Drop coalescence occurs through the rapid growth of a liquid bridge that connects the two drops. At early times after contact, the bridge dynamics is typically self-similar, with details depending on the geometry and viscosity of the liquid. In this paper we analyse the coalescence of two-dimensional viscous drops that float on a quiescent deep pool; such drops are called liquid lenses. The analysis is based on the thin-sheet equations, which were recently shown to accurately capture experiments of liquid lens coalescence. It is found that the bridge dynamics follows a self-similar solution at leading order, but, depending on the large-scale boundary conditions on the drop, significant corrections may arise to this solution. This dynamics is studied in detail using numerical simulations and through matched asymptotics. We show that the liquid lens coalescence can involve a global translation of the drops, a feature that is confirmed experimentally.

It has been commonly observed on open waters that ducklings/goslings follow their mothers in a highly organized formation. The questions arise: (1) why are they swimming in formation? (2) what is the best swimming formation? (3) how much energy can be preserved by each individual in formation swimming? To address these questions, we established a simplified mathematical and numerical model and calculated the wave drag on a group of waterfowl in a swimming formation. We observed two new and interesting findings: wave-riding and wave-passing. By riding the waves generated by a mother duck, a trailing duckling can obtain a significant wave-drag reduction. When a duckling swims at the ‘sweet point’ behind its mother, a destructive wave interference phenomenon occurs and the wave drag of the duckling turns positive, pushing the duckling forward. More interestingly, this wave-riding benefit could be sustained by the rest of the ducklings in a single-file line formation. Starting from the third one in a queue, the wave drag of individuals gradually tended towards zero, and a delicate dynamic equilibrium was achieved. Each individual under that equilibrium acted as a wave passer, passing the waves’ energy to its trailing one without any energy losses. Wave-riding and wave-passing are probably the principal reasons for the evolution of swimming formation by waterfowl. This study is the first to reveal the reasons why the formation movement of waterfowl can preserve individuals’ energy expenditure. Our calculations provide new insights into the mechanisms of formation swimming.

We study the stratified gas in a rapidly rotating centrifuge as a model for the Earth's atmosphere. Based on methods of perturbation theory, it is shown that in certain regimes, internal waves in the gas centrifuge have the same dispersion relation to leading order as their atmospheric siblings. Assuming an air filled centrifuge with a radius of around 50 cm, the optimal rotational frequency for realistic atmosphere-like waves is around 10 000 revolutions per minute. Using gases of lower heat capacities at constant pressure, such as xenon, the rotational frequencies can be even halved to obtain the same results. Similar to the atmosphere, it is feasible in the gas centrifuge to generate a clear scale separation of wave frequencies and therefore phase speeds between acoustic waves and internal waves. In addition to the centrifugal force, the Coriolis force acts in the same plane. However, its influence on axially homogeneous internal waves appears only as a higher-order correction. We conclude that the gas centrifuge provides an unprecedented opportunity to investigate atmospheric internal waves experimentally with a compressible working fluid.

The linear convective instability of a mixture of dry air, water vapour and liquid water, with a stable unsaturated layer residing on an unstable saturated layer, is studied. It may serve as a prototype model for understanding the instability that causes mixing at the top of stratocumulus cloud or fog. Such a cloud-clear air interface is modelled as an infinitely thin saturation interface where radiative and evaporative cooling take place. The interface position is determined by the Clausius–Clapeyron equation, and can undulate with the evolution of moisture and temperature. In the small-amplitude regime two physical mechanisms are revealed. First, the interface undulation leads to the undulation of the cooling source, which destabilizes the system by superposing a vertical dipole heating anomaly on the convective cell. Second, the evolution of the moisture field induces non-uniform evaporation at the interface, which stabilizes the system by introducing a stronger evaporative cooling in the ascending region and vice versa in the descending region. These two mechanisms are competing, and their relative contribution to the instability is quantified by theoretically estimating their relative contribution to buoyancy flux tendency. When there is only evaporative cooling, the two mechanisms break even, and the marginal stability curve remains the same as the classic two-layer Rayleigh–Bénard convection with a fixed cooling source.

This research is motivated by the desire to control the solids distribution during the drying of a film containing particles of two different sizes. A variety of particle arrangements in dried films has been seen experimentally, including a thin layer of small particles at the top surface. However, it is not fully understood why this would occur. This work formulates and solves a colloidal hydrodynamics model for (i) diffusion alone and (ii) diffusion plus excluded volume diffusiophoresis, to determine their relative importance in affecting the particle arrangement. The methodology followed is to derive partial differential equations (PDEs) describing the motion of two components in a drying film. The diffusive fluxes are predicted by generalising the Stokes–Einstein diffusion coefficient, with the dispersion compressibility used to produce equations valid up until close packing. A further set of novel equations incorporating diffusiophoresis is derived. The diffusiophoretic mechanism investigated in this work is the small particles being excluded from a volume around the large particles. The resulting PDEs are scaled and solved numerically using a finite volume method. The model includes the chemical potentials of the particles, allowing for incorporation of any interaction term. The relative magnitudes of the fluxes of the differently sized particles are compared using scaling arguments and via numerical results. The diffusion results, without any inter-particle interactions, predict stratification of large particles to the top surface. Addition of excluded volume diffusiophoresis introduces a downwards flux on the large particles, that can result in small-on-top stratification, thus providing a potential explanation of the experimental observations.

The force balance of rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection regimes is investigated using direct numerical simulation on a laterally periodic domain, vertically bounded by no-slip walls. We provide a comprehensive view of the interplay between governing forces both in the bulk and near the walls. We observe, as in other prior studies, regimes of cells, convective Taylor columns, plumes, large-scale vortices (LSVs) and rotation-affected convection. Regimes of rapidly rotating convection are dominated by geostrophy, the balance between Coriolis and pressure-gradient forces. The higher-order interplay between inertial, viscous and buoyancy forces defines a subdominant balance that distinguishes the geostrophic states. It consists of viscous and buoyancy forces for cells and columns, inertial, viscous and buoyancy forces for plumes, and inertial forces for LSVs. In rotation-affected convection, inertial and pressure-gradient forces constitute the dominant balance; Coriolis, viscous and buoyancy forces form the subdominant balance. Near the walls, in geostrophic regimes, force magnitudes are larger than in the bulk; buoyancy contributes little to the subdominant balance of cells, columns and plumes. Increased force magnitudes denote increased ageostrophy near the walls. Nonetheless, the flow is geostrophic as the bulk. Inertia becomes increasingly more important compared with the bulk, and enters the subdominant balance of columns. As the bulk, the near-wall flow loses rotational constraint in rotation-affected convection. Consequently, kinetic boundary layers deviate from the expected behaviour from linear Ekman boundary layer theory. Our findings elucidate the dynamical balances of rotating thermal convection under realistic top/bottom boundary conditions, relevant to laboratory settings and large-scale natural flows.

Apparent inconsistency between (i) experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) data that show the significant influence of differential diffusion on the turbulent burning rate and (ii) recent complex-chemistry DNS data that indicate mitigation of the influence of differential diffusion on conditioned profiles of various local flame characteristics at high Karlovitz numbers, is explored by analysing new DNS data obtained from lean hydrogen–air turbulent flames. Both aforementioned effects are observed by analysing the same DNS data provided that the conditioned profiles are sampled from the entire computational domain. On the contrary, the conditioned profiles sampled at the leading edge of the mean flame brush do not indicate the mitigation, but are significantly affected by differential diffusion phenomena, e.g. because reaction zones are highly curved at the leading edge. This observation is consistent with a significant increase in the computed turbulent burning velocity with decreasing Lewis number, with all the results considered jointly being consonant with the leading point concept of premixed turbulent combustion. The concept is further supported by comparing DNS data obtained by allowing for preferential diffusion solely for a single species, either atomic or molecular hydrogen.

In droplet impacts, transitions between coalescence and bouncing are determined by complex interplays of multiple mechanisms dominating at various length scales. Here we investigate the mechanisms and governing parameters comprehensively by experiments and scaling analyses, providing a unified framework for understanding and predicting the outcomes when using different fluids. Specifically, while bouncing had not been observed in head-on collisions of water drops under atmospheric conditions, it was found in our experiments to appear on increasing the droplet diameter sufficiently. Contrarily, while bouncing was always observed in head-on impacts of alkane drops, we found it to disappear on decreasing the diameter sufficiently. The variations are related to gas draining dynamics in the inter-droplet film and suggest an easier means for controlling bouncing as compared to alternating the ambient pressure usually sought. The scaling analysis further shows that for a given Weber number, enlarging droplet diameter or fluid viscosities, or lowering surface tension contributes to a larger characteristic minimum thickness of the gas film, thus enhancing bouncing. The key dimensionless group $(O{h_{g,l}},\;O{h_l},\;{A^\ast })$ is identified, referred to as the two-phase Ohnesorge number, the Ohnesorge number of liquid and the Hamaker constant, respectively. Our thickness-based model indicates that as ${h^{\prime}_{m,c}} > 21.1{h_{cr}}$, where ${h^{\prime}_{m,c}}$ is the maximum value of the characteristic minimum film thickness $({h_{m,c}})$ and ${h_{cr}}$ is the critical thickness, bouncing occurs in both head-on and off-centre collisions. That is, when $1.2O{h_{g,l}}/(1 - 2O{h_l}) > \sqrt[3]{{{A^\ast }}}$, a fully developed bouncing regime occurs, thereby yielding a lower coalescence efficiency. The transitional Weber number is found universally to be 4.

Direct numerical simulations are carried out to study the effect of finite Weissenberg number up to $Wi=16$ on laminar and turbulent channel flows of an elastoviscoplastic (EVP) fluid, at a fixed bulk Reynolds number of $2800$. The incompressible flow equations are coupled with the evolution equation for the EVP stress tensor by a modified Saramito model that extends both the Bingham viscoplastic and the finite extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) viscoelastic models. In turbulent flow, we find that drag decreases with both the Bingham and Weissenberg numbers, until the flow laminarises at high enough elastic and yield stresses. Hence, a higher drag reduction is achieved than in the viscoelastic flow at the same Weissenberg number. The drag reduction persists at Bingham numbers up to 20, in contrast to viscoplastic flow, where the drag increases in the laminar regime compared with a Newtonian flow. Moreover, elasticity affects the laminarisation of an EVP flow in a non-monotonic fashion, delaying it at lower and promoting it at higher Weissenberg numbers. A hibernation phenomenon is observed in the EVP flow, leading to large changes in the unyielded regions. Finally, plasticity is observed to affect both low- and high-speed streaks equally, attenuating the turbulent dissipation and the fragmentation of turbulent structures.

Motivated by the industrial manufacture of organic light-emitting-diode displays, we formulate and analyse a mathematical model for the evolution of a thin droplet in a shallow axisymmetric well of rather general shape both before and after touchdown that accounts for the spatially non-uniform evaporation of the fluid, perform physical experiments using three cylindrical wells with different small aspect ratios, and validate the mathematical model by comparing the present experimental results with the corresponding theoretical predictions for a cylindrical well.

The problem of unidirectional shoaling of a water-wave field with a narrow energy spectrum is treated by using a new Alber equation. The stability of the linear stationary solution to small non-stationary disturbances is analysed; and numerical solutions for its subsequent long-distance evolution are presented. The results quantify the physics which causes the gradual decay in the probability of freak-wave occurrence, when moving from deep to shallow coastal waters.

Small viscous effects in high-Reynolds-number rotational flows always accumulate over time to have a leading-order effect. Therefore, the high-Reynolds-number limit for the Navier–Stokes equations is singular. It is important to investigate whether a solution of the Euler equations can approximate a real flow at large Reynolds number. These facts are often overlooked and, as a result, the Euler equations are used to simulate laminar rotational flows at large Reynolds number. Based on the Fredholm alternative, an asymptotic perturbation theory is described to establish secularity conditions determined by viscosity for an inviscid solution to approximate a real viscous fluid. Four important classical inviscid solutions are investigated using the theory with the following conclusions. The Stuart cats’ eyes and Mallier–Maslowe vortices are inconsistent with any real fluid at high Reynolds number; whereas Hill's spherical vortex is confirmed to be consistent with a steady state in the spherical core region and the Lamb–Chaplygin dipole is found to be consistent with a quasi-steady state in the circular core region. These solutions have been widely used for analysing the stability of vortex flows and wakes, and their interactions with shock waves or bubbles. Serendipitously, we have revealed an original exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations which is time dependent, has non-zero nonlinear convective terms and is restricted to a finite domain with the decay rate depending on dipole radius.

The slow motion of a small buoyant sphere near a right dihedral corner made by tangentially sliding walls is investigated. Under creeping-flow conditions the force and torque on the sphere can be decomposed into eleven elementary types of motion involving simple particle translations, particle rotations and wall movements. Force and torque balances are employed to find the velocity and rotation of the particle as functions of its location. Depending on the ratio of the wall velocities and the gravitational settling velocity of the sphere, different dynamical regimes are identified. In particular, a non-trivial line attractor/repeller for the particle motion exists at a location detached from both the walls. The existence, location and stability of the corresponding two-dimensional fixed point are studied depending on the wall velocities and the buoyancy force. The impact of the line attractors/repellers on the motion of small particles in cavities and its relevance for corner cleaning applications are discussed.

We present a theoretical stability analysis for an expanding accretion shock that does not involve a rarefaction wave behind it. The dispersion equation that determines the eigenvalues of the problem and the explicit formulae for the corresponding eigenfunction profiles are presented for an arbitrary equation of state and finite-strength shocks. For spherically and cylindrically expanding steady shock waves, we demonstrate the possibility of instability in a literal sense, a power-law growth of shock-front perturbations with time, in the range of $h_c< h<1+2 {\mathcal {M}}_2$, where $h$ is the D'yakov-Kontorovich parameter, $h_c$ is its critical value corresponding to the onset of the instability and ${\mathcal {M}}_2$ is the downstream Mach number. Shock divergence is a stabilizing factor and, therefore, instability is found for high angular mode numbers. As the parameter $h$ increases from $h_c$ to $1+2 {\mathcal {M}}_2$, the instability power index grows from zero to infinity. This result contrasts with the classic theory applicable to planar isolated shocks, which predicts spontaneous acoustic emission associated with constant-amplitude oscillations of the perturbed shock in the range $h_c< h<1+2 {\mathcal {M}}_2$. Examples are given for three different equations of state: ideal gas, van der Waals gas and three-terms constitutive equation for simple metals.

We study long surface and internal ring waves propagating in a stratified fluid over a parallel shear current. The far-field modal and amplitude equations for the ring waves are presented in dimensional form. We re-derive the modal equations from the formulation for plane waves tangent to the ring wave, which opens a way to obtaining important characteristics of the ring waves (group speed, wave action conservation law) and to constructing more general ‘hybrid solutions’ consisting of a part of a ring wave and two tangent plane waves. The modal equations constitute a new spectral problem, and are analysed for a number of examples of surface ring waves in a homogeneous fluid and internal ring waves in a stratified fluid. Detailed analysis is developed for the case of a two-layered fluid with a linear shear current where we study their wavefronts and two-dimensional modal structure. Comparisons are made between the modal functions (i.e. eigenfunctions of the relevant spectral problems) for the surface waves in homogeneous and two-layered fluids, as well as the interfacial waves described exactly and in the rigid-lid approximation. We also analyse the wavefronts of surface and interfacial waves for a large family of power-law upper-layer currents, which can be used to model wind generated currents, river inflows and exchange flows in straits. Global and local measures of the deformation of wavefronts are introduced and evaluated.

The growth of attached bubbles during the electrochemical evolution of hydrogen at a horizontal cathode at the base of a quiescent, dilute aqueous solution is analysed using a simple model of the process that includes the Butler–Volmer reaction model, the diffusion and migration of electroactive species and a symmetry condition that approximately accounts for the presence of periodically spaced bubbles on the electrode surface. The diffusion controlled growth of a bubble approximately follows a $t^{1/2}$ law when the spacing of the bubbles on the electrode is large, departing slightly from it due to the non-uniformity of the concentration of dissolved hydrogen in the supersaturated solution into which the bubble grows, and approaches a $t^{1/3}$ law when the spacing decreases. The space- and time-averaged current density increases exponentially with the applied voltage for an alkaline solution when the consumption of water in the reaction is not taken into account. For an acidic solution, the average current density saturates to a transport limited value that depends on bubble spacing. For a given voltage, the presence of attached bubbles increases the average current density due to the decrease of the concentration overpotential caused by the bubbles. The spacing of the bubbles on the electrode surface decreases when the voltage increases if the maximum supersaturation at the electrode is imposed to be constant. The result suggests that coalescence of attached bubbles will occur above a certain voltage.

Numerical experiments on the turbulent entrainment and mixing of scalars in a incompressible flow have been performed. These simulations are based on a scale decomposition of the velocity field, thus allowing the establishment from a dynamic point of view of the evolution of scalar fields under the separate action of large-scale coherent motions and small-scale fluctuations. The turbulent spectrum can be split into active and inactive flow structures. The large-scale engulfment phenomena actively prescribe the mixing velocity by amplifying inertial fluxes and by setting the area and the fluctuating geometry of the scalar interface. On the contrary, small-scale isotropic nibbling phenomena are essentially inactive in the mixing process. It is found that the inertial mechanisms initiate the process of entrainment at large scales to be finally processed by scalar diffusion at the molecular level. This last stage does not prescribe the amount of mixing but adapts itself to the conditions imposed by the coherent anisotropic motion at large scales. The present results may have strong repercussions for the theoretical approach to scalar mixing, as anticipated here by simple heuristic arguments which are shown able to reveal the rich dynamics of the process. Interesting repercussions are also envisaged for turbulence closures, in particular for large-eddy simulation approaches where only the large scales of the velocity field are resolved.

Many biological microswimmers locomote by periodically beating the densely packed cilia on their cell surface in a wave-like fashion. While the swimming mechanisms of ciliated microswimmers have been extensively studied both from the analytical and the numerical point of view, optimisation of the ciliary motion of microswimmers has received limited attention, especially for non-spherical shapes. In this paper, using an envelope model for the microswimmer, we numerically optimise the ciliary motion of a ciliate with an arbitrary axisymmetric shape. Forward solutions are found using a fast boundary-integral method, and the efficiency sensitivities are derived using an adjoint-based method. Our results show that a prolate microswimmer with a $2\,{:}\,1$ aspect ratio shares similar optimal ciliary motion as the spherical microswimmer, yet the swimming efficiency can increase two-fold. More interestingly, the optimal ciliary motion of a concave microswimmer can be qualitatively different from that of the spherical microswimmer, and adding a constraint to the cilia length is found to improve, on average, the efficiency for such swimmers.

Data from direct numerical simulations of disperse bubbly flows in a vertical channel are used to study the effect of the bubbles on the carrier-phase turbulence. We developed a new method, based on an extension of the barycentric map approach, that allows us to quantify and visualize the anisotropy and componentiality of the flow at any scale. Using this we found that the bubbles significantly enhance anisotropy in the flow at all scales compared with the unladen case, and that for some bubble cases, very strong anisotropy persists down to the smallest scales of the flow. The strongest anisotropy observed was for the cases involving small bubbles. Concerning the energy transfer among the scales of the flow, our results indicate that for the bubble-laden cases, the energy transfer is from large to small scales, just as for the unladen case. However, there is evidence of an upscale transfer when considering the transfer of energy associated with particular components of the velocity field. Although the direction of the energy transfer is the same with and without the bubbles, the behaviour of the energy transfer is significantly modified by the bubbles, suggesting that the bubbles play a strong role in altering the activity of the nonlinear term in the flow. The skewness of the velocity increments also reveals a strong effect of the bubbles on the flow, changing both its sign and magnitude compared with the single-phase case. We also consider the normalized forms of the fourth-order structure functions, and the results reveal that the introduction of bubbles into the flow strongly enhances intermittency in the dissipation range, but suppresses it at larger scales. This strong enhancement of the dissipation-scale intermittency has significant implications for understanding how the bubbles might modify the mixing properties of turbulent flows.

Double-diffusive convection, in which a fluid is acted upon by two fields (such as temperature and salinity) that affect the density, has been widely studied in areas as diverse as the oceans and stellar atmospheres. Assuming classical Fickian diffusion for both heat and salt, the evolution of temperature and salinity are governed by parabolic advection–diffusion equations. In reality, there are small extra terms in these equations that render the equations hyperbolic (the Maxwell–Cattaneo effect). Although these corrections are nominally small, they represent a singular perturbation and hence can lead to significant effects when the underlying differences of salinity and temperature are large. In this paper, we investigate the linear stability of a double-diffusive fluid layer and show that amending Fick's law for the temperature, or the salinity, alone can lead to new modes of oscillation and to very large changes in the preferred wavelength of oscillatory convection at onset. In particular, the salt finger regime of classical double diffusion is here replaced by Maxwell–Cattaneo oscillations when the salt concentration is very high. The more complicated case when both laws are amended is left to a future paper, now in preparation.
