An opportunity to analyse the mechanism for the formation of a basal ice layer was provided by Glacier de Tsanfleuron in the Swiss Alps. This glacier has some lateral subglacial cavities in which a basal ice layer forms on the bedrock floor and is subsequently incorporated at the base of the glacier. Petrographic and crystallographic analyses of the different types of ice have provided a means of investigating the successive stages of the process. These analyses show major structural changes which provide field confirmation of the deformation mechanisms studied by several authors in laboratory experiments.

Alaska's largest city, Anchorage, depends on Eklutna Glacier meltwater for drinking water and hydropower generation; however, the 29 km2 glacier is rapidly retreating. We used a temperature-index model forced with local weather station data to reconstruct the glacier's mass balance for the period 1985–2019 and quantify the impacts of glacier change on discharge. Model calibration involved a novel combination of in situ, geodetic mass-balance measurements and observed snowlines from satellite imagery. A resulting ensemble of 250 best-fitting model parameters was used to model mass balance and discharge. Eklutna Glacier experienced a significant negative trend (−0.31 m w.e. decade−1) in annual mean surface mass balance (mean: −0.62 ± 0.06 m w.e.). The day of the year when 95% of annual melt occurs was five days later in 2011–19 than in 1985–93, demonstrating a prolongation of melt season (May–September). Modeled mean specific discharge increased at 0.14 m decade−1, indicating peak water, the year when annual discharge reaches a maximum due to glacier retreat, has not been reached. Four of the five highest discharge years occurred since 2000. Increases in discharge quantity and melt season length require water resource managers consider future decreased discharge as the glacier continues to shrink.

We performed an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis to assess the intraseasonal variability of 5–60 day band-pass filtered Antarctic sea-ice concentration in austral winter using a 20-year daily dataset from 1995 to 2014. Zonal wave number 3 dominated in the Antarctic, especially so across the west Antarctic. Results showed the coexistence of stationary and propagating wave components. A spectral analysis of the first two principal components (PCs) showed a similar structure for periods up to 15 days but generally more power in PC1 at longer periods. Regression analysis upon atmospheric fields using the first two PCs of sea-ice concentration showed a coherent wave number 3 pattern. The spatial phase delay between the sea-ice and mean sea-level pressure patterns suggests that meridional flow and associated temperature advection are important for modulating the sea-ice field. EOF analyses carried out separately for El Niño, La Niña and neutral years, and for Southern Annular Mode positive, negative and neutral periods, suggest that the spatial patterns of wave number 3 shift between subsets. The results also indicate that El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Southern Annular Mode affect stationary wave interactions between sea-ice and atmospheric fields on intraseasonal timescales.

Attenuation of visible radiation by falling snow was studied by a method based on brightness contrast between topographic features and the adjacent sky. Extinction coefficient and visual range are related to bulk snow density, and are compared with data for Antarctic blizzards. Since attenuation depends more on the size and concentration of discrete particles than on the mass density of suspended snow, the process of particle aggregation and snow-flake formation during fall is considered by collision theory, and an expression describing aggregation effects is developed. This offers an explanation for the relative constancy of particle concentration observed at ground level during snowfalls of varying intensity. Since there is no strong justification for relating extinction coefficient to snow density, an empirical correlation between extinction coefficient and precipitation rate is given for practical use. It is shown that visual range estimated by eye in hilly terrain may be less than the true value, since sky brightness is locally reduced over broad hill-tops with low albedo.

The Menzies Range in the southern Prince Charles Mountains, Antarctica, records at least four intervals of Cenozoic terrestrial glacigene sedimentation, and two periods of glacial erosion. The oldest Cenozoic strata, here named the Pardoe Formation, are >240 m thick, and consist of variable diamicts with subordinate sandstones and minor laminated lacustrine siltstones. The Pardoe Formation overlies a rugged erosion surface cut into Precambrian basement. Two subsequent Cenozoic sequences are here named informally the Trail diamicts and the younger Amphitheatre diamicts. The latter infilled the lower regions of an extremely rugged erosion surface, many components of which still dominate the present topography. The palaeodrainage of this erosion surface is markedly discordant with that of the older erosion surface underlying the Pardoe Formation. These three depositional events and the two associated erosion surfaces record warmer climates and increased snow accumulation under conditions of temperate wet-based glaciation. During the excavation of the sub-Amphitheatre diamict erosion surface, the East Antarctic ice sheet was either absent, further inland or the height of its surface relative to the Menzies Range was considerably lower than at present. The fourth and youngest depositional episode, recorded by a veneer of boulder gravel distributed along the northern flank of the Menzies Range, is from dry-based glacier ice, and assumed to be <2.6 Myr.

Remotely sensed land surface temperature (LST) data, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST thermal infrared products, are useful for monitoring surface processes on the Greenland Ice Sheet in remote areas but must be validated to ensure accuracy. Using data from the Programme for Monitoring the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE), we conducted a MODIS LST validation (MOD/MYD11 C6 swath level product) using radiometric in-situ skin temperature records from 2014 to 2017 over 17 PROMICE sites mostly in the ice sheet's ablation zone. There is a significant cold bias in MODIS LST when compared to PROMICE skin temperature, particularly when PROMICE records temperatures below 0°C (mean bias: 2.4 ± 0.01°C mean ± standard error, RMSE = 3.2°C). Multiple linear regression analysis reveals the difference between MODIS LST and PROMICE skin temperature is larger at lower temperatures, lower latent heat fluxes and higher specific humidity. Our results confirm the presence of a progressive cold bias in the MODIS LST that should be considered in use of this product, and we identify and corroborate areas for ongoing algorithm development.

Two sets of bubble-density foliation, one vertical and transverse to flow and one vertical and parallel to flow, developed in the ice of the terminus lobe of Variegated Glacier, Alaska, during the passage of the final stages of the 1982–83 surge in June and July 1983. The transverse foliation is ubiquitous in the lower part of the terminus lobe affected by the surge, but disappears abruptly over a 5 m wide zone at the boundary of the surge, as delineated by measurable strain rates during the surge. The ice at the outermost limit of the transverse foliation experienced compressive total strains no greater than −0.10 (logarithmic), but did briefly experience high strain rates, corresponding to compressive stresses in excess of 0.6 MPa. It is concluded that the transverse foliation was developed as a consequence of high compressive stress rather than high total strains. Experimental evidence of Kamb indicates that bubble migration occurs under similar tectonic conditions to those in the terminus lobe during the surge, and that bubble migration is related to stress rather than finite deformation or rotation of pre-existing structures. Bubble migration may be the mechanism by which the transverse foliation developed during the passage of the surge front.

On 4 July 1986, dye was injected at a point slightly above the equilibrium line on Storglaciären, a small valley glacier in northern Sweden. Just below the equilibrium line, the glacier bed is over-deepened. The dye re-appeared in a stream at the glacier terminus over the next 35 d. This stream normally carries relatively little sediment, in constrast to the situation in another nearby stream that also emerges from the glacier. This suggests that the dye traveled in englacial rather than subglacial conduits. Tracer tests utilizing salt in bore holes in the overdeepening support this interpretation, as the bore holes were draining well above the bed. The dye appeared during three distinct events, suggesting that it became divided into at least three separate parcels shortly after injection. This probably occurred in the crevassed area in the vicinity of the injection point.

The englacial location of the drainage may be explained by the fact that, in order to remain at the pressure melting-point, water in subglacial conduits coming out of the overdeepening may have had to warm up faster than would be possible by viscous heating alone. Such conduits would thus tend to freeze closed.

The formation of frazil in water of different salinities and initial supercoolings was studied in the laboratory. Experiments were conducted both on genuine and artificial sea-waters. From analysing the experimental results, it was found that the production rate of frazil is highly sensitive to the initial supercooling of the water and will increase over three orders of magnitude as the initial supercooling increases from zero to 2° C. By properly non-dimensionalizing the parameters, it was found that the normalized concentration of frazil in water is principally a function of the normalized time. For the rate of production of frazil, however, it was found that the normalized rate of frazil production, besides being a function of the normalized time, is also affected by the salinity and the initial supercooling of the water. Different frazil crystals formed in water of different salinities and initial supercoolings are thought to be the reason for the different curves of frazil production rate. The normalization of parameters requires the determination of some characteristic parameters which were found to be well-defined functions of initial supercooling and salinity.

The potential of capillary forces to retain water in pores is an important property of snow and firn at glaciers. Meltwater suspended in pores does not contribute to runoff and may refreeze during winter, which can affect the climatic mass balance and the subsurface density and temperature. However, measurement of firn water content is challenging and few values have been reported in the literature. Here, we use subsurface temperature and density measured at the accumulation zone of Lomonosovfonna (1200 m a.s.l.), Svalbard, to derive water content of the firn profiles after the 2014 and 2015 melt seasons. We do this by comparing measured and simulated rates of freezing front propagation. The calculated volumetric water content of firn is ~1.0–2.5 vol.% above the depth of 5 m and <0.5 vol.% below. Results derived using different thermistor strings suggest a prominent lateral variability in firn water content. Reported values are considerably lower than those commonly used in snow/firn models. This is interpreted as a result of preferential water flow in firn leaving dry volumes within wetted firn. This suggests that the implementation of irreducible water content values below 0.5 vol.% within snow/firn models should be considered at the initial phase of water infiltration.

Ice-spike observations in nature have sparked much interest in the scientific and non-scientific communities alike, yet most research performed thus far has been largely qualitative. We have conducted a quantitative, systematic laboratory investigation in order to assess theories explaining ice-spike growth and to determine the conditions conducive to it. We observed ice-spike growth using time-lapse digital photography, using two water types in two different containers. We observed that ice spikes occurred much more frequently in distilled water than in tap water. Digital images were analyzed to determine the growth rate of the ice spikes. Water temperature was recorded throughout the freezing process, and the cooling rate was used to estimate a bulk heat transfer coefficient. Finally, a simple model, based on mass conservation, was derived and was found to give useful predictions of ice-spike growth rate.

Surface topography of etched ice crystals was examined by a scanning electron microscope in combination with a Formvar replica method. The deep focus of the scanning electron microscope allowed observation of the sharply three-dimensional topography of ice surfaces. Various useful information was obtained from microphotographs of etched basal and prismatic planes, fractured surfaces, and grain boundaries formed between microcrystals of ice.

The retreat rates of Triangular Glacier since 1979 and its mass changes during the period 2014/15–2019/20 indicate the sensitive response of small ice masses on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula to air temperature evolution. This cirque glacier in the northern part of James Ross Island receded rapidly during the period of regional warming in the late 20th century, losing 30.8% of its surface area between 1979 and 2006 (−1.7% a−1). The retreat rate then dropped to −0.3% a−1 following the regional cooling trend, but started to accelerate again (−0.8 to −2.3% a−1) with increasing air temperature since the summer 2014/15. Since the glaciological year 2015/16, Triangular Glacier has experienced enhanced snow melt, wind scour and permanent mass loss with annual mass balance ranging from −0.08 ± 0.35 to −0.56 ± 0.25 m w.e. The largest mass loss was observed in the glaciological year 2019/20, which included the warmest summer of the observation period. The cumulative mass balance of −1.66 ± 0.83 m w.e. over the years 2014/15–2019/20 is consistent with the termination of the positive mass-balance period that occurred in the north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula from 2009/10 to 2014/15.

A seismic survey was conducted during the winter of 1974 75 to determine the extent to which signals from avalanches can be detected using standard seismic techniques. The results of this investigation show that signals associated with avalanching snow-packs have characteristic patterns which differentiate them from signals of extraneous origin. The records of several of these signals are presented and discussed.

The author describes the ice in Crown Prince Gustav Channel on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica, based mainly on observations made by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1945–48. He considers that the ice in the northern half of the Channel is landfast sea ice which may persist for more than one season, and, that in the southern half it is shelf ice of the same origin as the Larsen Shelf Ice. He concludes that this shelf ice in the southern part of the Channel is part of the Larsen Shelf Ice.

Empirical data on the volume/area scaling of glaciers and ice caps are compared with theoretical models of longitudinal glacier profiles. Ice caps are described well by theoretical solutions of the differential equations modeling longitudinal profiles, but glaciers for which the surface slope is approximated by the ice thickness divided by the length are not. A power-law profile recently derived analytically, reproduces exactly the thickness-length scaling, first predicted by scaling analysis for ice caps.

A noticeable trait of iceberg ice is the presence of several sets of planar features cross-cutting each other at various angles. Close-up views of these features show that they consist of an array of individual air inclusions that differ in size, shape and spatial distribution. In none of the cases resolvable at the scale of our observations were these inclusions physically linked to form a continuous fracture plane, although they may have originated as such. All postdate the formation of ice veins.

Particle size, particle speed and airflow speed have been measured in the powder snow clouds of avalanches to investigate the suspension and transportation processes of snow particles. The avalanches were artificially triggered at the Lautaret full-scale avalanche test-site (French Alps) where an ultrasonic anemometer and a snow particle counter were setup in an avalanche track for measurements. Relatively large particles were observed during passage of the avalanche head and then the size of the particles slightly decreased as the core of the avalanche passed the measurement station. The particle size distribution was well fitted by a gamma distribution function. A condition for suspension of particles within the cloud based on the ratio of vertical velocity fluctuation to particle settling velocity suggests that the large particles near the avalanche head are not lifted up by turbulent diffusion, but rather ejected by a process involving collisions between the avalanche flow and the rough snow surface. Particle speeds were lower than the airflow speed when large particles were present in the powder cloud.

The method of the artificial release of slab avalanches by explosives is investigated. The effect of a detonation on a seasonal snow cover is measured and discussed. The attenuation of the resulting stress waves as a function of the type of explosive used, the position of the charge relative to the snow surface, the snow-stratification profile, and the type of ground are determined in field experiments. The effective ranges of shots in potential fracture zones are estimated.

Boreholes were drilled in South Cascade Glacier to investigate the hydraulics of subglacial water flow. Results indicate that subglacial water pressures are generally close to local ice-overburden pressures and that a subglacial debris layer probably exists. Calculations indicate that the range of hydraulic conductivity of this layer is 10−7-10−4m−1. The borehole water levels generally increased during the ablation season and may be caused by a seasonal evolution in the permeability of the debris layer. Water in the debris layer drains to a subglacial conduit, the existence of which is inferred by large diurnal variations in the water level of one borehole. These levels commonly reached the bottom of the glacier, indicating near-atmospheric pressures in the conduit.
