This paper is concerned with the asymptotic theory of estimates of an unknown parameter in continuous-time Markov processes, which are described by non-linear stochastic differential equations. The maximum likelihood estimate and the minimum contrast estimate are investigated. For these estimates strong consistency and asymptotic normality are proved. The unknown parameter is assumed to take its values either in an open or in a compact set of real numbers.

Stochastic comparison results for replacement policies are shown in this paper using the formalism of point processes theory. At each failure moment a repair is allowed. It is performed with a random degree of repair including (as special cases) perfect, minimal and imperfect repair models. Results for such repairable systems with schemes of planned replacements are also shown. The results are obtained by coupling methods for point processes.

The general coalescent process with simultaneous multiple mergers of ancestral lines was initially characterized by Möhle and Sagitov (2001) in terms of a sequence of measures defined on the finite-dimensional simplices. A more compact characterization of the general coalescent requiring a single probability measure Ξ defined on the infinite simplex Δ was suggested by Schweinsberg (2000). This paper presents a simple criterion of weak convergence to the Ξ-coalescent. In contrast to the earlier criterion of Möhle and Sagitov (2001) based on the moment conditions, the key condition here is expressed in terms of the joint distribution of the ranked offspring sizes. This criterion interprets a vector in Δ as the ranked fractions of the total population size assigned to sibling groups constituting a (rare) generation, where a merger might occur. An example of the general coalescent is developed on the basis of the Poisson–Dirichlet distribution. It suggests a simple algorithm of simulating the Kingman coalescent with occasional (simultaneous) multiple mergers.

Let η =Σjδτj be a point process on some space S and let β,β1,β2, … be identically distributed non-negative random variables which are mutually independent and independent of η. We can then form the compound point process ξ = Σjβjδτj which is a random measure on S. The purpose of this paper is to study the limiting behaviour of ξ as . In the particular case when β takes the values 1 and 0 with probabilities p and 1 –p respectively, ξ becomes a p-thinning of η and our theorems contain some classical results by Rényi and others on the thinnings of a fixed process, as well as a characterization by Mecke of the class of subordinated Poisson processes.

In this note we point out an inherent difficulty in numerical identification of bacteria. The problem is that of uniqueness of the taxonomic structure or, in mathematical terms, the lack of statistical identifiability of finite mixtures of multivariate Bernoulli probability distributions shown here.

Let P be the transition matrix of a positive recurrent Markov chain on the integers, with invariant distribution π. If (n)P denotes the n x n ‘northwest truncation’ of P, it is known that approximations to π(j)/π(0) can be constructed from (n)P, but these are known to converge to the probability distribution itself in special cases only. We show that such convergence always occurs for three further general classes of chains, geometrically ergodic chains, stochastically monotone chains, and those dominated by stochastically monotone chains. We show that all ‘finite’ perturbations of stochastically monotone chains can be considered to be dominated by such chains, and thus the results hold for a much wider class than is first apparent. In the cases of uniformly ergodic chains, and chains dominated by irreducible stochastically monotone chains, we find practical bounds on the accuracy of the approximations.

A well-known maintenance procedure for stochastically failing units is the age replacement policy (ARP). Under the ARP a unit is replaced on failure, or when it reaches a predetermined critical age.

In previous papers concerned with this procedure the authors searched for the optimal critical age to minimize the objective function under discussion. The purpose of this paper is to prove that the ARP itself is the optimal decision rule amongst all reasonable policies.

Imagine a man owning a commodity, e.g., a house, which is for sale. Offers at varying amounts are coming in every now and then. The longer he postpones selling the more he loses because of deterioration, interest losses, or the like. At each offer he must decide whether to accept it or wait for a better one. (A more picturesque example would be that of a girl scrutinizing successive suitors.)

A random graph is a collection of n points and n directed arcs: a directed arc goes equiprobably from each point to one of (n – 1) other points. m points are initially ‘infected'. We consider several schemes of epidemic process, e.g. when the infection is delivered according to arc direction. We prove that the probability of infecting all the n points with m = 1 is ∼ e/n, when n → ∞; another result is that m = o(√ n) cannot infect an essential part of the graph (having the size of O(n)). Possible applications of the models to real world phenomena are briefly discussed.

This paper is a sequel to our previous paper investigating when arrivals see time averages (ASTA) in a stochastic model; i.e., when the steady-state distribution of an embedded sequence, obtained by observing a continuous-time stochastic process just prior to the points (arrivals) of an associated point process, coincides with the steady-state distribution of the observed process. The relation between the two distributions was also characterized when ASTA does not hold. These results were obtained using the conditional intensity of the point process given the present state of the observed process (assumed to be well defined) and basic properties of Riemann–Stieltjes integrals. Here similar results are obtained using the stochastic intensity associated with the martingale theory of point processes, as in Brémaud (1981). In the martingale framework, the ASTA result is almost an immediate consequence of the definition of a stochastic intensity. In a stationary framework, the results characterize the Palm distribution, but stationarity is not assumed here. Watanabe's (1964) martingale characterization of a Poisson process is also applied to establish a general version of anti–PASTA: if the points of the point process are appropriately generated by the observed process and the observed process is Markov with left-continuous sample paths, then ASTA implies that the point process must be Poisson.

Berry-Esseen-type bounds to the normal, based on zero- and size-bias couplings, are derived using Stein's method. The zero biasing bounds are illustrated in an application to combinatorial central limit theorems in which the random permutation has either the uniform distribution or one that is constant over permutations with the same cycle type, with no fixed points. The size biasing bounds are applied to the occurrences of fixed, relatively ordered subsequences (such as rising sequences) in a random permutation, and to the occurrences of patterns, extreme values, and subgraphs in finite graphs.

Self-exciting point processes (SEPPs), or Hawkes processes, have found applications in a wide range of fields, such as epidemiology, seismology, neuroscience, engineering, and more recently financial econometrics and social interactions. In the traditional SEPP models, the baseline intensity is assumed to be a constant. This has restricted the application of SEPPs to situations where there is clearly a self-exciting phenomenon, but a constant baseline intensity is inappropriate. In this paper, to model point processes with varying baseline intensity, we introduce SEPP models with time-varying background intensities (SEPPVB, for short). We show that SEPPVB models are competitive with autoregressive conditional SEPP models (Engle and Russell 1998) for modeling ultra-high frequency data. We also develop asymptotic theory for maximum likelihood estimation based inference of parametric SEPP models, including SEPPVB. We illustrate applications to ultra-high frequency financial data analysis, and we compare performance with the autoregressive conditional duration models.

Place n arcs of equal lengths randomly on the circumference of a circle, and let C denote the proportion covered. The moments of C (moments of coverage) are found by solving a recursive integral equation, and a formula is derived for the cumulative distribution function. The asymptotic distribution of C for large n is explored, and is shown to be related to the exponential distribution.

The purpose of this paper is to give some very simple applications of martingales to epidemics. The results are all connected with stopping times T (for instance the classical end of epidemic) and include the expression of the joint generating function Laplace transform of and and simple relations between moments of these three variables. (Here Xt and Yt respectively denote the numbers of susceptibles and carriers.) We also give several relations between different types of epidemics. Although this paper only deals with Downton's model, some of the methods are still valid for more general models.

In many applications of queueing theory assumptions of either Poisson arrivals or exponential service times are made. The implicit assumption is that if the actual arrival process approximates a Poisson process and the service times are close to exponential, then the quantities of interest in the real queueing system (viz. the virtual waiting time, queue length, idle times, etc.), will approximate those of the idealized model. The continuity of the single server queue acting as functionals of the arrival and service processes is established. The proof involves an application of the theory of weak convergence of probability measures on metric spaces.

It is shown that if a finite-state continuous-time Markov process can be uniformized such that the embedded Markov chain has a TPr (totally positive of order r) transition matrix, then the first-passage time from state 0 to any other state has a PFr (Polya frequency of order r) density. As a consequence, results of Keilson (1971), Esary, Marshall and Proschan (1973), Ghosh and Ebrahimi (1982) and Derman, Ross and Schechner (1983) are strengthened. It is also shown that some cumulative damage shock models, with an underlying compound Poisson process and ‘damages' which are not necessarily non-negative, are associated with wear processes having PFr first-passage times to any threshold. First-passage times with completely monotone densities are also discussed.

In the present paper we study the number of occurrences of non-overlapping success runs of length in a sequence of (not necessarily identical) Bernoulli trials arranged on a circle. An exact formula is given for the probability function, along with some sharp bounds which turn out to be very useful in establishing limiting (Poisson convergence) results. Certain applications to statistical run tests and reliability theory are also discussed.

The notion of minimal repair is generalized to the case when the lifetime distribution function is a continuous or a discrete mixture of distributions (heterogeneous population). The statistical (black box) minimal repair and the minimal repair based on information just before the failure of an object are considered. The corresponding stochastic intensities are defined and analyzed for the point processes generated by both types of minimal repair. Some generalizations are discussed. Several simple examples are considered.
