Radar returns from valley side-walls may complicate the identification of the glacier bed when examining airborne radio-echo sounding (RES) records. We describe simple visualization techniques for aiding analysis of RES data with the aim of resolving these ambiguities, making use of high-resolution satellite imagery. An application of the technique is illustrated using RES data obtained from part of Stygge Glacier, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada.

Spectral analysis of time series of a c. 17 ± 0.3 year core, calibrated for total ß activity recovered from Sentik Glacier (4908m) Ladakh, Himalaya, yields several recognizable periodicities including subannual, annual, and multi-annual. The time-series, include both chemical data (chloride, sodium, reactive iron, reactive silicate, reactive phosphate, ammonium, δD, δ(18O) and pH) and physical data (density, debris and ice-band locations, and microparticles in size grades 0.50 to 12.70 μm). Source areas for chemical species investigated and general air-mass circulation defined from chemical and physical time-series are discussed to demonstrate the potential of such studies in the development of paleometeorological data sets from remote high-alpine glacierized sites such as the Himalaya.

A partly phenomenological theory and model are constructed of cyclically surging glaciers. During the after-surge portion of a surge cycle the lower portion of a glacier becomes increasingly stagnant. The upper part of the glacier gradually becomes more active as both its thickness and the magnitude of its basal shear stress increase. In the region between these two parts, called by us the trigger zone, the value of the derivative of the basal shear stress in the longitudinal direction of the glacier gradually increases with time. The pressure gradient in the water at the base of a glacier is related to the derivative of the basal shear stress. The pressure gradient decreases as the basal shear-stress gradient increases. The pressure gradient actually can take on negative values, a condition which produces “up-hill” water flow at the base of a glacier. A surge is started in the trigger zone when water is dammed there by a zero water-pressure gradient. The zone of fast-sliding velocities propagates up the glacier from the trigger zone with a velocity of the order of a surge velocity. The fast-sliding velocity zone also propagates down the glacier because of increased melt-water production.

Quantitative investigations have been made of ice-cored dirt cones on Bersaerkerbræ in north-east Greenland. Experiments were also undertaken to evaluate field observations. Measurements included: maximum cone dimensions, sediment thickness and particle size, cone growth rates, slope angles and the temperature distribution within the debris layer and ice core. Particle size, which has not been stressed in previous studies, and related liquid consistency limits, appear as the dominant controls in cone formation, independent of debris thickness within the observed range of 10 mm to 125 mm. A threshold grain-size for dirt-cone inception was found, between 0.2 mm and 0.6 mm. The growth of cones was usually not more than 50% of the ablation over “clean” ice. Temperature measurements within dirt cones has enabled heat-flow studies to be made, evaluating the thermal conductivity of a sediment layer and the heat transfer involved in melting the ice core. A simple model of dirt-cone dynamics is proposed, characterized by negative feedbacks and describing a steady-state system.

Energy fluxes and resultant short-term ablation rates were measured at a ground-ice slump on south-west Banks Island. Net radiation, as a proportion of the ablation flux, is greatest on days with high incident solar radiation, whereas on overcast days, sensible- and latent-heat inputs may supply more than half the necessary energy. A multiple regression equation using net radiation and a turbulent-energy term as independent variables explains 79% of the variation in the measured ablation fluxes. Overall, at least 60% of the energy used for ablation at the slump is derived from net radiation.

The mechanics underlying ice–skate friction remain uncertain despite over a century of study. In the 1930s, the theory of self-lubrication from frictional heat supplanted an earlier hypothesis that pressure melting governed skate friction. More recently, researchers have suggested that a layer of abraded wear particles or the presence of quasi-liquid molecular layers on the surface of ice could account for its slipperiness. Here, we assess the dominant hypotheses proposed to govern ice–skate friction and describe experiments conducted in an indoor skating rink aimed to provide observations to test these hypotheses. Our results indicate that the brittle failure of ice under rapid compression plays a strong role. Our observations did not confirm the presence of full-contact water films and are more consistent with the presence of lubricating ice-rich slurries at discontinuous high-pressure zones (HPZs). The presence of ice-rich slurries supporting skates through HPZs merges pressure-melting, abrasion and lubricating films as a unified hypothesis for why skates are so slippery across broad ranges of speeds, temperatures and normal loads. We suggest tribometer experiments to overcome the difficulties of investigating these processes during actual skating trials.

An exact, analytic description of the steady, downhill flow of a viscous ice stream across a no-slip to free-slip transition in basal boundary condition suggests ways in which such transitions might be detected by observations of ice-stream surface properties. We find that the best expression of this transition is in the free-surface profile, which dips over the point of transition and becomes horizontal far downstream. The streamwise velocity at the surface shows a gradual change across the transition, and this is in disagreement with previous studies which suggest a marked change. Basal shear stress and basal pressure exhibit singularities at the point of transition. As concluded in previous study, the former singularity is a likely point of strong basal erosion. The latter singularity is problematical, however, because it violates the assumptions which make the exact solution possible. It is not clear how this problem can be overcome without appealing to thermodynamics, non-Newtonian material properties, cavitation or wake separation.

The Menzies Range in the southern Prince Charles Mountains, Antarctica, records at least four intervals of Cenozoic terrestrial glacigene sedimentation, and two periods of glacial erosion. The oldest Cenozoic strata, here named the Pardoe Formation, are >240 m thick, and consist of variable diamicts with subordinate sandstones and minor laminated lacustrine siltstones. The Pardoe Formation overlies a rugged erosion surface cut into Precambrian basement. Two subsequent Cenozoic sequences are here named informally the Trail diamicts and the younger Amphitheatre diamicts. The latter infilled the lower regions of an extremely rugged erosion surface, many components of which still dominate the present topography. The palaeodrainage of this erosion surface is markedly discordant with that of the older erosion surface underlying the Pardoe Formation. These three depositional events and the two associated erosion surfaces record warmer climates and increased snow accumulation under conditions of temperate wet-based glaciation. During the excavation of the sub-Amphitheatre diamict erosion surface, the East Antarctic ice sheet was either absent, further inland or the height of its surface relative to the Menzies Range was considerably lower than at present. The fourth and youngest depositional episode, recorded by a veneer of boulder gravel distributed along the northern flank of the Menzies Range, is from dry-based glacier ice, and assumed to be <2.6 Myr.

The retreat of Laika Glacier (4.4 km2), part of a small ice cap situated on Coburg Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, is analyzed using field data, satellite remote sensing and mass-balance modelling. We present a methodology for merging various data types and numerical models and investigate the temporal and spatial changes of a remote glacier during the past five decades. A glacier mass-balance and surface-evolution model is run for the period 1959–2006, forced with in situ weather observations and climate re-analysis data (ERA-40, NARR). The model is calibrated using the ice-volume change observed between 1959 and 1971, and measured seasonal mass balances. Calculated glacier surface elevation is validated against ICESat GLAS altimeter data and ASTER-derived elevation. Landsatderived glacier outlines are used to validate calculated ice extent. The piedmont tongue of Laika Glacier has retreated considerably and is in a state of disintegration. The modelled glacier mass balance between 1959 and 2006 was −0.41 m w.e. a−1, on average. Model results indicate a significant trend towards higher mass-balance gradients. A complete wastage of Laika Glacier by 2100 is predicted by model runs based on climate scenarios.

VLF surface-impedance measurements were made along four traverses on the Antarctic ice sheet in the vicinity of Casey base. Computer modelling of the surface-impedance data allowed ice-depth predictions to be made; predictions which are almost independent of ice temperature for ice depths less than 800 m. Results agree with ice-radar and other ice-depth data. Surface-impedance anomalies were observed close to moraines and crevasses in the ice sheet. The technique is fast and the instrumentation sufficiently portable for single-person operation.

Between 16 and 19 June 1981 a large water pocket of volume 183 000 m3 burst from glacier de Tsidjiore Nouve. From hourly stream discharge and suspended sediment concentration observations a suspended sediment output of 1 674 × 103 kg was calculated. The transport of bed-load was estimated at 3 840 × 103 kg, hence a total quantity of around 5 500 × 103 kg of sediment were removed from the catchment, including the pro-glacial field, in the four days of the outburst.

Attenuation of visible radiation by falling snow was studied by a method based on brightness contrast between topographic features and the adjacent sky. Extinction coefficient and visual range are related to bulk snow density, and are compared with data for Antarctic blizzards. Since attenuation depends more on the size and concentration of discrete particles than on the mass density of suspended snow, the process of particle aggregation and snow-flake formation during fall is considered by collision theory, and an expression describing aggregation effects is developed. This offers an explanation for the relative constancy of particle concentration observed at ground level during snowfalls of varying intensity. Since there is no strong justification for relating extinction coefficient to snow density, an empirical correlation between extinction coefficient and precipitation rate is given for practical use. It is shown that visual range estimated by eye in hilly terrain may be less than the true value, since sky brightness is locally reduced over broad hill-tops with low albedo.

A theoretical expression is derived for the rate of increase in the density of a compact of uniform ice spheres due to volume diffusion in the ice. The diffusion occurs due to the existence of high concentrations of vacancies in the ice just beneath the concave surfaces of the necks which grow between the ice spheres. Accurate measurements on the densification of a compact of ice spheres as a function of time, temperature, and particle size are found to be in excellent agreement with the theory The importance of this process in the metamorphism of dry snow at a uniform temperature is discussed.

Short-term glacier velocity variations typically occur when a water input is accommodated by an increase in the subglacial water pressure. Although these velocity variations have been well documented on many glaciers, few studies have considered them on glaciers where heavy rain and glacier melt occur year-round. This study investigates the relationship between water inputs and glacier velocity on Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand. We installed six GNSS stations across the lower glacier during austral summer 2010/11 and one station during summer 2012/13. Glacier velocity remained elevated at all stations for ∼7 days following large rain events. During diurnal melt events, we find velocity variations in the early afternoon (12:00–16:00) at 600 m a.s.l. and in the late evening (20:00–01:00) at 400 m a.s.l. We hypothesize that the late-evening velocity variations occurred as an upstream region of high subglacial water pressures and accelerated ice motion propagated downstream. This mechanism may also explain the increased longitudinal compression and transverse extension across the lower glacier during speed-up events. Our results indicate that the subglacial drainage system likely decreases in efficiency upstream and that the water input variability can still cause short-term velocity variations despite the large year-round water inputs.

An opportunity to analyse the mechanism for the formation of a basal ice layer was provided by Glacier de Tsanfleuron in the Swiss Alps. This glacier has some lateral subglacial cavities in which a basal ice layer forms on the bedrock floor and is subsequently incorporated at the base of the glacier. Petrographic and crystallographic analyses of the different types of ice have provided a means of investigating the successive stages of the process. These analyses show major structural changes which provide field confirmation of the deformation mechanisms studied by several authors in laboratory experiments.

Glacial extent and mass balance are sensitive climate proxies providing solid information on past climatic conditions. However, series of annual mass-balance measurements of more than 60 years are scarce. To our knowledge, this is the first time the latewood density data (MXD) of the Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.) have been used to reconstruct the summer mass balance (Bs) of an Alpine glacier. The MXD-based Bs well correlates with a Bs reconstruction based on the May to September temperature. Winter precipitation has been used as an independent proxy to infer the winter mass balance and to obtain an annual mass-balance (Bn) estimate dating back to the glaciological year 1811/12. The reconstructed MXD/precipitation-based Bn well correlates with the data both of the Careser and of other Alpine glaciers measured by the glaciological method. A number of critical issues should be considered in both proxies, including non-linear response of glacial mass balance to temperature, bedrock topography, ice thinning and fragmentation, MXD acquisition and standardization methods, and finally the ‘divergence problem’ responsible for the recently reduced sensitivity of the dendrochronological data. Nevertheless, our results highlight the possibility of performing MXD-based dendroglaciological reconstructions using this stable and reliable proxy.

Quartz, feldspar and chlorite, the principal minerals in a basal till from the Halasi River catchment in the Altay Mountains, northwestern China, are present in approximately equal concentrations in the coarse fraction of the till, 1.0-0.125 mm. Quartz concentrations are significantly higher than those of the other two minerals in the 0.125-0.016 mm size range. Feldspar and chlorite concentrations are higher than those of quartz in the finest fraction. Quartz has a strong preferred mode at 0.063-0.032 mm. Feldspar and chlorite have two weak modes in the silt-size range, one between 0.063 and 0.032 mm and the other between 0.016 and 0.004 mm.

Thin sections of oriented impregnated samples were used to study crushing and abrasion. Over 2700 daughter particles were identified as products of comminution of 925 parent grains. Quartz and feldspar are most likely to be broken into two particles of roughly equal size, as are fine chlorite grains. However, owing to their weakness and cleavage, larger grains of chlorite tend to he split into more than two daughter particles.

Sizes of the daughter grains were measured and sizes of the original parent grains were estimated. Mean parent grain-sizes for quartz, feldspar and chlorite are 0.129, 0.078 and 0.059 mm, respectively, whereas mean daughter grain-sizes are 0.068,0.041 and 0.024 mm, respectively. The greater percentage reduction in the size of chlorite reflects its tendency to break into more than two daughter particles.

Most grains tend to be crushed. Only a few large particles seem to have suffered from abrasion.

The partitioning of resistive force between the bed and sides of Ice Stream B, Antarctica, is obtained for three large areas that have been measured using repeat aerial photogrammetry. Problems associated with data errors and local variations in ice strength and velocity are reduced by considering the areally averaged budget of forces for each photo block. Results indicate that the bed under Ice Stream B must be very weak and unable to provide much resistance. Mechanical control on this ice stream emanates almost entirely from the lateral margins.
