Repeated measurements of density profiles and surface elevation along a 515 km traverse of the Greenland ice sheet are used to determine elevation change rates and the error in determining mass-balance trends from these rates which arises from short-term fluctuations in mass input, compaction and surface density. Mean values of this error, averaged over 100 km sections of the traverse, decrease with time from the start of observations in 2004, with a half-time of ∼4 years. After 7 years the mean error is less than the ice equivalent mass imbalance.

Electrical resistivity sounding, using electrodes which are lowered directly to the ice–rock interface in bore holes, is proposed as a technique for studying the exact position of glacier beds, as well as their lithological characteristics. A test study is described on Grubengletscher, a partially cold Alpine glacier in Switzerland. Results of soundings along a 400m long profile indicate that previous depth determinations, based on radio echo-soundings, were in general accurate to within less than 5% of the actual ice thickness. The results also show that the glacier rests on non-consolidated sediments of considerable thickness. The proposed method could add substantial information about glacier sliding and glacier erosion, if applied alongside conventional deep drilling projects.

We describe a parallel-probe saturation profiler (PPSP) for accurate and fast profiling of liquid-water saturations in a snowpack. This device utilizes the absorption of electrical energy, by water molecules under the action of an external electric field, due to instantaneous rotations from initially random orientations to the orientation of the applied electric field. Our observations show that the height of first peak signal (HFPS), i.e. the difference between the maxima and minima in the PPSP signal-response time series, is proportional to the liquid-water content and the water saturation of snow. The HFPS corresponding to different liquid-water contents were obtained from various naturally occurring snow types and were observed to be proportional to the water saturation of the snow, irrespective of snow types. For simultaneous measurements at corresponding depths in a snowpack, a position encoder supports the PPSP. This device was calibrated for various types of snow samples and was then tested on the snow covers under different climatic zones of the Himalaya. The operation of the PPSP is easy and fast. The distribution of liquid water within a large snow cover can be estimated speedily using the PPSP, with a vertical resolution of 7 mm.

Laterally confined marine outlet glaciers exhibit a diverse range of behaviours. This study investigates time-evolving and steady configurations of such glaciers. Using simplified analytic models, it determines conditions for steady states, their stability and expressions for the rate of the calving-front migration for three widely used calving rules. It also investigates the effects of ice mélange when it is present. The results show that ice flux at the terminus is an implicit function of ice thickness that depends on the glacier geometric and dynamic parameters. As a consequence, stability of steady-state configurations is determined by a complex combination of these parameters, specifics of the calving rule and the details of mélange stress conditions. The derived expressions of the rate of terminus migration suggest a non-linear feedback between the migration rate and the calving-front position. A close agreement between the obtained analytic expressions and numerical simulations suggests that these expressions can be used to gain insights into the observed behaviour of the glaciers and also to use observations to improve understanding of calving conditions.

A method is described of determining the thickness of a valley glacier from measurements of gravity. On a Norwegian glacier approximately 4 km. long and km. wide values of gravity were measured at points on four transverse lines. For comparison, values were measured at points on three lines in the valley below the snout of the glacier. The positions and altitudes of these gravity stations were determined by triangulation. After making corrections for the altitudes of stations and for the effect of the valley walls, the differences between the gravity values obtained on the glacier and those obtained in the valley below the glacier are attributed to the thickness of the ice. Four transverse sections of the glacier, obtained in this way, are given. Errors in the estimates of ice thickness should not exceed 20 per cent on the two lower cross-sections, nor 40 per cent on the upper two.

Uniaxial compressive creep tests on fine-grained polycrystalline ice indicate that secondary strain-rate is proportional to σ1.8, where σ is applied stress, for the range 0.1 < σ < 0.5 kgf/cm2 (10 < σ < 50 kN/m2). On the basis of the present tests, earlier results suggesting linear viscous behaviour at low stress are believed to be invalid.

Geodetic surveying and ground-based radar profiling were used to determine geometry and surface motion of the ice sheet on the Dyer Plateau, Antarctica, in the vicinity of an ice-core site on a local dome. Vertical strain measurements in the core hole constrain the depth profile of vertical velocity. These geophysical measurements are used to analyze the profiles of density and annual layer thickness measured on the ice core to estimate the current mass balance of the ice column and the past history of accumulation rate. Consideration of horizontal and vertical mass-flow divergence shows that the profiles of density and vertical velocity are not fully consistent with steady state. Mean density of the firn layer appears to be increasing, which leads to the deduction of a small rate of mass increase (≈ 0.02 m a− 1 ice-equivalent thickness). Over the last 200a there has been a gradual increase in accumulation rate from about 0.46 m a− 1 to 0.54 m a− 1 ice-equivalent thickness in recent time.

“Striations” produced by catastrophic subglacial drainage of an ice-dammed lake were investigated in front of Mjelkedalsbreen, Jotunheimen, southern Norway. At each site, length, width, and orientation of at least 50 “striations” were recorded. These data are compared with similar measurements from a glacially abraded “control” site. On the basis of length or width measurements alone, “striations” produced by subglacial drainage are not consistently distinguishable from those produced by glacial abrasion. However, the former display more variable orientations and cross-cutting relationships which could be misinterpreted as indicating changing ice-flow directions. They can be recognized by the occurrence of some “striations” with relatively low length : width ratios, which indicate the transport of boulders by saltation.

The geographical distribution of the drumlins was studied. They are arranged in bands perpendicular to ice pressure with a weaker alignment parallel to ice flow. An hypothesis of drumlin origin is presented. Two ice flows are present, a strong flow from an Irish centre to the north-west, and a weaker flow of Scottish ice from the north.

The late Wisconsin Shelbyville till was deposited in southern Illinois c. 20 000–21 000 year B.P. and records the maximum southern advance of the Lake Michigan lobe of the Laurentide ice sheet. The yield strength calculated for a representative till debris flow found just south of the ice margin is 8 kPa (0.08 bar), and probably approximates yield strength of basal Shelbyville till. An ice-profile model assuming plastic behavior in basal till suggests the southern Lake Michigan lobe may have been unusually thin. Reconstructed Laurentide glacier profiles from the south-west and western Great Plains (South Dakota, Alberta, Minnesota, and Montana), and the MacKenzie Delta, N.W.T., are similar to those inferred for the southern Great Lakes area, and much thinner than those of most modern ice sheets. The Pleistocene Laurentide ice sheet may have been asymmetric: thicker in the east than in the west. Glaciers resting on weak sediments can move both by subglacial sediment deformation (creep) and sliding at the sediment–ice interface. Till rheology is complex; shearing of till by over-riding glaciers would increase porosity and further reduce yield strength.

A new concept of attitude stabilization for thermal probes or coring drills in ice eliminates instability. The center of support is placed above the center of gravity. A lower and an upper hot point produce melt penetration. The ratio of their power levels is the basis for stabilization. This is provided by the automatic control of the heater in the upper hot point.

Velocity and strain-rate patterns in a small temperate valley glacier display flow effects of channel geometry, ice thickness, surface slope, and ablation. Surface velocities of 20–55 m/year show year-to-year fluctuations of 1.5–3 m/year. Transverse profiles of velocity have the form of a higher-order parabola modified by the effects of flow around a broad bend in the channel, which makes the velocity profile asymmetric, with maximum velocity displaced toward the outside of the bend. Marginal sliding rates are 5–22 m/year against bedrock and nil against debris. Velocity vectors diverge from the glacier center-line near the terminus, in response to surface ice loss, but converge toward it near the firn line because of channel narrowing. Plunge of the vectors gives an emergence flow component that falls short of balancing ice loss by about 1 m/year. Center-line velocities vary systematically with ice thickness and surface slope. In the upper half of the reach studied, effects of changing thickness and slope tend to compensate, and velocities are nearly constant; in the lower half, the effects are cumulative and velocities decrease progressively down-stream. Where the slope increases down-stream from 7° to 9°, reflecting a bedrock step, there is localized longitudinal extension of 0.03 year–1 followed by compression of 0.08 year–1 where the slope decreases. Marginal shear (up to 0.5 year–1) is strongly asymmetric due to flow around the bend: the stress center-line, where one of the principal axes becomes longitudinal, is displaced 150 m toward the inside of the bend. This effect is prominently visible in the crevasse pattern. Ice fluxes calculated independently by “laminar” flow theory and by continuity disagree in a way which shows that internal deformation of the ice is controlled not by local surface slope but by an effective slope that is nearly constant over the reach studied.

The critique by Issler and other (2017) of our avalanche dynamics model maintains that we disregard well-established results of particulate gravity flows. Here we show that the arguments of Issler and others (1) violate Newton's laws of motion in the avalanche core and (2) ignore size-dependent drag forces on snow particles (Stokes law) that lead to the formation of avalanche suspension layers. We explain why we cannot amend our model equations to accommodate their suggestions. The goal of our approach is to describe highly non-stationary processes in the avalanche core that lead to a wide range of avalanche flow types and therefore different flow behavior. This is important for practical applications.

The freezing of sea water to the base of an ice shelf can give rise to large patches of accumulated ice, a phenomenon known as marine ice. In this study a numerical method is presented for calculating the thickness of the marine-ice layer using an ice- shelf-ocean model. The present-day modeling paradigm of ice-shelf–ocean interaction usually involves the fixed specification of the ice-shelf geometry while the ocean circulation in the cavity beneath the ice shelf evolves freely. This approach relies on several assumptions, such as steady-state ice-shelf thickness and ice-shelf flow fields, in order to make reasonable quantitative estimates of the thermodynamic exchange processes occurring at the ice-shelf base. This paper discusses the impact of these and other assumptions on the estimation of the thickness of the marine-ice layer. Model simulation results are presented for an idealized ice-shelf–ocean configuration as a demonstration of the feasibility of the numerical method. A sensitivity analysis is given so as to quantify the relative uncertainty in the marine-ice thickness that arises from uncertainties in the model input parameters, these being principally the ice-shelf flow field, the basal accumulation rate and the ice-shelf thickness field.

Hummocks and hollows were found developed in bedrock in the South Shetland Islands Antarctica. Excavation revealed an ice lens 60 cm thick beneath a hummock. A cycle for the formation of the hummocks and hollows by the growth and collapse of ice lenses is suggested.

Data on the physical properties of seasonal alpine snow have been collected from the Beartooth Mountains near Cooke City, Montana (elevation ≈3000 m) and the Bridger Range near Bozeman, Montana (elevation ≈2200 m). Systematic measurements of snow density, temperature, structure, ram and Canadian hardness, centrifugal tensile strength and shear strength measured with a shear box and several types of shear vanes are included. Test results were grouped according to gross snow types (cohesive fine-grained “winter” snow. depth hoar, new snow, etc.) and whether the snow was wet or dry. Then interrelations between the different test parameters were studied. A plot of ram number versus density for winter snow gave a log-linear relation similar to that suggested for polar snows. Both shear-vane and centrifugal-tensile results when plotted as a function of porosity are well described by the negative exponential relation suggested by Ballard and Feldt. Depth hoar and wet snow invariably have lower strength values at any given density. There is an excellent one-to-one agreement between values obtained with the shear vane and the shear box.

Several field experiments were performed to study the sources of error in making in-situ mechanical tests on snow without utilizing a pit wall. Statistical analysis of the results shows that the main factor contributing to the experimental scatter is lateral inhomogeneity in the snow cover. There was no significant difference between the results of different operators. The standard deviation of a group of strength tests is shown to be directly proportional to the mean value of the group. This indicates that a logarithmic transformation should be made in handling snow strength results in order to stabilize the variance. It is emphasized that the systematic relations between snow properties invariably become obscured when different snow “types” are indiscriminately grouped together.

Firn microstructure is accurately characterized using images obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Visibly etched grain boundaries within images are used to create a skeleton outline of the microstructure. A pixel-counting utility is applied to the outline to determine grain area. Firn grain sizes calculated using the technique described here are compared to those calculated using the techniques of Gow (1969) and Gay and Weiss (1999) on samples of the same material, and are found to be substantially smaller. The differences in grain size between the techniques are attributed to sampling deficiencies (e.g. the inclusion of pore filler in the grain area) in earlier methods. The new technique offers the advantages of greater accuracy and the ability to determine individual components of the microstructure (grain and pore), which have important applications in ice-core analyses. The new method is validated by calculating activation energies of grain boundary diffusion using predicted values based on the ratio of grain-size measurements between the new and existing techniques. The resulting activation energy falls within the range of values previously reported for firn/ice.

Over the period 1972–98 the height of the snow surface at eight Antarctic sites in Palmer Land and on Alexander Island has been measured with respect to fixed points on local nunataks. From these data an empirical relation between height changes over a given period and three key variables has been derived. These variables are (i) the local mean annual surface air temperature, (ii) a regional estimate of energy available for melt over the period (derived from the nearby Rothera air-temperature record) and (iii) a regional estimate of accumulation over the period (derived from the nearby Gomez Nunatak ice-core accumulation record). Using this relation, the contribution of the Antarctic Peninsula to sea-level rise for warming from climatic conditions (averaged over the last 30 years) is estimated to be −0.006 ± 0.002 mm a−1 K−1. If recent warm conditions persist, however, and meltwater can run off to the sea, the contribution to sea-level rise from ablation is calculated to be 0.07 ± 0.02 mm a−1 K−1.

Snow slab avalanches primarily release by propagation of shear fractures within thin weak layers under thicker slabs. The weak layer is typically on the order of 1 mm thick and fails in mode II. In some cases, the weak layer is thicker and there may be a need to consider slope-normal deformation as part of the energy condition prior to rapid propagation. In this paper, field measurements from shear fracture initiation and high-speed films are combined to consider the effects of slope-normal deformation on bending of the slab prior to propagation and its relation to the propagation condition. Slab bending is modelled using two limiting cases: (1) a uniformly loaded beam supported by a deforming weak layer, analogous to a Winkler foundation, and (2) a uniformly loaded unsupported cantilevered beam. The experimental and analytical results suggest that slab bending prior to fracture initiation is small or negligible. Two previous approaches to modelling slab avalanche initiation involving slab bending are discussed. Both models proposed strong slab-bending effects prior to initiation, which conflicts with our results. Our field observations and modelling both show that strong bending is a dynamic effect following slope-parallel weak-layer fracture initiation.
