The growth of bonds between snow grains or ice spheres has been variously attributed to surface diffusion, volume diffusion, and evaporation–condensation. To distinguish among these possible mechanisms the unconfined compressive strength of two groups of snow samples was determined as a function of time. One group was allowed to sinter under atmospheric conditions while the other group was kept immersed in silicone oil. The much lower rate of strengthening of the latter group suggests that evaporation–condensation must be the major mechanism of mass transport in snow under atmospheric conditions. The possible magnitudes of the various mass transfer coefficients are discussed.

Measurements of N2/O2 ratios inside individual air bubbles at various depths in the EDML (Antarctic) ice core are presented here. The small bubbles (diameter less than ~200 µm) in deeper ice are significantly enriched in O2 compared to the larger bubbles. The N2/O2 ratios show a systematic dependence on bubble size which is not the case for bubbles in shallower ice. This is interpreted as an effect of pressure relaxation during storage of the cores.

One challenge in improving our understanding of ice-stream dynamics is to develop models of the spatial and temporal transition from ice-sheet to ice-stream flow. We address this with a new, vertically integrated, higher-order formulation for ice-sheet dynamics that captures the leading-order physics of low aspect ratio, viscous fluid flow, regardless of the amount of slip at the bed. The theory introduces a parameter, λ, which approximates the ratio of the basal stress to the shear stress scale, providing a measure of the relative importance of sliding and internal deformation. Our model is able to simultaneously describe the dynamics of both a slow-moving sheet and rapidly flowing ice streams. To test the formulation, we apply a triple-valued sliding law as the basal boundary condition and obtain numerical solutions that can be compared with previous work. We investigate the sensitivity of flow regimes and shear margin width to parameter variation, deriving a scaling for the latter. We also consider a double-valued sliding law, which enforces a constant, low basal stress beneath the ice stream. Comparisons of the resultant stress fields illustrate the different stress balances that can maintain ice-stream flow.

210Pb is an environmental radionuclide with a half-life of 22.3 years, formed in the atmosphere via radioactive decay of radon (222Rn). 222Rn itself is a noble gas with a half-life of 3.8 days and is formed via radioactive decay of uranium (238U) contained in the Earth crust from where it constantly emanates into the atmosphere. 210Pb atoms attach to aerosol particles, which are then deposited on glaciers via scavenging with fresh snow. Due to its half-life, ice cores can be dated with this radionuclide over roughly one century, depending on the initial 210Pb activity concentration. Optimum 210Pb dating is achieved for cold glaciers with no – or little – influence by percolating meltwater. This paper presents an overview which not only includes dating of cold glaciers but also some special cases of 210Pb applications in glaciology addressing temperate glaciers, glaciers with negative mass balance, sublimation processes on glaciers in arid regions, determination of annual net snow accumulation as well as glacier flow rates.

Cylindrical samples containing 0.59 mm to 0.84 mm diameter silica sand at about 97% and 55% ice saturation (the ratio of ice volume to sand pore volume) were tested at a temperature of −12° C in triaxial compression. Both constant axial strain-rate tests and step-stress creep tests provide information on the influence of confining pressure on the shear strength and creep behavior of the sand–ice material. Changes in the degree of ice saturation help show the influence of the ice matrix versus the sand material on the mechanical behavior. Data are discussed in terms of the Mohr–Coulomb failure law and creep theories. It is shown that the cohesive component of strength depends on response of the ice matrix, whereas the frictional component of strength responds in a manner very similar to unfrozen sand tested at high confining pressures. Experimental data show that creep rates decrease exponentially and creep strength increases with an increase in confining pressure.

The electrical resistivity of firn and ice of ice sheets is a function of the “base” resistivity, the contact resistance between the grains, and the temperature. At greater depths temperature is the predominant influence, and observed resistivity curves can be explained by temperature variations which agree partly with the theories of heat conduction in ice sheets.

Glacial erosion wears the bedrock grain by grain, that is it breaks free a multitude of little fragments. It also acts upon the bedrock to cause trains of concentric fractures and quarried surfaces. Since this type of erosion is selective in places of variable resistance, it brings about dug-out forms like grooved joints, or salient forms like veins carved out from up-stream down, it produces small-scale features like grooves or chattermark trains or, on a larger scale, acts upon rocky knobs to produce roches moutonnées; the latter, in spite of their dimensions, are subject to an action that can still affect every point simultaneously. Our objective is thus to present hierarchically the glacial forms left on the bedrock, along with the terminology that designates them. In Table I we give both English and French terminology, but it is not our purpose to make definite proposals for the few new terms in English.

Under turbulent conditions ice growth in sea water often occurs as tiny suspended frazil ice crystals. When the turbulence is insufficient to keep the crystals in suspension, they may accumulate in a surface grease layer of pure ice and sea water. Here we give an account of this grease of low solid fraction and high salinity prior to its freeze-up into a solid ice cover. We provide equations for determining the bulk salinity, Sg, and solid ice volume fraction, ϕs, of the grease layer by indirect and direct methods, review previous observations, and present new data. For the evolution of the solid fraction of accumulating grease ice we find (I) an early mode 0.08 < ϕs < 0.12 and (II) a long-term packing limit of 0.28 < ϕs < 0.31, which for sea water of salinity 34 corresponds to 29.5 < Sg <31.5 and 24 < Sg < 26, respectively. We associate (I) with a mechanical limit related to initial random packing of frazil crystals and (II) with a thermodynamic limit, beyond which the grease will freeze-up into a solid ice cover. By comparing the results with a simple model of random close packing of anisotropic particles, we find that the results are consistent with frazil flocs having an aspect ratio of ˜10, much smaller than values assumed in most model applications that include sea-water frazil ice processes.

We have used tide-gauge data from near Helheim Glacier, East Greenland, and GPS data acquired on the glacier to investigate the spectra of tidal forcing and flow response. For both the tide-gauge and GPS time series, we calculated amplitudes and phases for a harmonic expansion using a limited set of harmonic constituents. We find that the semidiurnal constituents of the glacier flow are well modeled using a single admittance and lag with respect to the tide-gauge data. However, diurnal variations in the glacier flow cannot be simply described using this model. We find an additional signal in glacier position, in phase with the S1 solar tide, with some modulations at other frequencies. These non-tidal variations account for a peak-to-peak variation in glacier flow speed at a site close to the terminus of ~0.7 m d-1, compared with a mean flow rate at this location of ~22 m d-1. The speed variations reach their daily maximum value ~6 hours after local noon. We hypothesize that these additional diurnal variations are associated with peaks in lubrication of the glacier bed due to surface melting driven by diurnal solar heating.

A new type of ice core drill bit, designed with a vane swirler, was developed for ice core drilling with air reverse circulation. An orthogonal experimental design method was employed to investigate the effects of the swirler structure parameters on the reverse circulation performance of the drill bit including helical angle, number of blades, blade length and blade central angle, etc. The entrainment ratio was used to evaluate the reverse circulation effectiveness of the drill bit. The results show that the helical angle is the dominant factor regardless of whether or not the flushing nozzles are part of the design of the drill bit. The number of blades is the least important factor for the drill bit designed with the flushing nozzles (referred to as drill bit I), while the outlet area of the swirling slot is the least influential factor for the drill bit without flushing nozzles (referred to as drill bit П). In addition, the appearance of the ice core has a certain effect on the air reverse circulation for both drill bits. Within the ranges of this study, the optimal structure of the drill bit was determined based on the range analysis of the orthogonal design.

Starting from Glen’s flow law for ice and from a series of assumptions based in part on observations in Greenland and in the Jungfraujoch, the velocity distribution (horizontal velocity component) and surface configuration is derived for a strip-shaped ice sheet in a stationary state. For the choice n = 3 − 4 of the exponent in the power-law flow relation, there is extensive agreement between the theoretically calculated surface profile and the east-west profile measured through “Station Centrale” by Expéditions Polaires Françaises. The corresponding theoretical solution for a circular ice sheet is also given. As a first application of this theory, an attempt is made to calculate the average rate of accumulation in Antarctica from its surface profile (assumed circular in plan) and from the flow-law parameters derived from the Greenland Ice Sheet. It is also shown that a change in accumulation has only a small influence on the total ice thickness of an ice sheet. A method of calculating approximately the age of ice in an ice sheet, based on the foregoing theory, is illustrated by applying it to the Greenland Ice Sheet. After comparing the present theory with that of Nye, a general expression for the surface profile of an ice sheet with constant accumulation is set up and discussed by means of comparison with two profiles through Antarctica.

To investigate the subsurface hydrological characteristics of an overdeepened cirque glacier, nine boreholes were drilled to the bed of West Washmawapta Glacier, British Columbia, Canada, in summer 2007. All holes were surveyed with a video camera, and four were subsequently instrumented with a combination of pressure transducers, thermistors and conductivity sensors. Diurnal pressure and temperature records indicate the presence of a hydraulically connected subglacial drainage system towards the northern glacier margin. Hydraulic jacking in the overdeepening, controlled by changing water volume in the marginal zone, potentially impacts basal ice flow and erosion. The presence of a sediment layer underlying the glacier also likely impacts hydrology and ice dynamics. Influx of warm groundwater into the basal system raises subglacial water temperatures above the pressure-melting point (pmp) and induces diurnal water temperature fluctuations of as much as 0.8°C; water temperatures above the pmp could affect basal melt rates and the development of subglacial drainage systems. These observations suggest that the characteristics of the subglacial drainage system substantially affect patterns of flow and erosion by this small cirque glacier.

Statistical analysis of 1754 normal and surge-type glaciers of the Yukon Territory, Canada, reveals that the two glacier types have significantly different average geometries. Surge-type glaciers tend to be longer, wider and to have lower overall slope than normal glaciers. Because there are strong intercorrelations involving length, width and slope, it is not immediately clear which relationships are fundamental and which are secondary. Multiple correlation analysis allows these confusions to be resolved and reveals that the correlation between length and surge tendency is the fundamental one. The direct correlation between surge tendency and width and the inverse correlation between surge tendency and slope are entirely a result of the length-width and length-slope correlations. This conclusion may have implications for the glacier-surge mechanism because one prediction of the Kamb theory of surging is that small slopes (as opposed to great lengths) favour surging. Fowler’s theory of surging predicts that glaciers for which the product θw2 (where θ is slope and w is width) is small are more likely to be surge-type than those for which the product is large, but analysis of the correlation between this parameter and surge tendency lends no support to this claim.

Frontal ablation from tidewater glaciers is a major component of the total mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet. It remains unclear, however, how changes in atmospheric and oceanic temperatures translate into changes in frontal ablation, in part due to sparse observations at sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution. We present high-frequency time-lapse imagery (photos every 30 min) of iceberg calving and meltwater plumes at Kangiata Nunaata Sermia (KNS), southwest Greenland, during June–October 2017, alongside satellite-derived ice velocities and modelled subglacial discharge. Early in the melt season, we infer a subglacial hydrological network with multiple outlets that would theoretically distribute discharge and enhance undercutting by submarine melt, an inference supported by our observations of terminus-wide calving during this period. During the melt season, we infer hydraulic evolution to a relatively more channelised subglacial drainage configuration, based on meltwater plume visibility indicating focused emergence of subglacial water; these observations coincide with a reduction in terminus-wide calving and transition to an incised planform terminus geometry. We suggest that temporal variations in subglacial discharge and near-terminus subglacial hydraulic efficiency exert considerable influence on calving and frontal ablation at KNS.

Investigations have been made of the geomorphology, internal structure, and till fabric of small drumlins in a drumlin field exposed in front of the retreating northern part of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland. The drumlins either comprise irregular drumlin complexes or they show clearly the shape of typical drumlins with their highest points at the up-glacier ends of streamlined hills.

The core of each drumlin consists either of undisturbed glacio-fluvial deposits or glacio-dynamically deformed drift. The distribution of the first type often has a characteristic en échelon arrangement, similar to the interstream areas in the upper reaches of outwash fans. The second type forms a pattern with a predominant trend conforming to the glacier margin; this type is superimposed on overridden ice-margin push-moraine ridges. It is shown that the material in the drumlin cores is only slightly eroded by the glacier that formed the drumlins. The core is mantled by subglacial lodgement till about 0.1–1.5 m in thickness.

Seventeen fabric analyses of 25 clasts each were performed on material from within the till mantle. These analyses show a preferred long-axis orientation but indicate a considerable between-site variability ranging up to 45° even between samples taken a few metres apart. The preferred clast orientation for samples taken along the drumlin crests only deviates 0–10° from the regional ice-flow direction indicated by fluted moraines, whereas the deviation for samples from the flanks and the stoss-sides is up to 35°. However, the fabrics show a characteristic pattern relative to the shape of the drumlin; on their tops, the clast fabric parallels the ice-flow direction, whereas it tends to follow the contour direction on the flanks and stoss-sides.

It is concluded that the cores of the drumlins consist of pre-existing deposits, whereas the mantles are composed of subglacial till. Regarding the processes involved, the material contained in the core is mainly eroded by pro-glacial melt-water streams and not by ice. During the subsequent flow of ice across the area, the most prominent terrain elements have acted as subglacial obstacles, leading to localized till deposition and drumlin formation. Thus, the drumlins were formed mainly by subglacial deposition of till but the obstacles acted as an essential factor favouring their initiation.

Compression experiments on laboratory-grown columnar S2 saltwater ice loaded triaxially through proportional loading at T = –20°C at applied strain rates of demonstrate that plastic (P) faulting is a mode of failure in saltwater ice when rapidly loaded under a high degree of confinement. In terms of microstructure, mechanical behavior and strength, saltwater ice that fails via P-faulting is almost indistinguishable from columnar S2 freshwater ice that fails via P-faulting loaded under the same conditions. The results also demonstrate that saltwater ice loaded rapidly may exhibit yet another mode of failure, in addition to P-faulting, through what appears to be a mechanism of pore collapse.

7.8% of 1 105 clasts with a B-axis diameter of >32 mm in lodgement tills from Skálafellsjökull, south-east Iceland, had a stoss-and-lee form. Clasts deeply embedded in the tills were more likely to have such a form than those resting lightly on the surface. Deeply embedded basalt and andesite clasts were also more rounded than lightly embedded clasts of similar lithology, and more striated and more likely to have a stoss-and-lee form than deeply embedded gabbro and granophyre clasts. Lightly embedded basalt and andesite clasts were more striated than lightly embedded gabbro and granophyre clasts. Within each lithological class, larger clasts were more likely to have a stoss-and-lee form. It is suggested that deeply embedded boulders acquire their rounded stoss-and-lee form by abrasion and fracture by over-riding debris-laden ice. This occurs after they have become firmly lodged by ploughing into the subglacial till bed, and before they become buried by lodgement of debris around them. The degree of modification depends in part upon clast size and lithology. The long-axis orientation of deeply embedded boulders is a good indicator of former ice-flow directions.

We investigate the relationship between four ice-shelf characteristics in the area close to the calving front: ice flow speed, strain rate, ice thickness and shelf width. Data are compiled for these glaciological parameters at the calving fronts of 22 Antarctic ice shelves. Clarification concerning the viscous supply of ice to the calving front is sought following the empirical calving law of Alley and others (2008), derived from a similar but smaller dataset, and the scaling analysis of Hindmarsh (2012). The dataset is analysed and good agreement is observed between the expected theoretical scaling and geophysical data for the flow of ice near the calving front in the case of ice shelves that are laterally confined and have uniform rheology. The lateral confinement ensures flow is aligned in the along-shelf direction, and uniform rheological parameters mean resistance to flow is provided by near-stationary ice in the grounded margins. In other cases, the velocity is greater than predicted, which we attribute to marginal weakening or the presence of ice tongues.

Over the last 15 years, satellite-altimeter data have been used to produce surface-elevation maps of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets with a 2 m accuracy. Analysis of Seasat and Geosat cross-over points showed that satellite altimeters can measure changes in the mass balance of the ice sheets. The retracking algorithm used to extract surface elevations from Seasat and Geosat return wave forms is based upon a modified form of the Brown surface-scattering model. Recent work has shown that altimeter wave forms over higher-altitude regions of the ice sheets are affected by sub-surface volume-scattering. Here, we develop a theoretical model for altimeter return wave forms over the ice sheets that is based on a combination of surface-and volume-scattering. By approximating the altimeter’s antenna pattern and transmitted pulse shape with Gaussian functions, we derive a closed-form analytical solution for the return-power volume-scattered from beneath the ice-sheet surface. We then combine the volume-scattering model with the Brown model and apply it to average wave forms from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. The results show that the combined model accurately describes variations in altimeter wave-form shapes that are produced by differing contributions of surface-and volume-scattering to the received power. The combined model is then used to simulate return wave forms from a dual-frequency altimeter. The simulation shows that a two-frequency system can provide quantitative estimates of the absorption and scattering coefficients for near-surface snow.

We have constrained the value for thermal diffusivity of near-surface snow and firn at Summit Station, Greenland, using a Fourier-type analysis applied to hourly temperature measurements collected from eight thermistors in a closed-off, air-filled borehole between May 2004 and July 2008. An implicit, finite-difference method suggests that a bulk diffusivity of ∼25 ± 3m2 a−1 is the most reasonable for representing macroscale heat transport in the top 30 m of firn and snow. This value represents an average diffusivity and, in a conduction-only model, generates temperature series whose phase shifts with depth most closely match those of the Summit borehole data (rms difference between measurements and model output is ∼6 days). This bulk value, derived numerically and corroborated analytically, is useful over large tracts of the Greenland ice sheet where density and microstructure are unknown.
