We present an experimental investigation of the flow structure and vorticity field in the wake of a NACA-0012 airfoil pitching sinusoidally at small amplitude and high reduced frequencies. Molecular tagging velocimetry is used to quantify the characteristics of the vortex array (circulation, peak vorticity, core size, spatial arrangement) and its downstream evolution over the first chord length as a function of reduced frequency. The measured mean and fluctuating velocity fields are used to estimate the mean force on the airfoil and explore the connection between flow structure and thrust generation.

Results show that strong concentrated vortices form very rapidly within the first wavelength of oscillation and exhibit interesting dynamics that depend on oscillation frequency. With increasing reduced frequency the transverse alignment of the vortex array changes from an orientation corresponding to velocity deficit (wake profile) to one with velocity excess (reverse Kármán street with jet profile). It is found, however, that the switch in the vortex array orientation does not coincide with the condition for crossover from drag to thrust. The mean force is estimated from a more complete control volume analysis, which takes into account the streamwise velocity fluctuations and the pressure term. Results clearly show that neglecting these terms can lead to a large overestimation of the mean force in strongly fluctuating velocity fields that are characteristic of airfoils executing highly unsteady motions. Our measurements show a decrease in the peak vorticity, as the vortices convect downstream, by an amount that is more than can be attributed to viscous diffusion. It is found that the presence of small levels of axial velocity gradients within the vortex cores, levels that can be difficult to measure experimentally, can lead to a measurable decrease in the peak vorticity even at the centre of the flow facility in a flow that is expected to be primarily two-dimensional.

A method for the theoretical determination of the wall shear stress under impinging jets of various configurations is presented. Axisymmetric and two-dimensional incompressible jets of a wide range of Reynolds numbers and jet heights are considered. Theoretical predictions from this approach are compared with available wall shear stress measurements. These data are critically evaluated based on the method of measurement and its applicability to the boundary layer under consideration. It was found that impingement-region wall shear stress measurements using the electrochemical method in submerged impinging liquid jets provide the greatest accuracy of any indirect method. A unique wall shear stress measurement technique, based on observing the removal of monosized spheres from well-characterized surfaces, was used to confirm the impinging jet analysis presented for gas jets. The technique was also used to determine an empirical relation describing the rise in wall shear stress due to compressibility effects in impinging high-velocity jets.

The decay of two-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic, incompressible turbulence is investigated both by means of numerical simulation (in spectral as well as in grid-point form), and theoretically by use of the direct-interaction approximation and the test-field model. The calculations cover the range of Reynolds numbers 50 ≤ RL ≤ 100. Comparison of spectral methods with finite-difference methods shows that one of the former with a given resolution is equivalent in accuracy to one of the latter with twice the resolution. The numerical simulations at the larger Reynolds numbers suggest that earlier reported simulations cannot be used in testing inertial-range theories. However, the large-scale features of the flow field appear to be remarkably independent of Reynolds number.

The direct-interaction approximation is in satisfactory agreement with simulations in the energy-containing range, but grossly underestimates enstrophy transfer at high wavenumbers. The latter failing is traced to an inability to distinguish between convection and intrinsic distortion of small parcels of fluid. The test-field model on the other hand appears to be in excellent agreement with simulations at all wavenumbers, and for all Reynolds numbers investigated.

A stabilizing gradient of solute inhibits the onset of convection in a fluid which is subjected to an adverse temperature gradient. Furthermore, the onset of instability may occur as an oscillatory motion because of the stabilizing effect of the solute. These results are obtained from linear stability theory which is reviewed briefly in the following paper before finite-amplitude results for two-dimensional flows are considered. It is found that a finite-amplitude instability may occur first for fluids with a Prandtl number somewhat smaller than unity. When the Prandtl number is equal to unity or greater, instability first sets in as an oscillatory motion which subsequently becomes unstable to disturbances which lead to steady, convecting cellular motions with larger heat flux. A solute Rayleigh number, Rs, is defined with the stabilizing solute gradient replacing the destabilizing temperature gradient in the thermal Rayleigh number. When Rs is large compared with the critical Rayleigh number of ordinary Bénard convection, the value of the Rayleigh number at which instability to finite-amplitude steady modes can set in approaches the value of Rs. Hence, asymptotically this type of instability is established when the fluid is marginally stratified. Also, as Rs → ∞ an effective diffusion coefficient, Kρ, is defined as the ratio of the vertical density flux to the density gradient evaluated at the boundary and it is found that κρ = √(κκs) where κ, κs are the diffusion coefficients for temperature and solute respectively. A study is made of the oscillatory behaviour of the fluid when the oscillations have finite amplitudes; the periods of the oscillations are found to increase with amplitude. The horizontally averaged density gradients change sign with height in the oscillating flows. Stably stratified fluid exists near the boundaries and unstably stratified fluid occupies the mid-regions for most of the oscillatory cycle. Thus the step-like behaviour of the density field which has been observed experimentally for time-dependent flows is encountered here numerically.

Goldstein (1931) has considered the stability of a shear layer within which the velocity and the density vary linearly and outside which they are constant. Rayleigh (1880, 1887) had found that the corresponding, homogeneous shear flow is unstable in and only in a finite band of wave-numbers. Goldstein concluded that a small density gradient renders the flow unstable for all wave-numbers. This conclusion appears to depend on the acceptance of all possible branches of a multi-valued eigenvalue equation, and it is shown that the principal branch of this eigenvalue equation yields one and only one unstable mode if and only if the wave-number lies in a band that decreases from Rayleigh's band to zero as the Richardson number increases from 0 to ¼.

Large-eddy simulations of a subsonic three-dimensional cavity flow with self-sustaining oscillations are carried out for a Reynolds number based on the length of the cavity equal to $7\,{\times}\,10^6$. Meticulous comparisons with available experimental data corresponding to the same configuration demonstrate a high level of accuracy. Special attention is paid to the mixing layer that develops over the cavity and two different zones are identified. The first one is dominated by Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, and the linear as well as quadratic energy transfers leading to the filling of velocity spectra are described. The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability also appears to be forced near the origin of the layer, and it is postulated that the small recirculation bubble located in this area is responsible for the forcing. Downstream of the first zone and up to the vicinity of the aft wall, the layer behaves very similarly to a free mixing layer by exhibiting a linear spreading. An influence of the recirculating flow inside the cavity upon the growth of the layer is nevertheless observed at downstream stations. Analysis of the pressure on the floor of the cavity reveals that the self-sustaining oscillation-related pressure modes (Rossiter modes) are independent of their spanwise location inside the cavity. On the contrary, Rossiter modes exhibit streamwise modulations and it is demonstrated that a very simple two-wave model is able to reproduce the spatial shape of the modes. Nonlinear interactions between Rossiter modes are encountered, as well as nonlinear interactions with low-frequency components. A joint time–frequency analysis shows a temporal modulation of the Rossiter mode levels at similar low frequencies, resulting in a special form of intermittency with competitive energy exchanges between modes.

Three-dimensional numerical solutions have been obtained for steady, linear shear flow past a fixed, heated spherical particle over a wide range of Reynolds number (0.1 [les ] R [les ] 100) and dimensionless shear rates (0.005 [les ] α [les ] 0.4). The results indicate that at a fixed shear rate, the dimensionless lift coefficient is approximately constant over a wide range of intermediate Reynolds numbers, and the drag coefficient also remains constant when normalized by the known values of drag for a sphere in uniform flow. At lower values of the Reynolds number, the lift and drag coefficients increase sharply with decreasing R, with the lift coefficient being directly proportional to R−½. For the range of shear rates studied here, the rate of heat transfer to the particle surface was found to depend only on the Reynolds number, that is, it was insensitive to the shear rate. The dimensionless rate of heat transfer, the Nussel number Nu, was seen to increase monotonically with R.

An investigation was undertaken to improve our understanding of low-Reynolds-number turbulent boundary layers flowing over a smooth flat surface in nominally zero pressure gradients. In practice, such flows generally occur in close proximity to a tripping device and, though it was known that the flows are affected by the actual low value of the Reynolds number, it was realized that they may also be affected by the type of tripping device used and variations in free-stream velocity for a given device. Consequently, the experimental programme was devised to investigate systematically the effects of each of these three factors independently. Three different types of device were chosen: a wire, distributed grit and cylindrical pins. Mean-flow, broadband-turbulence and spectral measurements were taken, mostly for values of Rθ varying between about 715 and about 2810. It was found that the mean-flow and broadband-turbulence data showed variations with Rθ, as expected. Spectra were plotted using scaling given by Perry, Henbest & Chong (1986) and were compared with their models which were developed for high-Reynolds-number flows. For the turbulent wall region, spectra showed reasonably good agreement with their model. For the fully turbulent region, spectra did show some appreciable deviations from their model, owing to low-Reynolds-number effects. Mean-flow profiles, broadband-turbulence profiles and spectra were found to be affected very little by the type of device used for Rθ ≈ 1020 and above, indicating an absence of dependence on flow history for this Rθ range. These types of measurements were also compared at both Rθ ≈ 1020 and Rθ ≈ 2175 to see if they were dependent on how Rθ was formed (i.e. the combination of velocity and momentum thickness used to determine Rθ). There were noticeable differences for Rθ ≈ 1020, but these differences were only convincing for the pins, and there was a general overall improvement in agreement for Rθ ≈ 2175.

Research into high-Reynolds-number turbulent boundary layers in recent years has brought about a renewed interest in the larger-scale structures. It is now known that these structures emerge more prominently in the outer region not only due to increased Reynolds number (Metzger & Klewicki, Phys. Fluids, vol. 13(3), 2001, pp. 692–701; Hutchins & Marusic, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 579, 2007, pp. 1–28), but also when a boundary layer is exposed to an adverse pressure gradient (Bradshaw, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 29, 1967, pp. 625–645; Lee & Sung, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 639, 2009, pp. 101–131). The latter case has not received as much attention in the literature. As such, this work investigates the modification of the large-scale features of boundary layers subjected to zero, adverse and favourable pressure gradients. It is first shown that the mean velocities, turbulence intensities and turbulence production are significantly different in the outer region across the three cases. Spectral and scale decomposition analyses confirm that the large scales are more energized throughout the entire adverse pressure gradient boundary layer, especially in the outer region. Although more energetic, there is a similar spectral distribution of energy in the wake region, implying the geometrical structure of the outer layer remains universal in all cases. Comparisons are also made of the amplitude modulation of small scales by the large-scale motions for the three pressure gradient cases. The wall-normal location of the zero-crossing of small-scale amplitude modulation is found to increase with increasing pressure gradient, yet this location continues to coincide with the large-scale energetic peak wall-normal location (as has been observed in zero pressure gradient boundary layers). The amplitude modulation effect is found to increase as pressure gradient is increased from favourable to adverse.

The stability of short-wave displacement perturbations on a vortex filament of constant vorticity in a weak externally imposed strain field is considered. The circular cross-section of the vortex filament in this straining flow field becomes elliptical. It is found that instability of short waves on this strained vortex can occur only for wavelengths and frequencies at the intersection points of the dispersion curves for an isolated vortex. Numerical results show that the vortex is stable at some of these points and unstable at others. The vortex is unstable at wavelengths for which ω = 0, thus giving some support to the instability mechanism for the vortex ring proposed recently by Widnall, Bliss & Tsai (1974). The growth rate is calculated by linear stability theory. The previous work of Crow (1970) and Moore & Saffman (1971) dealing with long-wave instabilities is discussed as is the very recent work of Moore & Saffman (1975).

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are presented of three-dimensional, Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) between two incompressible, miscible fluids, with a 3:1 density ratio. Periodic boundary conditions are imposed in the horizontal directions of a rectangular domain, with no-slip top and bottom walls. Solutions are obtained for the Navier–Stokes equations, augmented by a species transport-diffusion equation, with various initial perturbations. The DNS achieved outer-scale Reynolds numbers, based on mixing-zone height and its rate of growth, in excess of 3000. Initial growth is diffusive and independent of the initial perturbations. The onset of nonlinear growth is not predicted by available linear-stability theory. Following the diffusive-growth stage, growth rates are found to depend on the initial perturbations, up to the end of the simulations. Mixing is found to be even more sensitive to initial conditions than growth rates. Taylor microscales and Reynolds numbers are anisotropic throughout the simulations. Improved collapse of many statistics is achieved if the height of the mixing zone, rather than time, is used as the scaling or progress variable. Mixing has dynamical consequences for this flow, since it is driven by the action of the imposed acceleration field on local density differences.

We present a new theoretical model of ‘late-time’ phenomena related to the interaction of a planar shock with a local, discrete inhomogeneity in an ambient gas. The term ‘late-time’ applies to the evolution of the inhomogeneity and the flow field after interaction with the incident shock has ceased. Observations of a shock propagating through a bubble or a spherical flame have exhibited or implied the formation of vortex structures and have showed continual distortion of the bubble or flame. Our theory shows that this is due to the generation of long-lived vorticity at the edge of the discrete inhomogeneity. The vorticity interacts with itself through the medium of the fluid, and, depending on the geometry of the discrete inhomogeneity, can roll up into vortex filaments or vortex rings. To verify and amplify this theoretical description, we use numerical solutions of the fluid equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy to study the interaction of a weak shock with a cylindrical or spherical bubble. The simulated bubble has either a higher or lower density than the ambient gas. In this way, the calculations provide insights into the effects of both geometry and distortion of the local sound speed. The Mach number of the shock is 1.2, the ambient gas is air, and the pressure is 1 atmosphere. Because of the simple geometry of each bubble, the vorticity generated at the boundary rolls up into a vortex filament pair (cylindrical bubble) or a vortex ring (spherical bubble). The structural features and timescales of the phenomena observed in the calculations agree closely with recent experiments of Haas & Sturtevant, in which helium and Freon bubbles were used to provide the local departures from ambient density. The discussion of results includes a survey of alternative numerical methods, sources of uncertainty in velocities of interfaces or structures, as derived from the laboratory and numerical experiments, and the relationship of our analysis to other theories.

A new stochastic model for the motion of particle pairs in isotropic high-Reynolds-number turbulence is proposed. The model is three-dimensional and its formulation takes account of recent improvements in the understanding of one-particle models. In particular the model is designed so that if the particle pairs are initially well mixed in the fluid, they will remain so. In contrast to previous models, the new model leads to a prediction for the particle separation probability density function which is in qualitative agreement with inertial subrange theory. The values of concentration variance from the model show encouraging agreement with experimental data. The model results suggest that, at large times, the intensity of concentration fluctuations (i.e. standard deviation of concentration divided by mean concentration) tends to zero in stationary conditions and to a constant in decaying turbulence.

The objective of this work is to develop techniques to predict the results of experiments involving chaotic dispersion of passive tracers in two-dimensional low Reynolds number flows. We present the design of a flow apparatus which allows the unobstructed observation of the entire flow region. Whenever possible we compare the experimental results with those of computations. Conventional tracking of the boundaries of the tracer is inefficient and works well only for low stretches (order 102 at most). However, most mixing experiments involve extremely large perturbations from steady flow since this is where the best mixing occurs. The best prediction of widespread mixing and large stretching (order 104–105) is provided by lineal stretching plots; surprisingly the technique also works for relatively low numbers of periods (as low as 2 or 3). The second best prediction is provided by a combination of low-order unstable manifolds – which indicate where the tracer goes, especially for short times – and the eigendirections of low-order hyperbolic periodic points – which indicate the alignment of striations in the flow. On the other hand, Poincaré sections provide only a gross picture of the spreading: they can be used primarily to detect what regions are inaccessible to the dye. Comparison of computations and experiments invariably reveals that bifurcations within islands have little impact in the mixing process.

The influence of an external flow velocity on the instability of a circular jet has been investigated by means of the inviscid linearized stability theory. The instability properties of spatially growing axisymmetric and first-order azimuthal disturbances show that the external flow inhibits the instability of the circular jet, but increases the unstable frequency range. Similarity considerations lead to the result that, in a first approximation, the disturbed flow field is independent of the external flow velocity, if the axial co-ordinate is contracted by a suitably chosen stretching factor and if the disturbance frequency is reduced by the same factor. It is concluded that the large-scale structure of jet turbulence is modified in the same manner by the external flow.

The study analyses the cellular reaction zone structure of unstable methane–oxygen detonations, which are characterized by large hydrodynamic fluctuations and unreacted pockets with a fine structure. Complementary series of experiments and numerical simulations are presented, which illustrate the important role of hydrodynamic instabilities and diffusive phenomena in dictating the global reaction rate in detonations. The quantitative comparison between experiment and numerics also permits identification of the current limitations of numerical simulations in capturing these effects. Simulations are also performed for parameters corresponding to weakly unstable cellular detonations, which are used for comparison and validation. The numerical and experimental results are used to guide the formulation of a stochastic steady one-dimensional representation for such detonation waves. The numerically obtained flow fields were Favre-averaged in time and space. The resulting one-dimensional profiles for the mean values and fluctuations reveal the two important length scales, the first being associated with the chemical exothermicity and the second (the ‘hydrodynamic thickness’) with the slower dissipation of the hydrodynamic fluctuations, which govern the location of the average sonic surface. This second length scale is found to be much longer than that predicted by one-dimensional reaction zone calculations.

Laser-induced cavitation bubbles near a curved rigid boundary are observed experimentally using high-speed photography. An image theory is applied to obtain information on global bubble motion while a boundary integral method is employed to gain a more detailed understanding of the behaviour of a liquid jet that threads a collapsing bubble, creating a toroidal bubble. Comparisons between the theory and experiment show that when a comparable sized bubble is located near a rigid boundary the bubble motion is significantly influenced by the surface curvature of the boundary, which is characterized by a parameter ζ, giving convex walls for ζ < 1, concave walls for ζ > 1 and a flat wall when ζ = 1. If a boundary is slightly concave, the most pronounced migration occurs at the first bubble collapse. The velocity of a liquid jet impacting on the far side of the bubble surface tends to increase with decreasing parameter ζ. In the case of a convex boundary, the jet velocity is larger than that generated in the flat boundary case. Although the situation considered here is restricted to axisymmetric motion without mean flow, this result suggests that higher pressures can occur when cavitation bubbles collapse near a non-flat boundary. Bubble separation, including the pinch-off phenomenon, is observed in the final stage of the collapse of a bubble, with the oblate shape at its maximum volume attached to the surface of a convex boundary, followed by bubble splitting which is responsible for further bubble proliferation.

Vertical forcing of a fluid layer leads to standing waves by means of a subharmonic instability. When the driving amplitude and frequency are chosen to be near the intersection of the stability boundaries of two nearly degenerate modes, we find that they can compete with each other to produce either periodic or chaotic motion on a slow timescale. We utilize digital image-processing methods to determine the time-dependent amplitudes of the competing modes, and local-sampling techniques to study the onset of chaos in some detail. Reconstruction of the attractors in phase space shows that in the chaotic regime the dimension of the attractor is fractional and at least one Lyapunov exponent is positive. The evidence suggests that a theory incorporating four coupled slow variables will be sufficient to account for the mode competition.

It has been suggested that hairpin vortices are a major sustaining flow structure involved in the perpetuation of turbulent boundary layers, although their origin within the boundary layer is unclear. One hypothesis is that hairpin structures are formed by the breakdown of the low-speed streak structures which develop adjacent to the surface beneath turbulent boundary layers. To examine this hypothesis, a water-channel study has been done which utilizes injection through surface slots in a flat plate to create artificial low-speed streak-type regions beneath a laminar boundary layer. Under appropriate conditions, these synthesized low-speed streaks develop a three-dimensional, shear-layer instability which breaks down to form a hairpin-vortex street. Employing both flow visualization and anemometry measurements, the characteristics of these hairpin structures and the parameters influencing their generation have been examined. The hairpin streets were determined to develop in a very periodic and repeatable manner within a definite range of flow parameters. Detailed flow patterns obtained using dye and hydrogen bubbles, both individually and collectively, indicate a remarkable similarity with previously observed patterns in the near-wall region of turbulent boundary layers. In addition, the development of the hairpin structures is observed to be quite sensitive to external forcing, as well as exhibiting a tendency for organized development of larger, more complex structures through a pairing-type process. Velocity measurements indicate the initial presence of strong inflexional profiles which evolve rapidly to velocity and turbulence-intensity profiles commensurate with those associated with turbulent boundary layers, but which do not exhibit the marked spreading associated with turbulence.

Fully resolved simulations of particles suspended in a sustained turbulent flow field are presented. To solve the Navier–Stokes equations a lattice-Boltzmann scheme was used. A spectral forcing scheme is applied to maintain turbulent conditions at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 61. The simulations contained between 2 and 10 vol % particles with a solid to fluid density ratio between 1.15 and 1.73. A lubrication force is used to account for subgrid hydrodynamic interaction between approaching particles. Results are presented on the influence of the particle phase on the turbulence spectrum and on particle collisions. Energy spectra of the simulations show that the particles generate fluid motion at length scales of the order of the particle size. This results in a strong increase in the rate of energy dissipation at these length scales and a decrease of kinetic energy at larger length scales.

Collisions due to uncorrelated particle motion are observed (primary collisions), and collision frequencies are in agreement with theory on inertial particle collisions. In addition to this, a large number of collisions at high frequencies is encountered. These secondary collisions are due to the correlated motion of particles resulting from short-range hydrodynamic interactions and spatial correlation of the turbulent velocity field at short distances. This view is supported by the distribution of relative particle velocities, the particle velocity correlation functions and the particle radial distribution function.
