We explore a new method to retrieve seasonal glacier mass balances (MBs) from low-resolution optical remote sensing. We derive annual winter and summer snow maps of the Alps during 1998–2014 using SPOT/VEGETATION 1 km resolution imagery. We combine these seasonal snow maps with a DEM to calculate a ‘mean regional’ altitude of snow (Z) in a region surrounding a glacier. Then, we compare the interannual variation of Z with the observed winter/summer glacier MB for 55 Alpine glaciers over 1998–2008, our calibration period. We find strong linear relationships in winter (mean R2 = 0.84) and small errors for the reconstructed winter MB (mean RMSE = 158 mm (w.e.) a−1). This is lower than errors generally assumed for the glaciological MB measurements (200–400 mm w.e. a−1). Results for summer MB are also satisfying (mean R2 and RMSE, respectively, 0.74 and 314 mm w.e. a−1). Comparison with observed seasonal MB available over 2009–2014 (our evaluation period) for 19 glaciers in winter and 13 in summer shows good agreement in winter (RMSE = 405 mm w.e. a−1) and slightly larger errors in summer (RMSE = 561 mm w.e. a−1). These results indicate that our approach might be valuable for remotely determining the seasonal MB of glaciers over large regions.

Surface and basal long profiles are reconstructed for 13 outlet glaciers that drained ice from a large ice field (80 km by 120 km) that formed in the western Grampians of Scotland during part of the Late-glacial period (c, 14000–10000years BP). Basal shear stresses are calculated at 5 km intervals along the central flowlines of the reconstructed outlet glaciers. Individual basal shear stresses for the outlet glaciers range from 10 to 204 kPa. Variations in calculated basal shear stresses within and between the glaciers are mainly explained by differences in bedrock topography, extending and compressional flow, and by differences in basal boundary conditions. Low basal shear stresses (<53kPa) calculated for the terminal zones of Creran, Menteith and Lomond glaciers are partly explained by the overriding of glaciomarine clays with inferred high pore-water pressures and a low yield strength that may have led to rapid basal sliding and thinning of the ice lobes.

Subglacial hydrology modulates basal motion but remains poorly constrained, particularly for soft-bedded Greenlandic outlet glaciers. Here, we report detailed measurements of the response of subglacial water pressure to the connection and drainage of adjacent water-filled boreholes drilled through kilometre-thick ice on Sermeq Kujalleq (Store Glacier). These measurements provide evidence for gap opening at the ice-sediment interface, Darcian flow through the sediment layer, and the forcing of water pressure in hydraulically-isolated cavities by stress transfer. We observed a small pressure drop followed by a large pressure rise in response to the connection of an adjacent borehole, consistent with the propagation of a flexural wave within the ice and underlying deformable sediment. We interpret the delayed pressure rise as evidence of no pre-existing conduit and the progressive decrease in hydraulic transmissivity as the closure of a narrow (< 1.5 mm) gap opened at the ice-sediment interface, and a reversion to Darcian flow through the sediment layer with a hydraulic conductivity of ≤ 10−6 m s−1. We suggest that gap opening at the ice-sediment interface deserves further attention as it will occur naturally in response to the rapid pressurisation of water at the bed.

Close-range (CR) L-band radiometry and quasi-simultaneous in situ snow characterizations were conducted in May 2019 at the Swiss Camp research site in the ablation zone of the western Greenland ice sheet. Snow liquid-water and its melt/refreeze are retrieved from microwave antenna temperatures measured with the ground-based L-band radiometer ELBARA-III. The emission model (EM) used in the retrieval is a two-layer configuration of the ‘L-Band Specific Microwave Emission Model of Layered Snowpack’. Consistent snow wetness retrievals were achieved from both single- and multi-angle CR observations of L-band antenna temperatures. This suggests that multi-angle observation is not a pre-requisite for snow wetness retrieval. Therefore, in addition to soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS) multi-angle measurements, snow wetness can be estimated from spaceborne L-band brightness temperatures measured at a single observation angle, such as from NASA's SMAP satellite. Our results provide partial validation of a recently presented snow wetness retrieval approach based on the same EM and applied over Greenland using multi-angle SMOS brightness temperatures. Agreement between measured CR antenna temperatures and SMOS brightness temperatures is found to be within the 95% confidence intervals of ELBARA-III and SMOS measurement uncertainties. Our measurements confirm the modeled response of antenna temperatures to diurnal variations of snow wetness.

Turbulent fluxes make a substantial and growing contribution to the energy balance of ice surfaces globally, but are poorly constrained owing to challenges in estimating the aerodynamic roughness length (z0). Here, we used structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) surveys to make plot-scale 2-D and 3-D microtopographic estimations of z0 and upscale these to map z0 across an ablating mountain glacier. At plot scales, we found spatial variability in z0 estimates of over two orders of magnitude with unpredictable z0 trajectories, even when classified into ice surface types. TLS-derived surface roughness exhibited strong relationships with plot-scale SfM z0 estimates. At the glacier scale, a consistent increase in z0 of ~0.1 mm d−1 was observed. Space-for-time substitution based on time since surface ice was exposed by snow melt confirmed this gradual increase in z0 over 60 d. These measurements permit us to propose a scale-dependent temporal z0 evolution model where unpredictable variability at the plot scale gives way to more predictable changes of z0 at the glacier scale. This model provides a critical step towards deriving spatially and temporally distributed representations of z0 that are currently lacking in the parameterisation of distributed glacier surface energy balance models.

Ground-penetrating radar data acquired in the 2016/17 austral summer on Sørsdal Glacier, East Antarctica, provide evidence for meltwater lenses within porous surface ice that are conceptually similar to firn aquifers observed on the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Arctic and Alpine glaciers. These englacial water bodies are associated with a dry relict surface basin and consistent with perennial drainage into an interconnected englacial drainage system, which may explain a large englacial outburst flood observed in satellite imagery in the early 2016/17 melt season. Our observations indicate the rarely-documented presence of an englacial hydrological system in Antarctica, with implications for the storage and routing of surface meltwater. Future work should ascertain the spatial prevalence of such systems around the Antarctic coastline, and identify the degree of surface runoff redistribution and storage in the near surface, to quantify their impact on surface mass balance.

Based on many years of measurements and observations on the frequency and intensity of deposition of various types of rime which have been conducted by the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of Wroclaw University at the top of Szrenica, Sudety mountains, a hundred meters above the tree line, the essential factors influencing this feature have been determined and are discussed. The upper parts of the Sudety mountains belong to the regions with the most frequent and heaviest rime deposits in Europe, which often appears to be hazardous to farming. It has been found that intensity of rime deposition depends clearly on air temperature and wind velocity, and it is related to certain types of weather situations characterized by types of atmospheric circulation delineated by Konček and Rein (1971).

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) trained from high-order ice-flow model realisations have proven to be outstanding emulators in terms of fidelity and computational performance. However, the dependence on an ensemble of realisations of an instructor model renders this strategy difficult to generalise to a variety of ice-flow regimes found in the nature. To overcome this issue, we adopt the approach of physics-informed deep learning, which fuses traditional numerical solutions by finite differences/elements and deep-learning approaches. Here, we train a CNN to minimise the energy associated with high-order ice-flow equations within the time iterations of a glacier evolution model. As a result, our emulator is a promising alternative to traditional solvers thanks to its high computational efficiency (especially on GPU), its high fidelity to the original model, its simplified training (without requiring any data), its capability to handle a variety of ice-flow regimes and memorise previous solutions, and its relatively simple implementation. Embedded into the ‘Instructed Glacier Model’ (IGM) framework, the potential of the emulator is illustrated with three applications including a large-scale high-resolution (2400x4000) forward glacier evolution model, an inverse modelling case for data assimilation, and an ice shelf.

A laboratory experiment was conducted in which new ice crystals were nucleated from the vapor phase onto large existing ice crystals obtained from Antarctic lake ice. Flat, smooth ice-crystal surfaces were prepared, with c axes oriented either vertically or horizontally. When these were subjected to a supersaturated vapor environment, multiple individual crystals nucleated onto the substrates adopting the same crystallographic orientation as the parent. A dominant grain-growth scenario for kinetic-growth metamorphism in snow, which in some ways is analogous to the oriented morphologies in lake ice, is hypothesized. In the lake-ice-growth scenario, optimally oriented crystals will grow at the expense of those less preferentially positioned.The proposed dominant grain-growth theory for snow is in agreement with the observed decrease in the number of grains and the proximal similarity of crystal habit in kinetic-growth metamorphism in snow. Similarly, kinetic crystal growth on the interior of gas inclusions in Antarctic lake ice will also acquire the crystallographic orientation of the substrate ice. These small-faceted interior crystals significantly influence light scattering and penetration in the lake-ice cover.

The mass balance is computed along the Ohio State University (OSU) transect near the Arctic Circle and along the Expédition Glaciologique Internationale au Groenland (EGIG) line. Measured surface velocities are compared with velocities calculated from up-glacial accumulation rate, flow-line spreading, ice thickness, and the depth variation in horizontal velocity. The depth variation in velocity is calculated using the constitutive relation for ice, calculated temperatures within the glacier, computed shear and longitudinal stresses, and allowance for impurity content and ice-crystal orientation. The resulting mass balance is +0.6 ± 0.14 m a−1 for the OSU transect and 0 ± 0.07 m a−1 along the EGIG line. The errors arise mainly from uncertainties in measured accumulation rate and flow-line spreading, and perhaps in flow-enhancement factors due to ice anisotropy or impurities. The results for the EGIG line differ from prior estimates mainly because earlier works placed greater emphasis on short-term accumulation rates.

The stable isotopes oxygen-18 and deuterium in snow samples collected in four mountain regions (the South American Andes, the Central Asian Hindu Kush, the Himalaya, and Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro in Africa) have been measured. The altitude effect in fresh snow precipitation and in the snow-pack was determined for δ180 as being within the range —0.6‰ to about — 1.0‰ per 100 m of elevation, but this can be altered or even inverted by secondary factors. These factors are connected with conditions of snow-fall and post-depositional changes in the snow, which are strongly dependent on the topography of the sampled mountain slope and on climatic conditions. All these effects are discussed.

Spatio-temporal variability of the winter surface mass balance is a major uncertainty in the modelling of annual surface mass balance. Moreover, its measurement at high spatio-temporal resolution (sub-200 m) is very useful to force, calibrate or validate models. This study presents the results of year-round field campaigns to study the evolution of the surface mass balance in a ~2 km2 portion of the accumulation zone of the Mer de Glace (France). It is based on repeated LiDAR acquisitions, submergence-velocity measurements and meteorological records. The two methods used to quantify submergence velocities show good agreement. They present a linear temporal evolution without significant seasonal changes but display significant spatial variability. We conclude that a dense network of submergence velocity measurements is required to reduce the uncertainties when computing winter and annual surface mass balance from digital elevation model differencing. Finally, a hight spatio-temporal variability of the winter surface mass balance is highlighted (e.g., a std dev. of 0.92 m in April) even though the topography is homogeneous (std dev. of 25 m). Attempts to relate this variability to different morpho-topographic variables and wind-related indexes show the need for studies conducted at the snowfall event scale to obtain a better understanding of the variability in mass balance at the glacier scale.

We present some new results describing energy exchange processes of drifting sea ice in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in the Barents Sea, Arctic Ocean. All measurements and observations of meteorological parameters and ice conditions were taken on board the Norwegian research vessel Lance from 3 to 22 May 1999. Components of surface heat balance were measured and correlated with ice conditions and synoptic observations. These results can be used in atmospheric boundary layer modelling as lower boundary conditions. A relationship was found between modelled turbulent heat fluxes and observed sea-ice concentrations.

Numerical models to assess the principal response of large ice caps to climatic changes are used as a guide to the interpretation of field evidence of changes in the glaciological regime in the coastal areas of Victoria Land and north Victoria Land, Antarctica. Based on the theoretical work, the following scenario is proposed: areas within about 300 km from the coast of Victoria Land experienced (i) significantly shallower ice slopes and a lesser degree of glaciation during most of the late Tertiary, (ii) steep slopes and thicker ice than today during glacial stages, and (iii) moderate thinning of the ice in intervening interglacial stages.

The model predicts, for central regions of Antarctica, a slightly thinner ice cap (lower snow-accumulation rate) during glacial stages, but an estimated 200 m thicker ice cap in warmer Tertiary climates than today. The calculated “Tertiary ice caps” indicate a probable tendency of periodic surges due to basal melting at the outer fringes.

Only modest changes of the ice thickness in reasonably good agreement with the model predictions for the current interglacial stage have been observed on four blue-ice fields, all located within 250 km of the coastline. Investigated ice fields include two meteorite traps — the Allan Hills Icefield and the Frontier Mountain meteorite fields. Antarctic meteorite traps are sustained by very specific glaciological conditions — in particular, only moderate changes in ice thickness over time. The sub-ice topography of these fields was determined by radar measurements and reveals a former, very different glaciological regime, which is interpreted as being associated with glacial processes, operative during the late Tertiary.

Field evidence for a hypsithermal event during the Holocene is presented.

The daily snow melt calculated from meteorological observations is compared with detailed mass-balance measurements taking into account internal changes in density and free water content in the surface layers of a glacier snow-pack. The energy balance is calculated from measurements obtained by a meteorological station at the experimental site. In addition to the standard ablation measurements the run-off from the melting snow-pack was obtained for a few days. The snow-density profiles were measured with a portable gamma-transmission probe and the liquid-water content of snow was determined by a calorimetric method.

Agreement between the melt calculated by the heat-balance method and the mass changes observed in the mass-balance measurements is fair for daily periods. It appears that about 20% of the daily snow melt takes place internally as a result of penetration of solar radiation.

The full history of ice sheet and climate interactions is recorded in the vertical profiles of geochemical tracers in polar ice sheets. Numerical simulations of these archives promise great advances both in the interpretation of these reconstructions and the validation of the models themselves. However, fundamental mathematical shortcomings of existing models subject tracers to spurious diffusion, thwarting straightforward solutions. Here, I propose a new vertical discretization for ice-sheet models that eliminates numerical diffusion entirely. Vertical motion through the model mesh is avoided by mimicking the real-world flow of ice as a thinning of underlying layers. A new layer is added to the surface at equidistant time intervals, isochronally, thus identifying each layer uniquely by its time of deposition and age. This new approach is implemented for a two-dimensional section through the summit of the Greenland ice sheet. The ability to directly compare simulations of vertical ice cores with reconstructed data is used to find optimal model parameters from a large ensemble of simulations. It is shown that because this tuning method uses information from all times included in the ice core, it constrains ice-sheet sensitivity more robustly than a realistic reproduction of the modern ice-sheet surface.

A thin-blade snow hardness gauge was developed that measures penetration resistance over a length scale (on the order of 10–100 grain contacts) relevant to the fracture of slab avalanches. A thin blade was chosen to measure the ruptures of bonds and grain structures and minimize the effects of snow compaction during penetration. The apparatus consists of a 10 cm wide, 0.6 mm thick stainless-steel blade attached to a digital push–pull gauge. Blade penetration measurements are easy to conduct in the field and laboratory and required no post-processing or subjective interpretation. Measurements were conducted in snow pits to test the effects of penetration rate, blade orientation and blade width. The blade hardness index, defined as the maximum force of penetration, is a highly repeatable measure across observers compared to the hand hardness test. The blade hardness index was a better variable than the density for correlating with tensile strength measurements in a cold laboratory and with a cohesive strength measure in the field. As strength is one of the most important parameters in the fracture mechanics of slab avalanches, the strong correlation between thin-blade penetration and strength should benefit future slope stability evaluations using this gauge.

We present measurements with inclinometer/magnetometer probes inserted in glacier ice, and discuss the underlying mathematical theory to extract velocity-gradient components from these data. Assumptions concerning the ice flow field must be made to reduce the number of unknowns and to close the system of equations obtained from the theory. With the incompressibility assumption and the first-order plane-strain approximation, the evolution equation for the tilt of the main sensor axis can be solved exactly and the obtained function can be fitted to measured data to obtain optimal shear and normal strain components. Daily variations superposed on the tilt evolution reflect variations in sliding and perhaps partial elastic recovery of deformations.

Snow glide is the translational slip of the entire snowpack over a sloping ground surface, and it is thought that rapid rates of snow glide precede full-depth avalanches. The nature of avalanches that release at the ground makes them difficult to predict and difficult to control using explosives.

On-slope instrumentation comprised of stainless-steel "glide shoes" was used to measure rates of snow glide for two winters on a bedrock slope adjacent to the Coquihalla Highway, Cascade Mountains, British Columbia, Canada. Climate data and avalanche occurrences were recorded by the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Highways.

Our results show that the supply of free water to the snow/ground interface by rain or snowmelt is the most important influence on full-depth avalanche release. Full-depth avalanche release responds to rainfall and snowmelt events within 12-24 hours. Occasionally, full-depth avalanches occur unexpectedly during clear, cold periods. Snowmelt by radiation is thought to contribute enough meltwater during these cold periods to induce higher rates of snow glide and full-depth avalanche release. The results also indicate that snow glide alone is not a reliable indicator for full-depth avalanche release.

Investigations of the time-dependent behavior of marine ice sheets and their sensitivity to basal conditions require numerical models because existing theoretical analyses focus only on steady-state configurations primarily with a power-law basal shear stress. Numerical results indicate that the choice of the sliding law strongly affects ice-sheet dynamic behavior. Although observed or simulated grounding-line retreat is typically interpreted as an indication of marine ice sheet instability introduced by Weertman (1974), this (in)stability is a characteristic of the ice sheet's steady states – not time-variant behavior. To bridge the gap between theoretical and numerical results, we develop a framework to investigate grounding line dynamics with generalized basal and lateral stresses (i.e. the functional dependencies are not specified). Motivated by observations of internal variability of the Southern Ocean conditions we explore the grounding-line response to stochastic variability. We find that adding stochastic variability to submarine melt rates that produced stable steady-state configurations leads to intermittently advancing and retreating grounding lines. They can also retreat in an unstoppable manner on time-scales significantly longer than the stochastic correlation time-scales. These results suggest that at any given time of their evolution, the transient behavior of marine ice sheets cannot be described in terms of ‘stable’ or ‘unstable’.
