The paper studies the statistics of total and static temperature (total $h_t$ and static $h$ enthalpy) in compressible turbulent plane channel flow using direct numerical simulations (DNS) data covering the range of centreline Mach numbers $0.3\lessapprox \bar {M}_{{{CL}}_x} \lessapprox 2.5$ and Huang–Coleman–Bradshaw friction Reynolds numbers $100\lessapprox Re_{\tau ^\star }\lessapprox 1000$. For this class of very-cold-wall flows, the DNS data for correlation coefficients and joint probability density functions (p.d.f.s) show that $h_t'$ is invariably very strongly correlated with the streamwise velocity fluctuation $u'$, in contrast to static temperature (static enthalpy $h'$) whose correlation with $u'$ weakens rapidly with increasing wall distance. We study various correlations and joint p.d.f.s of $h_t'$ and $h'$ in relation to the fluctuating velocity field, including the turbulent Prandtl number $Pr_{{T}}$, and discuss the predictions of Reynolds analogy. The scaling of the mean enthalpy and the fluctuating enthalpy variance and fluxes with respect to inner and outer velocity scales is investigated. The complex behaviour and scaling of different terms in the transport equations for the enthalpy variance and fluxes are discussed.

We present a systematic study to investigate the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) of subaqueous spherical pendulums with several solid-to-fluid mass ratios $m^*\in [1.14, 14.95]$ and corresponding Reynolds numbers of up to $\textit {Re}\sim 10^4$. A digital object tracking (DOT) method was employed to track the oscillating pendulum spheres whereas the time-resolved 3-D particle tracking velocimetry (tr-3D-PTV) was used to measure the flow field around the spheres. The data obtained from the coupling of the two measuring techniques provide novel insights into the dynamics of pendulum sphere oscillations, instantaneous pressure fluctuations related to vortex shedding around the spheres and the way they are influenced by the vortex and wake interactions. Namely, we show that during the downward motion of the pendulum spheres, vortex rings are shed off the spheres which, in turn, induce short-lived propulsion and, subsequently, distinct deceleration. Further, we used the measured data to improve an existing basic model of pendulum motion, which has significant discrepancies for the period and peak amplitude predictions. We did this by incorporating a vortex-induced drag term and a wake interaction term into the equation. Finally, the improved equations are shown to be capable of predicting the subaqueous pendulum dynamics with high accuracy, for the investigated range of $m^*$. The study thus extends the current understanding of basic fluid dynamic mechanisms such as added mass, nonlinear drag, vortex and pressure dynamics.

A simple two-dimensional fluid–structure interaction problem, involving viscous oscillatory flow in a channel separated by an elastic membrane from a fluid-filled slender cavity, is analysed to shed light on the flow dynamics pertaining to syringomyelia, a neurological disorder characterized by the appearance of a large tubular cavity (syrinx) within the spinal cord. The focus is on configurations in which the velocity induced in the cavity, representing the syrinx, is comparable to that found in the channel, representing the subarachnoid space surrounding the spinal cord, both flows being coupled through a linear elastic equation describing the membrane deformation. An asymptotic analysis for small stroke lengths leads to closed-form expressions for the leading-order oscillatory flow, and also for the stationary flow associated with the first-order corrections, the latter involving a steady distribution of transmembrane pressure. The magnitude of the induced flow is found to depend strongly on the frequency, with the result that for channel flow rates of non-sinusoidal waveform, as those found in the spinal canal, higher harmonics can dominate the sloshing motion in the cavity, in agreement with previous in vivo observations. Under some conditions, the cycle-averaged transmembrane pressure, also showing a marked dependence on the frequency, changes sign on increasing the cavity transverse dimension (i.e. orthogonal to the cord axis), underscoring the importance of cavity size in connection with the underlying hydrodynamics. The analytic results presented here can be instrumental in guiding future numerical investigations, needed to clarify the pathogenesis of syringomyelia cavities.

We investigate the linear Floquet stability of two fluid layers undergoing oscillations in the direction parallel to the flexible wall that separates them. This canonical configuration is inspired by the cerebrospinal fluid flow in the spinal canal of subjects with hydromyelia/syringomyelia. The analysis focuses on the marginal conditions for the onset of instability, and how these depend on the spatial wavelength of the perturbation, and on the values of the control parameters, which are the two channel widths, the Reynolds number and the wall stiffness. Unstable perturbations are found to oscillate synchronous with the base flow. The wavelength of the most unstable perturbation, of the order of the stroke length of the basic oscillatory motion, depends strongly on the wall stiffness, but is only weakly influenced by the channel widths and the Reynolds number. In general, around criticality, it was found that increasing the Reynolds number has a destabilizing effect, and that decreasing the canal widths stabilizes the instability. The wall stiffness on the other hand has a non-monotonic effect, exhibiting an intermediate value for which the instability is maximally amplified. The present analysis is a first step towards a better understanding of the physical mechanisms that govern many (bio)fluid mechanical problems that involve oscillatory flows near compliant walls.

Heat transfer by large deformable drops in a turbulent flow is a complex and rich-in-physics system, in which drop deformation, breakage and coalescence influence the transport of heat. We study this problem by coupling direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulence with a phase-field method for the interface description. Simulations are run at fixed-shear Reynolds and Weber numbers. To evaluate the influence of microscopic flow properties, like momentum/thermal diffusivity, on macroscopic flow properties, like mean temperature or heat transfer rates, we consider four different values of the Prandtl number, which is the momentum to thermal diffusivity ratio: $Pr=1$, $Pr=2$, $Pr=4$ and $Pr=8$. The drop volume fraction is $\varPhi \simeq 5.4\,\%$ for all cases. Drops are initially warmer than the turbulent carrier fluid and release heat at different rates depending on the value of $Pr$, but also on their size and on their own dynamics (topology, breakage, drop–drop interaction). Computing the time behaviour of the drops and carrier fluid average temperatures, we clearly show that an increase of $Pr$ slows down the heat transfer process. We explain our results by a simplified phenomenological model: we show that the time behaviour of the drop average temperature is self-similar, and a universal behaviour can be found upon rescaling by $t/Pr^{2/3}$. Accordingly, the heat transfer coefficient $\mathcal {H}$ (respectively its dimensionless counterpart, the Nusselt number $Nu$) scales as $\mathcal {H}\sim Pr^{-2/3}$ (respectively $Nu\sim Pr^{1/3}$) at the beginning of the simulation, and tends to $\mathcal {H}\sim Pr^{-1/2}$ (respectively $Nu\sim Pr^{1/2}$) at later times. These different scalings can be explained via the boundary layer theory and are consistent with previous theoretical/numerical predictions.

From industrial-scale production to small-scale fabrication of functional films, the blade coating method is used widely to apply a uniform thin liquid film on a moving substrate. However, conventional hydrodynamic models are inadequate for laboratory-scale low-speed blade coating, where capillary forces dominate. In this study, the low-speed blade coating of non-evaporative Newtonian fluids was investigated in experimental, computational and analytical approaches. The transient free boundary problem was solved utilizing a two-dimensional finite element method, and a simple viscocapillary model was developed to describe the viscous stress and capillary forces within the puddle, and predict the thickness of the wet film as a function of the speed of the substrate. Comparing the predicted film thickness with the computational results, and a flow visualization experiment of blade coating with silicone oil, respectively, confirmed the model's validity. The study indicates that the proposed model may be a useful tool for optimizing laboratory coating processes, as it provides a greater understanding of the low-speed blade coating system on a laboratory scale.

A transcritical domain with a sharp two-phase interface may exist during the early times of liquid hydrocarbon fuel injection at supercritical pressure. Thus, two-phase dynamics are sustained before substantial heating of the liquid and drive the early three-dimensional deformation and atomisation. A recent study of a transcritical liquid jet showed distinct deformation features caused by interface thermodynamics, low surface tension and intraphase diffusive mixing. In the present work, the compressible vortex identification method $\lambda _\rho$ is used to study the vortex dynamics in a cool liquid n-decane transcritical jet surrounded by a hotter oxygen gaseous stream at supercritical pressures. The relationship between vortical structures and the liquid surface evolution is detailed, along with the vorticity generation mechanisms, including variable-density effects. The roles of hairpin and roller vortices in the early deformation of lobes, the layering and tearing of liquid sheets and the formation of fuel-rich gaseous blobs are analysed. At these high pressures, enhanced intraphase mixing and ambient gas dissolution affect the local liquid structures (i.e. lobes). Thus, liquid breakup differs from classical sub-critical atomisation. Near the interface, liquid density and viscosity drop by up to 10 % and 70 %, respectively, and the liquid is more easily affected by the vortical motion (e.g. liquid sheets wrap around vortices). Despite the variable density, compressible vorticity generation terms are smaller than the vortex stretching and tilting. Layering traps and aligns the vortices along the streamwise direction while mitigating the generation of new rollers.

Partially molten rock is a densely packed, melt-saturated, granular medium, but it has seldom been considered in these terms. In this paper we extend the continuum theory of partially molten rock to incorporate the physics of granular media. Our formulation includes dilatancy in a viscous constitutive law and introduces a non-local fluidity. We analyse the resulting poro-viscous–granular theory in terms of two modes of liquid–solid segregation that are observed in published torsion experiments: localisation of liquid into high-porosity sheets and radially inward liquid flow. We show that the newly incorporated granular physics brings the theory into agreement with experiments. We discuss these results in the context of grain-scale physics across the nominal jamming fraction at the high homologous temperatures relevant in geological systems.

The dynamics of the interaction of a system of two thin volatile liquid droplets resting on a soft viscoelastic solid substrate are investigated theoretically. The developed model fully considers the effect of evaporative cooling and the generated Marangoni stresses due to the induced thermal gradients, while also accounting for the effect of the gas phase composition and the diffusion of vapour in the atmosphere of the droplets. Using the framework of lubrication theory, we derive evolution equations for both the droplet profile and the displacement of the elastic solid, which are solved in combination with Laplace's equation for the vapour concentration in the gas phase. A disjoining-pressure/precursor-film approach is used to describe contact-line motion. The evolution equations are solved numerically, using the finite-element method, and we present a thorough parametric analysis to investigate the physical properties and mechanisms that affect the dynamics of droplet interactions. The results show that the droplets interact through both the soft substrate and the gas phase. In the absence of thermocapillary phenomena, the combined effect of non-uniform evaporation due to the increased vapour concentration between the two droplets and elastocapillary phenomena determines whether the drop–drop interaction is attractive or repulsive. The Marangoni stresses suppress droplet attraction at the early stages of the drying process and lead to longer droplet lifetimes. For substrates with intermediate stiffness, the emergence of spontaneous symmetry breaking at late stages of evaporation is found. The rich dynamics of this complex system is explored by constructing a detailed map of the dynamic regimes.

Canopy flows in the atmospheric surface layer play important economic and ecological roles, governing the dispersion of passive scalars in the environment. The interaction of high-velocity fluid and large-scale surface-mounted obstacles in canopy flows produces drag and causes intense, inhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulence. In this work, we focus on the turbulent dispersion of passive scalars by studying the ‘pair dispersion’ – a statistical measure of relative motion between particles. We analyse the results of a three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry experiment in a wind-tunnel canopy flow, focusing on small scales. We confirm the existence of local isotropy of pair dispersion at scales smaller than a characteristic shear length scale $L_\varGamma =(\epsilon /\varGamma ^3)^{1/2}$, where $\epsilon$ and $\varGamma$ are the mean dissipation rate and shear rate, respectively. Furthermore, we show that pair dispersion in this locally isotropic regime is a scale-dependent super-diffusive process, similar to what occurs in homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows. In addition, we measure the pair relative velocity correlation function, showing that its de-correlation occurs in the locally isotropic regime, and discuss the implications of this observation for modelling pair dispersion. Thus, our study extends the fundamental understanding of turbulent pair dispersion to the anisotropic inhomogeneous turbulent canopy flow, bringing valuable information for modelling scalar dispersion in the atmospheric surface layer.

Existing theoretical analyses of Faraday waves in Hele-Shaw cells rely on the Darcy approximation and assume a parabolic flow profile in the narrow direction. However, Darcy's model is known to be inaccurate when convective or unsteady inertial effects are important. In this work, we propose a gap-averaged Floquet theory accounting for inertial effects induced by the unsteady terms in the Navier–Stokes equations, a scenario that corresponds to a pulsatile flow where the fluid motion reduces to a two-dimensional oscillating Poiseuille flow, similarly to the Womersley flow in arteries. When gap-averaging the linearised Navier–Stokes equation, this results in a modified damping coefficient, which is a function of the ratio between the Stokes boundary layer thickness and the cell's gap, and whose complex value depends on the frequency of the wave response specific to each unstable parametric region. We first revisit the standard case of horizontally infinite rectangular Hele-Shaw cells by also accounting for a dynamic contact angle model. A comparison with existing experiments shows the predictive improvement brought by the present theory and points out how the standard gap-averaged model often underestimates the Faraday threshold. The analysis is then extended to the less conventional case of thin annuli. A series of dedicated experiments for this configuration highlights how Darcy's thin-gap approximation overlooks a frequency detuning that is essential to correctly predict the locations of the Faraday tongues in the frequency–amplitude parameter plane. These findings are well rationalised and captured by the present model.

The unsteady wake interference of unequal-height tandem finite wall-mounted cylinders (FWMCs) fully submerged in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) was investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry. The aspect ratios of the cylinders were fixed at $h/d = 5.3$ for the upstream cylinder (UC) and $H/d = 7.0$ for the downstream cylinder (DC) to achieve a height ratio of $h/H = 0.75$, where d is the diameter of the cylinders. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $Re = 5540$ and the submergence ratio was $\delta /H = 1.2$, where $\delta $ is the TBL thickness. Three main flow regimes of tandem FWMCs were examined by varying the centre-to-centre spacing ($s$) between the cylinders: extended-body ($s/d = 2$), reattachment ($s/d = 4$) and co-shedding ($s/d = 6$) regimes. These test cases denoted as SR2, SR4 and SR6, respectively, were compared with a reference isolated cylinder (SC) with an aspect ratio similar to that of the DC. Spatio-temporal analysis of the flow field showed that the gap region of SR2 is characterized by a strong downwash of alternating low- and high-momentum fluid induced by the approach flow that is deflected from the unsheltered portion of the DC. In contrast, the gap region of SR4 and SR6 exhibited both downwash and upwash flow with a saddle point that moves closer to the mid-height of the UC as the spacing ratio increases. The upwash and downwash shear layers were associated with small-scale vortices with Strouhal numbers larger than that of the Kármán vortex shedding in the spanwise shear layers. The wake structure behind the DC was significantly altered compared with the SC due to sheltering effects, and the spacing ratio had a significant impact on the spatio-temporal evolution of the vortices.

A rigid object moving in a viscous fluid and in close proximity to an elastic wall experiences self-generated elastohydrodynamic interactions. This has been the subject of intense research activity, with recent and growing attention given to the particular case of elastomeric and gel-like substrates. Here, we address the situation where the elastic wall is replaced by a capillary surface. Specifically, we analyse the lubrication flow generated by the prescribed normal motion of a rigid infinite cylinder near the deformable interface separating two immiscible and incompressible viscous fluids. Using a combination of analytical and numerical treatments, we compute the emergent capillary-lubrication force at leading order in capillary compliance, and characterize its dependencies with the interfacial tension, viscosities of the fluids, and length scales of the problem. Interestingly, we identify two main contributions: (i) a velocity-dependent adhesive-like force; (ii) an acceleration-dependant inertia-like force. Our results may have implications for the mobility of colloids near complex interfaces and for the motility of confined microbiological entities.

We derive reduced models for extrusion problems where it is necessary to account for fluid compressibility. We consider the two-dimensional extensional flow of a compressible viscous fluid and discuss two specific applications: weakly compressible fluids and bubbly liquid–gas mixtures that behave as a single compressible fluid. The mathematical model we present consists of equations for conservation of mass, conservation of momentum and a closure relationship between the pressure and density. The most substantial differences between compressible extrusion problems is in the closure relationship. By integrating the conservation equations across the fluid cross-section and exploiting a slender aspect ratio, we derive reduced equations for conservation of mass and conservation of momentum in the direction of flow. The reduced system of equations relating cross-sectionally averaged quantities is closed by a relationship between the averaged pressure and density, which will differ substantially depending on the application. We demonstrate the utility of a reduced model for both the weakly compressible fluid and bubbly mixture applications; namely, in providing valuable quantitative insights without needing to solve a complicated free-boundary problem.

The inverse problem of steady two-dimensional open channel free-surface flow is considered, with the focus on determining two types of disturbances: a surface pressure distribution and solid channel bottom topography. A closed-form expression for the inverse surface pressure is derived, and a linear Fredholm equation of the first kind is shown to describe the inverse topography problem, which then needs to be descretised and solved numerically. However, the equation for the channel bottom is prone to instability, so the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) method is proposed as a way to stabilise the associated discrete solution. The effectiveness of the TSVD method is demonstrated through several numerical examples, and its performance in the presence of error-contaminated input data is also examined. The results show that the TSVD method can recover the topography accurately from the forward free-surface problem, and provide good approximations even with noisy input data.

The spectral behaviour of random sawtooth waves propagating in the inner surf zone is investigated in this study. We show that the elevation energy spectrum exhibits a universal shape with an $\omega ^{-2}$ tendency in the inertial subrange and an exponential decay in the diffusive subrange ($\omega$ being the angular frequency). A theoretical spectrum is derived based on the similarities between sawtooth waves in the inner surf zone and Burgers wave solutions. Very good agreement is shown between this theoretical spectrum and laboratory experiments covering a large range of incident random wave conditions. Additionally, an equation describing the universal shape of the dissipation spectrum is derived. It highlights that the dissipation spectrum is nearly constant in the inertial subrange, consistent with prior laboratory observations. The findings presented in this study can be useful to improve broken wave dissipation parametrizations in stochastic spectral wave models.

To explore the impact of surface viscosity on coexisting fluid domains in biomembranes we consider two-phase fluid deformable surfaces as model systems for biomembranes. Such surfaces are modelled by incompressible surface Navier–Stokes–Cahn–Hilliard-like equations with bending forces. We derive this model using the Lagrange–d’Alembert principle considering various dissipation mechanisms. The highly nonlinear model is solved numerically to explore the tight interplay between surface evolution, surface phase composition, surface curvature and surface hydrodynamics. It is demonstrated that hydrodynamics can enhance bulging and furrow formation, which both can further develop to pinch-offs. The numerical approach builds on a Taylor–Hood element for the surface Navier–Stokes part, a semi-implicit approach for the Cahn–Hilliard part, higher-order surface parametrizations, appropriate approximations of the geometric quantities, and mesh redistribution. We demonstrate convergence properties that are known to be optimal for simplified subproblems.

We introduce a geometric analysis of turbulent mixing in density-stratified flows based on the alignment of the density gradient in two orthogonal bases that are locally constructed from the velocity gradient tensor. The first basis connects diapycnal mixing to rotation and shearing motions, building on the recent ‘rortex–shear decomposition’ in stratified shear layers (Jiang et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A30), while the second basis connects mixing to the principal axes of the viscous dissipation tensor. Applying this framework to datasets taken in the stratified inclined duct laboratory experiment reveals that density gradients in locations of high shear tend to align preferentially (i) along the direction of minimum dissipation and (ii) normal to the plane spanned by the rortex and shear vectors. The analysis of the local alignment across increasingly turbulent flows offers new insights into the intricate relationship between the density gradient and dissipation, and thus diapycnal mixing.

We study the large-scale dynamics and prediction of hydrodynamic transport in random fracture networks. The flow and transport behaviour is characterized by first passage times and displacement statistics, which show heavy tails and anomalous dispersion with a strong dependence on the injection condition. The origin of these behaviours is investigated in terms of Lagrangian velocities sampled equidistantly along particle trajectories, unlike classical sampling strategies at a constant rate. The velocity series are analysed by their copula density, the joint distribution of the velocity unit scores, which reveals a simple, albeit hidden, correlation structure that can be described by a Gaussian copula. Based on this insight, we derive a Langevin equation for the evolution of equidistant particle speeds. In this framework, particle motion is quantified by a stochastic time-domain random walk, the joint density of particle position, and speed satisfies a Klein–Kramers equation. The upscaled theory quantifies particle motion in terms of the characteristic fracture length scale and the distribution of Eulerian flow velocities. That is, it is predictive in the sense that it does not require the a priori knowledge of transport attributes. The upscaled model captures non-Fickian transport features, and their dependence on the injection conditions in terms of the velocity point statistics and average fracture length. It shows that the first passage times and displacement moments are dominated by extremes occurring at the first step. The presented approach integrates the interaction of flow and structure into a predictive model for large-scale transport in random fracture networks.
