The heat balance of an Alaskan mountain glacier located close to the sea is calculated for a period of 16 d in midsummer—a period which is typical of the summer in this region in its high cloudiness and in its temperature and humidity conditions. The radiative and the combined sensible and latent heat components are found to contribute equally to the observed high rate of ice melting.

The refreezing rate of a borehole drilled through a 252 m thick region of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, is determined using oceanographic measurements over two periods of a day. We first use a method based on the conservation of salt in the supercooled salt water of the borehole. This is compared to a model using a numerical solution of the heat equation to find the temperature distribution in the host ice, allowing ice growth to be calculated from the balance of heat fluxes at the ice/water interface. This second method broadly confirms the refreezing rates deduced from salinity measurements, giving confidence in the generalization of this simple heat-flux model to predict refreezing rates of other boreholes. Predictions from both are subject to uncertainty due to the poorly defined value of the solid fraction of ice that freezes in a supercooled volume of sea water. This is taken to be 0.5 ± 0.1 throughout this study. The predicted rates are also strongly dependent on the initial and boundary conditions chosen, but results show the initial diameter of 600 mm decreases at a rate of ~3–5 mm h−1 in an ice shelf with a minimum temperature of −22°C.

Establishing an accurate chronology is crucial for interpretation of ice core-based climatic records. While high snow accumulation rates characterise coastal Antarctica, thus enabling recovery of highly resolved climatic records, summertime melting at such low-elevation sites offers challenges in establishing a reliable chronological framework through traditional approaches using the seasonality of stable water isotope and ionic proxy records. Here, we assess visual stratigraphy (VS) obtained from line-scan images as a proxy for annual layer counting in firn section (top 50 m) of the IND-36/B9 ice core (dated 1919–2016 CE) from the Djupranen Ice Rise in central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. We also used these images to obtain melt history for the site and found that traditional thickness-based quantification of melt proportion results in significant overestimations. Since density has dominant control on VS profile over the firn section, we first used circulant single-spectrum analysis to remove the secular trend and then we extracted the seasonal VS signals attributed to dust and sea-salt inclusions. We find that melt layers do not significantly alter the VS records if masked during pre-processing. The age–depth model based on the reconstructed VS profile revealed an excellent match with identified time-markers within an uncertainty of ±2 years.

The density of glacier ice containing a given amount of air can be computed if it is assumed that both ice and air are subjected to a pressure due to the weight of overlying material. In this way it is possible to deduce the form that a curve of density versus depth should have for ice of a constant air content. Reasons for the divergence of observed depth-density profiles from those predicted by this theory are discussed, in particular the effect of the plastic-viscous behaviour of ice, which results in an air pressure differing from the hydrostatic pressure of the ice above. The empirical power-law relation between depth and density is discussed in the light of this theory, and is also used to derive relations for useful parameters characterizing the densification process such as rate of subsidence and rate of densification in terms of the depth, accumulation, and the constants entering the power law.

Contemporary processes of moraine development at the margins of polar glaciers encompass a wide range of subtly different mechanisms. Two types of “controlled” moraine evolution, applicable to hummocks and transverse moraine ridges, are identified from Wright Lower Glacier and Webb Glacier, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Type 1 moraine complexes involve a relatively abundant supply of supraglacial debris, the development of transverse thrust blocks in the ablation-zone ice and the subsequent re-arrangement of ablation debris in ablation cusps and on inactive thrust blocks. Relict landform suites, apparently formed in this manner, reveal large coarse-grained hummocks inset behind moraine ridge remnants.

Type 2 moraines may develop where the supply of supraglacial debris is meagre but the growth of ablation cusps concentrates primarily englacial debris into small irregular hummocks. The gravel component of this debris is usually of finer texture than for type 1 deposits, reflecting abrasion/attrition effects of prior englacial transportation. Transverse moraine ridges may or may not be associated with type 2 hummocks, depending on local variations of ice motion, ice decay, and debris supply.

Observations of teleseismic earthquakes using broadband seismometers on the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) must contend with environmental and structural processes that do not exist for land-sited seismometers. Important considerations are: (1) a broadband, multi-mode ambient wavefield excited by ocean gravity wave interactions with the ice shelf; (2) body wave reverberations produced by seismic impedance contrasts at the ice/water and water/seafloor interfaces and (3) decoupling of the solid Earth horizontal wavefield by the sub-shelf water column. We analyze seasonal and geographic variations in signal-to-noise ratios for teleseismic P-wave (0.5–2.0 s), S-wave (10–15 s) and surface wave (13–25 s) arrivals relative to the RIS noise field. We use ice and water layer reverberations generated by teleseismic P-waves to accurately estimate the sub-station thicknesses of these layers. We present observations consistent with the theoretically predicted transition of the water column from compressible to incompressible mechanics, relevant for vertically incident solid Earth waves with periods longer than 3 s. Finally, we observe symmetric-mode Lamb waves generated by teleseismic S-waves incident on the grounding zones. Despite their complexity, we conclude that teleseismic coda can be utilized for passive imaging of sub-shelf Earth structure, although longer deployments relative to conventional land-sited seismometers will be necessary to acquire adequate data.

A simple geometric model of glacier volume is derived. The model is based on the assumption that the net mass balance averaged over the glacier surface is related to the summer temperature and winter accumulation at a representative height on the glacier. This height varies with time as climate changes, in ways that are determined by the geometry of the glacier surface. Expressions are derived for the equilibrium glacier volume (Veq) as a function of summer temperature and winter accumulation and for the glacier-response time (τ) as a function of volume.

The model is used to reconstruct the volume of Storglaciären over the period AD 500–1992. Measured net mass-balance data for Storglaciren (1946–92) are used to estimate the model parameters. For the summer temperature forcing, the long tree-ring-based temperature reconstruction for northern Fennoscandia is used to extend a temperature record near the glacier back to AD 500. For the past accumulation forcing, a range of assumptions is tested.

The results show that the prime cause of the decrease in volume of Storglaciären between 1946 and 1992 was relatively low accumulation over 1946–89 as opposed to warm temperatures as previously supposed. Reconstructed volume changes agree well with geomorphological evidence. Where differences occur, deductions can be made about past accumulation. For example, the maximum reconstructed glacier volume is associated with the cold period from 1580 to 1740 but relatively low accumulation probably limited the volume to values not much larger than that achieved around 1916.

The fundamental equation for the longitudinal stress and strain-rate gradient For ice masses with small slope (Budd, (1968)) has been derived exactly for any slope by Nye (1969) who shows that by using a variable longitudinal axis inclination, parallel to the surface, this equation takes on its simplest form. However for the integration of this equation along the ice mass to obtain stress and strain-rates it is necessary to use a fixed axis direction. Here the equation is derived generally for a longitudinal axis of arbitrary inclination, from which the relation between the expressions for the fundamental equation with respect to any longitudinal axis inclination such as parallel to the surface, parallel to the base or horizontal is readily discerned.

An expression for the longitudinal strain-rate is derived to obtain the flow law from longitudinal stress and strain-rate measurements. A single “generalized viscosity function” is introduced to avoid the complication of both the power flow-law parameters varying with stress.

Effects of the retreat of Gåsbreen, southwest Spitsbergen, Svalbard, on the evolution of the ice-dammed lake Goësvatnet are shown for the period 1899-1991. The retreat and lowering of the damming ice masses have changed not only the stored lake volume, the lake geometry and the elevation, slope and length of the subglacial outlet tunnel, but also the frequency and magnitude of outburst floods of Goësvatnet. For the estimation of peak discharges of outburst floods we computed an unbiased regression equation related to the progressive enlargement of subglacial tunnels using lake volume data and peak discharge data from the literature. The derived equation is very similar to the original form of the Clague-Mathews formula and answers the question why this formula has worked well in many cases. Peak discharges of Goësvatnet in various years were estimated by means of the derived equation. Effects of the changed lake geometry as well as the changed length and slope of the subglacial outlet tunnel on the discharge during outbursts will be discussed by means of the Nye-Clarke model. Observation of an outburst of Goësvatnet in summer 1991 indicates that the outbursts may have been triggered by pressure decrease in the subglacial outlet tunnel during increased discharge, whereas flotation of the ice dam can be excluded.

Sea-level projections depend sensitively on the parameterization used for basal slip in glacier flow models. During slip over rock-beds, ice-bed separation increases with slip velocity and basal water pressure. We present a method for using these variables and measured bed topography to estimate the average bed slope in contact with ice, ${\bar m}$. Three-dimensional numerical modeling of slip over small areas of former beds has shown that changes in ${\bar m}$ with increasing slip velocity and water pressure mimic changes in basal drag. Computed values of ${\bar m}$ can thus provide the form of the slip law that relates drag to velocity and water pressure, avoiding computationally expensive numerical modeling. The method is applied to 618 sections from four former glacier beds. Results generally show an increase in ${\bar m}$, and hence inferred basal drag, with slip velocity up to a limiting value, consistent with a regularized Coulomb slip law.

We extend through 2011 an ice-sheet elevation and surface velocity record across three measurement networks established in south-central Greenland by The Ohio State University in 1980/81. Surface parameters are derived from repeat GPS in situ observations, elevations measured by airborne laser altimetry and by the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat). Elevations at the western network steadily rose early in the record by 0.10 ± 0.02 m a-1, but an eastward-progressing thinning trend began in the mid-1990s followed by a ~1m elevation drop at all stations from 2005 to 2011. Measurements weakly suggest a surface velocity increase at the western cluster from 1980 to 2005. At the central network, elevations rose by 0.08 ± 0.02 m a-1 through 2005 and surface speed increased by 0.5–0.7 m a-1. Surface elevations at the central network remained nearly constant thereafter. Thickening occurred at the southern ice divide by 0.05 ± 0.02 m a-1, while east of the divide the ice sheet thinned with increasing rate from the divide, likely because of decreasing accumulation rate trends and drawdown into rapidly retreating coastal glaciers. Our most recent data show that thinning rates are slowing at several sites just east of the divide and that the elevation at the divide continues to increase.

Polycrystalline ice, growing from the melt, can exert a pressure against an extended obstacle, even though it is free to grow in other directions. Pressures of over 0.2 bar (20kN m-2) have been measured with simple apparatus. This phenomenon may be important in explaining the frost-shattering of rocks.

The firn stratification in the accumulation area of an alpine glacier was studied in a 20 m. deep, vertical pit dug in the summer of 1963 on the Kesselwandferner (3,240 m. above sea-level in the Ötztal Alps). The firn is traversed by ice layers up to 25 cm. in thickness which have been formed by the damming up and freezing of melt water. Firn density increases with depth. At a depth of 13 m. (8 yr. old firn) the density reaches 0.80 g./cm.3 as a mean value of one annual net accumulation. Excluding the ice layers, the firn reaches a density of 0.82 g./cm.3 in a 10 yr. old layer at a depth of 16 m. The firn stratification in relation to seasons was studied by analyses of the pollen content in the lower part of the pit, beginning with the horizon “late summer 1954”. The late summer horizons obtained from the firn stratification were confirmed by the pollen analyses.

Mt. Ruapehu, the highest summit in the North Island of New Zealand, is a semi-dormant volcano, whose crater lake was responsible for the flood that caused the disastrous railway accident on Christmas Eve, 1953. Since the last eruption of 1945, when mostly ash was ejected, the crater lake that subsequently formed has been contained by a barrier partly composed of lava and partly of névé and ash. It was the breaking through of the latter weaker portion of the dam that was responsible for the flood of mud and boulders which descended via the Whangaehu Glacier and struck the railway 25 miles (40 km.) distant. There is no evidence of eruptive activity having been the cause of the outbreak. During three ascents of the mountain, observations were made of the glaciers, which have been in a state of gradual shrinkage over a number of years. But during the past Summer—a season of exceptional dryness—the process of ablation and wastage has been greatly accelerated, so that immense areas of rock and ash have freshly emerged, and crevasses and dirt-ridges have taken the place of smooth névé or glacier surfaces.

Glaciers and ice caps around the world are changing quickly, with surge-type behaviour superimposed upon climatic forcing. Here, we study Iceland's second largest ice cap, Langjökull, which has both surge- and non-surge-type outlets. By differencing elevation change with surface mass balance, we estimate the contribution of ice dynamics to elevation change. We use DEMs, in situ stake measurements, regional reanalyses and a mass-balance model to calculate the vertical ice velocity. Thus, we not only compare the geodetic, modelled and glaciological mass balances, but also map spatial variations in glacier dynamics. Maps of emergence and submergence velocity successfully highlight the 1998 surge and subsequent quiescence of one of Langjökull's outlets by visualizing both source and sink areas. In addition to observing the extent of traditional surge behaviour (i.e. mass transfer from the accumulation area to the ablation area followed by recharge of the source area), we see peripheral areas where the surge impinged upon an adjacent ridge and subsequently retreated. While mass balances are largely in good agreement, discrepancies between modelled and geodetic mass balance may be explained by inaccurate estimates of precipitation, saturated adiabatic lapse rate or degree-day factors. Nevertheless, the study was ultimately able to investigate dynamic surge behaviour in the absence of in situ measurements during the surge.

We investigated the evolution of two major rifts cutting across Mertz Glacier Tongue, East Antarctica, using a combination of satellite images and 60 day sets of GPS data from two stations deployed either side of the western rift in 2007. The eastern rift began to open in the early 1990s, and the western rift initiated in 2002 in conjunction with the collision of a large iceberg with the tongue. Velocity time series derived from the 2007 GPS data exhibited strong variations at tidal periods modulated by sea-surface height and sea-surface slope and reproduced here with a conceptually simple model. We found that opening of the western rift in 2002 leads to a dramatic change in behavior of the tongue as the large range in velocity (700–2400 m a−1) observed in 2000 was largely reduced (1075–1225 m a−1) in 2007. Opening of the western rift decoupled the glacier from the transverse loading on the tongue driven by east–west tidal circulation. This loading previously induced time-varying lateral drag, which caused the large velocity range. Our results suggest changes in the mechanical behavior of an ice tongue impact the dynamics of the outlet glacier system and should be considered in longer-term mass-balance evaluations.

In this study we compare the anisotropic flow relations for polycrystalline ice of Azuma and Goto-Azuma (1996), Thorsteinsson (2002), Placidi and others (2010) and Budd and others (2013). Observations from the Dome Summit South (DSS) ice-coring site at Law Dome, East Antarctica, are used to model the vertical distribution of deviatoric stress components at the borehole site. The flow relations in which the anisotropic rheology is parameterized by a scalar function, so that the strain-rate and deviatoric stress tensor components are collinear, provide simple shear and vertical compression deviatoric stress profiles that are most consistent with laboratory observations of tertiary creep in combined stress configurations. Those flow relations where (1) the anisotropy is derived from the magnitude of applied stresses resolved onto the basal planes of individual grains and (2) the macroscopic deformation is obtained via homogenization of individual grain responses provide stress estimates less consistent with laboratory observations. This is most evident in combined simple shear and vertical compression flow regimes where shear is dominant. Our results highlight the difficulties associated with developing flow relations which incorporate a physically based description of microdeformation processes. In particular, this requires that all relevant microdeformation, recrystallization and recovery processes are adequately parameterized.

Two practical problems in the use of time-lapse photography for the measurement of speed were encountered during the recent surge of West Fork Glacier in the central Alaska Range, Alaska, U.S.A. The first is severe rotational camera instability; we show how natural, unsurveyed features on the valley wall can be used to make the necessary corrections. The second problem is the computation of absolute speed when many different, unsurveyed glacier-surface features are used as targets. We give a method for connecting the data obtained from different targets, and for determining the scale using limited information obtained by surveying. Severe systematic errors can occur unless the angle between the axis of the lens and the direction of horizontal motion is determined.

Although quantitative interpretation of the low-frequency electrical conductivity of ice cores from central Greenland is complicated by temperature variations of the measured core, annual layers can be recognized in sections of the core that are not impacted by non-seasonal features. Ambiguities in counting of annual layers can be minimized by comparing the electrical conductivity measurements to measurements of dust concentration and visual stratigraphy. A non-linear relationship between applied voltage and the current measured across two electrodes complicates the quantitative comparison of measurements made with different equipment, but does not affect the overall shape of the observed features.

An air-photograph inventory of the present glacierization of areas of east Baffin Island adjoining Home Bay and Okoa Bay is described. Ice fields characterize the broad mountain summits of the former while the latter is an area of cirque glaciers. The extent of glacierization is statistically related to various topographic parameters. It is found that there is a 4: 1 ratio between Home Bay and Okoa Bay in the area of ice as a percent of the land area above 600 m a.s.l. Trend-surface analyses are made of the distribution of snow-banks and of cirques (empty and with ice bodies) in the two areas. The orientation of the cirques and of the ice-field glaciers in Home Bay is also examined. 39% of empty cirques in Okoa Bay face south, whereas those with existing glaciers are restricted to orientations with azimuths between 310°-145°. Neither glacier length nor the observable recession in the Home Bay area show any significant difference with regard to; aspect.

Consideration of climatic parameters (snowfall and degree days) and synoptic-climatological results provide no reason for the strong contrast between the two areas. Cool, cloudy summer conditions are associated with easterly flow components that should affect both areas. A possible model for the inception of the mountain ice fields of Home Bay c. 2000-4000 years ago is outlined and it is suggested that differential lag effects between the ice bodies in the two areas may be responsible for some of the observed difference. The many paradoxical relationships between glacierization. topography and climate in these areas, and the rather negative results, emphasize the dangers of facile palaeoclimatic interpretations.
