An investigation into the existence of hairpin vortices in turbulent channel flow is conducted using a database generated by the large-eddy simulation technique. It is shown that away from the wall the distribution of the inclination angle of vorticity vector gains its maximum at about 45° to the wall. Two-point correlations of velocity and vorticity fluctuations strongly support a flow model consisting of vortical structures inclined at 45° to the wall. The instantaneous vorticity vectors plotted in planes inclined at 45° show that the flow contains an appreciable number of hairpins. Vortex lines are used to display the three-dimensional structure of hairpins, which are shown to be generated from deformation (or roll-up) of sheets of transverse vorticity.

Earlier papers have described a technique whereby a stratified shear flow may be produced under controlled conditions in the laboratory. A comparison between the experiments and theory is made here for small-amplitude unstable disturbances in an accelerating stratified free shear layer at the diffuse interface between layers of brine and water. In the early stages of the observed growth of the instability, which takes the form of growing waves, three measurable quantities can be compared with predicted values: the wavelength of the small amplitude waves, the time, which determines the flow conditions, and the growth rates of the waves. Some observations of the development of the disturbances to finite amplitude, the transition to turbulence and the resulting turbulence are reported.

The instant of transition to cellularity of centrally ignited, outwardly propagating spherical flames in a reactive environment of fuelx–oxidizer mixture, at atmospheric and elevated pressures, was experimentally determined using high-speed schlieren imaging and subsequently interpreted on the basis of hydrodynamic and diffusional–thermal instabilities. Experimental results show that the transition Péclet number, Pec = RcℓL, assumes an almost constant value for the near-equidiffusive acetylene flames with wide ranges in the mixture stoichiometry, oxygen concentration and pressure, where Rc is the flame radius at transition and ℓL the laminar flame thickness. However, for the non-equidiffusive hydrogen and propane flames, Pec respectively increases and decreases somewhat linearly with the mixture equivalence ratio. Evaluation of Pec using previous theory shows complete qualitative agreement and satisfactory quantitative agreement, demonstrating the insensitivity of Pec to all system parameters for equidiffusive mixtures, and the dominance of the Markstein number, Ze(Le – 1), in destabilization for non-equidiffusive mixtures, where Ze is the Zel'dovich number and Le the Lewis number. The importance of using locally evaluated values of ℓL, Ze and Le, extracted from either computationally simulated one-dimensional flame structure with detailed chemistry and transport, or experimentally determined response of stretched flames, in the evaluation of Pec is emphasized.

Crossflow-dominated swept-wing boundary layers are known to undergo a highly nonlinear transition process. In low-disturbance environments, the primary instability of these flows consists mainly of stationary streamwise vortices that modify the mean velocity field and hence the stability characteristics of the boundary layer. The result is amplitude saturation of the dominant stationary mode and strong spanwise modulation of the unsteady modes. Breakdown is not caused by the primary instability but instead by a high-frequency secondary instability of the shear layers of the distorted mean flow. The secondary instability has been observed in several previous experiments and several computational models for its behaviour exist. None of the experiments has been sufficiently detailed to allow either model validation or transition correlation. The present experiment conducted using a 45° swept wing in the low-disturbance Arizona State University Unsteady Wind Tunnel addresses the secondary instability in a detailed fashion under a variety of conditions. The results reveal that this instability is active in the breakdown of all cases investigated, and furthermore, it appears to be well-described by the computational models.

We develop a phase-field multiphase lattice Boltzmann model to systematically investigate the dynamic behaviour of a droplet passing through a microfluidic T-junction, especially focusing on the non-breakup of the droplet. Detailed information on the breakup and non-breakup is presented, together with the quantitative evolutions of driving and resistance forces as well as the droplet deformation characteristics involved. Through comparisons between cases of non-breakup and breakup, we find that the appearance of tunnels (the lubricating film between droplet and channel walls) provides a precondition for the final non-breakup of droplets, which slows down the droplet deformation rate and even induces non-breakup. The vortex flow formed inside droplets plays an important role in determining whether they break up or not. In particular, when the strength of vortex flow exceeds a critical value, a droplet can no longer break up. Additionally, more effort has been devoted to investigating the effects of viscosity ratio between disperse and continuous phases and width ratio between branch and main channels on droplet dynamic behaviours. It is found that a large droplet viscosity results in a small velocity gradient in a droplet, which restricts vortex generation and thus produces lower deformation resistance. Consequently, it is easier to break up a droplet with larger viscosity. Our work also reveals that a droplet in small branch channels tends to obstruct the channels and have small vortex flows, which induces easier breakup too. Eventually, several phase diagrams for droplet flow patterns are provided, and the corresponding power-law correlations ($l_{0}/w=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}Ca^{b}$, where $l_{0}/w$ is dimensionless initial droplet length and $Ca$ is capillary number) are fitted to describe the boundaries between different flow patterns.

Incompressible moderate-Reynolds-number flow in periodically grooved channels is investigated by direct numerical simulation using the spectral element method. For Reynolds numbers less than a critical value Rc the flow is found to approach a stable steady state, comprising an ‘outer’ channel flow, a shear layer at the groove lip, and a weak re-circulating vortex in the groove proper. The linear stability of this flow is then analysed, and it is found that the least stable modes closely resemble Tollmien–Schlichting channel waves, forced by Kelvin–Helmholtz shear-layer instability at the cavity edge. A theory for frequency prediction based on the Orr–Sommerfeld dispersion relation is presented, and verified by variation of the geometric parameters of the problem. The accuracy of the theory, and the fact that it predicts many qualitative features of low-speed groove experiments, suggests that the frequency-selection process in these flows is largely governed by the outer, more stable flow (here a channel), in contrast to most current theories based solely on shear-layer considerations. The instability of the linear mode for R > Rc is shown to result in self-sustained flow oscillations (at frequencies only slightly shifted from the originating linear modes), which again resemble (finite-amplitude) Tollmien-Schlichting modes driven by an unstable groove vortex sheet. Analysis of the amplitude dependence of the oscillations on degree of criticality reveals the transition to oscillatory flow to be a regular Hopf bifurcation.

Crossflow-vortex-induced laminar breakdown in a three-dimensional flat-plate boundary-layer flow is investigated in detail by means of spatial direct numerical simulations. The base flow is generic for an infinite swept wing, with decreasing favourable chordwise pressure gradient. First, the downstream growth and nonlinear saturation states initiated by a crossflow-vortex-mode packet as well as by single crossflow-vortex modes with various spanwise wavenumbers are simulated. Second, the secondary instability of the flow induced by the saturated crossflow vortices is scrutinized, clearly indicating the convective nature of the secondary instability and strengthening knowledge of the conditions for its onset. Emphasis is on the effect of crossflow-vortex-mode packets and of the spanwise vortex spacing on the secondary stability properties of the saturation states. Saturated uniform crossflow vortices initiated by single crossflow-vortex modes turn out to be less unstable than vortices initiated by a packet of vortex modes, and closely spaced saturated vortices are even stable. Third, we investigate the transition control strategy of upstream flow deformation by appropriate steady nonlinear vortex modes as applied in wind tunnel experiments at the Arizona State University. A significant transition delay is shown in the base flow considered here, and the underlying mechanisms are specified.

The low-frequency dynamics of the shock-induced separation region in a Mach 2 compression ramp interaction is investigated by performing high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV) measurements, at a rate of 6kHz, in a streamwise–spanwise plane. The HSPIV measurements made in the upstream turbulent boundary layer indicate the presence of spanwise strips of elongated regions of uniform streamwise velocity that extend to lengths greater than 30δ, validating previous results based on planar laser scattering measurements obtained by Ganapathisubramani, Clemens & Dolling (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 585, 2007, p. 369). At a wall normal-location of y/δ=0.2, a surrogate for separation based on a velocity threshold is found to fluctuate over a streamwise range of ±1.2δ, consistent with previous studies. The amplitude of unsteadiness has contributions from at least two sources that are related to the incoming boundary layer. First, the velocity threshold based surrogate separation line exhibits large-scale undulations along the spanwise direction that conform to the passage of elongated low- and high-speed regions in the upstream boundary layer. This motion is classified as the local influence of the upstream boundary layer. Second, the spanwise-averaged surrogate separation is found to respond to the overall change in streamwise velocity in the incoming boundary layer and is classified as the global influence of the upstream boundary layer. However, this global influence includes the contributions from the elongated low- and high-speed regions. Preliminary findings based on statistical analysis suggest that the local influence contributes nearly 50% more than the global influence. Regardless, the low-frequency unsteadiness of the separation-region can be attributed to the local and global influences of the incoming boundary layer.

We present experimental results on the role of flexibility and aspect ratio in bio-inspired aquatic propulsion. Direct thrust and power measurements are used to determine the propulsive efficiency of flexible panels undergoing a leading-edge pitching motion. We find that flexible panels can give a significant amplification of thrust production of $\mathscr{O}(100{\unicode{x2013}} 200\hspace{0.167em} \% )$ and propulsive efficiency of $\mathscr{O}(100\hspace{0.167em} \% )$ when compared to rigid panels. The data highlight that the global maximum in propulsive efficiency across a range of panel flexibilities is achieved when two conditions are simultaneously satisfied: (i) the oscillation of the panel yields a Strouhal number in the optimal range ($0. 25\lt \mathit{St}\lt 0. 35$) predicted by Triantafyllou, Triantafyllou & Grosenbaugh (J. Fluid Struct., vol. 7, 1993, pp. 205–224); and (ii) this frequency of motion is tuned to the structural resonant frequency of the panel. In addition, new scaling laws for the thrust production and power input to the fluid are derived for the rigid and flexible panels. It is found that the dominant forces are the characteristic elastic force and the characteristic fluid force. In the flexible regime the data scale using the characteristic elastic force and in the rigid limit the data scale using the characteristic fluid force.

A calculation procedure for three-dimensional parabolic flows is applied to predict the velocity and temperature fields in helically coiled pipes. The curvature produces a secondary flow and causes departures from the symmetric velocity profile of Poiseuille flow. Predictions are presented of flow and heat transfer in the developing and fully developed regions. Comparisons of the developing and fully developed velocity profiles with experimental data exhibit good agreement. The development of the wall temperature for the case of axially uniform heat flux with an isothermal periphery has been compared with experimental data and the agreement is good. Predictions for fully developed temperature profiles and heat-transfer coefficients also exhibit good agreement with experimental data. Effects of the Dean number on the friction factor and heat transfer are presented.

During the collapse of an initially spherical cavitation bubble near a rigid wall, a reentrant jet forms from the side of the bubble farthest from the wall. This re-entrant jet impacts and penetrates the bubble surface closest to the wall during the final stage of the collapse. In the present paper, this phenomenon is modelled with potential flow theory, and a numerical approach based on conventional and hypersingular boundary integral equations is presented. The method allows for the continuous simulation of the bubble motion from growth to collapse and the impact and penetration of the reentrant jet. The numerical investigations show that during penetration the bubble surface is transformed to a ring bubble that is smoothly attached to a vortex sheet. The velocity of the tip of the re-entrant jet is always directed toward the wall during penetration with a speed less than its speed before impact. A high-pressure region is created around the penetration interface. Theoretical analysis and numerical results show that the liquid-liquid impact causes a loss in the kinetic energy of the flow field. Variations in the initial distance from the bubble centre to the wall are found to cause large changes in the details of the flow field. No existing experimental data are available to make a direct comparison with the numerical predictions. However, the results obtained in this study agree qualitatively with experimental observations.

Nonlinear stability of a model swept-wing boundary layer, subject to crossflow instability, is investigated by numerically solving the governing partial differential equations. The three-dimensional boundary layer is unstable to both stationary and travelling crossflow disturbances. Nonlinear calculations have been carried out for stationary vortices and the computed wall vorticity pattern results in streamwise streaks which resemble quite well the surface oil-flow visualizations in swept-wing experiments. Other features of the stationary vortex development (half-mushroom structure, inflected velocity profiles, vortex doubling, etc.) are also captured in these calculations. Nonlinear interaction of the stationary and travelling waves is also studied. When initial amplitude of the stationary vortex is larger than the travelling mode, the stationary vortex dominates most of the downstream development. When the two modes have the same initial amplitude, the travelling mode dominates the downstream development owing to its higher growth rate. It is also found that, prior to laminar/turbulent transition, the three-dimensional boundary layer is subject to a high-frequency secondary instability, which is in agreement with the experiments of Poll (1985) and Kohama, Saric & Hoos (1991). The frequency of this secondary instability, which resides on top of the stationary crossflow vortex, is an order of magnitude higher than the frequency of the most-amplified travelling crossflow mode.

Highly resolved three-dimensional and two-dimensional simulations of gravity currents in planar and cylindrical configurations are presented. The volume of release of the heavy fluid is varied and the different phases of spreading, namely acceleration, slumping, inertial and viscous phases, are studied. The incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved assuming that the Boussinesq approximation is valid for small density difference. The simulations are performed for three different Reynolds numbers (Re): 895, 3450 and 8950 (this particular choice corresponds to values of Grashof number: 105, 1.5 × 106 and 107, respectively). Following their sudden release, the gravity currents are observed to go through an acceleration phase in which the maximum front velocity is reached. As the interface of the current rolls up, the front velocity slightly decreases from the maximum and levels off to a nearly constant value. At higher Re, three-dimensional disturbances grow rapidly and the currents become strongly turbulent. In contrast, in two-dimensional simulations, the rolled-up vortices remain coherent and very strong. Depending on the initial Re of the flow and on the size of the release, the current may transition from the slumping to the inertial phase, or directly to the viscous phase without an inertial phase. New criteria for the critical Re are introduced for the development of the inertial phase. Once the flow transitions to the inertial or viscous phase, it becomes fully three-dimensional. During these phases of spreading, two-dimensional approximations underpredict the front location and velocity. The enhanced vortex coherence of the two-dimensional simulations leads to strong vortex interaction and results in spurious strong time variations of the front velocity. The structure and dynamics of the three-dimensional currents are in good agreement with previously reported numerical and experimental observations.

… in hydrodynamic turbulence … the fate of vortices extending in the direction of motion is of great importance (J. M. Burgers 1948).

We examine an elementary model of the dynamics of streamwise vorticity in a plane mixing layer. We assume that the vorticity is unidirectional and subjected to a two-dimensional spatially uniform strain, positive along the direction of vorticity. The equations of motion are solved numerically with initial conditions corresponding to a strain-viscous-diffusion balance for a layer with a sinusoidal variation of vorticity. The numerical results are interpreted physically and compared to those of an asymptotic analysis of the same problem by Neu. It is found that strained vortex sheets are fundamentally unstable unless their local strength nowhere exceeds a constant (somewhat larger than 2) times the square root of the product of strain and viscosity. The instability manifests itself by the spanwise redistribution of the vorticity towards the regions of maximum strength. This is accompanied by the local rotation of the layer and the intensification of the vorticity. The end result of this evolution is a set of discrete round vortices whose structure is well approximated by that of axially symmetric vortices in an axially symmetric strain. The phenomenon can proceed (possibly simultaneously) on two separate lengthscales and with two correspondingly different timescales. The first lengthscale is the initial spanwise extent of vorticity of a given sign. The second, relevant to initially thin and spanwise slowly varying vortex layers, is proportional to the layer thickness. The two types of vorticity focusing or collapse are studied separately. The effect of the first on the diffusion rate of a scalar across the layer is calculated. The second is examined in detail for a spanwise-uniform layer: First we solve the eigenvalue problem for infinitesimal perturbations and then use the eigenfunctions as initial conditions for a numerical finite-differences solution. We find that the initial instability is similar to that of unstrained layers, in that roll-up and pairings also follow. However, at each stage a strain-diffusion balance eventually imposes the same cross-sectional lengthscale and each of these events leads to an intensification of the local value of the vorticity.

The parameters upon which collapse and its timescale depend are related to those which are known to govern a mixing layer. The results suggest that the conditions for collapse of strained vortex sheets into concentrated round vortices are easily met in a mixing layer, even at low Reynolds numbers, so that these structures whose size is the Taylor microscale are far more plausibly typical than are vortex sheets on that scale. We found that they raise significantly the diffusion rate of scalar attributes by enhancing the rate of growth of material surfaces across which diffusion takes place. Finally, experimental methods that rely on the visualization of the gradient of scalar concentration are shown to be unable to reveal the presence of streamwise vorticity unless that vorticity has already gathered into concentrated vortex tubes.

The flow in the wakes behind two-dimensional perforated plates has been investigated in the Reynolds number range 2·5 × 104 to 9·0 × 104.

Measurements of drag and shedding frequency were made and a pulsed hotwire anemometer was used to measure the mean velocity and turbulent intensity variations in the highly turbulent regions immediately behind the plates.

The results indicate the existence of two distinct types of flows: one appropriate to high and the other to low values of plate porosity.

This work is an experimental investigation of the turbulent concentration field formed when the nozzle gas from a round, momentum-driven, free turbulent jet mixes with gas entrained from a quiescent reservoir. The measurements, which were made with a non-intrusive laser-Rayleigh scattering diagnostic at Reynolds numbers of 5000, 16000, and 40000, cover the axial range from 20 to 90 jet exit diameters and resolve the full range of temporal and spatial concentration scales. Reynolds-number-independent and Reynolds-number-dependent similarities are investigated. The mean and r.m.s. values of the concentration are found to be consistent with jet similarity laws. Concentration fluctuation power spectra are found to be self-similar along rays emanating from the virtual origin of the jet. The probability density function for the concentration is also found to be self-similar along rays. Near the centreline of the jet, the scaled probability density function of jet fluid concentration is found to be nearly independent of the Reynolds number.

An experimental study is presented on contact angle dynamics during spreading/recoiling of mm-sized water droplets impacting orthogonally on various surfaces with $\hbox{\it We}\,{=}\,O(0.1)-O(10)$, $Ca\,{=}\,O(0.001)-O(0.01)$, $\hbox{\it Re}\,{=}\,O(100)-O(1000)$, $Oh\,{=}\,O(0.001)$ and $Bo\,{=}\,O(0.1)$. In this impact regime, inertial, viscous and capillary phenomena act in unison to influence contact angle dynamics. The wetting properties of the target surfaces range from wettable to non-wettable. The experiments feature accelerating and decelerating wetting lines, capillary surface waves in the early impact stages, contact angle hysteresis, and droplet rebound under non-wetting conditions. The objective of the work is to provide insight into the dynamic behaviour of the apparent (macroscopic) contact angle $\theta$ and its dependence on contact line velocity $V_{\hbox{\scriptsize{\it CL}}}$ at various degrees of surface wetting. By correlating the temporal behaviours of $\theta$ and $V_{\hbox{\scriptsize{\it CL}}}$, the angle vs. speed relationship is established for each case examined. The results reveal that surface wettability has a critical influence on dynamic contact angle behaviour. The hydrodynamic wetting theory of Cox (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 357, 1998, p. 249) and the molecular-kinetic theory of wetting by Blake & Haynes (J. Colloid Interface Sci.) vol. 30, 1969, p. 421) are implemented to extract values of the corresponding microscopic wetting parameters required to match the experimentally observed $\theta$vs. $V_{\hbox{\scriptsize{\it CL}}}$ data. Application of hydrodynamic theory indicates that in the slow stage of forced spreading the slip length and the microscopic contact angle should be contact line velocity dependent. The hydrodynamic theory performs well during kinematic (fast) spreading, in which solid/liquid interactions are weak. Application of the molecular kinetic theory yields physically reasonable molecular wetting parameters, which, however, vary with impact conditions. The results indicate that even for a single liquid there is no universal expression to relate contact angle with contact line speed. Finally, analysis of the spreading dynamics on the non-wettable surfaces shows that it conforms to the Cassie-Baxter regime (only partial liquid/solid contact is maintained). The present results offer guidance for numerical or analytical studies, which require careful attention to the implementation of boundary conditions at the moving contact line, including the need to specify the dependence of contact angle on contact line speed.

The flow-induced surface instabilities of Kramer-type compliant surfaces are investigated by a variety of theoretical approaches. This class of instability includes all those modes of instability for which the mechanism of generation involves essentially inviscid processes. The results should be applicable to all compliant surfaces that could be modelled theoretically by a thin elastic plate, with or without applied longitudinal tension, supported on a springy elastic foundation. with or without a viscous fluid substrate; material damping is also taken into account through the viscoelastic properties of the solid constituents of the coatings.

The simple case of a potential main flow is studied first. The eigenmodes for this case are subjected to an energy analysis following the methods of Landahl (1962). Instabilities that grow both in space and time are then considered, and absolute and convective instabilities identified and analysed.

The effects of irreversible processes on the flow-induced surface instabilities are investigated. The shear flow in the boundary layer gives rise to a fluctuating pressure component which is out of phase with the surface motion. This leads to an irreversible transfer of energy from the main stream to the compliant surface. This mechanism is studied in detail and is shown to be responsible for travelling-wave flutter. Simple results are obtained for the critical velocity, wavenumber and stability boundaries. These last are shown to be in good agreement with the results obtained by the numerical integration of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation. An analysis of the effects of a viscous fluid substrate and of material damping is then carried out. The simpler inviscid theory is shown to predict values of the maximum growth rate which are, again, in good agreement with the results obtained by the numerical integration of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation provided that the instability is fairly weak.

Compliant surfaces of finite length are analysed in the limit as wave-length tends to zero. In this way the static-divergence instability is predicted. Simple formulae for critical velocity and wavenumber are derived. These are in exact agreement with the results of the simpler infinite-length theory. But, whereas a substantial level of damping is required for the instability on a surface of infinite length, static divergence grows fastest in the absence of damping on a surface of finite length.

In this paper the spatial variations and spectral structure of steady-state turbulent shear flow in channels are investigated without the introduction of empirical parameters. This is made possible by the assumption that the non-linear momentum transport has only stabilizing effects on the mean field of flow. Two constraints on the possible momentum transport are drawn from this assumption: first, that the mean flow will be statistically stable if an Orr-Sommerfeld type equation is satisfied by fluctuations of the mean; second, that the smallest scale of motion that can be present in the spectrum of the momentum transport is the scale of the marginally stable fluctuations of the mean. Within these two constraints, and for a given mass transport, an upper limit is sought for the rate of dissipation of potential energy into heat. Solutions of the stability equation depend upon the shape of the mean velocity profile. In turn, the mean velocity profile depends upon the spatial spectrum of the momentum transport. A variational technique is used to determine that momentum transport spectrum which is both marginally stable and produces a maximum dissipation rate. The resulting spectrum determines the velocity profile and its dependence on the boundary conditions. Past experimental work has disclosed laminar, ‘transitional’, logarithmic and parabolic regions of the velocity profile. Several experimental laws and their accompanying constants relate the extent of these regions to the boundary conditions. The theoretical profile contains each feature and law that is observed. First approximations to the constants are found, and give, in particular, a value for the logarithmic slope (von Kármán's constant) which is within the experimental error. However, the theoretical boundary constant is smaller than the observed value. Turbulent channel flow seems to achieve the extreme state found here, but a more decisive quantitative comparison of theory and experiment requires improvement in the solutions of the classical laminar stability problem.

Cavitation microstreaming is a well-known phenomenon; however, few flow visualizations or measurements of the velocity fields have been conducted. In this paper micro-PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurements and streak photography were used to study the flow field around a single and two oscillating bubbles resting on a solid boundary. The mode of oscillation of the bubble was also measured in terms of the variation in the radius of the bubble and the movement of the bubble's centroid so that the streaming flow field could be accurately related to the bubble's oscillatory motion. The mode of oscillation was found to vary primarily with the applied acoustic frequency. Several modes of oscillation were investigated, including translating modes where the bubble's centroid moves along either a single axis, an elliptical orbit or a circular orbit. The flow field resulting from these oscillation modes contains closed streamlines representing vortical regions in the vicinity of the bubble. The translating modes were observed to occur in sequential order with the acoustic excitation frequency, changing from a translation along a single axis, to an elliptical orbit and finally to a circular orbit, or vice versa. Following this sequence, there is a corresponding transformation of the streaming pattern from a symmetrical flow structure containing four vortices to a circular vortex centred on the bubble. Despite some inconsistencies, there is general agreement between these streaming patterns and those found in existing theoretical models. Volume and shape mode oscillations of single bubbles as well as several different cases of multiple bubbles simultaneously oscillating with the same frequency and phase were also investigated and show a rich variety of streaming patterns.
