Turbulent drag reduction (DR) through streamwise travelling waves of the spanwise wall oscillation is investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Here, in Part 1, wall-resolved large-eddy simulations in a channel flow are conducted to examine how the frequency and wavenumber of the travelling wave influence the DR at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 951$ and $4000$. The actuation parameter space is restricted to the inner-scaled actuation (ISA) pathway, where DR is achieved through direct attenuation of the near-wall scales. The level of turbulence attenuation, hence DR, is found to change with the near-wall Stokes layer protrusion height $\ell _{0.01}$. A range of frequencies is identified where the Stokes layer attenuates turbulence, lifting up the cycle of turbulence generation and thickening the viscous sublayer; in this range, the DR increases as $\ell _{0.01}$ increases up to $30$ viscous units. Outside this range, the strong Stokes shear strain enhances near-wall turbulence generation leading to a drop in DR with increasing $\ell _{0.01}$. We further find that, within our parameter and Reynolds number space, the ISA pathway has a power cost that always exceeds any DR savings. This motivates the study of the outer-scaled actuation pathway in Part 2, where DR is achieved through actuating the outer-scaled motions.

Engineering flow systems operating under low pressures and/or at the micro/nano scale generally include a physically adsorbed gas layer next to the surface. In this paper, we develop a scattering kernel that accounts for the effect of adsorption, arising from van der Waals interactions, on the dynamics of molecules impinging on solid smooth surfaces. In the limit of low bulk density, surface adsorption becomes negligible and the scattering kernel recovers consistently the Cercignani–Lampis model, which best describes molecular collisions with a clean, smooth surface. In the limit of high bulk density, a dense adsorbed molecular layer forms next to the surface and its presence is picked up by the Maxwell model with complete diffuse reflection, which better captures the multiple collisions suffered by molecules. A weight coefficient based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm is incorporated into the modelling to handle the transition between these two limiting conditions of low and high densities. The proposed model is validated against high-fidelity molecular dynamics simulations that are performed for a variety of gas–surface combinations and adsorbed molecular layers with different densities. It is shown that the proposed model very well captures the scattering patterns of beams of gas molecules at different velocities impinging on surfaces, as well as momentum and energy accommodation coefficients in the entire range of explored conditions.

We consider high Reynolds number supersonic flow over a compression ramp in the triple-deck formulation. Previous studies of compression-ramp stability have shown rapid growth of high-frequency disturbances in initial-value computations; however, no physical or numerical origin has yet been identified robustly. By considering linear perturbations to steady compression-ramp solutions, we show that instabilities observed in previous studies do not have a growth rate that is described by the integral eigenrelation of Tutty & Cowley (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 168, 1986, pp. 431–456) for a (long-wave) Rayleigh instability. We solve both the temporal and spatial instability problems in the limit of asymptotically large wavenumber $K$ (or equivalently frequency) and show that the growth rate of the instability remains $o(K)$, being dominated by higher-order terms in the expansion at moderate ramp angles.

Six consecutive solitary waves with identical wave height and separation time are generated to study the flow structures during the uprush–downwash interactions in the swash zone. Using particle image velocimetry, the cross-shore velocity fields are captured. Two different wave conditions are examined with different wave-height-to-water-depth ratios, i.e. $H_o/h=0.11$ and 0.22. The uprush–downwash interaction reaches quasi-steady state from the third solitary wave for both cases. For the former case, a weak non-stationary hydraulic jump appears during the downwash flow for all the six consecutive waves. The weak hydraulic jump evolves into a momentarily ‘stationary’ broken bore when the next wave arrives. For the latter case, the larger wave height generates stronger wave breaking. No non-stationary hydraulic jump is observed as the duration of downwash flow is relatively short. The flow reverses to the onshore direction before the downwash Froude number reaches the hydraulic jump condition. The temporal and spatial evolution of turbulence structure at the quasi-steady state is quantified using the spatial spectral analysis, the integral length scale and turbulence eddy viscosity. The results suggest that the large-scale energy generated during the uprush–downwash interaction modified the slope of the turbulence energy spatial spectrum in the inertial subrange from $-$5/3 to $-$1 in the larger length scale region, indicating the energy cascade depends not only on the dissipation rate, but also on the turbulent kinetic energy from the large-scale turbulence structure because of the large-scale energy injection in the inertial subrange.

Glycerol is a hygroscopic fluid that spontaneously absorbs water vapour from the atmosphere. For applications involving glycerol, care must be taken to avoid exposure to humidity, since its viscosity decreases quickly as water is absorbed. We report experimental measurements of the viscosity of glycerol in a parallel-plate rheometer where the outer interface is exposed to atmosphere. The measurements decrease with time as water is absorbed from the atmosphere and transported throughout the glycerol via diffusion and advection. Measured viscosities drop faster at higher relative humidities, confirming the role of hygroscopicity in the transient viscosities. The rate of viscosity decrease shows a non-monotonic relationship with the rheometer gap height. This behaviour is explained by considering the transition from diffusion-dominated transport in the narrow-gap regime to the large-gap regime where transport is dominated by inertia-driven secondary flows. Numerical simulations of the water absorption and transport confirm this non-monotonic behaviour. The experimental viscosity measurements show unexpectedly fast decreases at very small gap heights, violating the parallel-plate, axisymmetric model. We propose that this drop-off may be due to misalignment in the rheometer that becomes non-negligible for small gaps. Theoretical considerations show that secondary flows in a misaligned rheometer dominate the typical secondary inertial flows in parallel-plate rheometers at small gaps. Finally, simulations in a misaligned parallel-plate system demonstrate the same sharp drop-off in viscosity measurements at small gap heights. This modelling can be used to estimate the gap height where misalignment effects dominate the transient glycerol viscosity measurements.

An experimental study of the dynamics and droplet production in three mechanically generated plunging breaking waves is presented in this two-part paper. In the present paper (Part 2), in-line cinematic holography is used to measure the positions, diameters ($d\geq 100\ \mathrm {\mu }{\rm m}$), times and velocities of droplets generated by the three plunging breaking waves studied in Part 1 (Erinin et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 967, 2023, A35) as the droplets move up across a horizontal measurement plane located just above the wave crests. It is found that there are four major mechanisms for droplet production: closure of the indentation between the top surface of the plunging jet and the splash that it creates, the bursting of large bubbles that were entrapped under the plunging jet at impact, splashing and bubble bursting in the turbulent zone on the front face of the wave and the bursting of small bubbles that reach the water surface at the crest of the non-breaking wave following the breaker. The droplet diameter distributions for the entire droplet set for each breaker are fitted with power-law functions in separate small- and large-diameter regions. The droplet diameter where these power-law functions cross increases monotonically from 820 to 1480 $\mathrm {\mu }{\rm m}$ from the weak to the strong breaker, respectively. The droplet diameter and velocity characteristics and the number of the droplets generated by the four mechanisms are found to vary significantly and the processes that create these differences are discussed.

An experimental study of the dynamics and droplet production in three mechanically generated plunging breaking waves is presented in this two-part paper. In the present paper (Part 1), the dynamics of the three breakers are studied through measurements of the evolution of their free surface profiles during 10 repeated breaking events for each wave. The waves are created from dispersively focused wave packets generated with three wave maker motions that differ primarily by small changes in their overall amplitude. Breaker profiles are measured with a cinematic laser-induced fluorescence technique covering a streamwise region of approximately one breaker wavelength and over a time of 3.4 breaker periods. The aligned profile data is used to create spatio-temporal maps of the ensemble average surface height and the standard deviation of both the local normal distance and the local arc length relative to the instantaneous mean profile. It is found that the mean and standard deviation maps contain strongly correlated localized features and indicate that the transition from laminar to turbulent flow is a highly repeatable process. Regions of high standard deviation include the splash created by the plunging jet impact and subsequent splash impacts at the front of the breaking region as well as the site where the air pocket entrained under the plunging jet at the moment of jet tip impact comes to the surface and pops. In Part 2 (Erinin et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 967, 2023, A36), these features are used to interpret various features of the distributions of droplet number, diameter and velocity.

We design an open-loop active flow control for separated flows around a plunging circular cylinder based on resolvent analysis. The cylinder is plunging at a Strouhal number of 0.36 and a Reynolds number of 500. A linear time-periodic system for control is obtained by linearizing the non-inertial incompressible vorticity equation in the cylinder-fixed frame about a time-averaged base flow. Using the Lyapunouv–Floquet transformation, the linear time-periodic system is transformed into a similar linear time-invariant system, whose resolvent is analysed to obtain an optimal actuating Strouhal number of 0.1464 for the transformed linear system. Simulations show that the active control with tangential actuations is capable of reducing the lift fluctuation by up to 25.7 % when the flow is actuated near the predicted harmonic and subharmonic frequencies.

Short-wave group forcing is a major driving mechanism of infragravity waves. The subharmonic response to wave group forcing approaches resonance in shallow water where the group velocity is equal to the shallow-water wave-propagating speed. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of the connection between the free and bound components of group-induced infragravity waves and the consistency among existing solutions for off- and near-resonance conditions in intermediate and shallow water. Here, a unified solution of group-induced subharmonics is derived based on Green's function for the first time. The new solution is valid for any resonance intensity and is able to describe group-induced subharmonic behaviour at all water depths consistently from a new angle. The proposed solution reduces to existing solutions for intermediate depth (Longuet-Higgins & Stewart, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 13, 1962, pp. 481–504; Zou, Phys. Oceanogr., vol. 41, 2011, pp. 1842–1859), shallow water and/or over a plane sloping beach (Van Leeuwen, PhD thesis, TU Delft, 1992; Schäffer, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 247, 1993, pp. 551–588; Janssen et al., J. Geophys. Res., vol. 108, 2003, p. 3252; Contardo et al., J. Phys. Oceanogr., vol. 51, 2021, pp. 1465–1487; Liao et al., J. Phys. Oceanogr., vol. 51, 2021, pp. 2749–2765). Unlike previous solutions, the Green's function-based solution describes all subharmonics as free subharmonics continuously radiated away from each point source in the group-induced forcing field determined by wave radiation stress gradients. The superposition of all these free subharmonics yields so-called bound subharmonics by previous studies due to group-modulated emission of each free subharmonic through the source field bound to the wave group. Therefore, this solution provides theoretical evidence that the group-induced subharmonic at any observation point is dependent on the surrounding radiation stress field and topography. Under full-resonance conditions in shallow water, downwave-propagating subharmonics excited at all source locations interfere with each other constructively; therefore, their superposed amplitude is proportional to the travel distance of wave groups. Combined with the conventional moving-breakpoint forcing model, the predicted amplitude of the subharmonic in the surf zone by the present solution is in good agreement with laboratory observations.

Upon interaction with underwater shock waves, bubbles can collapse and produce high-speed liquid jets in the direction of the wave propagation. This work experimentally investigates the impact of laser-induced underwater impulsive shock waves, i.e. shock waves with a short, finite width, of variable peak pressure on bubbles of radii in the range 10–500 $\mathrm {\mu }$m. The high-speed visualisations provide new benchmarking of remarkable quality for the validation of numerical simulations and the derivation of scaling laws. The experimental results support scaling laws describing the collapse time and the jet speed of bubbles driven by impulsive shock waves as a function of the impulse provided by the wave. In particular, the collapse time and the jet speed are found to be, respectively, inversely and directly proportional to the time integral of the pressure waveform for bubbles with a collapse time longer than the duration of shock interaction and for shock amplitudes sufficient to trigger a nonlinear bubble collapse. These results provide a criterion for the shock parameters that delimits the jetting and non-jetting behaviour for bubbles having a shock width-to-bubble size ratio smaller than one. Jetting is, however, never observed below a peak pressure value of 14 MPa. This limit, where the pressure becomes insufficient to yield a nonlinear bubble collapse, is likely the result of the time scale of the shock wave passage over the bubble becoming very short with respect to the bubble collapse time scale, resulting in the bubble effectively feeling the shock wave as a spatially uniform change in pressure, and in an (almost) spherical bubble collapse.

This paper presents the effects of wing kinematics on both normal forward flight and escape flight of a dragonfly. A Navier–Stokes-based numerical model has been adopted, and results have been substantiated by experimental data. The wing kinematics of tethered specimens and the prescribed wing morphology of a free-flying dragonfly were used in the simulation. To shed light on the interplay between kinematics and aerodynamics, a parametric study of the kinematics has been conducted. It is found that in escape flight, the dragonfly generates additional lift while the thrust reduces and the overall efficiency drops. Compared with normal forward flight, the escape mode produces larger lift force peaks. When the kinematics change to facilitate escape flight, the aerodynamic forces are affected by not only the flapping kinematics but, in the case of the hindwing, the varied wing–wing vortex interactions. The direction of the resultant force on each wing changes according to the change of the mean of pitching angle and stroke plane angle. We found that in the studied configurations, the varied phasing of the wings has a marginal effect on the aerodynamics of the dragonfly. It reduces lift and increases thrust, and this force modulation is slightly more efficient when the local angle of attack also changes. On the other hand, the change of angle of attack played a major role in leading-edge vortex formations and directing the resultant forces of the wings. The results can be useful in developing flight control strategies for micro air vehicle design.

A slip asymmetry can break the fore–aft symmetry of the local hydrodynamic force distribution on the surface of an otherwise no-slip or uniform-slip particle. Here, we use the Lorentz reciprocal theorem to demonstrate that such asymmetry, even in a fractional amount, can qualitatively alter the swimming characteristics of a self-propelled spherical squirmer, markedly different from those of no-slip or uniform-slip squirmers. Unlike the usual tangential squirming by the thrust-providing B1 mode and the type-determining B2 mode, we discover two unique features for a stick-slip squirmer. First, the squirmer can acquire a swimming velocity U without the B1 mode but simply by a symmetric extensile/contractile squirming from the B2 mode, which is able to reverse the swimming direction of the squirmer. Second, a stresslet $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{S}}$ can also be induced by a unidirectional squirming from the B1 mode, capable of inverting the squirmer's stresslet from extensile type to contractile type or vice versa to change the squirmer from puller to pusher or in a reverse manner. We further show that the two squirming modes can reinforce or compete with each other to enhance or diminish U and $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{S}}$ due to interplays between the asymmetric squirming forces on the stick and the slip faces. A phase diagram is also established to categorize a variety of newly emerging swimming states, such as an enhanced/degraded puller/pusher and a backward puller/pusher, depending on the relative strength of the squirming modes β = B2/B1, the direction of the stick-slip polarity and the degree of the slip disparity. As a result of such cooperative and competitive natures, a stick-slip squirmer can swim more or less efficiently than no-slip and uniform-slip ones. These distinctive features arising from stick-slip disparity can not only be made geometrically tuneable for steering the motion of a squirmer, but also provide new means for making efficient artificial microswimmers using amphiphilic Janus particles.

We consider the role of gravity in solute transport when a thin droplet evaporates. Under the physically relevant assumptions that the contact line is pinned and the solutal Péclet number, ${Pe}$, is large, we identify two asymptotic regimes that depend on the size of the Bond number, ${Bo}$. When ${Bo} = O(1)$ as ${Pe}\rightarrow \infty$, the asymptotic structure of solute transport follows directly from the surface-tension-dominated regime, whereby advection drives solute towards the contact line, only to be countered by local diffusive effects, leading to the formation of the famous ‘coffee ring.’ In the distinguished limit in which ${Bo} = O({Pe}^{4/3})$ as ${Pe}\rightarrow \infty$, this interplay between advection and diffusion takes place alongside that between surface tension and gravity. In each regime, we perform a systematic asymptotic analysis of the solute transport and compare our predictions to numerical simulations. We identify the effect of gravity on the nascent coffee ring, providing quantitative predictions of the size, location and shape of the solute mass profile. In particular, for a fixed Péclet number, as the effect of gravity increases, the coffee ring is diminished in height and situated further from the contact line. Furthermore, for certain values of ${Bo}$, ${Pe}$ and the evaporation time, a secondary peak may exist inside the classical coffee ring. The onset of this secondary peak is linked to the change in type of the critical point in the solute mass profile at the droplet centre. Both the onset and the peak characteristics are shown to be independent of ${Pe}$.

We study experimentally the dynamics of a water droplet on a tilted and vertically oscillating rigid fibre. As we vary the frequency and amplitude of the oscillations the droplet transitions between different modes: harmonic pumping, subharmonic pumping, a combination of rocking and pumping modes, and a combination of pumping and swinging modes. We characterize these responses and report how they affect the sliding speed of the droplet along the fibre. The swinging mode is explained by a minimal model making an analogy between the droplet and a forced elastic pendulum.

We study numerically the characteristics of fluid–fluid displacement in simple mixed-wet porous micromodels using a dynamic pore network model. The porous micromodel consists of distinct water-wet and oil-wet regions, whose fractions are varied systematically to yield a variety of displacement patterns over a wide range of capillary numbers. We find that the impact of mixed-wettability is most prominent at low capillary numbers, and it depends on the complex interplay between wettability fraction and the intrinsic contact angle of the water-wet regions. For example, the fractal dimension of the displacement pattern is a monotonically increasing function of wettability fraction in flow cells with strongly water-wet clusters, but it becomes non-monotonic with respect to wettability fraction in flow cells with weakly water-wet clusters. Additionally, mixed-wettability also manifests itself in the injection pressure signature, which exhibits fluctuations especially at low wettability fraction. Specifically, preferential filling of water-wet regions leads to reduced effective permeability and higher injection pressure, even at vanishingly small capillary numbers. Finally, we demonstrate that scaling analyses based on a weighted average description of the overall wetting state of the mixed-wet system can effectively capture the variations in observed displacement pattern morphology.

We study the onset of the three-dimensional mode A instability in the near wake behind a circular cylinder. We show that long-wavelength perturbations organise in a time-shifting pattern such that the in-plane velocity in each streamwise slice corresponds to the base flow solution at shifted times. This observation introduces an additional unifying characteristic for certain mode A type instabilities. We then analyse the mechanisms which control the growth or decay of these perturbations and highlight the crucial role played by the tilting mechanism which operates via non-local interactions in a manner similar to Biot–Savart induction. We characterise its domain of influence using a Green's function-based approach which allows us to rationalise the non-trivial dependence of the growth rate on the spanwise wavenumber. We connect this behaviour to the subtle balance between the local growth of the perturbations as they are swept along by the flow and the feedback on the perturbations that are generated during the next period of the time-periodic base flow. Finally, we discuss generalisations of our findings to other types of flows.

The traditional approximation neglects the cosine components of the Coriolis acceleration, and this approximation has been widely used in the study of geophysical phenomena. However, the justification of the traditional approximation is questionable under a few circumstances. In particular, dynamics with substantial vertical velocities or geophysical phenomena in the tropics have non-negligible cosine Coriolis terms. Such cases warrant investigations with the non-traditional setting, i.e. the full Coriolis acceleration. In this manuscript, we study the effect of the non-traditional setting on an isothermal, hydrostatic and compressible atmosphere assuming a meridionally homogeneous flow. Employing linear stability analysis, we show that, given appropriate boundary conditions, i.e. a bottom boundary condition that allows for a vertical energy flux and non-reflecting boundary at the top, the atmosphere at rest becomes prone to a novel unstable mode. The validity of assuming a meridionally homogeneous flow is investigated via scale analysis. Numerical experiments were conducted, and Rayleigh damping was used as a numerical approximation for the non-reflecting top boundary. Our three main results are as follows: (i) experiments involving the full Coriolis terms exhibit an exponentially growing instability, yet experiments subjected to the traditional approximation remain stable; (ii) the experimental instability growth rate is close to the theoretical value; (iii) a perturbed version of the unstable mode arises even under sub-optimal bottom boundary conditions. Finally, we conclude our study by discussing the limitations, implications and remaining open questions. Specifically, the influence on numerical deep-atmosphere models and possible physical interpretations of the unstable mode are discussed.

Wave interaction with graded metamaterials exhibits the phenomenon of rainbow reflection, in which broadband wave signals slow down and separate into their frequency components before being reflected. This phenomenon has been qualitatively understood by describing the wave field in the metamaterial using the local Bloch wave approximation (LBWA), which locally represents the wave field as a superposition of propagating wave solutions in the cognate infinite periodic media (so-called Bloch waves). We evaluate the performance of the LBWA quantitatively in the context of two-dimensional linear water-wave scattering by graded arrays of surface-piercing vertical barriers. To do this, we implement the LBWA numerically so that the Bloch waves in one region of the graded array are coupled to Bloch waves in adjacent regions. This coupling is computed by solving the scattering of Bloch waves across the interface between two semi-infinite arrays of vertical barriers, where the barriers in each semi-infinite array can have different submergence depths. Our results suggest that the LBWA accurately predicts the free surface amplitude across a wide range of frequencies, except those just above the cutoff frequencies associated with each of the vertical barriers in the array. This highlights the importance of decaying Bloch modes above the cutoff in rainbow reflection.

Compound surfaces, consisting of periodic arrays of solid patches and free surfaces, exhibit hydrodynamic slipperiness which is quantified by their slip length. The limit of small solid fractions, where the slip length diverges, is of fundamental interest. This paper addresses longitudinal liquid flows over a periodic array of grooves which are partially invaded by the liquid. Assuming that the slats separating the grooves are infinitely thin, the solid fraction $\epsilon$ is set by the invasion depth. Inspired by the singular small-solid-fraction limit for non-invaded grooves (Schnitzer, Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 1, 2016, 052101R), we consider the idealised geometry of $90^{\circ }$ protrusion angles, where an integral force balance in the limit $\epsilon \to 0$ implies a slip length that scales as $\epsilon ^{-1}$. The problem exhibits a nested structure, where the liquid domain is conceptually decomposed into four distinct regions: a unit-cell region on the scale of the period, where the wetted portion of the slat appears as a point singularity; two regions on the scale of the wetted slat, where the flow essentially varies in one dimension; and a transition region about the tip of the slat. Analysing these regions using matched asymptotic expansions and conformal mappings yields the ratio of slip length to semi-period as $2\epsilon ^{-1} - (10/{\rm \pi} )\ln 2 + \cdots$.

Axisymmetric steady solutions of Taylor–Couette flow at high Taylor numbers are studied numerically and theoretically. As the axial period of the solution shortens from approximately one gap length, the Nusselt number goes through two peaks before returning to laminar flow. In this process, the asymptotic nature of the solution changes in four stages, as revealed by the asymptotic analysis. When the aspect ratio of the roll cell is approximately unity, the solution has the Nusselt number proportional to the quarter power of the Taylor number, and captures quantitatively the characteristics of the classical turbulence regime. By shortening the axial period the Nusselt number can even reach the experimental value around the onset of the ultimate turbulence regime. However, at higher Taylor numbers, the theoretical predictions eventually underestimate the experimental values. An important consequence of the asymptotic analyses is that the mean angular momentum should become uniform in the core region unless the axial wavelength is too short. The theoretical scaling laws deduced for the steady solutions can be carried over to Rayleigh–Bénard convection.
