The role of the Lagrangian mean flow, or drift, in modulating the geometry, kinematics and dynamics of rotational and irrotational deep-water surface gravity waves is examined. A general theory for permanent progressive waves on an arbitrary vertically sheared steady Lagrangian mean flow is derived in the Lagrangian reference frame and mapped to the Eulerian frame. A Lagrangian viewpoint offers tremendous flexibility due to the particle labelling freedom and allows us to reveal how key physical wave behaviour arises from a kinematic constraint on the vorticity of the fluid, inter alia the nonlinear correction to the phase speed of irrotational finite amplitude waves, the free surface geometry and velocity in the Eulerian frame, and the connection between the Lagrangian drift and the Benjamin–Feir instability. To complement and illustrate our theory, a small laboratory experiment demonstrates how a specially tailored sheared mean flow can almost completely attenuate the Benjamin–Feir instability, in qualitative agreement with the theory. The application of these results to problems in remote sensing and ocean wave modelling is discussed. We provide an answer to a long-standing question: remote sensing techniques based on observing current-induced shifts in the wave dispersion will measure the Lagrangian, not the Eulerian, mean current.

We perform direct numerical simulations of a gas bubble dissolving in a surrounding liquid. The bubble volume is reduced due to dissolution of the gas, with the numerical implementation of an immersed boundary method, coupling the gas diffusion and the Navier–Stokes equations. The methods are validated against planar and spherical geometries’ analytical moving boundary problems, including the classic Epstein–Plesset problem. Considering a bubble rising in a quiescent liquid, we show that the mass transfer coefficient $k_L$ can be described by the classic Levich formula $k_L = (2/\sqrt {{\rm \pi} })\sqrt {\mathscr {D}_l\,U(t)/d(t)}$, with $d(t)$ and $U(t)$ the time-varying bubble size and rise velocity, and $\mathscr {D}_l$ the gas diffusivity in the liquid. Next, we investigate the dissolution and gas transfer of a bubble in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence flow, extending Farsoiya et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 920, 2021, A34). We show that with a bubble size initially within the turbulent inertial subrange, the mass transfer coefficient in turbulence $k_L$ is controlled by the smallest scales of the flow, the Kolmogorov $\eta$ and Batchelor $\eta _B$ microscales, and is independent of the bubble size. This leads to the non-dimensional transfer rate ${Sh}=k_L L^\star /\mathscr {D}_l$ scaling as ${Sh}/{Sc}^{1/2} \propto {Re}^{3/4}$, where ${Re}$ is the macroscale Reynolds number ${Re} = u_{rms}L^\star /\nu _l$, with $u_{rms}$ the velocity fluctuations, $L^*$ the integral length scale, $\nu _l$ the liquid viscosity, and ${Sc}=\nu _l/\mathscr {D}_l$ the Schmidt number. This scaling can be expressed in terms of the turbulence dissipation rate $\epsilon$ as ${k_L}\propto {Sc}^{-1/2} (\epsilon \nu _l)^{1/4}$, in agreement with the model proposed by Lamont & Scott (AIChE J., vol. 16, issue 4, 1970, pp. 513–519) and corresponding to the high $Re$ regime from Theofanous et al. (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 19, issue 6, 1976, pp. 613–624).

The role played by patterned heating in reducing pressure losses within vertical conduits is investigated. The heating generates flow separation structures which reduce the direct contact between the stream and the sidewalls, thereby limiting the frictional resistance. This also modifies the temperature field thereby inducing a net buoyancy force which may either assist or oppose the pressure gradient required to maintain a fixed flow rate. If the flow Reynolds number is increased sufficiently, the separation structures may be washed away, which means that the pressure-gradient-reducing mechanism is eliminated. The details of the system response are a function of the form of spatial heating distribution, its intensity, the flow Reynolds number and the fluid Prandtl number. Carefully chosen heating of the two walls can induce a pattern interaction effect and a judicious choice of the two patterns can have as much as an order of magnitude effect on the system response.

Buoyant material such as microplastics accumulate near the ocean surface in regions with convergent surface currents where they can be harmful to marine life. Here, we use large eddy simulations to investigate the transport and accumulation of buoyant material in a turbulent ocean mixed layer under combined wind and convection forcing. We model non-inertial buoyant particles with a combination of buoyant tracers and Lagrangian surface particles, which allows us to explore a wide range of particle buoyancies. Surface cooling drives convection, and under this regime persistent convective vortices form that trap buoyant particles, leading to large concentrations. Despite their small size, the convective vortices exhibit a bias towards cyclonic vorticity that has not been reported previously. Based on an analysis of Lagrangian trajectories, the average time that a particle spends inside a convective vortex is long enough for planetary vorticity to become important and further vortex stretching causes an exponential increase in vorticity. When wind forcing is included, there is a transition from convective cells to longitudinal wind rolls with three distinct flow patterns observed under weak, moderate and strong wind forcing. For sufficiently weak winds, convective vortices survive but are less effective at trapping buoyant material. Under strong wind forcing, convective vortices no longer exist, but some clustering occurs in regions of high speed associated with longitudinal wind rolls. We quantify the degree of clustering using the Gini coefficient and find that clustering is strongly influenced by the relative size of the friction and convective velocities and the particle buoyancy.

Fundamental properties of the multicomponent diffuse-interface model (DIM), such as the maximum entropy principle and conservation laws, are used to explore the basic interfacial dynamics and phase transitions in fluids. Flat interfaces with monotonically changing densities of the components are proved to be stable. A liquid layer in contact with oversaturated but stable vapour is shown to either fully evaporate or eternally expand (depending on the initial perturbation), whereas a liquid in contact with saturated vapour always evaporates. If vapour is bounded by a solid wall with a sufficiently large contact angle, spontaneous condensation occurs in the vapour. The external parameters of the multicomponent DIM – e.g. the Korteweg matrix describing the long-range intermolecular forces – are determined for the water/air combination. The Soret and Dufour effects are shown to be negligible in this case, and the interfacial flow, close to isothermal.

We compute the full set of second-order inertial corrections to the instantaneous force and torque acting on a small spherical rigid particle moving unsteadily in a general steady linear flow. This is achieved by using matched asymptotic expansions and formulating the problem in a coordinate system co-moving with the background flow. Effects of unsteadiness and fluid-velocity gradients are assumed to be small, but to dominate in the far field over those of the velocity difference between the body and fluid, making the results essentially relevant to weakly positively or negatively buoyant particles. The outer solution (which at first order is responsible for the Basset–Boussinesq history force at short time and for shear-induced forces such as the Saffman lift force at long time) is expressed via a flow-dependent tensorial kernel. The second-order inner solution brings a number of different contributions to the force and torque. Some are proportional to the relative translational or angular acceleration between the particle and fluid, while others take the form of products of the rotation/strain rate of the background flow and the relative translational or angular velocity between the particle and fluid. Adding the outer and inner contributions, the known added-mass force or the spin-induced lift force are recovered, and new effects involving the velocity gradients of the background flow are revealed. The resulting force and torque equations provide a rational extension of the classical Basset–Boussinesq–Oseen equation incorporating all first- and second-order fluid inertia effects resulting from both unsteadiness and velocity gradients of the carrying flow.

Convection occurs ubiquitously on and in rotating geophysical and astrophysical bodies. Prior spherical shell studies have shown that the convection dynamics in polar regions can differ significantly from the lower latitude, equatorial dynamics. Yet most spherical shell convective scaling laws use globally-averaged quantities that erase latitudinal differences in the physics. Here we quantify those latitudinal differences by analysing spherical shell simulations in terms of their regionalized convective heat-transfer properties. This is done by measuring local Nusselt numbers in two specific, latitudinally separate, portions of the shell, the polar and the equatorial regions, $Nu_p$ and $Nu_e$, respectively. In rotating spherical shells, convection first sets in outside the tangent cylinder such that equatorial heat transfer dominates at small and moderate supercriticalities. We show that the buoyancy forcing, parameterized by the Rayleigh number $Ra$, must exceed the critical equatorial forcing by a factor of ${\approx }20$ to trigger polar convection within the tangent cylinder. Once triggered, $Nu_p$ increases with $Ra$ much faster than does $Nu_e$. The equatorial and polar heat fluxes then tend to become comparable at sufficiently high $Ra$. Comparisons between the polar convection data and Cartesian numerical simulations reveal quantitative agreement between the two geometries in terms of heat transfer and averaged bulk temperature gradient. This agreement indicates that rotating spherical shell convection dynamics is accessible both through spherical simulations and via reduced investigatory pathways, be they theoretical, numerical or experimental.

A framework for the budget of Reynolds stress, temperature and density variations, turbulent mass flux and turbulent heat flux is presented for buoyancy-generated turbulent flows with a focus on turbulent plumes. The dynamical interactions between the turbulence generated from the velocity and thermodynamic fluctuations in thermal and heated gas plumes is studied. A large-eddy simulation tool has been used to simulate heavier and lighter than air plumes released from a circular heated source for high Reynolds number (Re). The budget equations are developed using a Favre-averaging approach. Both heated air plumes and heated gas plumes, namely, heated ${\rm SO}_2$ and heated ${\rm CH}_4$ plumes, are included in the study. The study focuses on addressing key questions – does the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) spectrum follow the classical inertial $-5/3$ spectrum or is there a $-3$ buoyancy regime with a different scaling law? Fundamental pathways for generation of turbulence through velocity fluctuations, and temperature and density fluctuations are discussed. Analysis of the TKE and scalar variance budget equations has demonstrated that multiple mechanisms dominate the transport of Reynolds stresses, and in particular that correlations between the density and the velocity dominates the turbulence production mechanisms. Entrainment is connected to the turbulent transport and pressure-dilation processes.

Classical theories for suspensions have been formulated by starting from the Navier–Stokes equations describing pure liquid flow and then introducing additional dependencies to account for the presence of suspended particles. These models are often accurate for low particle concentrations but have lacked a convincing description of the frictional interactions of particles, which are important at larger solid volume fractions. The $\mu (J), \varPhi (J)$ rheology, which draws a direct analogy between suspension flow and dry granular flow, is a recent theory that addresses this issue, but is shown here to be dynamically ill-posed for large solid volume fractions. An alternative well-posed theory is introduced that includes additional dependence on the particle-phase dilation and compression. The new theory, denoted vCIDR, is tested numerically to show grid convergence for problems in which the $\mu (J), \varPhi (J)$ rheology instead suffers from catastrophic blow-up. A further well-posed extension provides a framework for handling the transition between viscous and inertial flows.

Understanding the statistics of bedload particle motions is of great importance. To model the hop events which are defined as trajectories of particles moving successively from the start to the end of their motions, recently, Wu et al. (Water Resour. Res., vol. 56, 2020, p. e2019WR025116) have successfully performed individual-based simulations according to the Fokker–Planck equation for particle velocities. However, analytical solutions are still not available due to (i) difficulties in treating the velocity-dependent diffusivity, and (ii) a knowledge gap in incorporating the termination of particle motions for the equation. To tackle the above-mentioned challenges, we first specify a Robin boundary condition representing the deposition of particles. Second, for analytical solutions of hop statistics, a variable transformation is devised to deal with the velocity-dependent diffusivity. The original bedload transport problem is thus found to be governed by the classic equation for the solute transport in tube flows with a constant diffusivity after the transformation. Finally, through solving the spatial and temporal moments of the governing equation, we investigate the influence of the deposition rate on three key characteristics of particle hops. Importantly, we have related the deposition rate to the mean travel times and hop distances, enabling a direct determination of this physical parameter based on measured particle motion statistics. The analytical solutions are validated by experimental observations with different bedload particle diameters and transport conditions. Based on the limited experimental datasets, the deposition frequency is shown to decrease as the shear stress increases when the flow rate is not small.

We consider the propagation of inviscid bubbles in a Hele-Shaw cell under a uniform background flow. We focus on the distinguished limit in which the hydrodynamic pressure gradient due to the external flow balances viscous drag effects due to thin liquid films between the bubbles and the cell walls (Bretherton, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 10, issue 2, 1961, pp. 166–188), with the ratio between these two effects measured by a single dimensionless parameter that we label $\delta$. In this regime, we find that each bubble remains approximately circular, and its propagation velocity is determined by a net force balance. The analytical solution for the problem of an isolated bubble in an infinite Hele-Shaw cell is found to agree well with experimental data in the literature. In particular, we find that the bubble may move faster or slower than the background fluid speed, depending on whether $\delta >1$ or $\delta <1$, or precisely with the background flow if $\delta =1$. When the model is generalised to include the effects of multiple bubbles and boundaries in the Hele-Shaw cell, we still find that the sign of $\delta -1$ causes striking changes in the qualitative behaviour. For a train of three or more bubbles moving along a Hele-Shaw channel, we observe longitudinal waves that propagate forwards or backwards along the bubble train, depending on whether $\delta >1$ or $\delta <1$, resembling a Hele-Shaw Newton's cradle.

We study how channel width variations influence the dynamics of free-surface granular flows. For this purpose, we extend a continuum model framework to granular flows passing through channels that narrow or widen. Our theory uses a linearized approximation to an established dense granular flow rheology and a Coulomb friction law to model interaction between flow and sidewalls. We test the theoretical predictions using two novel 40 cm-diameter drums (convex and concave) filled halfway with 2 mm diameter particles rotated at rates in which the shear layer remains shallow and dense. We apply particle tracking velocimetry to enable quantitative comparisons between experimental data and theoretical predictions. We find that our experimental kinematics and energy profiles largely agree with the theoretical predictions. In general, flows through narrowing channels are faster and deeper than flows through widening channels. The influence of width variations grows with increasing flow speed, and the form of the rate dependence changes fundamentally as the regime changes from one in which kinetic energy is dissipated locally to one in which it is advected downstream. For both regimes, theoretical scaling analysis leads us to experimentally validated power laws, in which the exponent depends on the flow regime, and the multiplicative coefficient depends on channel geometry alone. Finally, we discuss how the differences between theoretical predictions and experimental data may be useful for improving our understanding of flows through non-uniform channels.

Using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, we examine the transfer of soluble material from small, spherical particles sinking in homogeneous turbulence at large Péclet number. A theoretical analysis predicts two distinct mechanisms of convective mass transfer: strain due to turbulence and slip due to gravitational settling. Their relative strength is parametrised by the sinking ratio, ${Sr} = w_0 \tau _\eta /a$, where $w_0$ is the quiescent settling velocity, $a$ is the particle radius and $\tau _\eta$ is the Kolmogorov time scale. This analysis predicts that the topology of the concentration wake changes from a symmetric topology at ${Sr} \ll 1$ to an asymmetric topology at ${Sr} \gg 1$ as the dominant mechanism of mass transfer changes. Particle tracking flow visualisations of small spheres releasing dye in turbulence confirm the existence of this change in mechanism at ${Sr} = O(1)$. We complement these experiments with numerical simulations of the mass transfer from sinking particles. The transfer rate predicted by the simulation is found to be in good agreement with literature data for mass transfer to turbulent suspensions of solid particles and is consistent with asymptotic expressions for mass transfer in uniform flow when ${Sr} \gg 1$. A decomposition of the convective fluxes confirms the transition in the transfer mechanism. At ${Sr} = O(1)$, both mechanisms provide comparable contributions to the transfer rate. Cross-correlation analysis reveals that particle-scale knowledge of both the recent strain and velocity history is required to predict the instantaneous transfer rate. Turbulence-induced particle rotation has a modest suppression effect upon convective transfer by sinking.

Conduits generated by the buoyant dynamics between two miscible Stokes fluids with high viscosity contrast, a type of core–annular flow, exhibit a rich nonlinear wave dynamics. However, little is known about the fundamental wave dispersion properties of the medium. In the present work, a pump is used to inject a time-periodic flow that results in the excitation of propagating small- and large-amplitude periodic travelling waves along the conduit interface. This wavemaker problem is used as a means to measure the linear and nonlinear dispersion relations and corresponding periodic travelling wave profiles. Measurements are favourably compared with predictions from a fully nonlinear, long-wave model (the conduit equation) and the analytically computed linear dispersion relation for two-Stokes flow. A critical frequency is observed, marking the threshold between propagating and non-propagating (spatially decaying) waves. Measurements of wave profiles and the wavenumber–frequency dispersion relation quantitatively agree with wave solutions of the conduit equation. An upshift from the conduit equation's predicted critical frequency is observed and is explained by incorporating a weak recirculating flow into the full two-Stokes flow model. When the boundary condition corresponds to the temporal profile of a nonlinear periodic travelling wave solution of the conduit equation, weakly nonlinear and strongly nonlinear, cnoidal-type waves are observed that quantitatively agree with the conduit nonlinear dispersion relation and wave profiles. This wavemaker problem is an important precursor to the experimental investigation of more general boundary value problems in viscous fluid conduit nonlinear wave dynamics.

In Rayleigh–Bénard convection, it has been found that the amount of heat passing through the fluid has a power-law dependence on the imposed temperature difference. Modifying this dependence, either enhancing or reducing the heat transfer capability of fluids, is important in many scientific and practical applications. Here, we present a simple means to control the vertical heat transfer in Rayleigh–Bénard convection by injecting heat through one lateral side of the fluid domain and extracting the same amount of heat from the opposite side. This horizontal heat flux regulates the large-scale circulation, and increases the heat transfer rate in the vertical direction. Our numerical and theoretical studies demonstrate how a classical Rayleigh–Bénard convection responds to such a perturbation when the system is near or well above the onset of convection.

Propagation of fluid-filled fractures by fluid buoyancy is important in a variety of settings, from magmatic dykes and veins to water-filled crevasses in glaciers. Industrial hydro-fracturing utilises fluid-driven fractures to increase the permeability of rock formations, but few studies have quantified the effect of buoyancy on fracture pathways in this context. Analytical approximations for the buoyant ascent rate facilitate observation-based inference of buoyant effects in natural and engineered systems. Such analysis exists for two-dimensional fractures, but real fractures are three-dimensional (3-D). Here we present novel analysis to predict the buoyant ascent speed of 3-D fractures containing a fixed-volume batch of fluid. We provide two estimates of the ascent rate: an upper limit applicable at early time, and an asymptotic estimate (proportional to $t^{-2/3}$) describing how the speed decays at late time. We infer and verify these predictions by comparison with numerical experiments across a range of scales and analogue experiments on liquid oil in solid gelatine. We find the ascent speed is a function of the fluid volume, density, viscosity and the elastic parameters of the host medium. Our approximate solutions predict the ascent rate of fluid-driven fractures across a broad parameter space, including cases of water injection in shale and magmatic dykes. Our results demonstrate that in the absence of barriers or fluid loss, both dykes and industrial hydro-fractures can ascend by buoyancy over a kilometre within a day. We infer that barriers and fluid loss must cause the arrest of ascending fractures in industrial settings.

Screech tones in supersonic jets are underpinned by resonance between downstream-travelling Kelvin–Helmholtz waves and upstream-travelling acoustic waves. Specifically, recent works suggest that the relevant acoustic waves are guided within the jet and are described by a discrete mode of the linearised Euler equations. However, the reflection mechanism that converts downstream-travelling waves into upstream-travelling waves, and vice versa, has not been thoroughly addressed, leading to missing physics within most resonance models. In this work, we investigate the reflection and transmission of waves generated by the interaction between a Kelvin–Helmholtz wave and a normal shock in an under-expanded jet using a mode-matching approach. Both vortex-sheet and finite-thickness shear-layer models are explored, quantifying the impact of the shear layer in the reflection process. This approach could enable more quantitative predictions of resonance phenomena in jets and other fluid systems.

Data-driven dimensionality reduction methods such as proper orthogonal decomposition and dynamic mode decomposition have proven to be useful for exploring complex phenomena within fluid dynamics and beyond. A well-known challenge for these techniques is posed by the continuous symmetries, e.g. translations and rotations, of the system under consideration, as drifts in the data dominate the modal expansions without providing an insight into the dynamics of the problem. In the present study, we address this issue for fluid flows in rectangular channels by formulating a continuous symmetry reduction method that eliminates the translations in the streamwise and spanwise directions simultaneously. We demonstrate our method by computing the symmetry-reduced dynamic mode decomposition (SRDMD) of sliding windows of data obtained from the transitional plane-Couette and turbulent plane-Poiseuille flow simulations. In the former setting, SRDMD captures the dynamics in the vicinity of the invariant solutions with translation symmetries, i.e. travelling waves and relative periodic orbits, whereas in the latter, our calculations reveal episodes of turbulent time evolution that can be approximated by a low-dimensional linear expansion.

An elastically mounted circular cylinder, immersed in a cross-current and free to move along a rectilinear path, is subjected to vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). These vibrations develop through a mechanism referred to as lock-in, where body motion and vortex shedding synchronize at a frequency that may deviate both from the oscillator natural frequency and from the vortex shedding frequency past a fixed cylinder. The present numerical study aims at extending the analysis to curved trajectories, by considering that the cylinder is free to translate along a circular path. The Reynolds number based on the body diameter ($D$) and current velocity ($U$) is set to $100$. A wide range of path radii, from $0.05D$ to $10D$, and values of the reduced velocity (inverse of the oscillator natural frequency non-dimensionalized by $D$ and $U$) up to $30$ are examined, for the concave and convex configurations, i.e. the circular path centre located upstream or downstream of the cylinder. Path curvature results in a major alteration of the flow–body system behaviour compared with rectilinear VIV, with substantially different evolutions in the concave and convex configurations. In addition to the typical lock-in mechanism, two subharmonic forms of synchronization, at half and one third of vortex formation frequency, are uncovered in the convex configuration. They coexist with a desynchronized regime where the body and the flow oscillate at incommensurable frequencies. The four interaction regimes exhibit contrasted trends in terms of structural response, spatiotemporal organization of the wake and associated forces. They particularly differ by their symmetry properties, which are closely linked to the possible reconfiguration of the oscillator due to mean fluid forcing.

Swirling waves frequently occur in a three-dimensional tank under a nearly resonant excitation with oblique excitation angle. The oblique excitation produces two excitation components and the secondary component triggers rotational waves. The detailed mechanism of the switch in circular direction is clearly described in this study. The evolution of the hydrodynamic forces (Fz) on the tank walls presents a beating phenomenon and the switch direction always occurs at the peak and trough of the envelope of the Fz history. The external excitation moment changes the circulation intensity, and finally the swirling wave becomes a single-direction wave, but only for a short time. The profile of the single-direction wave was determined by the dominant sloshing mode and the instantaneous tank motion was found to be a key factor to determine the consequent swirling flow circulating direction.
