose mass in a warmer climate, unless the warming is accompanied by a dramatic increase in the precipitation of 25–40% deg−1 warming.

The old problem of erosion by temperate glaciers is reviewed. We restrict ourselves to a monolithologic erosion of hard beds where chemical weathering is almost negligible. Rock fracture, either subglacial or otherwise, may have occurred during a previous cold episode, allowing long-lasting quarrying by the temperate glacier, but, once all the loosened material had been dragged away, grooving becomes the main erosional process. The theory of locally stress-controlled temperatures leads to the idea that very small particles found in the bottom ice cannot reach the bed. Therefore, abrasion and polishing come from rock chips due to grooving or sand grains freed by suglacial chemical weathering. In the steady regime, clasts that are able to groove come from the surrounding rock walls. Most of them do not enter the bergschrund, but are embedded in a bottom layer, which melts progressively over several kilometres. After being in contact with the bed over some distance, they are sufficiently blunted to become unable to groove. This distance. λ, increases with the boulder size, and the largest ones are not yet worn out at the glacier terminus. The mechanics of grooving is roughly modelled to estimate, for any stone size, the grooved volume per unit time and the grooving distance λ. From these estimations, and the size distribution, the erosion rate without quarrying as a function of the distance from the head wall, is calculated. It goes through a maximum when all the debris-laden bottom layer has just melted, and thus an overdeepening might form in a steady way. However, two unknown parameters enter the theory the probability ∏ for a stone able to groove which is in contact with the bed to groove and the ratio k of the volume of grooved rock before the stone is worn out to the volume of the stone. Experiments that may allow us to determine them are indicated below.

High-resolution airborne lidar data are used to produce digital elevation models (DEMs) of an arctic valley glacier (midre Lovénbreen, Svalbard) at resolutions of 2.5–2000 m, using three different interpolation schemes. These data are used in a distributed model of solar radiation loading for glaciers. When the mean of all lidar measurements within a DEM cell is used to calculate cell height, the differences between the finest- (2.5 m) and coarsest-resolution (2000 m) DEMs for the calculated annual whole-glacier spatial means of total potential direct-beam solar radiation, potential duration of direct-beam solar radiation, and intensity of potential direct-beam solar radiation are 20%, 56% and −23% of the 2.5 m DEM values respectively. A resolution change from 2.5 m to 200 m affects the whole-glacier spatial mean summer net solar radiative flux by an average of 5%, and the summer melt production from the glacier by an average of 3% compared with the 2.5 m DEM values, for the years 2001–03. These changes are largely driven by underestimation of shading by surrounding topography at coarser DEM resolutions. This dependency is reduced in the second and third interpolation schemes, especially at resolutions finer than 50 m, which use the maximum lidar height measurement in some or all DEM cells. These results suggest that resolutions of ∼50 m are the coarsest that should be adopted in high-resolution glacier surface energy-balance models for glaciers of similar size and in similar topographic situations to midre Lovénbreen, and that the impact of DEM resolution on calculated solar radiation receipts can be reduced by an appropriate choice of DEM interpolation scheme.

Glaciers in the eastern Pamir have reportedly been gaining mass during recent decades, even though glaciers in most other regions in High Mountain Asia have been in recession. Questions still remain about whether the trend is strengthening or weakening, and how far the positive balances extend into the eastern Pamir. To address these gaps, we use three different digital elevation models to reconstruct glacier surface elevation changes over two periods (2000–09 and 2000–15/16). We characterize the eastern Pamir as a zone of transition from positive to negative mass balance with the boundary lying at the northern end of Kongur Tagh, and find that glaciers situated at higher elevations are those with the most positive balances. Most (67% of 55) glaciers displayed a net mass gain since the 21st century. This led to an increasing regional geodetic glacier mass balance from −0.06 ± 0.16 m w.e. a−1 in 2000–09 to 0.06 ± 0.04 m w.e. a−1 in 2000–15/16. Surge-type glaciers, which are prevalent in the eastern Pamir, showed fluctuations in mass balance on an individual scale during and after surges, but no statistical difference compared to non-surge-type glaciers when aggregated across the region.

The suggestion that patches of basal ice may freeze to the bed of a glacier due to certain regelation effects has been tested in the laboratory by applying high hydrostatic pressures to ice samples at the pressure-melting point. During compression, ice temperatures follow the pressure-melting point closely, but after rapid decompression the ice temperature at first returns only half to three-quarters of the way to the pressure-melting point, after which it appears to warm by thermal conduction from outside the ice sample. If the moving ice at the base of a glacier behaves in the same way as it is exposed to changing pressure fields, frozen patches at bedrock are to be expected.

Records of strain variations in a tunnel beneath Glacier d’Argentière show two types of strain events. The first is a rapid jump or offset in the recorded strain, while the second are strain excursions, initiated by a change in strain over a period up to ten seconds, followed by a gradual recovery to the original strain over some minutes. It is suggested that the offset events are due to nearby stress release due to fracturing of frozen patches of ice at the bedrock while the strain-excursion events show the more distant adjustment of the glacial bed to the former events due to the time lags associated with changes of water-film thickness and regelation heat flow.

Glaciological results of the continuing investigations of the Quelccaya ice cap located at lat. 13° 56’ S., long. 70° 50’ W., in the Cordillera Oriental of southern Peru are presented. Ice cores to a depth of 15 m have been retrieved from the summit dome (5650 m), middle dome (5543 m), and south dome (5480 m) and sampled in detail for microparticle, oxygen-isotope, and total-β-activity measurements. Results of these core analyses indicate that although the summit of this ice cap is only 300 m above the annual snow line and the firn is temperate, an interpretable stratigraphic record is preserved. The marked seasonal ice stratigraphy is produced by the marked seasonal variation in regional precipitation. High concentrations of microparticles and β- radioactive material occur during the dry season (May-August). Microparticles deposited during the rainy season are larger than those deposited during the dry season. On the Quelccaya ice cap the most negative δ18O values occur during the warmer rainy season (the opposite occurs in polar regions). The near-surface mean δ value of – 21‰ is remarkably low for this tropical site where the measured mean annual air temperature is – 3°C The seasonality of the microparticles, total β activity, and isotope ratios offers the prospect of a climatic ice-core record from this tropical ice cap.
