Glacial retreat in response to warming climates in the arid Xinjiang region of northwestern China directly impacts downstream water resources available for local communities. We used high-resolution satellite imagery from 1969 to 2014 to delineate spatial changes in 54 active glaciers in the upper Kaidu River Basin in the Tian Shan as well as their past expanses during the Little Ice Age (LIA). We manually delineated their boundaries based on the interpretation of glacial, geomorphic and topographic features. From the total glacier surface area, we estimated glacier volume and mass. From 1969 to 2014, glacier area decreased by 10.1 ± 1.0 km2 (relative loss of 34.2 ± 3.5%) and mass by 1.025 ± 0.108 Gt (relative loss of 43 ± 4.6%). From the LIA maximum (est. 1586 CE) to 1969, relative losses were less (25.7 ± 4.3% area loss and 33.1 ± 5.7% mass loss). Our results indicate that glacier recession is accelerating over time and that the glaciers are currently losing over 1.5 times more relative area than elsewhere in the Tian Shan. Using linear and non-linear projections, we estimate that these glaciers may disappear between 2050 and 2150 CE if climatic warming continues at the same pace.

Calving glaciers are highly sensitive to bedrock geometry near their terminus. To understand the mechanisms controlling rapid calving glaciers’ mass loss, we measured the lake topography in front of four lake-terminating glaciers in the southern Patagonian icefield. Using remotely sensed surface elevation data, we calculated flotation height and surface slope and compared those with changes in ice-front position, surface speed and surface elevation. Rapid retreat accompanied by rapid flow acceleration and ice surface steepening was observed at Glaciar Upsala from 2008–2011, and at O'Higgins and Viedma glaciers from 2016–present. Surface lowering in the lower part of Glaciar Upsala reached 30 m a−1 and was 18 m a−1 and 12 m a−1 at O'Higgins and Viedma glaciers, respectively. Near- or super-buoyant conditions were observed prior to these events, leading to gradual flow acceleration due to low effective pressure and decoupling from the bed. The super-buoyant condition and gradual acceleration imply full-thickness buoyant calving, which causes the ice front to retreat from the shallow bedrock topography with substantial flow acceleration. We conclude that the buoyancy force plays an important role in the rapid mass loss of lake-terminating glaciers in southern Patagonia.

Total snow depth is determined by measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic wave packet emitted from a sonic transmitter above the snow surface and reflected from the snow surface back to the receiver/transmitter system. The light-weight system is battery powered (operating time without battery change at least 8 months) and can be fixed to any post above the snow surface. The absolute precision is better than ±0.03 m. Data and commands are transmitted by a single two-wire system up to several kilometres.

Surface strain rates around the southeastern dome of Hans Tausen Iskappe in Peary Land, North Greenland (82.5° N, 27.5° W), are determined from global positioning system surveys of a strain net. Average longitudinal surface strain rate increases towards the dome, from (1.4 ± 0.2) × 10−4 a−1 at 5–10 ice thicknesses from the divide to (2.4 ± 1.0) × 10−4 a−1 within 1 ice thickness from the divide. Analysis of the data shows that the ice cap is presently building up within the strain net with an average rate of 〈∂H/∂t〉 = + 0.04 ± 0.02 m a−1. Assuming a uniform thickening, the shape factor of the horizontal velocity (the ratio between the vertically averaged horizontal velocity and the horizontal surface velocity) decreases towards the dome, from 0.9 at a distance of 10 ice thicknesses from the dome to 0.5 at the dome based on application of the continuity equation. Our results indicate that a region with anomalous flow is formed around the dome, supporting recent indications reported by Vaughan and others (1999). It is not possible from our data to constrain parameters of the flow law, because there is no independent estimate of the significant present thickening of the central part of the ice cap and its pattern around the dome.

During the past 20 years, multi-channel radar emerged as a key tool for deciphering an ice sheet's internal architecture. To assign ages to radar reflections and connect them over large areas in the ice sheet, the layer genesis has to be understood on a microphysical scale. Synthetic radar trace modelling based on the dielectric profile of ice cores allows for the assignation of observed physical properties’ variations on the decimetre scale to radar reflectors extending from the coring site to a regional or even whole-ice-sheet scale. In this paper we rely on the available dielectric profiling data of the northern Greenland deep ice cores: NGRIP, NEEM and EGRIP. The three records are well suited for assigning an age model to the stratigraphic radar-mapped layers, and linking up the reflector properties to observations in the cores. Our modelling results show that the internal reflections are mainly due to conductivity changes. Furthermore, we deduce fabric characteristics at the EGRIP drill site from two-way-travel-time differences of along and across-flow polarized radarwave reflections of selected horizons (below 980 m). These indicate in deeper parts of the ice column an across-flow concentrated c-axis fabric.

Ice-core drilling to depths of 200–300 m is an important part of research studies concerned with paleoclimate reconstruction and anthropogenic climate change. However, conventional drilling methods face difficulties due to firn permeability. We have developed an electromechanical ice-core drill with air reverse circulation at the hole bottom. We believe that the new drilling system will recover ice cores faster than shallow auger drills, with high efficiency and low energy consumption. The theoretically estimated up-hole speed of the airflow should be not <7.7 m s−1 to allow proper removal of ice cuttings from the borehole bottom. The computer simulation and test results showed that the design of the new ice-coring drill is feasible. The maximum allowed penetration rate depends by square law on airflow.

The laws of wind-speed variation with height and their modification with stability are discussed and applied to observations in the first 2 m. over various cold surfaces. An exponential law is superior save in frequent, near-neutral conditions, but the logarithmic law is superior in neutral and again in really stable conditions. A power law and a logarithmic-plus-linear law give the best fit with the data only at moderate stabilities. A logarithmic-plus-cubic law of wind speed is evolved that permits suppression of linear additions to the logarithmic law at two distinct stabilities. A power form of variation of Richardson number with height is found and compared with a linear form. The former is applied with the logarithmicplus-cubic law to the observed data, though with limited success. Eddy-viscosity coefficients for the different laws are compared.

The association between basal hydrology and glacier sliding has become nearly synonymous with the early work of Almut Iken and colleagues. Their research published in the Journal of Glaciology from 1981 to 1986 made an indelible impact on the study of glacier hydromechanics by documenting strong correlations between basal water pressure and short-term ice-flow variations. With a passion for elucidating the physics of glacier-bed processes, Iken herself made fundamental contributions to our theoretical and empirical understanding of the sliding process. From the theoretical bound on basal shear stress, to the inferences drawn from detailed horizontal and vertical velocity measurements, the work of Iken and colleagues continues to inform the interpretation of data from alpine glaciers and has found increasing relevance to observations from the ice sheets.

We analyse the various error sources in the estimation of ice discharge through flux gates, distinguishing the cases with ice-thickness data available for glacier cross-sections or only along the centreline. For the latter, we analyse the performance of three U-shaped cross-sectional approaches. We apply this methodology to glaciers of the Canadian High Arctic. The velocity field is the main error source for small and medium-size glaciers (discharge <100 Mt a−1) with low velocities (<100 m a−1), while for large glaciers (discharge >100 Mt a−1) with high velocities (>100 m a−1) the error in cross-sectional area dominates. Thinning/thickening between ice-thickness and velocity measurements should be considered, as it implies systematic errors up to 8% in our study. The U-shaped parabolic approach, which allows for an adjusted estimation when the ice-thickness measurement point is displaced from the glacier centreline, performs best, with small bias and admissible standard error. We observe an increase of ice discharge from the main glaciers (Trinity and Wykeham) of the Prince of Wales Icefield from 2015 to 2016, by 5 and 20%, respectively, followed by a decrease in 2017, by 10 and 15%, respectively. Belcher Glacier, of the Devon Ice Cap, maintains similar discharges during 2015–17.

A number of theoretical and empirical studies have indicated that many individual characteristics of ice formed by processes of net basal adfreezing may be sensitive to the rate of propagation of the freezing front through the reservoir concerned. The effects of freezing rate on the the stable-isotope chemistry and crystallography of ice, in addition to the disposition and character of included debris and gas are reported. Unidirectional freezing through a cylindrical reservoir containing various water–sediment mixtures has been conducted in the laboratory and the resulting cores analysed for debris and gas disposition and ice-crystal size and fabric. The data lend support to inferences drawn from studies concerned with specific ice properties and an idealized suite of characteristics is developed which may be diagnostic of basal ice formed by net adfreezing.

In Les météores (1637), in the midst of a father far-fetched theory of their origin, Descartes incorporated a detailed description, from actual observation, of a variety or kinds of snow crystals and hail particles. These even include the tsuzumi crystals, described as “wheels joined two by two by an axle” or as “little crystal columns decorated at each end with a six-petalled rose”, and such exceptional forms as twelve-rayed and eight-rayed stars. The accompanying diagrams, which have been reproduced a number of times, are distinctly inferior to his verbal description.

A deformation mechanism map for pure polycrystalline ice of 2 mm grain diameter is constructed, New sub-regions in the dislocation glide region are proposed: dislocation glide with crack formation, dislocation creep, and fracture at high stresses above about 1 MPa. The boundary between the dislocation creep and DGC regions is determined by the onset of cleavage cracks due to piled-up dislocations near grain boundaries. The fracture region is that area of the map where fracture occurs readily when the ice is subjected to a rapid deformation rate exceeding 10-3 s-1. Experimental results of the stress dependence of the compressive deformation rate of polycrystalline ice are compared with the map. The effect of changes in the creep activation energy near the melting point is discussed together with those of other factors.

In January 2000 nine snow sensors were deployed in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, along a 355 km transect from Kvitkuven near the shelf edge via the Finnish research station, Aboa, to the Amundsenisen plateau. The purpose was to test a sensor system for spatio-temporal variations in temperature across the snow–air interface and snow accumulation/ablation, which includes atmospheric net balance and migrating snow dunes. In the dry snow conditions, environmental static electricity interfered with data transfer; several sensors were disabled early, while the longest record reached 6 months. Along the main transect, the year 2000 mass balance ranged from 52 to 221 mm w.e., largely following spatial patterns seen by other researchers. The level increased toward the edge of the ice sheet; unloading of drifting snow as the slope flattens, rather than increased snowfall as previously thought, may be responsible for this. At the Högisen ice dome site the mass balance was 897 mm w.e., possibly due to unloading of wind-blown snow, as katabatic winds are locally forced uphill. This mechanism is important to maintain such topographic features along the Antarctic ice sheet margin. Major precipitation events occurred at 3–5 week intervals and much of the precipitation fell before mid-June. The daily signal in temperature disappeared after the autumn equinox, then the spectrum displayed a broad peak at synoptic frequencies. Potential temperature decreased towards the shelf edge, displaying a pattern consistent with strong inversions and suggesting that strong evaporative cooling is associated with the katabatic winds.

Knowledge of glacier equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) changes and trends in time is essential for future predictions of glacier volumes. We present a novel method for determining trends in ELA change at McCall Glacier, Alaska, USA, over the last 50 years, based on mapping of the cold–temperate transition surface (CTS), marking the limit between cold and temperate ice of a polythermal glacier. Latent heat release from percolating meltwater and precipitation keeps the ice column temperate in the accumulation area. A change from accumulation to ablation zone reduces this heat release, leading locally to glacier ice cooling. By mapping the CTS along the whole glacier length using radio-echo sounding and employing a thermodynamic model, the timing of the cooling was determined, from which past ELAs were constructed. These are in accord with mass-balance measurements carried out on McCall Glacier since the 1950s. We show that with a warming climate, McCall Glacier tends to cool in a counter-intuitive way.

Distance measurements using an automated electronic distance-measurement system in the north cirque of Storglaciären, Sweden, during the summer of 1989, revealed a diurnal variation in glacier speed. Amplitude and timing of the diurnal cycle correlate well with the timing and intensity of the diurnal temperature cycle, indicating that speed responds to variations in daily melt with a lag of approximately 4 h. One 2 d period of non-diurnal velocity variations corresponded with a large rainfall event. Finite-element modeling suggests that these velocity variations must be closely related to water inputs in the cirque rather than to longitudinal coupling with lower parts of the glacier.

The optimum continuation of series of mass-balance measurements and their extension to unmonitored glaciers are important problems in contemporary glaciology. For this purpose, two new practical survey methods are proposed, based on the linear-balance variations model of Lliboutry (1974). The first method is a simplified application of the linear model that uses only a data set limited to selected fixed-measurement sites. It was developed to obtain the mass-balance variation in cases where data are too scarce to obtain the global mass balance or to apply the Lliboutry algorithm. This simplified linear model is used with the 8 years’ of surveys on glacier d’Argentière. The second method uses the continuity equation to derive the mass balance of a glacier sector delimited by two cross-profiles where the surface velocities, surface altitudes, and depths are known. By using this continuity method, the entire mass-balance series is established for a sector of glacier de Gébroulaz (Vanoise area, France) from 1908 to 1950, as well as for two sectors of Unteraargletscher (Oberland, Switzerland) from 1924 to 1981.
