The characteristics and probable development of dirt cones on Vatnajökull (Iceland) are described. Thick accumulations of debris protect the ice beneath them from ablation, whereas thin ones accelerate the process. Under given conditions of ablation, the nature of the debris covering is the deciding factor—in particular its radiation absorption coefficient, conductivity and thickness. Contrasts are noted between the dirt cones of Vatnajökull and those of other glaciers. The nature of the debris and of the ablation varies greatly from place to place, but all dirt cones result from differential ablation.

Relationships between snow structure, climatic factors, and the nature of avalanche events in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, U.S.A., are analyzed. Physical and mechanical properties of the snow cover have been monitored on a continuous basis by conventional methods as well as through the application of a profiling snow-density gauge. Temperature-gradient metamorphism is the dominant mechanism which determines the character of the local snow structure. Properties unique to well-developed temperature-gradient snow (depth hoar) are discussed. Three specific metamorphic processes are described which contribute to a highly varied and mechanically weak snow structure. Analysis of fracture-line profile data allow general studies of the local snow climate to be compared with the stratigraphy of actual release zones. Fracture-line data support the conclusion that meteorological conditions prevailing at the time of new-snow deposition play a less significant role in the eventual release of slab avalanches than metamorphic processes which influence the snow cover between storm periods. Shear failure zones are consistently composed of weak layers metamorphosed weeks and even months prior to the precipitation event which triggers the release.

Three-terminal dielectric bridge measurements (in the range 20 Hz to 100 kHz between — 5°C and —90 to — 120°C) have been made of ice doped with (a) conductivity-enhancing ionic impurities (HCl, HF, NaCl, KF, NH4F) and (b) conductivity-depressing solutes (NH4OH, NH4Cl, NH5CO3, NaHCO3). Blocking electrodes were used for the first group. The true ice parameters were extracted from linearized plots of the Debye equations. Chlorides and fluorides showed very similar characteristics in their spectra and static conductivity. The results suggest that static conductivity is controlled by extrinsic protons. On the other hand, bases, or solutes that impart a positive freezing potential to the ice, suppress extrinsic protons. In this case, the static conductivity was not, or only weakly, temperature dependent and lower than in the first group. A conductivity cross-over was observed in neither case. The dielectric conductivity contribution is strongly dependent on impurity concentration but apparently less affected than the static conductivity by the nature of the solute. The principal relaxation time is reduced by most solutes, exceptions are pure (bicarbonate-free) bases, sodium bicarbonate, and carbon dioxide.

Cryo-Raman tomography allows us, for the first time, to determine accurate morphologies and volumes of natural air hydrates in Antarctic ice cores. The measurements show complex growth structures that are not accounted for by the available models of hydrate formation.

A technique for drilling deep holes with a hot-water jet has been developed in recent years at our institute (Iken and others, [1977]). The holes have served to investigate the water pressure at the bed of various Swiss glaciers since 1973. Drainage occurred naturally in rare cases when the drill reached the bed, but more often it was necessary to use explosives first, probably because the drill was stopped short of the bottom of the glacier by rock inclusions in the ice. In order to record piezometric water pressure over an extended period of time it was necessary that water was draining fairly continuously into the hole, otherwise the water level dropped eventually to a great depth when the weather turned cold, whereupon the holes closed off. By suddenly shutting off the water supply to a hole and observing the lowering of the water level with time some information on the channel characteristics has been obtained. In many cases there was little change of level, indicating that such a hole gives almost the true pressure head of the subglacial drainage system.

Our efforts have so far been concentrated on flat tongues of fair size over 100 m thick, the distance from the uppermost hole to the terminus ranging from about 1 to 4.5 km. The main characteristic of the water pressure is a very large diurnal variation of the order of 100 m and more. The mean pressure generally rises and falls in times of high and low water supply, respectively, but re-adjusts to approximately the original level within a few days. Mean levels are higher early in the melt season than later, and the amplitude of the diurnal variation has a tendency to increase with time, but also shows strong short-term modulations depending on the water supply. From observations on moulins and a hole which had remained connected to the bed from the previous year it seems likely that at the beginning of the melt season the water pressure at the bed may become as large as or larger than the ice pressure.

On Gornergletscher a record of water pressures has been obtained during the drainage of Gornersee, an ice-dammed lake at the confluence of the two main branches of the glacier. Levels stayed high day and night in the piezometer holes, which were located off to the side of where the main drainage channel was suspected to pass through. The surface drainage pattern was affected over a large area of the glacier. These two observations indicate that during the drainage of the lake some sort of sheet flow must have occurred. The surface velocity of the glacier roughly doubled during that time, but no lifting-up of the ice was observed within the accuracy of the survey. On one occasion on Glacier de Breney the main channel must have been blocked temporarily between an upper area, where the water level was rising simultaneously in three piezometer holes, and an area further down-glacier, where the holes were not affected.

Observations and measurements of ogives on Morsárjökull, Svinafellsjökull and Falljökull are given and discussed. The problems associated with the smaller ogives on Svínafellsjökull and the ridges below the ice falls are considered.

The frequency of avalanches at a given location is the primary variable for calculating the risk as input to zoning applications and decisions about avalanche-control options. In this paper, we present an in-depth study of avalanche frequency using an extensive data base of avalanche-occurrence records from Rogers’ Pass, British Columbia (43 avalanche paths; 24 years of records). This study, the first of its kind for high-frequency avalanche paths, yields the result that the frequency of avalanches may be described by a Poisson distribution. Study of the relationship between terrain variables and precipitation estimates shows that avalanche frequency is significantly correlated with path roughness, 30 year maximum water equivalent, east-west location from Rogers’ Pass summit, wind exposure and run-out zone elevation and inclination. With the length of avalanche-occurrence records and quality of the data, we believe our study is the most comprehensive in existence about avalanche frequency and its relation to terrain variables.

In 2003–07 summer balance was measured at altitudes between 1700 and 3382 m a.s.l. on two glaciers on Mount Rainier, Washington State, USA (46.85° N,121.72° W; 4400 m a.s.l.): south-facing Nisqually Glacier and east-northeast-facing Emmons Glacier. Upper-air temperatures at the nearest gridpoint in the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis database are used in a distributed (over altitude) positive-degreeday (PDD) model. For each glacier the model used the same coefficients at all altitudes, for all years. The rms model error was 0.65 (r2 = 0.87) and 0.78 m a−1 w.e. (r2 = 0.93) for Nisqually and Emmons Glaciers, respectively. Although PDD work generally uses different coefficients for snow and ice surfaces, and the duration of exposure of those surfaces varies with altitude, error in this single-coefficient model is nearly uncorrelated with altitude. Values of coefficients obtained are within the range of those found in other PDD work. The degree-day coefficient, however, differs markedly between the two glaciers, and is shown to be controlled by the difference between them in vertical gradient of measured summer balance. It is smaller for Nisqually Glacier, where solar radiation is a stronger contributor to melt; and larger for Emmons Glacier, where it is a weaker contributor. Over 1948–2007, when the model calibrated over 2003–07 was applied to the upper-air temperatures, estimated summer balance was ∼0.4 m a−1 less negative over 1962–83 than before and ∼0.6 m a−1 less negative than after, corresponding roughly with changes of the northeast Pacific sea-surface temperatures.

Energy fluxes and resultant short-term ablation rates were measured at a ground-ice slump on south-west Banks Island. Net radiation, as a proportion of the ablation flux, is greatest on days with high incident solar radiation, whereas on overcast days, sensible- and latent-heat inputs may supply more than half the necessary energy. A multiple regression equation using net radiation and a turbulent-energy term as independent variables explains 79% of the variation in the measured ablation fluxes. Overall, at least 60% of the energy used for ablation at the slump is derived from net radiation.

Mapping the spatial distribution of c-axis orientations in ice thin sections is not much more difficult than preparing c-axis scatter plots but can reveal additional information about processes responsible for the observed fabric and texture of the ice. Distributions of angles between c axes of neighboring grains from the Byrd Station (West Antarctica) ice core suggest that polygonization causes average grain-size to stabilize below 400 m depth.

The extension of the Quaternary glaciations has been studied in the semi-arid Andes of north-central Chile, where the glacial modelling is striking. In the Elqui valley (lat. 30°S.), two glacial advances were identified reaching down to 3 100 m (Laguna glaciation) and 2 500 m (Tapado glaciation). In the Aconcagua valley (lat. 33°S.), moraines from three major glacial advances were found, at 2 800 m (Portillo glaciation), 1 600 m (Guardia Vieja glaciation) and 1 300 m (Salto del Soldado glaciation).

The Quaternary glaciations were linked with a decrease of temperature, but more significantly with a marked increase of precipitation probably related to an equatorward shift of 5–6 degrees of the austral polar front. The results obtained in the semi-arid Chilean Andes are correlated with those recently reported from other sectors of the southern Andes.

Two previous theoretical analyses of data from the GRIP, Vostok and Byrd ice cores, presenting age–depth correlations, grain growth and dislocation-density evolution, are re-examined. It is found that the age–depth correlations are inconsistent with the idealized flow with unchanging history adopted, but that good correlations can be obtained by relaxing those restrictions. A modified grain-growth relation is proposed, consistent with the distinct growth profiles of the Vostok and other two cores, which can be solved simultaneously with the given dislocation-density evolution equation. These are solved for all three cores with the given parameters, and the depth profiles of grain diameter and dislocation density at the present time are determined with the new age–depth correlation and with that shown empirically in the papers. The varying flow history influences the age–depth correlation, and hence the depth profiles, which is important both for the interpretation of core data, and for the determination of constitutive variables at each depth at the present time.

We have developed a novel ice-penetrating radar system that can be carried on a backpack. Including batteries for a 3 hour continuous measurement, the total weight is 13 kg. In addition, it operates reliably down to –25°C, has a low power consumption of 24 W, and is semi-waterproof. The system has a built-in-one controller with a high-brightness display for reading data quickly, a receiver with 12-bit digitizing, and a 1 kV pulse transmitter in which the pulse amplitude varies by <0.2%. Optical communications between components provides low-noise data acquisition and allows synchronizing of the pulse transmission with sampling. Measurements with the system revealed the 300 m deep bed topography of a temperate valley glacier in the late ablation season.

We have adapted inexpensive ultrasonic rangefinders to measure ablation rates on the surface of a glacier. While ultrasonic rangers are commercially available for this purpose, our goal was to utilize rangefinders typically used in hobby robotics without significantly compromising performance. To correct for environmental factors that affect the speed of sound we use two ultrasonic rangefinders, one focused on a fixed target. Measurements of ablation correlate well with manual measurements with an uncertainty of about ±3 cm, suggesting an accuracy comparable with other non-manual methods of recording ablation. The limitations of our rangefinder include those inherent in commercially available units as well as having less acoustical power, which results in a reduced effective range of the sensor (~2 m) and difficulties in detecting surfaces lying below low-density snow. Our sensor design provides a cost-effective means of increasing the spatial coverage of ice ablation measurements.

The marginal areas of the Greenland ice sheet develop streams and lakes each summer, documenting that surface runoff of meltwater is a major component of ice-sheet mass balance. Here we map the slush limit, a proxy for the extent of surface runoff, using daily MODIS data for the years 2000–2021. We develop an automated algorithm capable of detecting daily slush limits, provided sufficient image quality. The algorithm is applied to the ice sheet's western flank (61.7 $^{\circ }$N to 76.5 $^{\circ }$N). We find significant increasing trends in maximum slush limits until the year 2012, but not thereafter. We show that the slush limit typically rises quickly early in the ablation season but stabilizes before melting ceases. The data provide evidence that upward migration of surface runoff in summer 2012 stopped early at the upper margin of the ice slabs. These thick and continuous ice layers are located close to the surface, in the firn, and impede percolation of melt into deeper pore space. Had the ice slabs extended higher, the summer 2012 provided sufficient energy to raise the slush limit by another $\sim$300 m in elevation.

A preliminary assessment of the daily variation of ice albedo in the 285-2 800 nm range was made using field data collected over snow ice and refrozen slush. Significant diurnal variations could be attributed to changing low solar altitude under clear skies or to decay of the ice surface. Changes in albedo due to changes in cloud cover were observed for the most part to be slight. The measurements provide a base for a program of wider scope which would consider other types of ice under a variety of natural conditions.

Glacier surface albedo dominates glacier energy balance, thus strongly affecting the glacier mass balance. Glaciers in the Western Nyainqentanglha Mountains (WNM) experienced large mass losses in the past two decades, but long-term changes of glacier albedo and its drivers are less understood. In this study, we retrieved glacier albedo with MODIS reflectance data to characterize the spatiotemporal variability of albedo from 2001 to 2020. Air temperature, rainfall, snowfall and deposition of light-absorbing impurities (LAIs) were evaluated as potential drivers of the observed variability in glacier albedo. The results showed that: (1) the glacier albedo experienced large inter-annual fluctuations, with the mean albedo being 0.552 ± 0.002 and a clear decreasing trend of 0.0443 ± 2 × 10−4 dec−1 in the WNM. The fastest decline was observed in autumn and in the vicinity of the equilibrium line altitude, indicating an extended melt season and an expansion of the ablation region to higher elevation; (2) local meteorology and LAIs deposition are the main drivers of glacier albedo change, but their effects on seasonal albedos are different due to different glacier processes. Both air temperature and the balance between liquid and solid precipitation affect summer and autumn albedos due to glacier ablation. Air temperature is the main driver of spring and winter albedos due to sublimation and metamorphism of snow, while snowfall carried by westerlies has limited influence on these two seasonal albedos due to less snowfall. LAIs mainly affect spring albedo due to high concentration coupled with the southerly wind in spring. These findings highlight the significance of changes in glacier albedo and the key role of local meteorology and LAIs deposition in determining such changes, which play an important role in glaciological and cryosphere processes.

Blue Glacier has an area of 4.3 km.2, a volume of 0.57 km.3, a mean density of 0.88 g. cm.−3 and an altitude range of 1,275 to 2,350 m. above sea-level. It is an active temperate glacier in a strongly maritime climate where the net budget gradient varies from 10 mm. m.−1 in the ablation zone to 7 or 8 mm. m.−1 in the accumulation zone. There is a very large snow accumulation each winter and a large snow melt each summer which exceeds by several times the ice melt. The annual mass budget is strongly influenced by altitudes of the freezing level during spring and autumn storms, for these determine whether the heavy precipitation falls as rain or snow. Recent glacier variations are quantitatively consistent with climate trends but there is no clear cause-and-effect relation. Since 1958 the glacier has been gaining mass by an average of 0.4 per cent per year.
