Fully resolved simulations of particles suspended in a sustained turbulent flow field are presented. To solve the Navier–Stokes equations a lattice-Boltzmann scheme was used. A spectral forcing scheme is applied to maintain turbulent conditions at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 61. The simulations contained between 2 and 10 vol % particles with a solid to fluid density ratio between 1.15 and 1.73. A lubrication force is used to account for subgrid hydrodynamic interaction between approaching particles. Results are presented on the influence of the particle phase on the turbulence spectrum and on particle collisions. Energy spectra of the simulations show that the particles generate fluid motion at length scales of the order of the particle size. This results in a strong increase in the rate of energy dissipation at these length scales and a decrease of kinetic energy at larger length scales.

Collisions due to uncorrelated particle motion are observed (primary collisions), and collision frequencies are in agreement with theory on inertial particle collisions. In addition to this, a large number of collisions at high frequencies is encountered. These secondary collisions are due to the correlated motion of particles resulting from short-range hydrodynamic interactions and spatial correlation of the turbulent velocity field at short distances. This view is supported by the distribution of relative particle velocities, the particle velocity correlation functions and the particle radial distribution function.

An approximate numerical method for calculating flow profiles in arteries is developed. The theory takes into account the nonlinear terms of the Navier-Stokes equations as well as the nonlinear behaviour and large deformations of the arterial wall. Through the locally measured values of the pressure, pressure gradient and pressure–radius function the velocity distribution and wall shear at a given location along the artery can be determined. The computed results agree well with the corresponding experimental data.

A nonlinear analysis, based on lubrication theory, is presented for the adjustment under surface tension of an initially uniform annular film of viscous fluid confined within a circular cylindrical pipe. The film surrounds a thread of another viscous fluid. Small axisymmetric interfacial disturbances of sufficiently long wavelength are found to grow, leading to the break-up of the initially continuous outer film into a number of isolated rings of fixed length on the pipe wall. The implications for the rupture of fluid threads surrounded by moderately thin films in confined geometries are discussed.

Turbulence in supersonic channel flow is studied using direct numerical simulation. The ability of outer and inner scalings to collapse profiles of turbulent stresses onto their incompressible counterparts is investigated. Such collapse is adequate with outer scaling when sufficiently far from the wall, but not with inner scaling. Compressibility effects on the turbulent stresses, their anisotropy, and their balance equations are identified. A reduction in the near-wall pressure–strain, found responsible for the changed Reynolds-stress profiles, is explained using a Green's-function-based analysis of the pressure field.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to investigate the three-dimensional stability of compressible flow over open cavities. A linear stability analysis is conducted to search for three-dimensional global instabilities of the two-dimensional mean flow for cavities that are homogeneous in the spanwise direction. The presence of such instabilities is reported for a range of flow conditions and cavity aspect ratios. For cavities of aspect ratio (length to depth) of 2 and 4, the three-dimensional mode has a spanwise wavelength of approximately one cavity depth and oscillates with a frequency about one order of magnitude lower than two-dimensional Rossiter (flow/acoustics) instabilities. A steady mode of smaller spanwise wavelength is also identified for square cavities. The linear results indicate that the instability is hydrodynamic (rather than acoustic) in nature and arises from a generic centrifugal instability mechanism associated with the mean recirculating vortical flow in the downstream part of the cavity. These three-dimensional instabilities are related to centrifugal instabilities previously reported in flows over backward-facing steps, lid-driven cavity flows and Couette flows. Results from three-dimensional simulations of the nonlinear compressible Navier–Stokes equations are also reported. The formation of oscillating (and, in some cases, steady) spanwise structures is observed inside the cavity. The spanwise wavelength and oscillation frequency of these structures agree with the linear analysis predictions. When present, the shear-layer (Rossiter) oscillations experience a low-frequency modulation that arises from nonlinear interactions with the three-dimensional mode. The results are consistent with observations of low-frequency modulations and spanwise structures in previous experimental and numerical studies on open cavity flows.

In an experimental investigation of the transient processes that occur when a single droplet of butane at the superheat limit vaporizes explosively, short-exposure photographs and fast-response pressure measurements have been used to construct a description of the complete explosion process. It is observed that only a single bubble forms within the drop during each explosion, and that the growth proceeds on a microsecond time scale. An interfacial instability driven by rapid evaporation has been observed on the surface of the bubbles. It is suggested that the Landau mechanism of instability, originally described in connection with the instability of laminar flames, also applies to rapid evaporation at the superheat limit.

The photographic evidence and the pressure data are used to estimate the evapora- tive mass flux across the liquid-vapour interface after the onset of instability. The rate of evaporation is shown to be two orders of magnitude greater than would be predicted by conventional bubble-growth theories that do not account for the effects of instability. An estimate of the mean density within the bubbles during the evaporative stage indicates that it is more than one half of the critical density of butane.

Additional interesting dynamical effects that are observed include a series of toroidal waves that form on the interface between the butane vapour and the external host liquid in the bubble column apparatus after the bubble has grown large enough to contact the outer edge of the drop, and violent oscillations of the bubble that occur on a millisecond time scale, after evaporation of the liquid butane is complete, that cause the disintegration of the bubble into a cloud of tiny bubbles by Rayleigh–Taylor instability.

Gravity currents, driven by horizontal differences in buoyancy, play a central role in fluid mechanics, with numerous important natural and industrial applications. The first quantitative, fluid-mechanical study of gravity currents, by von Kármán in 1940, was carried out before the birth of this Journal; the next important theoretical contribution was in 1968 by Brooke Benjamin, and appeared in this Journal more than a decade after its birth. The present paper reviews some of the material that has built on this auspicious start. Part of the fun and satisfaction of being involved in this field is that its development has been based on both theoretical and experimental contributions, which have at times been motivated and supported by field observations and measurements.

This study examines the influence of angle of attack of a square section cylinder on the cylinder’s flow-induced vibration, where the direction of the vibration is transverse to the oncoming flow. Our experiments, which traversed the velocity–angle of attack parameter space in considerable breadth and depth, show that a low-mass ratio body can undergo combinations of both vortex-induced vibration and galloping. When the body has an angle of attack that makes it symmetric to the flow, such as when it assumes the square or diamond orientation, the two mechanisms remain independent. However, when symmetry is lost we find a mixed mode response with a new branch of vortex-induced oscillations that exceeds the amplitudes resulting from the two phenomena independently. The oscillations of this higher branch have amplitudes larger than the ‘upper branch’ of vortex-induced vibrations and at half the frequency. For velocities above this resonant region, the frequency splits into two diverging branches. Analysis of the amplitude response reveals that the transition between galloping and vortex-induced vibrations occurs over a narrow range of angle of incidence. Despite the rich set of states found in the parameter space the vortex shedding modes remain very similar to those found previously in vortex-induced vibration.

With a sufficiently large impulse, a thermoacoustic system can reach self-sustained oscillations even when it is linearly stable, a process known as triggering. In this paper, a procedure is developed to find the lowest initial energy that can trigger self-sustained oscillations, as well as the corresponding initial state. This is known as the ‘most dangerous’ initial state. The procedure is based on adjoint looping of the nonlinear governing equations, combined with an optimization routine. It is developed for a simple model of a thermoacoustic system, the horizontal Rijke tube, and can be extended to more sophisticated thermoacoustic models. It is observed that the most dangerous initial state grows transiently towards an unstable periodic solution before growing to a stable periodic solution. The initial energy required to trigger these self-sustained oscillations is much lower than the energy of the oscillations themselves and slightly lower than the lowest energy on the unstable periodic solution. It is shown that this transient growth arises due to non-normality of the governing equations. This is analogous to the sequence of events observed in bypass transition to turbulence in fluid mechanical systems and has the same underlying cause. The most dangerous initial state is calculated as a function of the heat-release parameter. It is found that self-sustained oscillations can be reached over approximately half the linearly stable domain. Transient growth in real thermoacoustic systems is 105–106 times greater than that in this simple model. One practical conclusion is that, even in the linearly stable regime, it may take very little initial energy for a real thermoacoustic system to trigger to high-amplitude self-sustained oscillations through the mechanism described in this paper.

Numerical simulations of the collapse and spreading of granular columns onto a horizontal plane using the Contact Dynamics method are presented. The results are in agreement with previous experimental work. The final shape of the deposit appears to depend only on the initial aspect ratio a of the column. The normalized runout distance has a power-law dependence on the aspect ratio a, a dependence incompatible with a simple friction model. The dynamics of the collapse is shown to be mostly controlled by a free fall of the column. Energy dissipation at the base of the column can be described simply by a coefficient of restitution. Hence the energy available for the sideways flow is proportional to the initial potential energy $E_0$. The dissipation process within the sideways flow is approximated well by basal friction, unlike the behaviour of the runout distance. The proportion of mass ejected sideways is shown to play a determining role in the spreading process: as a increases, the same fraction of initial potential energy $E_0$ drives an increasing proportion of the initial mass against friction. This gives a possible explanation for the power-law dependence of the runout distance on a. We propose a new scaling for the runout distance that matches the data well, is compatible with a friction model, and provides a qualitative explanation of the column collapse.

We use three-dimensional simulations to study compressible convection in a rotating frame with magnetic fields and overshoot into surrounding stable layers. The, initially weak, magnetic field is amplified and maintained by dynamo action and becomes organized into flux tubes that are wrapped around vortex tubes. We also observe vortex buoyancy which causes upward flows in the cores of extended downdraughts. An analysis of the angles between various vector fields shows that there is a tendency for the magnetic field to be parallel or antiparallel to the vorticity vector, especially when the magnetic field is strong. The magnetic energy spectrum has a short inertial range with a slope compatible with k+1/3 during the early growth phase of the dynamo. During the saturated state the slope is compatible with k−1. A simple analysis based on various characteristic timescales and energy transfer rates highlights important qualitative ideas regarding the energy budget of hydromagnetic dynamos.

Turbulent plane jets are prototypical free shear flows of practical interest in propulsion, combustion and environmental flows. While considerable experimental research has been performed on planar jets, very few computational studies exist. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first computational study of spatially evolving three-dimensional planar turbulent jets utilizing direct numerical simulation. Jet growth rates as well as the mean velocity, mean scalar and Reynolds stress profiles compare well with experimental data. Coherency spectra, vorticity visualization and autospectra are obtained to identify inferred structures. The development of the initial shear layer instability, as well as the evolution into the jet column mode downstream is captured well.

The large- and small-scale anisotropies in the jet are discussed in detail. It is shown that, while the large scales in the flow field adjust slowly to variations in the local mean velocity gradients, the small scales adjust rapidly. Near the centreline of the jet, the small scales of turbulence are more isotropic. The mixing process is studied through analysis of the probability density functions of a passive scalar. Immediately after the rollup of vortical structures in the shear layers, the mixing process is dominated by large-scale engulfing of fluid. However, small-scale mixing dominates further downstream in the turbulent core of the self-similar region of the jet and a change from non-marching to marching PDFs is observed. Near the jet edges, the effects of large-scale engulfing of coflow fluid continue to influence the PDFs and non-marching type behaviour is observed.

Experiments have been performed to explore the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of thermals which ascend through the fluid environment above a heated horizontal surface. With water as the participating fluid, an electrochemical technique was employed which made the flow field visible and facilitated the direct observation of thermals. Measurements were also made of the fluid temperature above an active site of thermal generation.

As seen in flow field photographs, a thermal has a mushroom-like appearance, with a blunted nearly hemispherical cap. At a given heating rate, thermals are generated at fixed sites which are spaced more or less regularly along the span of the heated surface. At these sites, the generation of thermals is periodic in time, thereby validating a prediction of Howard. Both the spatial frequency of the sites and the rate of thermal production increase with increases in heating rate. The break-up Rayleigh number of the conduction layer is shown to be a constant (within the uncertainties of the experiment), which is in accord with Howard's phenomenological model.

Two-dimensional convection in a Boussinesq fluid confined between free boundaries is studied in a series of numerical experiments. Earlier calculations by Fromm and Veronis were limited to a maximum Rayleigh number R 50 times the critical value R, for linear instability. This range is extended to 1000Rc. Convection in water, with a Prandtl number p = 6·8, is systematically investigated, together with other models for Prandtl numbers between 0·01 and infinity. Two different modes of nonlinear behaviour are distinguished. For Prandtl numbers greater than unity there is a viscous regime in which the Nusselt number $N \approx 2(R/R_c)^{\frac{1}{3}}$, independently of p. The heat flux is a maximum for cells whose width is between 1·2 and 1·4 times the layer depth. This regime is found when $5 \leqslant R/R_c \lesssim p^{\frac{3}{2}}$. At higher Rayleigh numbers advection of vorticity becomes important and N ∞ R0·365. When p = 6·8 the heat flux is a maximum for square cells; steady convection is impossible for wider cells and finite amplitude oscillations appear instead, with periodic fluctuations of temperature and velocity in the layer. For p < 1 it is also found that N ∞ R0·365, with a constant of proportionality equal to 1·90 when p [Lt ] 1 and decreasing slowly as p is increased. The physical behaviour in these regimes is analysed and related to astrophysical convection.

Peristaltic flow in two-dimensional channels with sinusoidal waves is analysed. Under the assumption of creeping motion, the problem is formulated using the boundary integral method for Stokes flow. The effect of channel width, wave amplitude, phase shift, and mean pressure gradient on the streamline pattern and the properties of the flow is considered. The results are discussed with reference to various physiological and engineering processes. It is suggested that under the quasi-steady approximation, peristaltic flow with a varying mean pressure gradient offers an efficient method for molecular-convective transport.

We present a broad range of measurements of the angular orientation $\theta_0(t)$ of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection as a function of time. We used two cylindrical samples of different overall sizes, but each with its diameter nearly equal to its height. The fluid was water with a Prandtl number of 4.38. The time series $\theta_0(t)$ consisted of meanderings similar to a diffusive process, but in addition contained large and irregular spontaneous reorientation events through angles $\uDelta \theta$. We found that reorientations can occur by two distinct mechanisms. One consists of a rotation of the circulation plane without any major reduction of the circulation strength. The other involves a cessation of the circulation, followed by a restart in a randomly chosen new direction. Rotations occurred an order of magnitude more frequently than cessations. Rotations occurred with a monotonically decreasing probability distribution $p(\uDelta \theta)$, i.e. there was no dominant value of $\uDelta \theta$ and small $\uDelta \theta$ were more common than large ones. For cessations, $p(\uDelta\theta)$ was uniform, suggesting that information of $\theta_0(t)$ is lost during cessations. Both rotations and cessations have Poissonian statistics in time, and can occur at any $\theta_0$. The average azimuthal rotation rate $|\skew4\dot\theta|$ increased as the circulation strength of the LSC decreased. Tilting the sample relative to gravity significantly reduced the frequency of occurrence of both rotations and cessations.

We have applied the methods of classical statistical mechanics to derive the inviscid equilibrium states for one- and two-layer nonlinear quasi-geostrophic flows, with and without bottom topography and variable rotation rate. In the one-layer case without topography we recover the equilibrium energy spectrum given by Kraichnan (1967). In the two-layer case, we find that the internal radius of deformation constitutes an important dividing scale: at scales of motion larger than the radius of deformation the equilibrium flow is nearly barotropic, while at smaller scales the stream functions in the two layers are statistically uncorrelated. The equilibrium lower-layer flow is positively correlated with bottom topography (anticyclonic flow over seamounts) and the correlation extends to the upper layer at scales larger than the radius of deformation. We suggest that some of the statistical trends observed in non-equilibrium flows may be looked on as manifestations of the tendency for turbulent interactions to maximize the entropy of the system.

A small liquid drop can be kept bouncing on the surface of a bath of the same fluid for an unlimited time when this substrate oscillates vertically. With fluids of low viscosity the repeated collisions generate a surface wave at the bouncing frequency. The various dynamical regimes of the association of the drop with its wave are investigated first. The drop, usually a simple ‘bouncer’, undergoes a drift bifurcation when the forcing amplitude is increased. It thus becomes a ‘walker’ propagating at a constant velocity on the interface. This transition occurs just below the Faraday instability threshold, when the drop becomes a local emitter of a parametrically forced wave. A model of the particle–wave interaction accounts for this drift bifurcation. The self-organization of several identical bouncers is also investigated. At low forcing, bouncers form bound states or crystal-like aggregates. At larger forcing, the collisions between walkers reveal that their interaction can be either repulsive or attractive, depending on their distance apart. The attraction leads to the spontaneous formation of orbiting pairs, the possible orbit diameters forming a discrete set. A theoretical model of the non-local interaction resulting from the interference of the waves is given. The nature of the interaction is thus clarified and the various types of self-organization recovered.

Based on a set of approximate equations for long waves over an uneven bottom, numerical results show that as a solitary wave climbs a slope the rate of amplitude increase depends on the initial amplitude as well as on the slope. Results are also obtained for a solitary wave progressing over a slope onto a shelf. On the shelf a disintegration of the initial wave into a train of solitary waves of decreasing amplitude is found. Experimental evidence is also presented.
