Measurements of the concentrations of Na+ K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ were made on 28 samples from the 255 m deep ice core from Little America V. All concentrations decrease sharply with depth from the firn–ice transition at 52 m to somewhere between 125 m and 150 m. From 150 m to 250 m the cationic concentrations are relatively constant. This is interpreted to indicate that the ice above 125 m fell as snow on the Ross Ice Shelf and that ice below 150 m originated inland on Marie Byrd Land.

Airborne radio echo-sounding of Spitsbergen glaciers during 1980 used 60 MHz SPR1 Mk IV equipment. On several glaciers results showed unambiguous bottom returns at depths 2–3 times those reported in previous Soviet echo-sounding at 440 and 620 MHz. Comparison of 60 MHZ records and independent gravity-surveyed ice thickness for two glaciers agreed to within 10%, whereas Soviet ice thicknesses were only 30–60% of gravity depths. Soviet bed echoes often coincided closely with an internal reflecting horizon recorded by the SPRI Mk IV system, and it is shown that Soviet U.H.F. equipment failed to penetrate to the true glacier bed on a number of ice masses (e.g. Finsterwalderbreen, Kongsvegen, Negribreen). This was probably due to increased absorption and scattering at higher radio frequencies, related to the inhomogeneous nature of Spitsbergen glaciers, which are often at or near the pressure-melting point. Both 60 MHz and U.H.F. equipment seldom recorded bed echoes in ice-cap accumulation areas (e.g. Isachsenfonna), where firn soaking during summer and 10 m temperatures of zero degrees have been observed. An isolated internal reflecting horizon was recorded on many glaciers. It is unlikely to be a moraine layer, but may be related to ice with a water content of 1–2% observed at a similar depth (115 m) in a drill core from Fridtjovbreen.

If sea-level depression in the Ross Sea embayment were: (1) < 120–130 m, or (2) > 120–130 m but sustained for < 104 a, it is unlikely that the Ross Ice Shelf would have become fully grounded over the whole continental shelf during Wisconsin times. Sediments flooring the Ross Sea and recent estimates of sea-level lowering and post-glacial emergence yield little support for grounded ice but do provide some evidence for expanded ice-shelf conditions. A reconstruction is presented based on this premise. The model is compatible with glacial geologic results, especially those in the McMurdo Sound area.

Ice streams are warmed by shear strain, both vertical shear near the bed and lateral shear at the margins. Warm ice deforms more easily, establishing a positive feedback loop in an ice stream where fast flow leads to warm ice and then to even faster flow. Here, we use radar attenuation measurements to show that the Siple Coast ice streams are colder than previously thought, which we hypothesize is due to along-flow advection of cold ice from upstream. We interpret the attenuation results within the context of previous ice-temperature measurements from nearby sites where hot-water boreholes were drilled. These in-situ temperatures are notably colder than model predictions, both in the ice streams and in an ice-stream shear margin. We then model ice temperature using a 1.5-dimensional numerical model which includes a parameterization for along-flow advection. Compared to analytical solutions, we find depth-averaged temperatures that are colder by 0.7°C in the Bindschadler Ice Stream, 2.7°C in the Kamb Ice Stream and 6.2–8.2°C in the Dragon Shear Margin of Whillans Ice Stream, closer to the borehole measurements at all locations. Modelled cooling corresponds to shear-margin thermal strengthening by 3–3.5 times compared to the warm-ice case, which must be compensated by some other weakening mechanism such as material damage or ice-crystal fabric anisotropy.

A small ice-dammed lake near Søndre Strømfjord, West Greenland, drained suddenly during the night of 15–16 July 1988. This drainage was observed from within the lake basin near the tunnel mouth. The drainage had four main effects: the collapse of adjacent moraine ridges; the shearing of ice around the tunnel mouth; rapid incision of the lake bed; and the transport of sediment from the lake basin into the glacier. All of the above were confined to a period of 15–30 min following the exposure of a circular tunnel c. 6 m in diameter.

Using global Sentinel-1 radar backscatter data, we systematically map the locations of glaciers with surge-type activity during 2017–22. Patterns of pronounced increases or decreases in the strongest backscatter between two winter seasons often indicate large changes in glacier crevassing, which we treat here as a sign of surge-type activity. Validations against velocity time series, terminus advances and crevassing found in optical satellite images confirm the robustness of this approach. We find 115 surge-type events globally between 2017 and 2022, around 100 of which on glaciers already know as surge-type. Our data reveal a pronounced spatial clustering in three regions, (i) Karakoram, Pamirs and Western Kunlun Shan (~50 surges), (ii) Svalbard (~25) and (iii) Yukon/Alaska (~9), with only a few other scattered surges elsewhere. This spatial clustering is significantly more pronounced than the overall global clustering of known surge-type glaciers. The 2017–22 clustering may point to climatic forcing of surge initiation.

A new device for measuring air content in polar ice has been designed, built and tested with 22 samples of Antarctic ice. The new technique is based on the barometric method which implies: (1) air extraction under vacuum by melting refreezing of the ice sample placed in a calibrated cell, and (2) accurate air-pressure and temperature measurements. The new apparatus simplifies the experimental procedure, decreases the duration of measurement and can eventually be used in the field. It provides results with an accuracy equivalent to or better than other methods previously used.

The waste containers should be retrievable for a few centuries until further research has solved all problems and 90Sr and 137Cs have decayed to less than 0.1%. Safe and fairly cheap retrievability can be guaranteed without container mooring. The paper presents an example: The high-level waste of the whole world for the next 30 years could be put in to 3 × 107 spherical containers with 0.2 m radius and disposed of in an area with 15 km radius and a depth range of 20–100 m under the surface of either the Antarctic or the Green land ice sheet. The deposit does not affect the stability of the sheet. Even the most upsetting natural ice-sheet instabilities and/or climatic changes could not cause radioactive contamination.

Direct measurements of spatially distributed vertical strain within ice masses are scientifically valuable but challenging to acquire. We use manual marker tracking and automatic cross correlation between two repeat optical televiewer (OPTV) images of an ~100 m-long borehole at Derwael Ice Rise (DIR), Antarctica, to reconstruct discretised, vertical strain rate and velocity at millimetre resolution. The resulting profiles decay with depth, from −0.07 a−1 at the surface to ~−0.002 a−1 towards the base in strain and from −1.3 m a−1 at the surface to ~−0.5 m a−1 towards the base in velocity. Both profiles also show substantial local variability. Three coffee-can markers installed at different depths into adjacent boreholes record consistent strain rates and velocities, although averaged over longer depth ranges and subject to greater uncertainty. Measured strain-rate profiles generally compare closely with output from a 2-D ice-flow model, while the former additionally reveal substantial high-resolution variability. We conclude that repeat OPTV borehole logging represents an effective means of measuring distributed vertical strain at millimetre scale, revealing high-resolution variability along the uppermost ~100 m of DIR, Antarctica.

A simple qualitative model of global ice cover is presented to account for the apparent catastrophic transitions between glacial and interglacial climates. Unlike the Budyko (1972) and Weertman (1976) models, the catastrophe model employs a second control parameter besides the oribtally induced insolation fluctuations to differentiate between fast and slow glaciological response mechanisms. It is conjectured that this second control parameter is linked to isostatic actions occurring beneath the continental crust which shift the dynamic emphasis from terrestrial to marine ice margins.

Three spontaneous avalanches were observed in Lia, Longyearbyen, Svalbard, each occurring naturally under similar temperature conditions. Automatic measurements of temperature inside the snowpack led to examination of the triggering of avalanches in cold conditions following a rapid drop in temperature. The mechanical properties of ice depend on the slab temperature and I ask: could a rapid temperature change affect the mechanical properties differently considering a slab consisting of (1) rounded grains or (2) faceted grains? Snow is considered as a foam of ice crystals, and triaxial deformation tests are performed at constant strain rate to examine the influence of temperature and grain type on the mechanical properties. Although the snow densities in the two sample sets were almost identical, some differences due to grain type were observed. In particular, the set with faceted grain snow started to flow at higher stresses than the set with rounded grains.

Albedo is a key factor in modulating the absorption of solar radiation on ice surfaces. Satellite measurements have shown a general reduction in albedo across the Greenland ice sheet over the past few decades, particularly along the western margin of the ice sheet, a region known as the Dark Zone (albedo < 0.45). Here we chose a combination of Landsat 4–8 and Sentinel 2 imagery to enable us to derive the longest record of albedo variations in the Dark Zone, running from 1984 to 2020. We developed a simple, pragmatic and efficient sensor transformation to provide a long time series of consistent, harmonized satellite imagery. Narrow to broadband conversion algorithms were developed from regression models of harmonized satellite data and in situ albedo from the Program for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) automatic weather stations. The albedo derived from the harmonized Landsat and Sentinel 2 data shows that the maximum extent of the Dark Zone expanded rapidly between 2005 and 2007, increasing to ~280% of the average annual maximum extent of 2900 km2 to ~8000 km2 since. The Dark Zone is continuing to darken slowly, with the average annual minimum albedo decreasing at a rate of $\sim \!-0.0006 \pm 0.0004 \, {\rm a}^{-1}$ (p = 0.16, 2001–2020).

“Striations” produced by catastrophic subglacial drainage of an ice-dammed lake were investigated in front of Mjelkedalsbreen, Jotunheimen, southern Norway. At each site, length, width, and orientation of at least 50 “striations” were recorded. These data are compared with similar measurements from a glacially abraded “control” site. On the basis of length or width measurements alone, “striations” produced by subglacial drainage are not consistently distinguishable from those produced by glacial abrasion. However, the former display more variable orientations and cross-cutting relationships which could be misinterpreted as indicating changing ice-flow directions. They can be recognized by the occurrence of some “striations” with relatively low length : width ratios, which indicate the transport of boulders by saltation.

The geographical distribution of the drumlins was studied. They are arranged in bands perpendicular to ice pressure with a weaker alignment parallel to ice flow. An hypothesis of drumlin origin is presented. Two ice flows are present, a strong flow from an Irish centre to the north-west, and a weaker flow of Scottish ice from the north.

A 14 year kinematic survey of Spruce Creek rock glacier, Colorado, USA, provides information on rates and controls of surface strain. Steel-tape measurements of differential movement yield data of cm-scale accuracy, sufficient to assess strain patterns over small portions of the very slowly deforming rock glacier. Flow rates are typically <10cma–1, and measured strain rates range from 1.0 × 10–5a–1 to 1.5 × 10–3a–1. The primary control on longitudinal strain is changing surface slope, with extending flow occurring in areas of down-valley increase in slope, and compressing flow in areas of down-valley slope decrease. Relatively high strain rates are associated with higher flow velocities and with the impingement of faster-flowing up-valley portions of the rock glacier on the slower-moving lower portion. Overall strain rates decreased through the study period, probably as a result of a slowing of the upper part of the rock glacier. Transverse ridges are associated with longitudinal shortening, caused by either slope changes or impingement of faster-moving sections of the rock glacier on slower-moving sections, but transverse ridges do not occur in every area of strong longitudinal shortening.

As a result of the coupling effects of longitudinal stress gradients, the perturbations ∆u in glacier-flow velocity that result from longitudinally varying perturbations in ice thickness ∆h and surface slope ∆α are determined by a weighted longitudinal average of ϕh∆h and ϕα∆α, where ϕh and ϕα are “influence coefficients” that control the size of the contributions made by local ∆h and ∆α to the flow increment in the longitudinal average. The values of ϕh and ϕα depend on effects of longitudinal stress and velocity gradients in the unperturbed datum state. If the datum state is an inclined slab in simple-shear flow, the longitudinal averaging solution for the flow perturbation is essentially that obtained previously (Kamb and Echelmeyer, 1985) with equivalent values for the longitudinal coupling length l and with ϕh = n + 1 and ϕα + n, where n is the flow-law exponent. Calculation of the influence coefficients from flow data for Blue Glacier, Washington, indicates that in practice ϕα differs little from n, whereas ϕh can differ considerably from n + 1. The weighting function in the longitudinal averaging integral, which is the Green’s function for the longitudinal coupling equation for flow perturbations, can be approximated by an asymmetric exponential, whose asymmetry depends on two “asymmetry parameters” μ and σ, where μ is the longitudinal gradient of ℓ(= dℓ/dx). The asymmetric exponential has different coupling lengths ℓ+ and ℓ− for the influences from up-stream and from down-stream on a given point of observation. If σ/μ is in the range 1.5–2.2, as expected for flow perturbations in glaciers or ice sheets in which the ice flux is not a strongly varying function of the longitudinal coordinate x, then, when dℓ/dx > 0, the down-stream coupling length ℓ+ is longer than the up-stream coupling length ℓ−, and vice versa when dℓ/dx < 0. Flow-, thickness- and slope-perturbation data for Blue Glacier, obtained by comparing the glacier in 1957–58 and 1977–78, require longitudinal averaging for reasonable interpretation. Analyzed on the basis of the longitudinal coupling theory, with 4ℓ + 1.6 km up-stream, decreasing toward the terminus, the data indicate n to be about 2.5, if interpreted on the basis of a response factor Ѱ + 0.85 derived theoretically by Echelmeyer (unpublished) for the flow response to thickness perturbations in a channel of finite width. The data contain an apparent indication that the flow response to slope perturbations is distinctly smaller, in relation to the response to thickness perturbations, than is expected on a theoretical basis (i.e. ϕα/ ϕh + (n/n + 1) for a slab). This probably indicates that the effective ℓ is longer than can be tested directly with the available data set owing to its limited range in x.

Repeated measurements of density profiles and surface elevation along a 515 km traverse of the Greenland ice sheet are used to determine elevation change rates and the error in determining mass-balance trends from these rates which arises from short-term fluctuations in mass input, compaction and surface density. Mean values of this error, averaged over 100 km sections of the traverse, decrease with time from the start of observations in 2004, with a half-time of ∼4 years. After 7 years the mean error is less than the ice equivalent mass imbalance.

In this work we tested the suitability of thermistor strings as automatic tools for the continuous measurement of glacier ice ablation. Experimental data collected in summer 2017 over an Italian glacier provided ice ablation readings with accuracy similar to manual measurements with ablation stakes and other automatic systems, like the draw-wire method and the Bøggild ablatometer. Thermistor strings have potential for future applications in remote glacier monitoring, thanks to their flexibility, simple construction, and robustness.
